Republic of Congo presidential election set for March 15

According to the Constitution, the presidential election must be held at least 30 days and no more than 40 days before the end of the current presidential term.

00:00The Republic of Congo has set the presidential election for March 15.
00:06This was announced by the government's spokesperson, Thierry Mongala, on Wednesday.
00:10According to the constitution, the presidential election must be held at least 30 days
00:15and no more than 40 days before the end of the current presidential term.
00:20The incoming president, Sasungesu, was sworn in for this term on April 16, 2021.
00:26The deadline for submitting candidacy has not yet been set by the Electoral Commission.
00:32In the meantime, the Congolese Labour Party, PCT, has already nominated Denis Sasungesu as his candidate.
00:40Other possible candidates include former rebel leader, Frederic Binsamu,
00:44Elias Passantumi and Dave Mafula, who was the youngest candidate in the last presidential election.
00:51President Sasungesu took power in 1979.
00:54He was defeated in the first multi-party elections in 1992 by Pascal Lesuba.
00:59Gesso became the president again in 1997 after a civil war.
