00:00:59What is going on, everybody?
00:01:11Welcome in.
00:01:11This is the Friday edition of Wake Up Bar Soul.
00:01:15Normally, we've got Dana Beers here.
00:01:17Dana is out on assignment.
00:01:20And we have, well, we've replaced them.
00:01:23Not one, but two.
00:01:24Pretty legendary replacements, I would say.
00:01:26It's me, Mikey Kadic.
00:01:28We've got Chief.
00:01:29We've got Megan Making Money.
00:01:30And, of course, we've got Zach Martin.
00:01:31Dude, Zach, what's up, brother?
00:01:32Thank you so much for being here.
00:01:33No, man.
00:01:34Thanks for having me.
00:01:34Excited to be here.
00:01:35Kind of gone through the gauntlet here.
00:01:37Yeah.
00:01:37The last day or so, but it's great to be here.
00:01:39And you crushed the gauntlet from what I saw, right?
00:01:42I mean, just naturally good at everything.
00:01:43The trivia got me a little bit there.
00:01:45You know, the heart started pumping a little bit.
00:01:47Yeah.
00:01:47You need oxygen.
00:01:49Yeah.
00:01:49Yeah.
00:01:50It's like when your coach used to make you, you know,
00:01:52they try to physically exhaust you and then do you something mental.
00:01:55Whatever.
00:01:56Like mat drills.
00:01:57All right.
00:01:57Boys, are we ready?
00:01:59Oh, no.
00:01:59We're waiting for Cade.
00:02:00Oh, we're waiting for Cade.
00:02:01Okay.
00:02:02Okay.
00:02:02My bad.
00:02:02He's going to do one with us.
00:02:03He's going to do one with us.
00:02:03A little premature smelling salts.
00:02:05Oh, dude.
00:02:06It's exciting.
00:02:06For me.
00:02:07I apologize.
00:02:08It's a tease.
00:02:08We will do smelling salts when we have Cade McConnell on.
00:02:11Vandy, offensive lineman.
00:02:12Zach, so what's up, man?
00:02:14Before we, like, dive into last night's game and everything,
00:02:17I don't want to talk about that.
00:02:20How is retired life?
00:02:22How's it been going?
00:02:23Yeah, it's been great, man.
00:02:25You know, obviously a little different look in fall for me.
00:02:27But, you know, moved back up to my hometown,
00:02:31get the kids settled and, you know,
00:02:33get to enjoy football from the couch this year.
00:02:36So it's been nice.
00:02:36How many kids do you have?
00:02:38We have a fourth on the way.
00:02:40So, yeah, we got a packed house.
00:02:42At the Martin household, yeah.
00:02:44I got three little ones myself,
00:02:46but then I decided to get snipped up, dog.
00:02:48Yeah, I'm not far behind you.
00:02:50I'm not far behind you.
00:02:51I'm going to go to four.
00:02:52I'm not far behind you.
00:02:53Wait until you smell the burning flesh
00:02:55of your own testicles.
00:02:57It's a feeling that you'll never quite forget.
00:02:59I mean, you can appreciate that, right, Megan?
00:03:01My husband has not been fixed.
00:03:03I think, hey, never mind it.
00:03:04I don't know, but I have smelled burning flesh, too.
00:03:07He's actually a survivor.
00:03:09Hell yeah, right on.
00:03:10Okay, guys, so how's that been?
00:03:15So you're talking about watching ball here.
00:03:18Everyone's sick now.
00:03:19I had to set the tone.
00:03:20My bad, dude.
00:03:21I had to set the tone immediately,
00:03:23let Zach know what he was stepping into here.
00:03:27But, okay, so, but like you said,
00:03:28a lot of watching ball.
00:03:29Yep.
00:03:30When's the last time?
00:03:31How old are you right now, 34?
00:03:33I'll be 35 next month.
00:03:34Okay, so when would be the last time
00:03:37do you think that you were just watching ball
00:03:39in your entire life?
00:03:40And I'm talking, like, not even playing Little League.
00:03:43Like, what age did you start?
00:03:44I would say I probably started playing
00:03:46before I really started watching it.
00:03:48Yeah.
00:03:48Hardcore.
00:03:49My dad was a, played college football,
00:03:51so I have two brothers,
00:03:53kind of a football family.
00:03:55Started, we started in third grade
00:03:57playing tackle football,
00:03:58so like seven or eight years old.
00:04:00Damn.
00:04:01O-lineman, D-lineman from the start.
00:04:02Yeah.
00:04:03I was telling myself,
00:04:04my son's playing flag,
00:04:05and he's, you know,
00:04:06he's playing running back receiver,
00:04:07and he's asking me questions.
00:04:08I'm like, buddy,
00:04:08you've touched the ball more than I have.
00:04:10I don't know.
00:04:13Yeah, I remember having, like,
00:04:14dreams of, you know,
00:04:16before, like, first ever padded football practice
00:04:18of, like,
00:04:19because my old man was a quarterback,
00:04:20and I was having dreams of, like,
00:04:21scoring touchdowns,
00:04:23throwing touchdowns,
00:04:24and, yeah,
00:04:24my ass was on the line immediately.
00:04:26Yeah.
00:04:26I was a running back,
00:04:27scored nine touchdowns.
00:04:29What?
00:04:29Oh.
00:04:29Oh, wow.
00:04:31Then I went tight end.
00:04:32I didn't play O-line
00:04:32until I was in middle school.
00:04:34You probably were just out there
00:04:35playing fully ball.
00:04:36You were making the running backs
00:04:36to tight end.
00:04:37Yes.
00:04:38To D-line.
00:04:38He just kept getting fatter and fatter.
00:04:41Yeah, well, we had,
00:04:42our leagues,
00:04:43we had the stripes on our helmets
00:04:44for the weight.
00:04:44Yeah, stripers.
00:04:45Yeah, stripers.
00:04:46So, and then, you know,
00:04:47the real demoralizing part
00:04:50where if you're a certain weight,
00:04:51you got the three stripes.
00:04:52So you had one over to the side
00:04:54and then all the way around,
00:04:55and you could only play O-line.
00:04:56Don't even think about touching the ball.
00:04:57You couldn't even play defense.
00:04:58You could only play O-line.
00:04:59It's like a Scarlet Letter situation.
00:05:02If you were a certain weight,
00:05:03you couldn't run the ball?
00:05:04Oh, yeah.
00:05:04They were like wrestlers.
00:05:05Kids would try to lose weight,
00:05:06cut weight to be the,
00:05:08so they could touch the ball.
00:05:09That's a lot of shit.
00:05:10You'd have to be 160 to touch the ball.
00:05:12Like in eighth grade,
00:05:12our best player was a running back,
00:05:14but, you know,
00:05:14he'd already gone through puberty
00:05:15and everything,
00:05:16so he didn't make the weight.
00:05:16So, you know,
00:05:17you got this guy who clearly
00:05:18is going to be the high school
00:05:19running back playing like left guard
00:05:21for the middle school team.
00:05:22Dude, that's crazy
00:05:23because we actually,
00:05:24I actually drove like kind of like
00:05:25out of the way,
00:05:26like half an hour
00:05:27to get in a non-weight related league
00:05:29and our guard was Cameron Hayward
00:05:32and at 10 years old,
00:05:34he was 6 foot 180.
00:05:37At 10 years old,
00:05:38just absolutely mauling kids.
00:05:40I wasn't that big
00:05:41until I was 19.
00:05:42Yeah, it was crazy.
00:05:44All right, all right.
00:05:45So, wait, real quick
00:05:46before we do get into the game,
00:05:47Mikey,
00:05:49I mean,
00:05:49you were kind of nerding out
00:05:50about Zach yesterday.
00:05:51How are you feeling?
00:05:52When Big Cat told me
00:05:52he was coming in,
00:05:53I like physically jumped
00:05:55out of my seat.
00:05:56It's like, I mean,
00:05:57everyone,
00:05:57like there's a lot of people
00:05:58that come through this office
00:05:59and like we had Joe Thomas
00:06:01last week.
00:06:01It's so cool
00:06:02and I've asked you
00:06:03a million questions,
00:06:05but it was just like so cool
00:06:06to just have like
00:06:07one of your boys.
00:06:08Yeah.
00:06:08Like O-Lyman,
00:06:09the brotherhood is just like,
00:06:11everyone's the same.
00:06:13How many holding penalties
00:06:14did you tell me Zach had
00:06:15in his entire career earlier?
00:06:16Seven.
00:06:17So that means you had
00:06:18as many all pros
00:06:20as holding penalties?
00:06:21That's accepted holding penalties.
00:06:23Oh my God, dude.
00:06:24That's insane.
00:06:26I can't even wrap
00:06:27my brain around that.
00:06:28That's going to be like
00:06:29the craziest sports statistic
00:06:31of all time, arguably.
00:06:33All right.
00:06:33Let's get into last night's game.
00:06:35Not the most exciting
00:06:36Thursday night game.
00:06:37We've had some good ones,
00:06:38but Chargers absolutely
00:06:39dominate the Vikings.
00:06:41But since we have
00:06:43so many O-Lyman here,
00:06:45to me,
00:06:46the story of last night,
00:06:47because like Justin Herbert
00:06:48did great,
00:06:49the running back,
00:06:49another 100-yard game,
00:06:50but it was the return
00:06:51of Joe Ault.
00:06:53The Chargers line
00:06:54has been a disaster
00:06:55thus far this season,
00:06:57and when Joe Ault
00:06:59has played,
00:07:01finished and started games,
00:07:02they're 4-0.
00:07:03I've got some numbers
00:07:04we get into
00:07:04about how much better
00:07:05Herbert's been.
00:07:06But Zach,
00:07:07what about like,
00:07:08because it's one player
00:07:09returning,
00:07:10but when it's a left tackle,
00:07:12and suddenly you don't have
00:07:13to commit resources there,
00:07:14like there's a knock-on effect,
00:07:15right?
00:07:16Oh yeah,
00:07:16and with Slater being out,
00:07:18you kick all over,
00:07:19so you're really on,
00:07:20when all goes out,
00:07:21you're really on your
00:07:21third, fourth tackle,
00:07:22or you're moving guys around,
00:07:23shuffling guys on the line,
00:07:24which I'm not a huge fan of.
00:07:26It's kind of last resort
00:07:27type thing,
00:07:28because you're making
00:07:28multiple positions worse.
00:07:30But really,
00:07:31when you add a guy
00:07:32like Joe Ault back there,
00:07:32you saw Herbert,
00:07:33super comfortable back there.
00:07:35They get Khalil Mack
00:07:36back last night,
00:07:37he's getting pressure
00:07:37on the quarterback.
00:07:38So you know,
00:07:39we talk about the line
00:07:39of scrimmage all the time,
00:07:40their best offensive lineman
00:07:42this year,
00:07:42and their best defensive lineman
00:07:43come back last night,
00:07:45and they get a huge win.
00:07:46Just absolutely
00:07:47dominate the Vikings,
00:07:48get off the mat
00:07:48after last week,
00:07:49Vikings in a bit of trouble.
00:07:52Mikey,
00:07:52what did you think
00:07:53on last night's game?
00:07:53What stood out to you?
00:07:54Yeah,
00:07:54I was talking to Zach,
00:07:56like watching Joe Ault,
00:07:58the way,
00:07:58and he had a little scary.
00:08:00We,
00:08:00because I'm big on injuries,
00:08:02I see injuries really well.
00:08:04Oh really?
00:08:05And also,
00:08:06Dr. K.
00:08:07He's been talking about it
00:08:08since yesterday morning
00:08:09and he did not disappoint last night.
00:08:11Dr. K.
00:08:11Yeah,
00:08:12I don't know what it is,
00:08:13but they were running,
00:08:15the defense was running a twist
00:08:16and Joe kind of got tripped up
00:08:18and someone fell on his ankle
00:08:20and he twisted up
00:08:20and he was fine,
00:08:21but other than that,
00:08:22like the way he's in his stance,
00:08:24he's so wide,
00:08:25and like Zach was saying,
00:08:27it's so hard to get around him
00:08:28because he's just such a wide guy
00:08:29and he latches up
00:08:30and he's just an incredible player
00:08:33and he's enormous.
00:08:34He's huge.
00:08:35He towers over everyone in the huddle.
00:08:37He's every bit of 6'8".
00:08:38He's every bit of 6'8".
00:08:39When you see him in person,
00:08:41I mean,
00:08:41he's just a big dude.
00:08:42And this Vidal guy.
00:08:43Bro,
00:08:44Vidal's a loser.
00:08:45He's a tiny little battering ram.
00:08:47And he was stepping in,
00:08:50hitting these blitzing linebackers,
00:08:52getting under their chin.
00:08:53He's not afraid of anything
00:08:54and he can run the dang ball.
00:08:56I like the little back though
00:08:57because,
00:08:57you know,
00:08:57Harbaugh,
00:08:58they run a lot of gap scheme,
00:08:59you know,
00:09:00and he finds a little crease
00:09:01and hits it.
00:09:01It's almost like the defense
00:09:02can't find him.
00:09:03You know,
00:09:03you get all these double teams
00:09:04washing the defense
00:09:05and he just squirts through it.
