00:00Vladimir Putin has reiterated that he has no plans of slowing down its full-scale invasion or even negotiating with Kiev.
00:11French President Emmanuel Macron announced that France will launch a voluntary military service program in summer 2026.
00:20Pope Leo XIV calls on Turkey to actively play a role for stability and peace in global and regional conflicts as he began his first foreign papal trip on Thursday.
00:30The Russian President has reiterated his maximalist demands over occupied areas of Ukraine.
00:37In Kyrgyzstan, Vladimir Putin insisted Moscow has no plan of slowing down its full-scale invasion or even negotiating with Kiev.
00:45We are still working towards the end of the war, and there, and there.
00:54Ukraine, together with the U.S. and the European Union, has called for Moscow to first agree to a ceasefire and then engage in direct negotiations with Kiev.
01:15But in his remarks on Thursday, Putin rejected this possibility.
01:20Instead, Vladimir Putin said Moscow wants the United States to recognize Russia's occupied territories of Ukraine.
01:31French authorities have detained three people for allegedly working for Russian security services while pretending to run a humanitarian organization.
01:41The trio are also accused of economic espionage.
01:43The suspects are linked to the SOS Donbass Association, which present itself as a humanitarian aid organization.
01:52Its website provides ready-to-print posters with the slogan, Russia is not my enemy.
01:57Two of the people arrested are leaders of the association.
02:00The charges they face are punishable by up to 10 years in prison and hefty fines.
02:05The third person is suspected of having put up posters in September on the Arc de Triomphe with the words,
02:12say thank you to the victorious Soviet soldier.
02:14He is said to have reported to the SOS Donbass Association.
02:18A fourth suspect has been placed under judicial supervision and must regularly report to the police.
02:24France will launch a voluntary military service program in summer 2026, President Emmanuel Macron announced on Thursday.
02:37The scheme will recruit 18 and 19-year-olds selected during a day of mobilization based on their motivation and the needs of the armed forces.
02:47Volunteers will serve for 10 months, beginning with one month of initial training in basic military skills and weapons handling,
02:54followed by nine months in a military unit deployed only on French territory.
02:58We cannot return to the time of the conscription, but we need a mobilization.
03:09Mobilization of the nation to defend ourselves, not against such or such enemy, but to be prepared and respected.
03:19Macron said the program aims to enroll 3,000 young people in 2026, rising to 10,000 by 2030 and 50,000 by 2035.
03:31France's military currently comprises around 200,000 active personnel and over 40,000 reservists,
03:39making it the second largest in the European Union, just behind Poland.
03:43Across French campuses, President Emmanuel Macron's plan for a new voluntary military service for young people
03:53is sparking mixed reactions among students.
03:57Some view the program as an opportunity or even a necessary step in a tense geopolitical climate.
04:24Some told us the timing feels wrong, especially with France aiming to cut public spending.
04:41The headquarters of one of the country's largest student unions, the reaction to Macron's plan is firmly critical.
05:23A génération raised in relative peace now finds itself debating mobilisation, patriotism and the prospect of a future conflict.
05:35Pope Leo XIV encouraged Turkey to be a source of stability in a world riven by conflict
05:39as he began his first foray in papal trip on Thursday.
05:43Arriving in Ankara, the American pontiff was welcomed by a military guard of honor and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
05:49Speaking at the Presidential Palace, Leo XIV praised Turkey's historic role as a bridge between East and West
05:55and a crossroads of cultures.
05:57Today, more than ever, we need people who will promote dialogue and practice it with firm will and patient resolve.
06:06We are now experiencing a phase marked by heightened level of conflict on the global level,
06:12fueled by prevailing strategies of economic and military power.
06:16The Pope's trip also marked the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea, Christianity's first ecumenical council.
06:31On Friday, he will join the Greek Orthodox Patriarch in Iznik to commemorate the event.
06:37Leo is the fifth Pope to visit Turkey following Paul VI, John Paul II, Benedict XVI and Francis.
06:44Countries failed to set a phase-out of fossil fuels at the COP30, and Europe is partly to blame,
06:54European lawmakers noted during a plenary debate in Strasbourg on the results of the 30th United Nations Climate Conference
07:01held last week in Belem, Brazil.
07:03The final text avoids any road map to phase-out coal, gas and oil extraction
07:08due to major resistance from oil-producing countries.
07:11We needed a good deal, 10 years after the Paris Agreement, and what did we get instead?
07:17I am sorry, Commissioner, but I think the support for the fossil fuel roadmap was too weak,
07:23and we were disorganized in the European Union at the table of the COP.
