00:00At least four people have been killed and dozens more injured after Russian missile and drone strikes hit Ukraine Friday night in the Saturday morning, say Ukrainian officials.
00:14Two people were killed and nine wounded by a ballistic missile attack in the early hours of Saturday in Kiev, while two others were killed and seven wounded in the Dnepropetrovsk region.
00:26Ukraine's Air Force said Russia launched a total of nine missiles and 62 drones.
00:33The attacks came after Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky urged the United States on Friday to expand sanctions on Russian oil and appealed for long-range missiles to hit back at Russia.
00:48Moscow's Defense Ministry said its air defenses shot down 121 Ukrainian drones overnight.
00:56European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the European Union is working on a strategy to end its reliance on China for its critical raw materials.
01:12The strategy comes in a response to China's decision to implement tighter restriction on rare earth exports.
01:19If you consider that over 90% 9-0 of our consumption of rare earth magnets come from imports from China, you see the risks here for Europe and its most strategic industrial sectors.
01:36Von der Leyen said the aim of the plan is to secure access to alternative sources of minerals.
01:42These are key to EU industries such as automotive, defense, green tech and digital sectors.
01:49The plan which is named Resource EU will seek out cooperation with countries like Ukraine, Australia, Canada, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Chile and Greenland.
02:00In an outline of China's blueprint for the next five years, Chinese officials have vowed to reduce reliance on foreign advanced technology and boost domestic production amid heightened trade tensions with the US.
02:16The news came after officials in the ruling Chinese Communist Party concluded four days of high-level talks in Beijing and released plans for the next five years.
02:26The 5000 word communique was released on Thursday just days ahead of planned talks between Chinese President Xi Jinping and his US counterpart Donald Trump.
02:35The new plans feature no major policy shifts for Beijing, despite ongoing global trade instabilities.
02:42The country instead looks to remain a global manufacturing powerhouse and continue to sustain economic growth.
02:48Five-year plans are a Soviet-style central planning method, which China still relies on heavily, to map out priorities and sort funding.
02:56These plenum meetings are also used as a way to rally the party's top members around President Xi's leadership.
03:05The United States has confirmed it is sending its most powerful aircraft carrier to the waters of Venezuela in what is seen as the latest military escalation in the region.
03:18The USS Gerald R. Ford, capable of carrying up to 90 aircraft, will be deployed to, quote,
03:25detect, monitor and disrupt illicit actors and activities that pose a threat to the US, says the Pentagon.
03:33Hours before the announcement, the US said it had conducted its 10th strike on a suspected drug-running boat, leaving six people dead.
03:42The USS Gerald R. Ford, capable of carrying up to the U.S., says the U.S., says the U.S. military buildup is aimed at removing him from power.
03:54Trump has accused Maduro of being the leader of a drug-trafficking organization, and the U.S. does not currently recognize him as Venezuela's legitimate leader.
04:03Two huge cooling towers of the former nuclear power plant in Gündremingen in Germany's Bavaria were destroyed in a controlled demolition at noon on Saturday.
04:20The plant had served as an important landmark in the town for nearly six decades, bringing numerous new jobs and boosting the town's economy.
04:33However, the removal of the cooling towers comes as part of the country's nuclear phase-out.
04:39Both nuclear reactors had already been closed for several years.
04:43Following Saturday's demolition, the dismantling of the plant will further continue, with completion expected by 2040.