00:09:06And then they can't get
00:09:07underneath him
00:09:07to try to get a clean hit on him,
00:09:09dude.
00:09:09He's under everybody.
00:09:10Chief,
00:09:11Carson Wentz last night.
00:09:13It was a,
00:09:15sometimes it's like,
00:09:16It's the end.
00:09:17Sometimes it's painful to,
00:09:18there was that Georgia game,
00:09:20or no,
00:09:20the San Francisco game
00:09:22a couple weeks ago
00:09:23where Mac Jones
00:09:24was clearly dying
00:09:25on the sideline.
00:09:27Carson went through it
00:09:28last night.
00:09:28Yeah,
00:09:28and you see J.J. McCarthy
00:09:30looking very healthy
00:09:32on the sideline.
00:09:34We tried to tell you this.
00:09:35He's got an ankle problem.
00:09:36He's hiding it well
00:09:37because he looked great
00:09:37on the sideline.
00:09:38I think it's time
00:09:38to bring him back.
00:09:39I think that was the key.
00:09:41That fourth quarter,
00:09:42this is J.J.
00:09:43Yeah,
00:09:43really.
00:09:44Nimble.
00:09:45Nimble.
00:09:46So,
00:09:46I don't know what his
00:09:47return time is,
00:09:48but I think if the Vikings
00:09:49are going to save their season,
00:09:50it's got to be J.J.
00:09:52Next week.
00:09:52It's got to be next week.
00:09:53Well,
00:09:53okay,
00:09:54I'll ask you about this,
00:09:55Zach,
00:09:55though.
00:09:55So,
00:09:55this is a weird dynamic,
00:09:56right?
00:09:57Because you could say
00:09:57it's got to be J.J.,
00:09:58but he was awful
00:10:00for seven of eight quarters
00:10:01that we saw him,
00:10:01but it's like,
00:10:02That one quarter,
00:10:03though.
00:10:03The one quarter was good.
00:10:05Versus the Bears.
00:10:06Yeah,
00:10:06yeah,
00:10:06yeah.
00:10:07The Bears are good now.
00:10:08Yeah,
00:10:09of course,
00:10:10no Bears fan here.
00:10:11So,
00:10:12but like,
00:10:13I guess I'm asking more
00:10:14about this dynamic
00:10:14because we do see it a lot,
00:10:16right,
00:10:16where the backup quarterback's
00:10:17always the most popular
00:10:18guy in town,
00:10:18right?
00:10:19But like,
00:10:19the Vikings,
00:10:20we all think K.O.C.'s
00:10:22quarterback whisperer.
00:10:23Yeah.
00:10:24So,
00:10:24we don't trust him
00:10:25to play J.J. McCarthy
00:10:27if he's the best option?
00:10:29Like,
00:10:29that's the disconnect for me.
00:10:31Like,
00:10:32I get it.
00:10:32I know what you're saying.
00:10:33You maybe have to go in
00:10:34because Carson Wentz
00:10:35has clearly kind of
00:10:36run its course here,
00:10:37but I don't know
00:10:38if I hold much hope
00:10:39that it's going to be
00:10:40significantly better.
00:10:42Yeah,
00:10:42I don't know
00:10:42if they're trying to,
00:10:43you know,
00:10:44they don't want to
00:10:44throw him into the fire.
00:10:45They don't know
00:10:46if he's not ready yet.
00:10:49But yeah,
00:10:49I mean,
00:10:49Wentz was hurting last night.
00:10:50I got to give him
00:10:51some credit.
00:10:52I mean,
00:10:52he was getting tattooed
00:10:54back there.
00:10:55His shoulder was banged up
00:10:56and be out there
00:10:58and finish the game.
00:10:58But also,
00:10:59And he's our age,
00:11:00right?
00:11:00I don't know
00:11:00if we've heard anything
00:11:01from like Vikings,
00:11:02but, you know,
00:11:03if it was a situation
00:11:05where he needed to play,
00:11:07I would feel like
00:11:07more players would be
00:11:08coming out
00:11:08and saying things,
00:11:10which we haven't
00:11:10really seen that yet.
00:11:11Yeah,
00:11:12like he's not just
00:11:12tearing it up at practice
00:11:13and they feel like
00:11:14they're like holding him back.
00:11:15Right.
00:11:16We don't see.
00:11:18But you know what Carson
00:11:19is at this point.
00:11:20Yes.
00:11:20And JJ has like the potential
00:11:22to at least be something.
00:11:24The high pick,
00:11:24the national championship,
00:11:25all the big arm.
00:11:27If it's going to progress,
00:11:28you would think
00:11:29it would be the guy
00:11:30that has the potential.
00:11:31And eventually,
00:11:31you just got to hand
00:11:32the keys to him.
00:11:32Yeah,
00:11:33eventually you have to.
00:11:33He's the first round pick,
00:11:34right?
00:11:34Exactly.
00:11:35He's the franchise.
00:11:36You invested a first round pick
00:11:37in him,
00:11:37an early first round pick.
00:11:39At some point,
00:11:39you're going to have to go in there
00:11:40and see what we got.
00:11:41You have to.
00:11:41Yeah.
00:11:42Ooh,
00:11:43dark times for Vikings fans.
00:11:44I mean,
00:11:45KOC,
00:11:45you're supposed to be the guy
00:11:46and let you let Sam Darnall leave.
00:11:49You let Danny Dimes leave
00:11:50and look at what you have now.
00:11:52Think about that.
00:11:53Yeah.
00:11:53That's right, dude.
00:11:55All right,
00:11:55coming up next,
00:11:56Cade McConnell,
00:11:57Vanderbilt offensive lineman.
00:11:59Smelling salt season, guys.
00:12:01Hey,
00:12:01thanks for hanging out with us.
00:12:03Tell all your friends about it.

00:12:16Smelling salt mustache
00:12:18is ready to go.
00:12:20And,
00:12:20well,
00:12:21boys,
00:12:22we got Cade McConnell
00:12:23from Vandy,
00:12:24one of the hottest teams
00:12:25in the country,
00:12:25one of the most likable
00:12:26and enjoyable teams
00:12:27watching the rise of Vanderbilt
00:12:28the last few years.
00:12:29We got a highlight to show you
00:12:31of Cade in a second,
00:12:32but first,
00:12:32if we get out our sauce,
00:12:33Cade and you as well.
00:12:35It's once a good time.
00:12:37Yeah.
00:12:37Let's go, boys.
00:12:38Oh,
00:12:39yeah.
00:12:42Oh,
00:12:43God.
00:12:43That brings back right there.
00:12:45Oh,
00:12:45yeah.
00:12:46Every drive.
00:12:50Meg,
00:12:50how we feeling?
00:12:51Around the eyes.
00:12:52Wow.
00:12:52Around here.
00:12:53Just a little bit.
00:12:53Oh,
00:12:53really?
00:12:54Oh,
00:12:54I've never done that before.
00:12:58Not too close.
00:12:59I am leaving.
00:12:59The eyes is insane.
00:13:02Cade, baby,
00:13:03what's up, dude?
00:13:04What's up?
00:13:05Okay,
00:13:06so this is Cade McConnell,
00:13:07guys.
00:13:07Can we go ahead and play the highlight
00:13:08to set the scene?
00:13:09Yes, please.
00:13:10Of course,
00:13:11this Vanderbilt team
00:13:12completely changed.
00:13:13Yeah,
00:13:14here it is.
00:13:15Bang!
00:13:15Bang!
00:13:17God,
00:13:17double kill.
00:13:19Cade,
00:13:19what would,
00:13:21bro,
00:13:21take us back to that play,
00:13:23and then get into a little extra.
00:13:24I love an extra shot.
00:13:26Take us back to that play.
00:13:27Is that your favorite play
00:13:29that you've ever had?
00:13:30I think it's got to be,
00:13:32right?
00:13:33Yeah.
00:13:34I don't know if I've done
00:13:35much to many things like that,
00:13:37honestly,
00:13:38in my life.
00:13:38So you were in,
00:13:39so it looks like you just had
00:13:41like a four-eye there.
00:13:42Were you kind of setting out
00:13:44to both guys,
00:13:45but then the guy dropped
00:13:46and you were kind of like
00:13:47looking for work,
00:13:48or what was that?
00:13:49Yeah,
00:13:50yeah,
00:13:50so we were five on five,
00:13:51and we had the boundary drop,
00:13:53so I'm passing that off
00:13:54to my tackle.
00:13:55That's quite the best.
00:13:56I didn't know he fell.
00:13:57Oh,
00:13:57you didn't even know he fell.
00:13:59No,
00:14:00and then so like
00:14:00when I felt my tackle's hip,
00:14:02I just kind of turned around
00:14:03and someone was there,
00:14:04so.
00:14:05I mean,
00:14:05and it's like the second one
00:14:06makes sense,
00:14:07but the power of the punch
00:14:09on the first one,
00:14:10Cade,
00:14:10is crazy.
00:14:11That is excellent strength
00:14:12there,
00:14:12dude.
00:14:13I love that.
00:14:13We call it a snap off.
00:14:13Yeah,
00:14:14it doesn't happen too often.
00:14:14Snap off?
00:14:15Snapping the T.E. off.
00:14:16We just talked about that play
00:14:17that we talked about
00:14:18with Alt last night,
00:14:19right?
00:14:20Like,
00:14:20this is what,
00:14:21at offensive guard
00:14:22in a pass situation,
00:14:24you got to protect your tackle
00:14:25and you got to snap them off.
00:14:26Yeah,
00:14:27well,
00:14:27Cade,
00:14:27Cade,
00:14:28you definitely did that.
00:14:29Take us into
00:14:30the Vanderbilt program
00:14:32and locker room right now
00:14:33because the rise of Vandy
00:14:35under Clark Lee
00:14:36has been astounding.
00:14:38I mean,
00:14:38it was a few years ago
00:14:39where he tits the job
00:14:40and he's talking about
00:14:41wanting to win championships
00:14:42and we're all kind of laughing
00:14:43and saying,
00:14:44oh,
00:14:44well,
00:14:44that's not going to be possible
00:14:45and look at y'all now,
00:14:47man.
00:14:48What do you think's been
00:14:49the key to making this thing
00:14:51that seemed so far-fetched
00:14:52a reality?
00:14:54Yeah,
00:14:54so,
00:14:55you know,
00:14:55you mentioned Coach Clark Lee
00:14:57and I think that he's had
00:14:58the same mission
00:14:59since he's gotten here
00:14:59and it's winning
00:15:00and I think that's at any level
00:15:03that we can make it,
00:15:04we're going to make it.
00:15:04You know,
00:15:05we focus on going 1-0 every week,
00:15:071-0 every game.
00:15:08I think that's really,
00:15:10like,
00:15:10what makes us special
00:15:11is,
00:15:12you know,
00:15:12there can be all this
00:15:13outside noise,
00:15:14no hate on anything.
00:15:15Like,
00:15:15obviously,
00:15:16this stuff is amazing.
00:15:17All this outside noise,
00:15:18but,
00:15:18you know,
00:15:18at the end of the day,
00:15:19we're going to walk
00:15:20in that locker room,
00:15:20we're going to,
00:15:21you know,
00:15:21tie up our cleats
00:15:22and it's 1-0
00:15:23just with our brothers.
00:15:24That's something that Clark Lee,
00:15:25you know,
00:15:26you know,
00:15:26he gives that to us
00:15:27every morning
00:15:28and I think that starts
00:15:30with him,
00:15:30it comes from the top down,
00:15:31you know,
00:15:31Diego says the same
00:15:32exact stuff,
00:15:33maybe in a little
00:15:34different way
00:15:35than Coach Lee.
00:15:37You know,
00:15:37he says the same stuff.
00:15:39Is that the O-line coach?
00:15:40No,
00:15:41Diego Pop,
00:15:41that's the quarterback.
00:15:43Quarterback,
00:15:43quarterback,
00:15:43sorry.
00:15:44No,
00:15:44he's a little,
00:15:45he's a monster.
00:15:46He's just a little,
00:15:47well,
00:15:47I mean,
00:15:48that's what I wanted
00:15:49to ask you about,
00:15:50man,
00:15:50because we all know
00:15:51what it's like
00:15:51to play with
00:15:52a great quarterback
00:15:53and you almost,
00:15:54it's like that like
00:15:55general on a battlefield
00:15:56sort of feel
00:15:57and there may be
00:15:58nobody better
00:15:59in the country
00:15:59in that sense
00:16:00right now
00:16:00than Diego.
00:16:02What do you think
00:16:03makes him
00:16:04like someone
00:16:05that kind of
00:16:06the boys want to
00:16:06follow and fight for?
00:16:08Yeah,
00:16:09I think the special
00:16:10thing about Diego
00:16:10is he's like
00:16:11the ultimate competitor.
00:16:13Like,
00:16:13in anything that he does,
00:16:14he wants to beat
00:16:15somebody at
00:16:15and I think
00:16:17that,
00:16:17you know,
00:16:17it bleeds
00:16:18into all of us
00:16:19as well.
00:16:20He also is like,
00:16:21there's a switch
00:16:22that flips
00:16:22that once he comes
00:16:23off the field,
00:16:23he's the most
00:16:24personable person.
