00:00All right, let's get you guys ready for the second Subway series of the season.
00:04Repping the Yankees side of things, we've got Ryan Garcia
00:07of Empire Sports Media and the Fireside Yankees podcast.
00:11Repping the Mets side of things, we've got Tyler Ward,
00:14your favorite Mets content creator.
00:16My man crushes it with the postgame breakdowns
00:20and everything that he does.
00:23Gentlemen, say hello to each other before we get this thing going real quick.
00:27Ryan, how you doing, my man?
00:29Good, good.
00:30All right, I'm going to start this off.
00:32Ryan, I'm going to throw to you first.
00:35The Mets and Yankees, as we know, had two of the three best records in baseball
00:39back on June 13th.
00:41Since then, both these teams have been trashed.
00:44But despite the recent slumps, argue why your squad is still the better team overall.
00:50Ryan, go.
00:51So the reasons I would point to is that I think the Yankees have mostly lost
00:55because of close games and bad situational baseball.
00:59And I think those are things you can adjust with a couple of small tweaks.
01:02I think one of the big ones is moving Jazz Chisholm back to second base.
01:05That immediately improves your infield defense a ton.
01:09And I would also point to the fact that I still think this offense and pitching staff
01:12are as good as advertised.
01:14I don't believe the results in terms of ERA or OPS are going to dip much
01:18throughout the rest of the season.
01:20So I think the Yankees are going through more of a they don't have the right alignment issue,
01:24not necessarily concerns with individual or specific players.
01:28Tyler, the Mets look like they're slowly getting out of their slow June or their slump.
01:34Why are they the better team going into this Subway Series?
01:37I think when you look at this Subway Series matchup versus the previous one,
01:42there was obviously a lot of anticipation and pressure with Juan Soto entering the Bronx
01:46and how he heard it from the fans, certainly.
01:48And since that point, the Mets have played some very inconsistent baseball.
01:51And over the past 18 games in particular, they're just 4-14.
01:55Not too much better than the Yankees, but still really, really bad over that stretch.
02:00But the reason why I have confidence in the Mets being the better team
02:02and this matchup in particular has a lot to do with not only the Mets being at home
02:06in which they have been the best team, not only in baseball potentially,
02:09but especially out of the National League at minimum.
02:11Along with a lot that is finally starting to kickstart some fire
02:14and they woke up big time this past night at the time of us doing this recording
02:17over the young right-hander Wizerowski, who's been otherwise dominant
02:21for the Milwaukee Brewers so far this season.
02:23Yeah, the Mets have been really good at home.
02:25They've got, they've locked Queens down there to defend in the home court.
02:28But you mentioned Juan Soto, the man has been absolutely incredible
02:33in the month of June, NL Player of the Month for the month of June.
02:37So that brings me to the next one.
02:39I'll start with you, Tyler.
02:40Who has to have a better series this time around, Juan Soto or Aaron Judge?
02:46I think for everyone's sake, it needs to be Juan Soto, right?
02:49Aaron Judge and the Yankees, obviously best of the Mets in two games out of three
02:53in the Bronx, you know, not all that long ago.
02:55But fast forward to now present day, Juan Soto, who was just named
02:59the National League Player of the Month after having statistically the best month
03:03in Mets team history with at least nine home runs, at least 20 runs scored,
03:07at least 20-plus walks, currently leads all Major League Baseball in 70-plus walks.
03:11So Juan Soto is looking to have his big moment finally against his former club
03:15there in the Yanks, and hopefully we can see that transpire this weekend.
03:18Ryan, it looks like it's Aaron Judge and then there's the rest of the team.
03:21Who do you think has to perform better this time around, Aaron Judge or Juan Soto?
03:27So I'll agree and say Juan Soto, but not because he needs to prove to the Yankees
03:31that he's good.
03:32He's a great player, but rather because if he can lead the Mets to a series victory
03:37with a great series, I mean, think about what that does to make confidence
03:40and momentum standpoint.
03:42The guy who's been having, as Tyler mentioned, an absolutely remarkable month of June,
03:46brings the Mets to a series victory over the Yankees in Queens
03:50with a phenomenal, phenomenal series.
03:52You couldn't write a better story and you couldn't write a better narrative than that.
03:55I couldn't imagine Mets fans waking up even remotely bitter on Monday morning
03:58if that was the case.
03:59There's a lot riding on this series.
