00:00One of Africa's smallest countries might be keeping its long-time leader for another term, or even for life.
00:10The parliament of Djibouti voted unanimously to remove the age limit for the country's president on Sunday.
00:18The constitution previously fixed the limit at 75 years of age.
00:24The vote needs to be approved by the president himself before being confirmed in a second vote on 2nd November.
00:32If confirmed, it means that the way is paved for current president Ismail Omar Ghali, also known as IOG, to stay in power.
00:42Aged 77, the constitutional limit prevented him from running in the next presidential elections in April 2026.
00:51Ghali has been president since 1999 and has since concentrated almost all power in his hands.
00:58In the last election in 2021, he was re-elected with a landslide victory of 97% of votes.
01:07Djibouti is considered an authoritarian country. Freedom of expression is severely restricted.