00:16:26You know,
00:16:26he knows every
00:16:27single person's
00:16:28name in the facility.
00:16:29You know,
00:16:29I mean,
00:16:30he's great to be around.
00:16:31He's a great leader.
00:16:32You know,
00:16:32everybody trusts him.
00:16:33I think he's
00:16:33the best quarterback
00:16:34in the country,
00:16:35best football player
00:16:35in the country.
00:16:37So,
00:16:37you know,
00:16:38I love blocking for him.
00:16:39You know,
00:16:39I do a lot
00:16:39for that guy
00:16:40and a lot
00:16:42I wouldn't say on here,
00:16:43but I do a lot
00:16:43for that guy.
00:16:44Let's go,
00:16:46dude.
00:16:47What's the O-line room
00:16:48like camaraderie-wise?
00:16:50Are you guys
00:16:50chilling outside
00:16:51the facility?
00:16:53I know like O-linemen
00:16:54we're easy to hang out
00:16:55with.
00:16:55I love O-offensive linemen
00:16:57with everything in me.
00:16:59So,
00:17:00what's that like?
00:17:01You guys,
00:17:01you know,
00:17:02get food every week,
00:17:03the chilling
00:17:04on the outside.
00:17:05What's that
00:17:05looking like?
00:17:07Yeah,
00:17:07so we do the
00:17:08quick and strong side.
00:17:10So,
00:17:10we flip.
00:17:11So,
00:17:11my quick tackle.
00:17:11That's right.
00:17:12I forgot about that.
00:17:13We hang out like
00:17:14we're with each other
00:17:15every single day.
00:17:16I'm not in classes
00:17:16because we do have
00:17:17in-person classes
00:17:18at Vanderbilt.
00:17:20He is not
00:17:21in-person classes,
00:17:23so he's kind of
00:17:24chilling at the facility
00:17:24more than me.
00:17:25But,
00:17:25you know,
00:17:26if we're not watching film
00:17:27with the whole O-line,
00:17:28then we're hanging out,
00:17:29going to get food.
00:17:30Obviously,
00:17:30we eat 24-7.
00:17:33But no,
00:17:33dude,
00:17:33our O-line is like
00:17:34the closest I've been around.
00:17:36You know,
00:17:36we're all best friends
00:17:37in there.
00:17:37We all come from
00:17:38different schools.
00:17:39All five of us,
00:17:40starters,
00:17:40have played somewhere else.
00:17:42Oh,
00:17:42wow.
00:17:42Played,
00:17:43but went to school
00:17:43somewhere else.
00:17:45And yeah,
00:17:46so it really is just like
00:17:47we're all a band of misfits.
00:17:48You know,
00:17:49Coach Lee says that
00:17:49all the time.
00:17:50And I think our O-line
00:17:51really is just a band of,
00:17:53you know,
00:17:5420 misfits
00:17:54that are put together.
00:17:56So,
00:17:56okay,
00:17:57you mentioned flipping
00:17:58and this is terrible.
00:17:59Like,
00:17:59I should have been on this.
00:18:00I mean,
00:18:00what are some of the,
00:18:01I mean,
00:18:01Zach,
00:18:02do you actually,
00:18:02do you?
00:18:02Well,
00:18:03I'm curious
00:18:03because I've never been
00:18:04a part of a line
00:18:05that does the quick
00:18:06and strong side.
00:18:06So,
00:18:07what is,
00:18:07are you running
00:18:10plays that you're running
00:18:11on both sides?
00:18:11Or like,
00:18:12how does practice work?
00:18:13Are you constantly
00:18:13flip-flopping right,
00:18:15left,
00:18:15right,
00:18:15left,
00:18:15or what?
00:18:17Yeah,
00:18:17so we flip with the strength.
00:18:20So,
00:18:20you know,
00:18:21strong side,
00:18:22quick side,
00:18:22obviously.
00:18:23It's really weak side.
00:18:24I think we just don't
00:18:24like calling them weak side.
00:18:25But,
00:18:27you know,
00:18:28we don't have the same plays.
00:18:31We run,
00:18:31you know,
00:18:31the same play
00:18:32regardless of the strength
00:18:33and they can give us strength
00:18:34and flip the call
00:18:35or,
00:18:36you know,
00:18:36trade the tight ends
00:18:37and stuff like that.
00:18:37So,
00:18:38you really have to know
00:18:38the whole offense.
00:18:39Yeah.
00:18:40I think switching
00:18:42from left to right,
00:18:43that's hard.
00:18:44People ask me all the time
00:18:45and I almost would rather
00:18:46move from guard to tackle
00:18:48on the same side
00:18:49than switch
00:18:50from left to right.
00:18:51So,
00:18:52people don't understand
00:18:52how hard that is
00:18:53to cross-train like that
00:18:54for a whole season.
00:18:56Yeah.
00:18:56Yeah.
00:18:57We do get a lot of,
00:18:58we get a lot of like,
00:18:59oh,
00:18:59you know,
00:18:59why would you guys do that?
00:19:00Why would you guys do that?
00:19:01And we really kind of
00:19:03embrace it a little bit.
00:19:04Obviously,
00:19:05for the next level,
00:19:06it's good that your feet
00:19:06are right and both
00:19:07right and left.
00:19:09But,
00:19:10you know,
00:19:10we kind of embrace it.
00:19:11You know,
00:19:11like I said,
00:19:12we're abandoned misfits,
00:19:13dude.
00:19:13And,
00:19:14you know,
00:19:14people might,
00:19:14people think it's weird,
00:19:15you know,
00:19:15across the country
00:19:16and,
00:19:16you know,
00:19:17let it be weird.
00:19:18We're,
00:19:18we're a weird group of guys.
00:19:19I love it.
00:19:20I love it.
00:19:20I love it.
00:19:22Well,
00:19:23that weird group of guys now,
00:19:25another massive game
00:19:26in Nashville this weekend.
00:19:28What's it like playing
00:19:29in that stadium,
00:19:30man?
00:19:31Because even,
00:19:31even,
00:19:31even as,
00:19:32you know,
00:19:32even last year,
00:19:33Coach Saban,
00:19:34who,
00:19:35you know,
00:19:35we all respect and love,
00:19:37he even had some jokes
00:19:38about like,
00:19:38you know,
00:19:39playing in Nashville
00:19:39and home field advantage
00:19:41or lack thereof,
00:19:42but felt,
00:19:43it's felt pretty damn strong
00:19:44thus far this year,
00:19:45man.
00:19:45It's going to be pretty live
00:19:46this weekend.
00:19:48Yeah,
00:19:48it's definitely going to be
00:19:49a fun one this weekend.
00:19:50You know,
00:19:50the stadium,
00:19:51so my first year here
00:19:52was last year
00:19:53and the new side
00:19:54was completely
00:19:55like just construction
00:19:56last year.
00:19:58So,
00:19:58you know,
00:19:59we're in a concrete jungle
00:20:00out there.
00:20:00Now it looks all pretty,
00:20:01but,
00:20:02you know,
00:20:02when we walk in there,
00:20:03you know,
00:20:03it's still our home
00:20:04and it's still
00:20:05that concrete jungle
00:20:06we all battled in
00:20:07the last two years.
00:20:09Fans are coming out
00:20:10and it's awesome
00:20:11to see Nashville
00:20:12rally around
00:20:13Vanderbilt football.
00:20:13I think Diego
00:20:14and Coach Lee
00:20:14and Candace Lee,
00:20:16our AD,
00:20:16have done a great job
00:20:17at that.
00:20:18But no,
00:20:19dude,
00:20:19this weekend
00:20:19is going to be awesome.
00:20:20Obviously,
00:20:20college game day
00:20:21is once in a lifetime
00:20:22experience
00:20:22and Mizzou
00:20:23is a great football team.
00:20:24I obviously think
00:20:25we're a great football team,
00:20:26so it's going to be
00:20:27a heavyweight matchup
00:20:28and I'm excited about it.
00:20:29What are you seeing
00:20:30on tape from Mizzou
00:20:31thus far?
00:20:32Good.
00:20:33Good D-line.
00:20:34The front seven,
00:20:34obviously,
00:20:35we're playing the SEC.
00:20:37It's going to be great
00:20:37every single week.
00:20:39Always the back end
00:20:39of the defense
00:20:40is always going to be good.
00:20:41You know,
00:20:41it's really weapons
00:20:42against weapons
00:20:42every week
00:20:43as long as we do
00:20:44our job up front
00:20:45and obviously
00:20:46that's what we're going
00:20:46to go in the game
00:20:47and think we're going to do.
00:20:49But obviously,
00:20:50it's going to be a challenge.
00:20:51It's going to be
00:20:51a really fun challenge though
00:20:52and I'm excited
00:20:52to get out there Saturday.
00:20:54You know,
00:20:55Big Ten front sevens
00:20:56are pretty good too,
00:20:56man.
00:20:57Just saying.
00:20:57I don't know, dude.
00:20:59I don't know, dude.
00:21:00Last question for me
00:21:01after the season,
00:21:02I am coming down
00:21:03to Nashville.
00:21:03I don't think
00:21:04it's even a question.
00:21:05We're going to hang out.
00:21:06We're going to hit Broadway.
00:21:08I can't wait.
00:21:09Thanks for coming on, dude.
00:21:10I'll text you later.
00:21:13That's very funny.
00:21:14He said last question
00:21:15from me.
00:21:17I don't think
00:21:17it's a question.
00:21:18I'm sure what the voice.
00:21:20Can we hang out?
00:21:22No, we are hanging out.
00:21:24No, it's not a question.
00:21:26It was both
00:21:27literally not a question
00:21:29and that they are hanging out
00:21:30and it did not end
00:21:31in a question.
00:21:31No, I didn't even
00:21:32give him an answer.
00:21:32Hey, Cade,
00:21:34go kick ass this weekend, man.
00:21:36Thanks for coming on.
00:21:37Congrats.
00:21:38Big boy of the week.
00:21:39Let's go.
00:21:39Cade McConnell,
00:21:40absolute legend, man.
00:21:41Game day Saturday
00:21:42in Nashville.
00:21:43Good luck, man.
00:21:43Appreciate you, brother.
00:21:44Appreciate it, boys.
00:21:44Thank you, guys.
00:21:45All right, there you go,
00:21:46Cade McConnell.
00:21:47Yeah, good vibes
00:21:48on that guy.
00:21:48I love it.
00:21:49The quick side,
00:21:50strong side thing
00:21:50is crazy.
00:21:51I called him after the game
00:21:52and I was like,
00:21:53what is that?
00:21:54He's right there.
00:21:55I called him
00:21:55and he was explaining it
00:21:57and I was like,
00:21:57dude, I feel like
00:21:58when you're so dialed in
00:22:01on one side,
00:22:03your feet,
00:22:03your mechanics,
00:22:04everything,
00:22:05what hand you're punching with
00:22:06and now you have to flip
00:22:08everything in your brain
00:22:09every single play.
00:22:10You don't even know
00:22:11what the next play is
00:22:12if you're going to be
00:22:13on the left or right side.
00:22:14And he was like,
00:22:14yeah, it's crazy.
00:22:16But when you gel,
00:22:17because as a guard,
00:22:19you're always gelling
00:22:19with the center
00:22:20on every play.
00:22:21But when you're traveling
00:22:22with a tackle
00:22:23that you gel with,
00:22:24I feel like that makes it easier.
00:22:26But it's still
00:22:27the flipping of the brain
00:22:28and flipping your mechanics
00:22:30is what drives me.
00:22:30And also,
00:22:31you've got to have
00:22:32your coaches mix up the scheme
00:22:34and come up with different ways
00:22:35because when I'm watching tape,
00:22:37I would think
00:22:38strong side, quick side,
00:22:39there's a lot of tells
00:22:40to pick up.
00:22:40So the coach has got to be
00:22:41on it to mix it up
00:22:42and make it look the same
00:22:43on both sides.
00:22:44Well, and I guess
00:22:45actually through that
00:22:46then though,
00:22:46I guess it could open up
00:22:48some interesting
00:22:49play calling opportunities.
00:22:50Because nobody else
00:22:52is doing it right.
00:22:53And so you could kind of
00:22:54subvert expectations
00:22:55in a lot of ways.
00:22:56Like, hey,
00:22:58if they're in this,
00:23:00when the strong side
00:23:01goes to the right
00:23:01and they're running this,
00:23:02then you can maybe
00:23:03flip and be like,
00:23:04okay, let's run
00:23:05the opposite way
00:23:06so that defense,
00:23:07I don't know what I'm saying.
00:23:08No, no, no, no, no.
00:23:08I know what I'm saying.
00:23:10Imagine being the defense
00:23:11how confused you are.
00:23:13You're saying exactly
00:23:14what I was like.
00:23:15I agree with you.
00:23:17I don't know exactly
00:23:18what it would look like,
00:23:19but it is so
00:23:20different that there's
00:23:21some kind of
00:23:21against the grain
00:23:22opportunities.
00:23:23I don't know.
00:23:23I kind of maybe
00:23:25have a little bit
00:23:26of, not insight,
00:23:28I don't know.
00:23:29I kind of feel
00:23:29where they're coming from
00:23:30because I was never
00:23:31quite good enough
00:23:32to just fully submit
00:23:34myself at a single
00:23:35position every year.