04:02Again, both of these teams are either one's in a slump,
04:05one's slowly coming out of a slump.
04:07Both are going to be, I guess, buyers at the trade deadline.
04:11So, Ryan, I'll start with you.
04:12Whose squad has more pressure on them to be active before or at the trade deadline?
04:18So, I'll make the argument for the Yankees.
04:21While the Mets are closer to being out of a playoff spot than the Yankees
04:24because the National League is more competitive,
04:26I think the Yankees have to look at this from the standpoint of Aaron Judge is 33,
04:30Juan Soto is 26.
04:32Juan Soto not winning a World Series in his first year with the Mets
04:35doesn't close his window.
04:37Aaron Judge's window to win a World Series may not be that much wider.
04:41So, I think the Yankees have more pressure to make additions
04:44and to get the job done this year
04:46because, again, you don't know how many years of this level of Aaron Judge performance
04:50you're going to get moving forward.
04:52Tyler, your thoughts?
04:54Yeah, I think especially when you look at everything that's went oh so wrong
04:57for the Mets the past three-plus weeks of baseball.
04:59They went from having the best overall pitching staff in the game
05:02based on Team ERA throughout the first two months of the year.
05:05Since then, they've lost their ace in Kodai Senga.
05:08Over the past couple weeks, they've lost Tyler McGill,
05:10Griffin canning out the entire season with a very unfortunate Achilles rupture
05:14that we saw.
05:15All the more reason for David Stearns,
05:17who didn't really do anything overwhelming at last year's trade-in line
05:20that some fans attribute to the Mets maybe not getting farther
05:23than where they did there in the NLCS.
05:25That's an area that I would certainly like them to obviously add big time.
05:29And there's a lot of pressure now on Stearns and the Mets
05:31to actually go out and make some moves of significance
05:34with their continued woes with runners in scoring position.
05:37We're over halfway through the season, and they are second-to-last in the game
05:40currently in that regard, only trailing the Chicago White Sox
05:44and team buying average in said statistic.
05:46Again, all the more reason that the Mets need to find some remedy there,
05:49whether it's adding some oomph to their offense from the outfield to the infield,
05:52and of course, shoring up that pitching staff.
05:54All right, let's take it back to this series.
05:56Tyler, who needs to win this series more?
05:58Who's facing the pressure, the Mets or the Yankees?
06:01Again, without trying to be biased here, I think just based on how poor
06:05the Mets' past three weeks have been, there is more pressure on the Mets
06:08to get this done, not just because of the previous Subway Series this season,
06:11but more so when you're 4-14 over your past 18 games.
06:14Again, it really doesn't get much worse than that,
06:16especially for a big market club having not just playoff aspirations,
06:19but World Series aspirations.
06:21The Mets find themselves in that category.
06:22And I understand the Yankees have not played at all their best baseball
06:25over this past calendar month as well.
06:27It's actually kind of insane how similar the two have performed or lacked their own
06:31over this past three-plus-week stretch.
06:33But bearing in mind, as Ryan mentioned earlier,
06:35what the status is of the American League,
06:37which I think we can all agree isn't as deep as the National League,
06:40and looking at the Phillies and many other teams,
06:42they're currently chomping at the bit to have deep runs this year.
06:45Again, that's why I feel the way that I do in regards to the Mets.
06:48Ryan, it's a great chance for the Mets to kick big bro while they're down right now.
06:53So who needs to win this series, Mets or Yankees?
06:57So I'll argue for the Yankees here.
06:59And the reason I'm saying that is because the Yankees went from kind of being in first place
07:03from start to finish or through this point in the season
07:05to now battling Toronto Blue Jays.
07:07And coming off of what is an absolutely terrible series in Toronto,
07:11they need something, something to get them going,
07:15something to give them maybe a little bit of breathing room,
07:17maybe the Rays drop a couple of games,
07:19or the Blue Jays drop a couple of games over the weekend,
07:22and take the pressure off of feeling like you're about to blow a division
07:25that you were running away with just a month ago.
07:28I don't know what it is.
07:29I think I'm more excited about this series than I was the first one for some reason.
07:33I don't know what it is.
07:35But this was fun, fellas.
07:36Appreciate you guys hopping on.
07:37Have a great July 4th weekend.
07:40You too.
07:40Brandon, Ryan, always a pleasure.
07:42Thank you, guys.
