00:00US citizenship just got a little harder. Applicants will now face a new civics test
00:05with more questions about American history, government, and the founding principles of the
00:10nation. US Citizenship and Immigration Service announced Wednesday that the updated test
00:18provides a similar format from Trump's first term in 2020, which had been removed by the
00:24Biden administration for making it more challenging for immigrants to become citizens.
00:28The new exam includes 128 questions and applicants must get 12 out of 20 right in an oral test.
00:36Previously, they studied 100 questions and needed six correct answers.
00:40The change, officials say, is part of a broader push to ensure new citizens are prepared to fully
00:45participate in American life. Questions now cover the 10th Amendment, the Federalist Papers,
00:51President Eisenhower, Hamilton, and Madison, and American Innovation. The rules apply to
00:56applications filed after mid-October. In the last decade, nearly 8 million immigrants have taken the
01:03oath. In 2024, more than 818,000 new citizens were naturalized, down 7% from 2023, but still above
01:11pre-pandemic levels. During 2020, pandemic shutdowns slowed everything. USCIS received 7.7 million
01:19applications and naturalized just 625,000. Read the full story right now on the Straight Arrow News