00:23:35So I started one year
00:23:36at center,
00:23:37one year at right guard,
00:23:37one year at left guard.
00:23:38In my senior year,
00:23:39even though I was
00:23:40starting at guard,
00:23:40I would do two plays
00:23:41left guard,
00:23:42two plays center,
00:23:42two plays right guard.
00:23:43That sucks.
00:23:44And so it was like,
00:23:45I know then two plays out.
00:23:46I'm like, what?
00:23:47I'm thinking more reps
00:23:48than everybody.
00:23:51But the point is
00:23:53if you're doing it
00:23:55consistently,
00:23:55it really does start
00:23:57to become second nature,
00:23:58the kind of footwork
00:23:59and everything.
00:24:00And I'm sure that,
00:24:01what I wonder is,
00:24:02during individual,
00:24:04are they,
00:24:04I guess it just all
00:24:05comes to the place.
00:24:07That's where I went.
00:24:08I'm like,
00:24:08what does individual look like?
00:24:09Yeah,
00:24:10like are you taking it
00:24:11from both sides
00:24:12or then is it just
00:24:13through team
00:24:14because they're going
00:24:14to be flipping?
00:24:15Very interesting.
00:24:17Watch for this Saturday,
00:24:18guys.
00:24:18When you watch
00:24:20the Mizzou-Vandy game,
00:24:21it's a completely
00:24:21unique offense.
00:24:23Jerry Kill coming over
00:24:24from New Mexico
00:24:24with Diego Pavia
00:24:26a couple of years ago
00:24:27and it's been
00:24:28incredible since.
00:24:30All right, guys,
00:24:31coming up next here
00:24:31on Wake Up Barstool,
00:24:33it's time to go
00:24:33inside of Zach
00:24:34as we talk Cowboys,
00:24:37we talk Notre Dame,
00:24:38his brain.
00:24:39We talk Notre Dame,
00:24:41life in the NFL,
00:24:42everything.
00:24:43Coming up next,
00:24:44don't go anywhere
00:24:45here on FS1.
00:24:47Awesome.
00:24:50What's happening, y'all?
00:24:51Welcome back here
00:24:52to Wake Up Barstool.
00:24:54It's been a very fun morning.
00:24:55We got the big boys here.
00:24:56We got the NFL legend,
00:24:58Zach Martin.
00:24:58Bro, I just keep finding
00:25:00crazier and crazier
00:25:02anecdotes about how good
00:25:04you were at football.
00:25:06In 2019,
00:25:08Martin became one of five
00:25:09offensive linemen ever
00:25:10to secure a Pro Bowl
00:25:12invitation in each
00:25:13of their first six seasons.
00:25:15It's you,
00:25:16Lou Creekmer,
00:25:17John Morris,
00:25:18Joe Thomas,
00:25:19and Richmond Webb.
00:25:20Crazy part about that,
00:25:21I mean,
00:25:21you and Joe are the only
00:25:22people near the kind
00:25:24of modern era
00:25:25to achieve that.
00:25:26And then how about this,
00:25:26Kate?
00:25:27In 2022,
00:25:28started all 17 games,
00:25:291,143 snaps,
00:25:33one holding penalty,
00:25:34not a single sack.
00:25:35Wow.
00:25:36Again,
00:25:38the list goes on and on.
00:25:40Nine-time Pro Bowler,
00:25:41seven holding penalties
00:25:42accepted for the year
00:25:43in 11 years.
00:25:45As many all pros as pros.
00:25:47It's insane.
00:25:47It's insane.
00:25:48Pure discipline.
00:25:49Just beast.
00:25:52When did you,
00:25:53when did you know
00:25:56that you were like,
00:25:58okay,
00:25:58like I'm actually
00:25:59a bit different?
00:26:00Was it like,
00:26:01was it literally,
00:26:01I mean,
00:26:02I'm used to be a recruit.
00:26:02And I guess what I mean
00:26:05is I'm not even talking
00:26:06just like high school recruiting
00:26:07because that's when,
00:26:08you know,
00:26:08you start getting D1 offers,
00:26:09everybody's like,
00:26:09you're probably ranked
00:26:10really high,
00:26:11but like you're different,
00:26:12different.
00:26:13Did you ever come to
00:26:14the realization,
00:26:15like,
00:26:15oh,
00:26:15I'm the best?
00:26:16I made a huge jump
00:26:17my senior and fifth year
00:26:20year at Notre Dame.
00:26:22Okay.
00:26:22We had a line coach,
00:26:23chief,
00:26:23I'll know his name,
00:26:24Harry Heastan.
00:26:24Oh, yeah.
00:26:25He came in
00:26:26my true senior year
00:26:28and really changed
00:26:30everything about
00:26:31my football game.
00:26:33Really?
00:26:33Yeah.
00:26:34I mean,
00:26:34just like the mentality
00:26:35of it.
00:26:37I get chills thinking
00:26:38about it,
00:26:38man.
00:26:38I got chills.
00:26:38Like the importance
00:26:40of the offensive line
00:26:41brotherhood and how much
00:26:42that means and who you
00:26:43play for,
00:26:44like everything.
00:26:44My mindset about football
00:26:45just changed
00:26:46and I kind of hit
00:26:47the ground right.
00:26:48I was always a solid
00:26:49player,
00:26:49good player,
00:26:49but I attribute a lot
00:26:52to him coming in there
00:26:53and,
00:26:54you know,
00:26:54just changing my mindset,
00:26:56honestly.
00:26:56Well,
00:26:56it made him like
00:26:57lineman you.
00:26:58He had so many
00:26:59first-round picks
00:27:00and that was not
00:27:01the case for 20 years
00:27:03before he got there.
00:27:04What made him
00:27:05so different?
00:27:06Well,
00:27:07his mentor
00:27:08was Joe Moore,
00:27:10the great Joe Moore.
00:27:11Oh, wow.
00:27:11He was the line coach,
00:27:12obviously,
00:27:13Pittsburgh,
00:27:13Notre Dame,
00:27:14all the All-Americans.
00:27:16So when he came to Notre Dame,
00:27:17I remember sitting down
00:27:18with him having a meeting
00:27:19and his plan was
00:27:20we need to restore
00:27:21the tradition back
00:27:22into the Notre Dame
00:27:22offensive line.
00:27:23And I got a lot
00:27:25of pride in that
00:27:25because it's still
00:27:26going to this space.
00:27:26He's got Joe Alts
00:27:28in his second year,
00:27:28all these guys coming out,
00:27:30Ronnie Stanley,
00:27:31Quentin Nelson,
00:27:31Nick Martin,
00:27:33Mike McGlin,
00:27:33the names go on and on.
00:27:36So that was kind of
00:27:37our goal
00:27:37and it's cool
00:27:38to see that
00:27:39that tradition
00:27:40at Notre Dame
00:27:40is back
00:27:41and cooking with gas.
00:27:43Yeah, dude,
00:27:43last year's O-line
00:27:44had like seven guys.
00:27:46Like there were injuries
00:27:47the next guy up
00:27:48kept playing well.
00:27:49A couple got paid
00:27:50to transfer for big money.
00:27:52Yeah,
00:27:53but it's a mindset.
00:27:53What happened, BK?
00:27:54Where's that now?
00:27:56You know,
00:27:56I mean,
00:27:57we got tackles.
00:27:58He said one to the Bears.
00:27:59Yeah, dude,
00:28:00we got tackles great
00:28:01now in the 30s
00:28:02down in Baton Rouge
00:28:03right now.
00:28:05Say it louder.
00:28:05Okay,
00:28:07let's talk Notre Dame
00:28:08then though.
00:28:10I guess we'll start with
00:28:11before we get to Notre Dame
00:28:12now,
00:28:13your time at Notre Dame
00:28:15because you obviously still
00:28:16have a lot of love
00:28:17for the school, man.
00:28:18I love Notre Dame.
00:28:20You know,
00:28:20my closest,
00:28:20I was telling KDIC last night,
00:28:22you know,
00:28:22my closest friends
00:28:23are all Notre Dame guys,
00:28:24guys that I live with
00:28:25my entire career there.
00:28:28But also kind of
00:28:29just what I talked about
00:28:30with the offensive line,
00:28:31it was cool
00:28:31to kind of be a part
00:28:32of getting Notre Dame
00:28:34back to,
00:28:35you know,
00:28:35relevance a little bit.
00:28:37My first year
00:28:38was Coach Weiss's
00:28:40last year.
00:28:41So we went 6-6,
00:28:42didn't go to a bowl game.
00:28:43I registered that year.
00:28:44I'm kind of like,
00:28:44what is college football?
00:28:46What is this?
00:28:46What did I sign up for?
00:28:47Right.
00:28:47And then,
00:28:47you know,
00:28:48the first two years
00:28:48with Kelly
00:28:49weren't very good.
00:28:50And then that 2012 season,
00:28:53we kind of caught,
00:28:54you know,
00:28:55lightning in a bottle.
00:28:56I took it and ran.
00:28:57And, you know,
00:28:58they've had years
00:28:58where they've gone back.
00:28:59But I would say
00:29:00for the most part,
00:29:01consistently since 2012,
00:29:02they've been,
00:29:03you know,
00:29:04they've been a top 25 team.
00:29:05Most years,
00:29:06we've had 10 wins or less.
00:29:08Right, yes.
00:29:08So it's cool
00:29:09to be a part of something
00:29:10like that.
00:29:10Obviously,
00:29:10you got a chance
00:29:11to play in a national championship.
00:29:12Didn't go according to plan.
00:29:15Neither did mine.
00:29:16Neither did mine.
00:29:17Yeah, we both get it.
00:29:19Alabama, Nick Saban.
00:29:20I really blame Kansas State
00:29:21because that's the,
00:29:23Kansas State should have,
00:29:24we should have played
00:29:25Kansas State.
00:29:26Dude, that is right.
00:29:27Colin Klein and Kansas State
00:29:28and then they blew it
00:29:29like last game of the season.
00:29:30I forgot about that.
00:29:31They let Alabama
00:29:32with one loss get in.
00:29:34Bro, this is,
00:29:34this is the same thing
00:29:36that I went through.
00:29:38Because we beat Alabama
00:29:39in Tuscaloosa.
00:29:41And then Oklahoma State
00:29:42should have made it,
00:29:42but they screwed up
00:29:43a Friday night game
00:29:44against Iowa State.
00:29:45And so they put Bama in there.
00:29:47See, guys,
00:29:48they just wanted to make
00:29:48Big Bama happen.
00:29:50Okay?
00:29:51All right,
00:29:52so what about Notre Dame
00:29:52this year, man?
00:29:53Look, it's a weird thing.
00:29:55I know how it started,
00:29:57but those two losses
00:29:58have kind of continued
00:29:59to appreciate in value
00:30:00for the most part.
00:30:01And after surviving last week,
00:30:03well, actually dominating
00:30:04USC by the end,
00:30:05it looks like they're set up
00:30:07for another 10-2
00:30:08in a playoff run.
00:30:09Yeah, I was down in Miami
00:30:11for the opener
00:30:12and obviously there was
00:30:13a lot of excitement
00:30:13down there.
00:30:14And a little bit
00:30:15of a disappointment
00:30:16that first game
00:30:16and they have a great one
00:30:17against Texas A&M,
00:30:18you know,
00:30:18just fall a little bit short.
00:30:19But I do like how
00:30:20they're battle-tested early.
00:30:21Yes.
00:30:22Like, I think they're
00:30:22going to be hitting
00:30:23their stride
00:30:23at a perfect time.
00:30:25Like, they battle-tested early,
00:30:27they're getting better,
00:30:28they're starting to really
00:30:29get after teams,
00:30:30and I think, you know,
00:30:32at 10-2,
00:30:32if they can win out,
00:30:34they're going to get in
00:30:34and they're going to be
00:30:35playing as good as anyone
00:30:36in the country at that point.
00:30:37I wouldn't want to see
00:30:37Notre Dame in the playoffs.
00:30:38Hell no.
00:30:39With the two backs,
00:30:40the quarterbacks playing.
00:30:41I did.
00:30:42I can understand that.
00:30:4698 yards.
00:30:47Yeah.
00:30:48And, I mean,
00:30:49C.J. Carr's
00:30:50continued to get better
00:30:51and better.
00:30:51Yeah, that was like
00:30:52the little thing,
00:30:53I'm sure, Chief,
00:30:53like, the first two weeks,
00:30:55everyone's pissed
00:30:56that we're 0-2,
00:30:57but there's also that
00:30:58C.J. Carr.
00:30:59But he's doing good.
00:31:00Like, the plays that he made
00:31:01against Miami were sick.
00:31:03And that's an element
00:31:03they did not have
00:31:04in offense last year.
00:31:05So, and I love Riley Leonard,
00:31:07tough as nails.
00:31:08Gamer.
00:31:08You know how to throw the ball,
00:31:09spread everybody out,
00:31:10just makes Jeremiah Love's job.
00:31:11And the offensive line of job
00:31:12is so much more easy.
00:31:13How did they get
00:31:14Lloyd Carr's grandkid
00:31:15to go to Notre Dame?
00:31:17I don't know.
00:31:18He fired Lloyd Carr.