07:28Or why else would EU countries sign different proposals at different times?
07:33Some MEPs also criticized the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen,
07:38for saying at the G20 in South Africa that the EU was not fighting fossil fuels, only emissions.
07:45Transitioning away from fossil fuels.
07:47Europe in Belem was standing behind it, but Europe in South Africa was questioning
07:53that maybe we should talk about the emissions of fossil fuels and not fossil fuels themselves.
07:57I really think the coordination within the Commission is not good enough.
08:02What the COP30 participants did agree on was to triple adaptation finance by 2035
08:08in order that developed countries assist developing countries adapting to the impact of climate change.
08:13The European reform of air passenger rights seems to be going from bad to worse.
08:24Dissatisfaction with the draft text has now reached such a level that the industry has called for a pause in the negotiations.
08:31We urgently call for a six-month pause to the deliberations
08:35until a thorough impact assessment of the proposed measures has been conducted,
08:39it says in a letter sent on behalf of the airline industry operating in Europe.
08:44The current draft text could increase the sector's total annual cost by at least 40%
08:49according to various airlines' associations.
08:53Currently, European air travellers are entitled to compensation
08:56if a flight is cancelled or delayed by more than three hours.
09:00However, airlines are pushing for the threshold to be raised,
09:05which the European Consumer Association rejects.
09:07The first discussions on the Conseil were held on a range of 5 hours and 9 hours,
09:11which would have removed 90% of the rights of passengers.
09:14So for us, it was unacceptable.
09:16The final deal was to be found at 4 and 6 hours,
09:18which would impact more than 60% of passengers.
09:21That is, that 6 people over 10 would have no right to compensation.
09:25For us, it is unacceptable, of course.
09:26Inter-institutional negotiations between the Council, the Parliament,
09:31and the Commission will resume on Monday.
09:37A controversial new budget draft was withdrawn on Thursday morning
09:41after thousands of protesters took to the streets of Sofia
09:44to oppose it the night before.
09:47The government had proposed to increase social security contributions
09:50and double dividend taxes in an ambitious new budget,
09:53which would have set a new spending record at around 46% of GDP,
09:59as well as dramatically increased public debt.
10:02Wednesday evening's rally was organized by the opposition coalition
10:05and is estimated to have drawn around 20,000 people.
10:10Protesters gathered outside the National Assembly building,
10:13where lawmakers convened to examine the proposed budget.
10:16They formed a massive human chain around the Parliament building
10:19in an effort to block all exit and prevent MPs from leaving the premises.
10:25Police say the protests, which were declared as peaceful,
10:28quickly escalated and turned violent,
10:30announcing that three police officers were injured.
10:34Authorities say some protesters threw firecrackers and glass bottles
10:37at deployed officers and attempted to overturn a police van.
10:41The protests came ahead of a final parliamentary vote to gain approval
10:46and just a few weeks before the Balkan nation is set to enter the Eurozone.
10:53Eight skiers were rescued alive this morning
10:56after being buried by an avalanche at the Stubai Glacier in the Austrian Alps.
11:01The group, skiing off-piste, triggered the slide in the Downshard Pass,
11:06a hazardous area outside the protected runs.
11:09A massive rescue operation involving over 250 helpers,
11:13including avalanche dogs and helicopters, was launched immediately.
11:17By afternoon, all skiers identified as from Germany, Bulgaria and Austria
11:22had only minor injuries.
11:24Three of the survivors were airlifted to a hospital,
11:27while others were treated at the scene.
11:29Officials say the avalanche was caused by skiers crossing a slope
11:33with significant snow buildup, though some deployed airbags for safety.
11:39A half-fax-trail can be destroyed on the bed,
11:41as well as you see in the near-sahead airbags.
11:42During the quarantine, it is very much easier
11:43to take the fuel for a meeting.
11:44But the conditions of the Nice and the
11:44In-sahead Airbags was caused by skiers in the bed.
11:44This is an interesting situation for us to become a bit
11:45more likely to be an abandoned shelter.
11:47A life-spersion vehicle with aEST that has been developed
11:49for driving at the side of the ocean.
11:50Then we can recognize that the balance were killed
11:52by skiersong and a preoccupied in the distance.
11:53The next number in the bunker was decided
11:54that the unpleasant stones were headed to a place
11:56elsewhere were basically to be the most uncomfortable
11:58that we can't hold onto the floor.
12:00Of course it has been a hard-coferred in the dust-covering system,
