00:00Is a government shutdown imminent?
00:02President Donald Trump and the Senate's top Republican are saying they don't see a path
00:06to a bipartisan deal to fund the government, and there's 18 days left to make it happen.
00:14So President Trump and Senate Majority Leader John Thune came out with slightly different
00:18messages this morning, but they both would lead to the same result, a government shutdown.
00:23President Trump is telling Republicans they don't need to work with Democrats to reach
00:27an agreement.
00:28Don't even bother dealing with them.
00:30We will get it through because the Republicans are sticking together for the first time in
00:35a long time.
00:36Republicans do need at least seven Democrats in the Senate to get over the 60-vote threshold.
00:41Despite that, President Trump wants Republicans to do it alone.
00:45If you gave them every dream right now, every dream that they want to give away money to
00:52this and that and destroy the country, if you gave them every dream, they would not vote
00:56for it.
00:57The Senate Majority Leader John Thune says he believes Democrats want a government shutdown.
01:01I think that they see it as politically advantageous to have a shutdown.
01:05I think that their base is clamoring for that.
01:07They want to fight with the Trump administration, but they don't have a good reason to do it.
01:12Thune said the House and White House are trending toward a continuing resolution to keep the
01:17government funded for seven weeks, which will hopefully allow Congress to approve appropriations
01:21bills that will last for all of fiscal year 2026.
01:25Democrats want to reverse spending cuts that Republicans made in the so-called One Big Beautiful
01:29bill, particularly to Medicaid.
01:32They also want to extend Obamacare tax credits that help low-income families pay their insurance
01:37premiums.
01:38Those are expiring this year.
01:40The bottom line is that the bill they proposed can't get our votes.
01:44It doesn't meet the needs of the American people, plain and simple.
01:48The Senate is the only place Democratic votes are needed to approve a funding bill.
01:52The House only requires a simple majority, and Republicans do have the numbers to pass the
01:57bill in that chamber.