00:31:18He spent, man,
00:31:19when he spins it,
00:31:21it just comes off
00:31:21his hand different.
00:31:22It really does,
00:31:24like as good as this year is
00:31:26and looks like it's going to be,
00:31:27the long-term future
00:31:29of Notre Dame
00:31:30having him at quarterback.
00:31:31And then, obviously,
00:31:31Marcus Freeman at coach.
00:31:33What do you find,
00:31:35kind of,
00:31:36and I don't know
00:31:36if you have insight here,
00:31:37but going from Kelly
00:31:39to Freeman,
00:31:39it's an interesting thing
00:31:41where a lot of times
00:31:42schools are very hesitant
00:31:43to, I think,
00:31:43hire from within.
00:31:44Yep.
00:31:45But, like,
00:31:45I remember how pumped
00:31:46the boys were
00:31:47when Freeman was announced.
00:31:49What have you heard
00:31:49about?
00:31:50Yeah, I think,
00:31:50I think the,
00:31:51when Kelly left
00:31:52for LSU,
00:31:53I think a lot of
00:31:54the veteran guys
00:31:55on the team
00:31:55kind of went in
00:31:56and stood on the table
00:31:57for Marcus.
00:31:58And, you know,
00:31:59that obviously
00:32:00went a long way
00:32:01with, you know,
00:32:02the brass at Notre Dame
00:32:03there.
00:32:04And, you know,
00:32:05I thought they made
00:32:05a great call.
00:32:06I mean,
00:32:06I've spent a little bit
00:32:07of time with him,
00:32:08had some interactions
00:32:09with him,
00:32:09and he's got a lot
00:32:11of energy.
00:32:11He can connect
00:32:12with the players.
00:32:12The guy can recruit.
00:32:14And he's just getting
00:32:14better.
00:32:15Like, this is not
00:32:16a finished product.
00:32:17He's still in his 30s.
00:32:18I think he's maybe
00:32:19a couple years older
00:32:19than me.
00:32:20I would give him
00:32:20a 40-year contract.
00:32:22Yeah, like,
00:32:22he's going to be
00:32:23continuing getting
00:32:24better at coaching
00:32:24and the more
00:32:26experience he gets,
00:32:26and it's a good time
00:32:28to be a Notre Dame fan.
00:32:29They're going to be
00:32:29pumping him in there.
00:32:30It's a good time.
00:32:31I am convinced
00:32:32he'll get one.
00:32:32I don't know
00:32:33if it's this year,
00:32:33but I think Marcus
00:32:34Freeman will win
00:32:35a national championship
00:32:35game.
00:32:35I'm with you.
00:32:36If he stays.
00:32:37Yeah, and Ohio State
00:32:39would be the only one
00:32:39that would scare me.
00:32:40There was like
00:32:41Penn State, Florida rumors,
00:32:42and he's like,
00:32:43no.
00:32:43Yeah, absolutely not.
00:32:44He can, yeah,
00:32:45he can, I mean,
00:32:46get that Signetti.
00:32:47Just so much more
00:32:48I was about to say,
00:32:48he can use all these
00:32:50open jobs just to leverage.
00:32:52What were you going
00:32:52to say, man?
00:32:52He's just so much
00:32:53more digestible.
00:32:54Oh, than Kelly?
00:32:55Visually, like,
00:32:56yeah.
00:32:56He seems sincere
00:32:59and genuine.
00:32:59Oh, I was thinking
00:33:00of like when he walks
00:33:01into a house to recruit,
00:33:03like, he can sell
00:33:04not only Notre Dame
00:33:05but himself to the parents
00:33:07and the players.
00:33:07He doesn't even need
00:33:08a sidekick to help him.
00:33:09He can go in there
00:33:10perfect, just nice.
00:33:11Yeah, and he's very
00:33:12good looking.
00:33:13I'm sure the recruits'
00:33:14moms are like,
00:33:15yeah, come on.
00:33:16You want another plate?
00:33:19I bet he smells good, too.
00:33:21He looks like a man
00:33:22that smells really good.
00:33:22I would agree with that.
00:33:24He models his own
00:33:25clothing line.
00:33:25Yeah.
00:33:26Like, he's got his own
00:33:27coaching career.
00:33:27So he knows.
00:33:28Yeah, he's a hot dude.
00:33:29He knows what he's doing.
00:33:30He's in the weight room.
00:33:30He's getting after it.
00:33:31He knows what he's doing.
00:33:32All right, then.
00:33:33You said it's a good time
00:33:34to be a Notre Dame fan.
00:33:35Is it a good time
00:33:37to be a Cowboys fan?
00:33:39This is an interesting
00:33:41question because
00:33:42the offense is incredible,
00:33:44especially Adam Pickens.
00:33:45It looks like you're damned
00:33:46if you do, damned if you don't.
00:33:48But the defense kind of
00:33:49got awful right now.
00:33:51Yeah, I mean,
00:33:51I hate, I don't, you know,
00:33:52I don't want to talk
00:33:53bad about the Cowboys,
00:33:54but objectively the defense
00:33:55is not good, right?
00:33:56I mean, just look at the stats,
00:33:57right?
00:33:57Yeah, it's not good.
00:33:58And I think you do have
00:34:00to take a step back
00:34:01and realize they did trade
00:34:03arguably the best defensive
00:34:04player a week before the season.
00:34:06Bold move.
00:34:06So let's calm down
00:34:07a little bit.
00:34:08A lot of our back end stuff,
00:34:09I mean, when the pass rush
00:34:10is humming,
00:34:11the back end becomes
00:34:12a lot easier, right?
00:34:12Yeah.
00:34:13But I did play, you know,
00:34:15I know Coach Fluse.
00:34:16I know, you know,
00:34:17Chicago guys have their feelings,
00:34:18but I do know how he coaches.
00:34:20And I think, you know,
00:34:21he's a, not necessarily plays,
00:34:23he's a how you play the game.
00:34:25And those guys on defense
00:34:27will get it humming
00:34:27and at least, you know,
00:34:29they're going to be competitive.
00:34:30They score nonstop.
00:34:31Yes.
00:34:31The offense has been
00:34:33as good an offense
00:34:33as I've seen in the league
00:34:34all year.
00:34:35Yeah, they are a classic,
00:34:37like, we talked about
00:34:38this the other day,
00:34:38you do not want to see them
00:34:40in a wild card round
00:34:41or something like that.
00:34:42Because, like,
00:34:42on any given day,
00:34:44they got that puncher's chance
00:34:45of knocking anybody
00:34:46in the league out
00:34:47because of Dak,
00:34:48because of CeeDee and Pickens.
00:34:50And when CeeDee's out,
00:34:51Dak and Pickens
00:34:51get the chemistry going,
00:34:52now he's, it's like, yes.
00:34:53And then Jake Ferguson.
00:34:55Jake Ferguson.
00:34:55I mean, it's just, it's just.
00:34:56Badger.
00:34:57Yeah, it's weapon after weapon.
00:35:01Talk to me about Dak Prescott
00:35:03because he is someone
00:35:05who should be celebrated
00:35:07and liked.
00:35:08He's overcome
00:35:09a ton of adversity.
00:35:10He was a lower round pick
00:35:11at that position especially
00:35:13that has now made it.
00:35:14He's playing out of his mind
00:35:15and yet it just seems like
00:35:17because he has a star
00:35:18on his helmet
00:35:18that he just gets hated on.
00:35:20Dude, when Cade was talking
00:35:22about Diego,
00:35:23Diego,
00:35:24like, that's what I think
00:35:26about Dak.
00:35:27Everyone in that organization,
00:35:29everyone wants to win,
00:35:30but there's a little extra
00:35:31to win for that guy.
00:35:32Just what he means
00:35:33to that organization.
00:35:35He's a leader of men.
00:35:36That's like the best compliment
00:35:37I can give him.
00:35:38Like, he is the best leader
00:35:39of men that I've ever been around
00:35:41and he's just a guy's guy.
00:35:44I mean, he's just,
00:35:44he works his ass off.
00:35:46He, you know,
00:35:47he puts more time in
00:35:48than anyone
00:35:48and he's a competitor.
00:35:51The dude's the biggest competitor
00:35:52and the other thing
00:35:53you just said,
00:35:54adversity, man.
00:35:55Like, when people talk about
00:35:56like going through adversity,
00:35:57I would say,
00:35:57you know,
00:35:58I've kind of gone through a few.
00:35:59This guy's been through
00:36:00serious adversity
00:36:01and you would never know it.
00:36:03I mean,
00:36:03smiling on his face
00:36:04every day,
00:36:04coming to work.
00:36:05A lot of guys play
00:36:07for that guy down in Dallas.
00:36:08And look,
00:36:09and now,
00:36:10I mean,
00:36:11one of the leading
00:36:12MVP candidates
00:36:13and if that defense
00:36:14does catch a little fire
00:36:15and all of a sudden
00:36:16you start winning some games,
00:36:17that could become
00:36:18a very real thing.
00:36:19They have a championship offense.
00:36:20I gotta give the O-line
00:36:22some love, man.
00:36:22They've played nine guys
00:36:25this year
00:36:26in the first seven games
00:36:27and they have not
00:36:28missed a beat.
00:36:28You know,
00:36:29Brock Hoffman,
00:36:30TJ Bass,
00:36:31these guys that have played
00:36:33over the last couple years
00:36:34that have been called upon
00:36:35again early in the season
00:36:36and they've stepped in
00:36:37and done it.
00:36:37Do they call you
00:36:38at any point?
00:36:39I talk to those guys still.
00:36:40No,
00:36:40I meant like,
00:36:41wow.
00:36:42That's why I dropped
00:36:44the weight early.
00:36:45I'm done.
00:36:46I'm done.
00:36:47But do you still
00:36:48talk to the boys?
00:36:49Oh yeah,
00:36:50absolutely.
00:36:50I was gonna ask,
00:36:51do they call you
00:36:52and be like,
00:36:52hey,
00:36:52what did you ever see
00:36:53from this guy
00:36:54if they were playing
00:36:55like a D lineman
00:36:56and they're like,
00:36:57hey,
00:36:57is there any tendencies
00:36:58that you can give me
00:36:59that you saw
00:36:59from blah,
00:37:00blah,
00:37:01blah?
00:37:01Not really,
00:37:03not a whole lot this year
00:37:05but we did a great job
00:37:06in our room.
00:37:06We would do these studies
00:37:07so like on Fridays
00:37:08we would have like,
00:37:09our meeting in the morning
00:37:10would be a player-led meeting
00:37:12so each guy,
00:37:13we would have like
00:37:14the backups
00:37:14and the practice squad guys
00:37:16would have a single guy
00:37:17to study
00:37:18and they would present
00:37:19that guy in front of the room.
00:37:20Gotcha.
00:37:20And then like,
00:37:21so if it was the three technique
00:37:22that I was matched up
00:37:23with that week,
00:37:24the guy would give
00:37:25his presentation,
00:37:26talk about it,
00:37:26we would have some dialogue,
00:37:27I'd kind of read my notes
00:37:29so everyone's kind of
00:37:29on the same page
00:37:30like,
00:37:30hey,
00:37:30this guy,
00:37:31because you know
00:37:31in the NFL nowadays
00:37:32these guys aren't lining up
00:37:34in the same spot,
00:37:35you know,
00:37:35premier rushers are moving
00:37:36and picking their guys
00:37:37so everyone kind of hears
00:37:39like,
00:37:39all right,
00:37:39if this guy,
00:37:40if this D-tackle lines up
00:37:41at end randomly,
00:37:43all right,
00:37:43these are his two or three moves
00:37:44that he likes to go to
00:37:45so a lot of dialogue
00:37:46of,
00:37:47you know,
00:37:48different players
00:37:49going on Friday morning,
00:37:50yeah.
00:37:51God,
00:37:51dude,
00:37:51we'll continue to pick your brain
00:37:53for the rest of the show,
00:37:54I have a million questions
00:37:55that I still want to ask
00:37:58but we also like making money
00:38:00and Megan has been
00:38:02on fire this year
00:38:04so when we get back here
00:38:06on Wake Up Barstool
00:38:07we will once again
00:38:08head to the money corner
00:38:09as Megan gives you
00:38:10her best plays of the weekend,
00:38:12this is Wake Up Barstool.
00:38:14Grab a coffee,
00:38:14guys,
00:38:15Friday,
00:38:15the weekend.
00:38:16Yes.
00:38:17Here,
00:38:17let's go,
00:38:18dude.
00:38:22Hey guys,
00:38:23welcome back.
00:38:23Wake Up Barstool
00:38:24here on FS1.
00:38:26Shout out to everybody
00:38:26joining the Wake Up Barstool
00:38:27movement.
00:38:28Every single Friday
00:38:29we take you to the money corner
00:38:31where our own Megan
00:38:32making money
00:38:33gives you the best plays
00:38:34of the weekend.
00:38:34She has been
00:38:35right hot this season.
00:38:37Let's go,
00:38:37Meg.
00:38:37Let's go,
00:38:38Meg.
00:38:39Money spread.
00:38:40What up,
00:38:41baby?
00:38:41Let's go.
00:38:42We back in the money corner.
00:38:45Four and four last week,
00:38:46week before,
00:38:47five and one.
