Senegal to hold national referendum after controversial constitutional change

Senegal's National Assembly passed a bill revising the balance of power between the country's executive and parliament on Monday, prompting the president to announce a national referendum on the matter.

00:03After the National Assembly adopted a controversial bill that would reverse the power balance between Parliament and the Executive on

00:11the country will now hold a national referendum on the matter.
00:16In a letter dated June 12, the President of the National Assembly referred this proposal to the President of the
00:25Republic for his opinion.
00:28In turn, in a letter dated June 19, the latter sent his comments to the President of the National Assembly,
00:37indicating his four amendments.
00:40But first, he made a point of informing the President of the National Assembly that he had decided, pursuant to
00:49Article 103 of the Constitution, to submit the adopted text to a referendum.
00:56The bill in question strengthens the powers of the Assembly while restraining those of the President of the country.
