00:00A well-known Al Jazeera journalist's death, along with four of his colleagues in an Israeli airstrike,
00:06is spurring fresh accusations, worldwide protests, and international condemnation.
00:13Israel says it targeted and killed Anas al-Sharif Sunday,
00:17accusing him of leading a Hamas terror cell for more than a decade,
00:21adding he worked under the guise of being a journalist.
00:24Now, Israel Defense Forces says it has evidence he also received a salary
00:29from the terror group, as first reported by the Times of Israel,
00:33and confirmed by an Israeli military spokesperson on social media.
00:37The IDF also says, while serving as head of the Hamas terror cell,
00:41that he advanced rocket attacks on Israeli civilians and troops.
00:45Officials displayed reported documents backing their claims,
00:48including a filing showing al-Sharif on the Hamas payroll,
00:52with a salary of $200 a month back in 2017.
00:55The spokesperson says this is just a small portion of the documents they have on al-Sharif.
01:02Al Jazeera and al-Sharif, before his death, denied the accusations leveled by Israel
01:07and contend the claims lack evidence.
01:10The news outlet calls al-Sharif one of the bravest journalists
01:13and his colleagues among the last remaining voices in Gaza.
01:17Seven people in total were killed in the Israeli airstrike outside a hospital
01:21in Gaza City on Sunday, including a freelance journalist.
01:25From the West Bank to Washington, D.C., protests have ensued
01:28as protesters and mourners demand accountability for the deadly airstrike.
01:33Fellow journalists have also condemned the killings, including CNN's Clarissa Ward.
01:37I just wanted to say, and I realize that it helps nobody,
01:40but I think I speak for a lot of Western journalists
01:43when I say that so many of us feel angry and outraged
01:49and powerless and ashamed.
01:54We are confronted with a stream of accusations from the IDF
02:00that seek to dehumanize our Palestinian colleagues,
02:03that seek to justify their killings.
02:05The United Nations also condemned Israel's actions
02:08and called it a grave breach of international and humanitarian law.
02:13The Committee to Protect Journalists reports
02:14that at least 186 journalists have been killed
02:18since Israel's war against Hamas began.
02:21Israel denies it deliberately targets journalists.
02:24Rather, it argues it targets terrorists disguised as journalists.