00:38:48Let's go.
00:38:48So let's see if we can
00:38:50keep some things going.
00:38:51I feel like I had a couple
00:38:52bad beats last week.
00:38:54It was a tough slate
00:38:54last week.
00:38:55First up,
00:38:56I'm going back to the well.
00:38:57I'm going to take
00:38:58the Oklahoma Sooners,
00:39:00minus four and a half.
00:39:01I believe they're at
00:39:01five and a half now,
00:39:02which I still like it at.
00:39:04Ole Miss played well
00:39:05in Athens for three
00:39:06straight quarters
00:39:07and the wheels
00:39:08just kind of fell off.
00:39:09That Georgia run
00:39:10just gashed,
00:39:12just gashed
00:39:13Ole Miss' run defense.
00:39:15Mateer needed a good
00:39:16bounce back.
00:39:16He had it.
00:39:18I'm going to,
00:39:18I think they're back
00:39:18right where they were
00:39:19pre-injury.
00:39:20I like Oklahoma here.
00:39:21It's a crazy line.
00:39:23I mean,
00:39:23this thing is,
00:39:24like Sue pointed out,
00:39:25like,
00:39:25I mean,
00:39:26here you have
00:39:26Ole Miss as the
00:39:27higher-ranked team.
00:39:28They've kind of been
00:39:28thought it was a better
00:39:28team all year,
00:39:29and Oklahoma's now
00:39:30up to five and a half
00:39:31point favorites.
00:39:32I'm with you,
00:39:33Meg.
00:39:33All right,
00:39:34up next,
00:39:35a team I have not
00:39:36yet played this year
00:39:37just because I felt
00:39:38like I was being
00:39:38sold every week
00:39:40by Jake Malisak,
00:39:41but I'm going to go
00:39:42with Virginia,
00:39:43minus the ten and a half.
00:39:45This is just a tale
00:39:45of two teams
00:39:46headed in opposite
00:39:47directions.
00:39:48UNC will not be able
00:39:49to keep pace
00:39:50with Virginia.
00:39:52Not just that,
00:39:52but the Virginia win
00:39:53over Louisville
00:39:54looks even better now
00:39:55as Louisville went
00:39:56down to Miami
00:39:57and took over
00:39:58at the U.
00:39:59Not to mention
00:40:00a little extra
00:40:00narrative here.
00:40:02What coach in their
00:40:03right mind right now
00:40:04wouldn't want to get
00:40:05a win over Bill Belichick?
00:40:06Just think about it.
00:40:08Even if he's in college,
00:40:09you can still say,
00:40:09hey,
00:40:10I got a win over Bill.
00:40:11I beat Bill.
00:40:12That's what Jordan says.
00:40:13I beat Bill.
00:40:14Up next,
00:40:15I wanted to play this
00:40:16last week
00:40:17at 22 and a half.
00:40:18Didn't put it on the card
00:40:19because the card
00:40:20was a little large,
00:40:21but I like SMU.
00:40:22Team total
00:40:23over 28 and a half.
00:40:25They're headed
00:40:25to Wake Forest.
00:40:27They've cleared
00:40:28this number
00:40:28in every game
00:40:29but two this season.
00:40:30The first one
00:40:31was against TCU.
00:40:32They put up 24,
00:40:33which good defense,
00:40:34and then they had
00:40:34a weird one
00:40:35against Missouri State
00:40:36where they won by 28,
00:40:38but I love SMU here.
00:40:40They're continuing
00:40:40to put up a ton of points.
00:40:41What's going on
00:40:42with SMU?
00:40:42I haven't thought
00:40:42about them at all
00:40:43this year.
00:40:45Jennings has just
00:40:45been crazy.
00:40:46The offense
00:40:47has been clicking.
00:40:48Okay.
00:40:49Yeah, man,
00:40:49that's a name
00:40:50I haven't thought
00:40:51of in a long time.
00:40:52Yes, sir.
00:40:53Up next,
00:40:54I should have kept
00:40:54on rolling
00:40:55with the tie
00:40:56last week, baby,
00:40:57but I didn't,
00:40:58but I'm back
00:40:59on them this week.
00:40:59You disgust me.
00:41:00I get it.
00:41:01Hey, money's money.
00:41:02Mine is 11 and a half
00:41:04at South Carolina.
00:41:05They finally
00:41:06have found
00:41:06their footing
00:41:07after they dropped
00:41:08that first one
00:41:09to Florida State.
00:41:10They have just
00:41:11been improving
00:41:11week by week.
00:41:12Todd Simpson
00:41:13looks elite,
00:41:15and if he continues
00:41:16to play the way
00:41:16he's been playing,
00:41:18South Carolina
00:41:18could be in
00:41:20for a very
00:41:20long day there.
00:41:22It's falling apart
00:41:23at South Carolina.
00:41:24It's falling apart.
00:41:24Falling apart.
00:41:25I got a fun one
00:41:26up next.
00:41:27Okay, what do we got?
00:41:28Minnesota, Iowa.
00:41:29You got a spread
00:41:29up to nine and a half,
00:41:31and I think the total
00:41:31is 38 and a half, okay?
00:41:33Don't love a large spread
00:41:34with a low total,
00:41:35but I do think
00:41:36Iowa wins with ease,
00:41:37and in that logic,
00:41:38I think my guy,
00:41:40Grinowski.
00:41:42Yeah, nailed it.
00:41:43Nailed it.
00:41:44Let's go, girl.
00:41:45So he scored a rushing
00:41:46touchdown in every game
00:41:47this season,
00:41:48except in two games,
00:41:50one against Penn State.
00:41:51He scored two rushing
00:41:52touchdowns,
00:41:53and then against
00:41:53Rutgers,
00:41:54he did score three.
00:41:55So two plus touchdowns
00:41:56at plus 320
00:41:58for my guy in Iowa.
00:42:00I like that one.
00:42:01Plus 320, that's so fun.
00:42:02You like that?
00:42:03You see a little extra money
00:42:04and you guys like it?
00:42:05Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:42:05That's fun boy.
00:42:06Up next,
00:42:07my guy Dana's not here.
00:42:08But I'm going to go
00:42:09with his Cincinnati
00:42:10Bearcats at home.
00:42:12Mine is a three and a half.
00:42:14Baylor just got
00:42:14whooped on last week,
00:42:16and guess what?
00:42:16They haven't been covering.
00:42:17One in six ATS,
00:42:19matter of fact.
00:42:20Now they're on the road,
00:42:21as I said,
00:42:21with a red-hot Bearcats team
00:42:23who is tied with BYU
00:42:24atop the Big 12 standings.
00:42:27They can't get caught
00:42:28slipping here.
00:42:29They got Utah,
00:42:30Arizona,
00:42:30and BYU on deck.
00:42:32Give me the Bearcats
00:42:33at home,
00:42:33and shout out Dana,
00:42:34make that field goal.
00:42:35Yes, that's exactly
00:42:36what I was going to ask.
00:42:37Oh yeah,
00:42:37Damon's got a pick.
00:42:38Yeah, he's got a kick.
00:42:3930 yarders.
00:42:40The last one he had,
00:42:41he had an opportunity
00:42:41a couple years ago.
00:42:43Like halftime kick.
00:42:45Wait, we have practice
00:42:45footage of Dana?
00:42:46Okay, while we're here,
00:42:47we might as well dive into this.
00:42:48He's going with a straight boot.
00:42:49This ain't, this ain't,
00:42:50toe bash.
00:42:51That is,
00:42:52I don't like that.
00:42:52I don't have to.
00:42:53It's way better than his first time.
00:42:54Yeah, the first one went
00:42:55on the ground 30 feet.
00:42:57I know,
00:42:57but you got to show
00:42:58a little athleticism though,
00:43:00guys.
00:43:00Looks like he also hasn't
00:43:01taken his two steps
00:43:02to the left.
00:43:02He went three back
00:43:03but didn't go two to the left.
00:43:06He's going like a robot,
00:43:08like a Japanese kicking robot.
00:43:09This is way,
00:43:10if you miss doing it this way,
00:43:11that's way more embarrassing.
00:43:12Absolutely.
00:43:13You look like an athlete
00:43:14and pull it,
00:43:15who cares,
00:43:15but you can't just.
00:43:16Yeah, that's a good point.
00:43:17No, you got to train soccer style.
00:43:18He's going to be in the full
00:43:19Skyline Chili suit.
00:43:21You know,
00:43:21he's going to be ready to go.
00:43:23Him and him.
00:43:23All right,
00:43:23last two real quick.
00:43:25Last two.
00:43:26I'm going to go ahead
00:43:27and roll with the fighting
00:43:29Brandon Walkers.
00:43:30Mississippi State
00:43:30plus the seven
00:43:31at home against Texas.
00:43:33Yes,
00:43:34State did lose last week,
00:43:35but they controlled
00:43:35that game for 60 minutes.
00:43:37Took a little last minute
00:43:38interception for Florida
00:43:40to get the job done.
00:43:41And meanwhile,
00:43:42Texas was lucky
00:43:43to escape Lexington
00:43:44with a win.
00:43:45They were averaging
00:43:453.3 yards per play.
00:43:48Mississippi State
00:43:49has played really well
00:43:50at home.
00:43:50They have enough
00:43:51defensive grit
00:43:51and enough offensive
00:43:52firepower to keep them
00:43:54in this game.
00:43:54If State goes up quickly,
00:43:56I smell a Bevo burger
00:43:57in the making.
00:43:58I agree.
00:43:59There you go.
00:44:00That's the money corner.
00:44:01Megan getting you right
00:44:01for this weekend.
00:44:02We'll post those pics as well.
00:44:04Coming to next,
00:44:04hour number two,
00:44:05and it's time to go
00:44:06into the crawler corner.
00:44:07A lot of corners
00:44:08on today's show.
00:44:09We're going to break down
00:44:10some film with Zach Martin
00:44:11coming up next.
00:44:12Big noon kickoff.
00:44:13Well, that's not coming up.
00:44:14You get what I'm saying.
00:44:15We're going to break down
00:44:16UCLA and Indiana film
00:44:17because that's
00:44:18big noon kickoff.
00:44:19And this is FS1.
00:44:21And that's Chicago
00:44:22on your screen.
00:44:22Tonight,
00:44:33the World Series
00:44:34begins on Fox.
00:44:36As Shohei Ohtani
00:44:37and the reigning champion
00:44:38Dodgers take on
00:44:38Vlad Jr.
00:44:39and the Blue Jays.
00:44:40Game one
00:44:41of the World Series
00:44:42coverage begins
00:44:437 Eastern
00:44:44only on Fox.
00:44:47That was great.
00:44:48That was awesome.
00:44:49That's going to be
00:44:49an awesome game.
00:44:50I'm excited for this
00:44:52World Series.
00:44:52Do we do?
00:44:53Everybody's on Blue Jays,
00:44:54right?
00:44:54I think so.
00:44:55We just don't want to
00:44:56enjoy watching the Dodgers
00:44:57win or play.
00:44:58Play.
00:44:58I think.
00:44:59Yeah.
00:44:59The Dodgers are a weird
00:45:01mixture of like
00:45:03the actual individuals
00:45:05are likable.
00:45:06Yeah.
00:45:06But it's not likable
00:45:08how they've done it.
00:45:09Yeah.
00:45:09Right?
00:45:09I mean,
00:45:10just like outspin
00:45:11everyone,
00:45:11whatever.
00:45:12But,
00:45:12but,
00:45:12but,
00:45:12but,
00:45:13but,
00:45:13well,
00:45:13yes,
00:45:14in a winning sense,
00:45:15but it's worse
00:45:17for the Dodgers
00:45:17because literally
00:45:18they just spent
00:45:18more money.
00:45:19Yeah.
00:45:19Like you have a
00:45:20salary cap in the NFL.
00:45:21Like they just
00:45:22bought their way
00:45:22to this.
00:45:23And then,
00:45:23yeah,
00:45:23the Blue Jays
00:45:24are kind of a little
00:45:25more lovable,
00:45:25but it is weird
00:45:26to cheer for Canada.
00:45:27I know.
00:45:29Over America.
00:45:30You were only on teams
00:45:32that were universally hated.
00:45:34Yeah.
00:45:34Yeah.
00:45:34I was going to bring that up.
00:45:38I wasn't going to say anything.
00:45:39Big Cat said yesterday
00:45:40it was like you played
00:45:40another name in Dallas
00:45:42and I don't feel
00:45:42to be a douchebag.
00:45:46It's,
00:45:46yeah,
00:45:48I think,
00:45:49Meg,
00:45:49you actually,
00:45:50I mean not actually,
00:45:51I don't know why
00:45:51I said it like that.
00:45:52You know more baseball
00:45:52than anybody in this room
00:45:53right now.
00:45:54What's your,
00:45:54what's your,
00:45:56what's your read
00:45:56on the series?
00:45:57I mean,
00:45:59I think as everyone said,
00:46:00like I think the Dodgers
00:46:01have a pretty clear path.
00:46:03Starting pitching
00:46:04just crazy.
00:46:04Yeah.
00:46:05I mean,
00:46:05I would like to see
00:46:06the Blue Jays get it done,
00:46:07but also they're in my division
00:46:09with the Astros,
00:46:10so I don't know,
00:46:11you know.
