00:05These are four of more than 3,400 film workers who have pledged to boycott Israeli film institutions.
00:13The group Film Workers for Palestine posted the pledge,
00:17calling on anyone in the industry to answer a direct appeal from Palestinian artists
00:22who urged the international film community to take action.
00:25The pledge was inspired by Filmmakers United Against Apartheid, formed in 1987,
00:34when directors like Spike Lee and Martin Scorsese urged then-president Ronald Reagan
00:39to support a boycott of South Africa.
00:42The 3,400 and counting signees pledged not to screen films,
00:46appear at or otherwise work with Israeli film institutions
00:50that are implicated in genocide and apartheid against the Palestinian people.
00:54The list even includes progressive Jewish celebrities like Alana Glazer and Hannah Einbinder,
01:01both vocal supporters of Palestine.
01:03Film Workers for Palestine stress the pledge does not target Israeli identity,
01:08nor does it prohibit collaboration with individuals.
01:11Instead, it specifically calls out institutions.
01:15Supporters point to a ruling from the International Court of Justice
01:18saying there is a plausible risk of genocide in Gaza.
01:21The pledge, posted September 8th, came just days after pro-Palestinian protests
01:27during the Venice International Film Festival.
01:30Meanwhile, the Gaza Health Ministry, which is run by Hamas,
01:34says the Palestinian death toll has now surpassed 64,000.
01:39A boycott won't shut down Israel's film industry overnight,
01:43but it could impact events like the Jerusalem Film Festival
01:47and reduce access to international premieres.
01:50And since it takes inspiration from the 1987 filmmakers
01:54against the apartheid movement,
01:55which helped isolate South Africa culturally
01:58and added pressure to end apartheid,
02:00supporters hope this new pledge can do the same,
02:03using the power of film to push politics beyond the screen.