00:46:12Something that,
00:46:13okay,
00:46:13let me,
00:46:13yeah.
00:46:14Something that Ryan Dempster
00:46:15pointed out that I never knew
00:46:16that has kind of blown my mind
00:46:18is Blue Jays viewership
00:46:20smashes every other,
00:46:23every other MLB team.
00:46:25Why,
00:46:25because they have all of Canada?
00:46:26Yes,
00:46:27apparently all,
00:46:27they average over a million viewers
00:46:29per game,
00:46:30regular season.
00:46:31Wow.
00:46:32Nobody,
00:46:32I would be interested
00:46:33to see if we looked at,
00:46:34if we factored in Japan
00:46:35when it comes to the Dodgers,
00:46:37like maybe,
00:46:37maybe,
00:46:38maybe they would beat them,
00:46:40but,
00:46:41but I know that like,
00:46:42I guess I bring this all up
00:46:43just to say like,
00:46:44man,
00:46:44you know,
00:46:45I'd be happy for the Blue Jays fans.
00:46:47Yeah.
00:46:47The back then for the first time
00:46:48since 93.
00:46:49I would love to see George Springer
00:46:50win a World Series.
00:46:52I love George Springer.
00:46:52Didn't he already win one?
00:46:53Yeah.
00:46:53Well,
00:46:53yes,
00:46:54but,
00:46:54but she's a massive Astros fan.
00:46:57Fair.
00:46:57So she loves George Springer.
00:46:58Oh,
00:46:58when they were cheating and stuff.
00:47:00Yeah,
00:47:00right.
00:47:00Yeah,
00:47:01yeah,
00:47:01yeah,
00:47:01yeah.
00:47:01Every,
00:47:01baseball is a cheater sport.
00:47:02One legit one.
00:47:05Everyone's been cheating for forever.
00:47:07Baseball is a cheater sport.
00:47:08It's if you get caught.
00:47:10Yeah,
00:47:10exactly.
00:47:11All right,
00:47:12so game one tonight,
00:47:13only on Fox,
00:47:14guys again,
00:47:157 Eastern.
00:47:16I think Friday night treat.
00:47:18Speaking of treats,
00:47:19it's time for another edition
00:47:20of Smash or Pass,
00:47:22where our producers
00:47:23have put together
00:47:24a list of foods.
00:47:25I mean,
00:47:26God,
00:47:26what are we talking about,
00:47:28dude?
00:47:28Smash.
00:47:29I would bathe my balls in that.
00:47:30I would bathe my balls in that.
00:47:31Like sourdots?
00:47:32Oh,
00:47:32the most delicious thing
00:47:34I've ever seen?
00:47:34Yeah.
00:47:35You guys gotta start
00:47:36getting more.
00:47:36Okay,
00:47:37okay,
00:47:37so I think the point of this was,
00:47:39I've never made an egg look like that.
00:47:40That's a perfect,
00:47:40I've never made an egg look like that.
00:47:42That is a perfectly poached egg right there.
00:47:44I think what they were kind of
00:47:45wanting to get at is like,
00:47:46yeah,
00:47:46like runny yolk,
00:47:47of course runny yolk.
00:47:48That's farm fresh right there.
00:47:50That's my kid's favorite food
00:47:51is like over easy egg.
00:47:53It's the best.
00:47:54Especially over a skillet.
00:47:55If you make a great biscuits and gravy,
00:47:58you throw an over easy egg
00:47:59on top of that,
00:47:59it's a hot sauce.
00:48:00I just got chills
00:48:00just thinking about food.
00:48:03Oh,
00:48:03what was it?
00:48:04Oh,
00:48:04my grandma,
00:48:05I always thought this was
00:48:06a wonderful bit of like
00:48:07a little Cajun,
00:48:08whatever,
00:48:10she homespun,
00:48:11whatever.
00:48:11Over rice?
00:48:12No,
00:48:12no,
00:48:13she used to call them
00:48:13dipping the bread eggs.
00:48:14Oh,
00:48:15yeah.
00:48:15So I didn't know that
00:48:15because,
00:48:16yeah,
00:48:16that's what my wife
00:48:16called the dipping eggs.
00:48:17Yeah,
00:48:18there you go.
00:48:18They called them dippies.
00:48:20Dippies?
00:48:20Okay,
00:48:21there you go.
00:48:21It's everywhere.
00:48:22All right,
00:48:22smash or pass.
00:48:23What do you got next?
00:48:24Let's see here.
00:48:25Pass.
00:48:26Pass.
00:48:26Licorice.
00:48:27Pass,
00:48:27pass,
00:48:27pass,
00:48:28pass,
00:48:28pass.
00:48:28That looks like a tire.
00:48:31My mom loves black licorice.
00:48:33No.
00:48:34It doesn't look,
00:48:34your mom loves it?
00:48:35Yeah.
00:48:35She still loves it.
00:48:36Apparently a lot of like
00:48:37Midwestern moms like love
00:48:39black licorice or just like
00:48:40Twizzlers in general.
00:48:41Does it taste like red licorice?
00:48:43No,
00:48:43I like the one you peel.
00:48:44Yeah,
00:48:45there you go.
00:48:46Yeah.
00:48:46But that's like a candy
00:48:48from like 1912.
00:48:49Yeah.
00:48:51It just like tastes like
00:48:52plastic a little bit.
00:48:53Like the first bite is like
00:48:54plastic,
00:48:54plastic,
00:48:54and then you get like
00:48:55the black licorice taste,
00:48:57which is almost like
00:48:57a fennel taste.
00:48:59So people,
00:48:59people in,
00:49:00people in the Midwest
00:49:01who just drink in Malort
00:49:03and smash in black licorice.
00:49:04Correct.
00:49:06What?
00:49:08Okay,
00:49:08pass.
00:49:09Wow.
00:49:09Okay.
00:49:09See,
00:49:09there you go,
00:49:10Katie.
00:49:10They found a pass.
00:49:11Yeah,
00:49:11it's true,
00:49:11I guess.
00:49:12You never pass.
00:49:13It's hard.
00:49:14It fits their well.
00:49:15All right,
00:49:16what do we got next?
00:49:16Smash.
00:49:17Smash.
00:49:18Oh,
00:49:18yeah,
00:49:18cotton cheese.
00:49:19Dana brought this up
00:49:20and he tried it
00:49:21for the first time.
00:49:22It's good.
00:49:22A little heirloom tinnata
00:49:23with pepper and salt.
00:49:24Do a little
00:49:25I don't know
00:49:25if I've ever had it.
00:49:26Really?
00:49:27My dad used to crush
00:49:28cottage cheese.
00:49:29It's close.
00:49:29So what you need to do
00:49:30to start yourself
00:49:30on cottage cheese,
00:49:31put a little spoonful
00:49:32in like your scrambled eggs
00:49:33and mix it up.
00:49:35Mix them really fluffy.
00:49:36All right.
00:49:36I mean,
00:49:37I love cheese.
00:49:38Yeah.
00:49:39Nice creamy egg.
00:49:39The crazy thing is
00:49:41like if you're our age,
00:49:42you remember like
00:49:43we grew up
00:49:43and in pop culture
00:49:44cottage cheese
00:49:45was always like a joke.
00:49:46It was shame.
00:49:47Like viewed as being gross
00:49:48and then I tried it
00:49:49for the first time
00:49:49and I was like,
00:49:50what is everybody
00:49:50talking about?
00:49:50They've been lying.
00:49:51People cottage cheese shame
00:49:52and they should grow up.
00:49:53It's like that
00:49:55some roasted
00:49:57with a little balsamic
00:49:58on it.
00:49:59And bacon.
00:50:00And cheddar.
00:50:02Oh God.
00:50:03But yeah,
00:50:03cottage cheese Instagram
00:50:04is putting in everything.
00:50:05Smash.
00:50:05Right now.
00:50:06Smash.
00:50:06What do we got next?
00:50:09Um.
00:50:10Smash.
00:50:11Give me all the goons.
00:50:13Give me all the goons.
00:50:14I mean,
00:50:15call me beer and ly, dude.
00:50:18This is good.
00:50:20Gooned up on a Friday.
00:50:21Yeah.
00:50:22One of my wife's
00:50:22favorite thing
00:50:23at a Chinese restaurant
00:50:24so we always double order
00:50:25the crab right now.
00:50:26It's so good.
00:50:27That and egg rolls, man.
00:50:28I could eat 45 of it.
00:50:30On Father's Day,
00:50:31yeah,
00:50:31my family was out of town
00:50:33and so I treated myself
00:50:34to a solo Chinese
00:50:35sit-down restaurant date.
00:50:36Ooh.
00:50:37And,
00:50:37Joe Flacco on.
00:50:38Oh, yeah.
00:50:39It was incredible.
00:50:41But the fresh goons.
00:50:44I've never had
00:50:45fresh restaurant goons.
00:50:46I haven't had a lot
00:50:46of sit-down Chinese experiences
00:50:48before that, dude.
00:50:49Have you been down
00:50:49to Chinatown yet, guys?
00:50:51No.
00:50:51Uh-uh.
00:50:52Fun fact, too, Bob.
00:50:52There's a great spot.
00:50:53You want to go goon
00:50:54in Chinatown?
00:50:54I would love to take you goon.
00:50:56So,
00:50:56Wonton Don,
00:50:57obviously,
00:50:57he's the wonton expert
00:50:59in the office.
00:51:00We made gumbo goons,
00:51:02which were fantastic.
00:51:03We, like,
00:51:03extracted the,
00:51:04like,
00:51:04the meat
00:51:05from the roux
00:51:06and put it in the goons
00:51:08and then you dipped it
00:51:08in, like,
00:51:09the gumbo,
00:51:09like,
00:51:10and then we made ones
00:51:12that are, like,
00:51:12the crawfish pistolets
00:51:14at Jazz Fest.
00:51:15We made, like,
00:51:16the stuffing
00:51:16and put it in the wontons.
00:51:17I love a pistolet.
00:51:18They were so good.
00:51:18Where was I that day?
00:51:20I don't know.
00:51:20Everyone loved them.
00:51:22Yeah.
00:51:23I bet.
00:51:24It sounds amazing.
00:51:25Megan,
00:51:25also from Louisiana,
00:51:26incredible cook.
00:51:27Megan makes a
00:51:28fantastic gumbo.
00:51:30And it is officially
00:51:31gumbo season.
00:51:31It is.
00:51:32I made a jambalaya
00:51:33a couple nights ago.
00:51:34I'm making some
00:51:34for you next Tuesday.
00:51:35That is the cuisine
00:51:36that I was never
00:51:37introduced when I was little,
00:51:38but after living down
00:51:40in Dallas,
00:51:41and so on,
00:51:42that is,
00:51:43Cajun food
00:51:43is one of my favorites.
00:51:44It's the best.
00:51:45I still haven't really
00:51:46been introduced to it.
00:51:47You're going to love this,
00:51:48you're going to love
00:51:48this gumbo on Tuesday,
00:51:49but I'm about to get,
00:51:50you're about to get,
00:51:51and I've been talking
00:51:52to Megan about some tips
00:51:53to try to increase mine,
00:51:54like,
00:51:54how to handle,
00:51:55like,
00:51:55the sausage and everything,
00:51:56and, yeah,
00:51:57we're about to,
00:51:58about to do it right.
00:51:59You've got to order it
00:52:00from down south.
00:52:01The andouille up here
00:52:02just doesn't,
00:52:02it doesn't work.
00:52:04I know,
00:52:04I think I'm going to
00:52:05have to get some
00:52:05local andouille.
00:52:06We'll see, though.
00:52:06We'll see.
00:52:07Send it up.
00:52:07If anybody has
00:52:08any local andouille,
00:52:09hit us up.
00:52:10You got a place?
00:52:11I got a butcher shop.
00:52:12I mean, yeah,
00:52:13Chicago's the meat,
00:52:14meat capital of the world.
00:52:15We don't know sausage?
00:52:16Come on.
00:52:19All right,
00:52:19so what's the next
00:52:20smash or pass here, guys?
00:52:23Yes.
00:52:24Come on, man!
00:52:25Now,
00:52:26this is insulting.
00:52:26How many of these
00:52:27could you do in a sitting?
00:52:28This is insulting.
00:52:29How many in a sitting?
00:52:31Maybe triple digits?
00:52:32I mean,
00:52:32if that plate comes out
00:52:33around,
00:52:34it's going directly
00:52:35back into the kitchen.
00:52:35Yes!
00:52:36A thousand percent.
00:52:37Yeah.
00:52:39This is number one
00:52:42probably most food
00:52:43that I have
00:52:44self-control problems with
00:52:45if there's a plate.
00:52:46Like you said,
00:52:47I think it's actually
00:52:48number one in the world
00:52:49for me.
00:52:49I just have to keep
00:52:50eating them.
00:52:51It's like they come over
00:52:51the plate of hors d'oeuvres
00:52:52and you just grab
00:52:52the whole plate.
00:52:57What's the,
00:52:58what do you all
00:52:59dip your pigs
00:52:59in a blanket in?
00:53:00Ketchup.
00:53:01Ketchup.
00:53:01Ketchup, right?
00:53:02Okay.
00:53:02I didn't know
00:53:03if I was going
00:53:03to be ashamed for that.
00:53:04I have a good,
00:53:05kind of,
00:53:06you know,
00:53:07the plate story,
00:53:08you know,
00:53:08when they go,
00:53:09like your...
00:53:10Hors d'oeuvres?
00:53:10Yeah, yeah.
00:53:12What's that
00:53:12for food again?
00:53:13So we were at,
00:53:14it was actually here
00:53:15in Chicago,
00:53:16we were at
00:53:17Jack McCarthy's pool
00:53:18and they were doing
00:53:20some event
00:53:21and their hors d'oeuvres
00:53:22guy were coming around.
00:53:24We actually paid,
00:53:25I actually paid him
00:53:2520 bucks
00:53:26to just come to us
00:53:27first every single time.
00:53:29That's a great move.
00:53:30So he would come to us
00:53:31every time,
00:53:31we'd have first pick
00:53:32at whatever
00:53:33and then we'd usually
00:53:33just send him
00:53:34right back.
00:53:36The dude's like,
00:53:37sorry man,
00:53:38that pie is bitter.
00:53:39Oh man,
00:53:40okay,
00:53:42let's,
00:53:43okay,
00:53:43what about this?
00:53:44If you're at a wedding,
00:53:46that was at a pool party
00:53:47sometime,
00:53:47right?
00:53:48Pool parties pretty
00:53:49aggressive to eat
00:53:49that many hors d'oeuvres,
00:53:50right?
00:53:51I normally want to say
00:53:51light in my face.
00:53:52You were crushing.
00:53:54If you're at a wedding,
00:53:56what do you do
00:53:57when,
00:53:57or how many hors d'oeuvres
00:53:59are you eating?
00:53:59What are you doing
00:54:00with it when you're done?
00:54:01That's what I never,
00:54:02I end up with like
00:54:0318 napkins
00:54:04in my back pocket
00:54:05all the time.
00:54:05Almost never.
00:54:06I feel like there's
00:54:07a high spill ratio,
00:54:08you're looking good,
00:54:09you're in your suit,
00:54:10I'm always just like,
00:54:10just keep the cocktails
00:54:11coming,
00:54:12I'll catch you at dinner.
00:54:13I'm with you,
00:54:14I don't like eating
00:54:15at weddings at all,
00:54:16I gotta stay light
00:54:16on my feet for the dance floor.
00:54:18To be fair.
00:54:18You're saying the hors d'oeuvres
00:54:18are better than the main course.
00:54:20Yes,
00:54:20that is fair.
00:54:21I kind of hammered it.
00:54:22But I feel like it's also
00:54:22how close you are
00:54:23with the people
00:54:24that are getting married
00:54:25as well.
00:54:25Like you're not,
00:54:26if you go to a wedding
00:54:27like as a plus one,
00:54:28you're not gonna be
00:54:29hammering hors d'oeuvres,
00:54:30you know,
00:54:30because you don't want to...
00:54:31I kind of think the opposite.
00:54:32I'm like,
00:54:32I'm never gonna see you
00:54:33at all again.
00:54:33That's your time to shine.
00:54:35You don't know anybody.
00:54:36I'm not a big wedding guy yet,
00:54:38so I haven't...
00:54:39Oh, that's right,
00:54:39you haven't gone through.
00:54:41Yeah.
00:54:41I'm only 24.
00:54:43I feel like in the South,
00:54:44though,
00:54:44we don't have as many
00:54:45sit-down weddings.
00:54:46No, they do buffets.
00:54:48Yeah, it's more like
00:54:48buffet style.
00:54:49Yeah, you feed your own pace.
00:54:50Yeah, we do tacos
00:54:50at our wedding.
00:54:52Yeah, you feed at your own pace.
00:54:53You graze,
00:54:54the dance floor starts,
00:54:55I wait...
00:54:56Live bands.
00:54:57Yeah, I don't need anything,
00:54:58and then I wait until
00:54:59you're hammered
00:55:01and they're shutting it down
00:55:02and they have the leftover
00:55:03buffet food
00:55:04and they're just giving you trays.
00:55:06Or the new thing.
00:55:06And that's when we finally eat.
00:55:07The new thing for weddings
00:55:08is the late night snacks.
00:55:10Late night pizzas,
00:55:11sliders.
00:55:12Yeah.
00:55:12Oh, really?
00:55:13Yeah, they call that.
00:55:13They put it into the schedule.
00:55:15When the music ends,
00:55:16on your way out,
00:55:17we'll have...
00:55:17Oh, hell yeah.
00:55:19There's also people
00:55:20that get Waffle House
00:55:21trucks to come
00:55:22and Cane's trucks
00:55:24to cater.
00:55:25They'll have a whole
00:55:26outside venue
00:55:27that's different
00:55:28from the inside
00:55:29so that people can
00:55:29have late night meals
00:55:30and cool stuff like that.
00:55:31That's definitely
00:55:31new wedding stuff.
00:55:32Have you ever seen
00:55:34the Macaulay Culkin
00:55:35Richie Rich movie?
00:55:36Yeah.
00:55:37Yeah.
00:55:37Remember?
00:55:37Yeah.
00:55:38In the McDonald's
00:55:39basement, dude?
00:55:40I used to always dream
00:55:41about having
00:55:41a Waffle House
00:55:42in my basement.
00:55:43That was...
00:55:44How do you know
00:55:45you made it?
00:55:46Waffle House.
00:55:46Yeah, exactly.
00:55:47Well, now I've kind of realized
00:55:49it's just a cast iron grill.
00:55:52I don't need the...
00:55:54I got a black zone.
00:55:55I have it.
00:55:55I accomplished my dreams.
00:55:56I mean, the ambiance can't be beat.
00:55:57That's true.
00:55:58No, that's true.
00:55:59I need some old, like,
00:56:00the smell of old cigarettes.
00:56:02Yeah.
00:56:03The tension that a fight
00:56:04might break out.
00:56:05Someone just hammered
00:56:06and passed out
00:56:07in the booth behind you.
00:56:08What, uh...
00:56:09Okay, what's our
00:56:09final couple smash
00:56:10or pass here?
00:56:11Let's see.
00:56:12What do you got?
00:56:13Uh, clam chowder?
00:56:14Smash.
00:56:14Smash.
00:56:15I'm passing.
00:56:16Whoa!
00:56:17Yeah.
00:56:18Well, no, we got offended.
00:56:19I...
00:56:20What?
00:56:20What is wrong with you?
00:56:21I'm not a big clam girl.
00:56:23I also don't like
00:56:24oysters, like, stew or chowder.
00:56:26I'm not...
00:56:26I don't like the way that, like...
00:56:28It's cooked, though.
00:56:29I know, but I don't like
00:56:29the way that cooked ones, like,
00:56:31taste in, like...
00:56:32It's, like, too rubbery.
00:56:33I'll eat raw oysters
00:56:34and, like, all day long, but...
00:56:36Do you like charbroiled oysters?
00:56:37Yeah.
00:56:37I just don't, like...
00:56:38But you still have a little bit, like...
00:56:40Do they feel, like, rubbery or something?
00:56:41Yeah, maybe...
00:56:42Or in a clam chowder...
00:56:43The taste is good,
00:56:44but the texture is not for me.
00:56:46That's fair.
00:56:46I think I understand what you're saying.
00:56:48In a clam chowder, though,
00:56:48is that...
00:56:49Potatoes?
00:56:50Boiled?
00:56:50No, I'm saying, are the clams...
00:56:53I guess I need to boil
00:56:54or steam, technically.
00:56:55Yeah, they're just cooking the pot.
00:56:57Yeah.
00:56:57Yeah.
00:56:58Yeah.
00:56:58But, I mean, that would maybe
00:56:59lend itself to maybe a bit
00:57:01of the texture.
00:57:01Yeah.
00:57:02Disconnect that Megan's having here.
00:57:02You gotta go low and slow.
00:57:04Maybe we just gotta get you
00:57:05the right clam chowder.
00:57:05Maybe.
00:57:06Yeah.
00:57:06I just, yeah, I don't like
00:57:10to each their own.
00:57:11More for us.
00:57:14Clam?
00:57:15The New England clam chowder,
00:57:16100%.
00:57:16The Manhattan clam chowder,
00:57:17I'm not a fan.
00:57:18Agreed.
00:57:18Agreed.
00:57:19Yeah, the challenge for production
00:57:20next week on Smasher Pass, guys,
00:57:22is you gotta understand,
00:57:23you're dealing with really fat guys.
00:57:25Why don't you bring in all of them?
00:57:26That's what I was gonna say.
00:57:27The challenge for next week,
00:57:28bring it in,
00:57:29we'll do a live review.
00:57:30Everything you put on Smasher Pass,
00:57:31bring it in,
00:57:32like hors d'oeuvres,
00:57:33and we'll eat them.
00:57:34Oh, man, that sounds so good right now.
00:57:36Smasher Pass.
00:57:37All right, next,
00:57:39here on Wake Up Barstool,
00:57:41we put out the fat signal yesterday
00:57:43asking for questions
00:57:45for the big boys,
00:57:46and many of you responded.
00:57:49We'll get to the best ones next.
00:57:50We also have our skill
00:57:51and special parlay
00:57:52coming up at the end of the show,
00:57:54so don't go anywhere
00:57:56more Wake Up Barstool
00:57:57here on FS1.
00:58:00What's up, guys?
00:58:00Welcome back to Wake Up Barstool
00:58:01here on FS1.
00:58:02As we said,
00:58:04we put out the fat signal.
00:58:05We asked you for questions
00:58:06from the big boys
00:58:07for the big boys.
00:58:08Also,
00:58:09you all should check out
00:58:10the big boys club.
00:58:11If you want to join the BBC,
00:58:12we just dropped merch yesterday.
00:58:15Great shirts.
00:58:16Mikey,
00:58:16Dana,
00:58:17Ella,
00:58:17brand new podcast.
00:58:18It is incredibly stupid.
00:58:21And Ella.
00:58:21But it's so,
00:58:22it's very relatable.
00:58:23It's very fun.
00:58:24It's very fun.
00:58:25My poor mother,
00:58:26I had a whole soliloquy
00:58:26about my love of grinding,
00:58:29and I woke up this morning,
00:58:30and I looked at my Instagram DMs,
00:58:33and it was a broken heart emoji.
00:58:34And then it said,
00:58:36your mother and your grandmother
00:58:38see this.
00:58:39And I was just like,
00:58:40oh, mom.
00:58:41I don't know.
00:58:42Mom,
00:58:42I know you want to.
00:58:43I love you.
00:58:43I'm very sorry.
00:58:44We can talk about it later.
00:58:45Love you, mom.
00:58:45I don't want to have to block you.
00:58:47I don't know.
00:58:47We'll figure it out.
00:58:47Way to say it twice.
00:58:50We'll figure it out.
00:58:51We'll figure it out.
00:58:52All right.
00:58:53Let's get our first question out.
00:58:54We don't know what these questions are,
00:58:55so we will be reacting
00:58:56to these live.
00:58:58Okay,
00:58:58this is from our very own Ken Jack.
00:59:03Would it be better
00:59:04to have elite tackles
00:59:06and bad interior offensive linemen
00:59:08or elite interior offensive linemen
00:59:11and bad tackles?
00:59:12Why don't we start with you?
00:59:13We got to go with you.
00:59:14This is a good question.
00:59:15This is a really good question.
00:59:16Ken Jack's fired up
00:59:17because he just said that.
00:59:18Good question, Ken Jack.
00:59:19I would say
00:59:20it's better to have,
00:59:23you want to have strength inside
00:59:24so the quarterback can step up.
00:59:26A lot of quarterbacks will say,
00:59:27hey, tackles, run them by.
00:59:29I can step up
00:59:30and I can miss.
00:59:31So I think interior offensive line,
00:59:33you want to be stout there
00:59:34because the quarterbacks,
00:59:35you get a guy
00:59:36running up in their face.
00:59:37Wow.
00:59:37Don't you get more help, though,
00:59:39on the interior?
00:59:41You definitely have more help.
00:59:42That's not what I'm saying,
00:59:43but you got more space
00:59:43to tackle to kind of
00:59:44to push them by.
00:59:45The quarterback can feel the rush,
00:59:47step up,
00:59:48run out the lane.
00:59:48I actually thought
00:59:49you were going to see the offense.
00:59:49And the way that falls apart
00:59:51is like, yeah,
00:59:52if you can't step up,
00:59:54then it tackles.
00:59:55Everything's harder.
00:59:56The quarterback can't see.
00:59:57Anything.
00:59:58Like with Drew Brees,
00:59:59he had to have better
01:00:00interior offensive linemen
01:00:01than tackles.
01:00:02Otherwise, he'd be blinded.
01:00:05I do.
01:00:05I do.
01:00:06But I feel like
01:00:07in nowadays,
01:00:09the elite rushers
01:00:10are the edge rushers.
01:00:12Yeah, always.
01:00:12Yeah, for sure.
01:00:13So I mean,
01:00:13if you have a Micah Parsons,
01:00:15you know,
01:00:15going up against a bad tackle,
01:00:18that's kind of just,
01:00:18I don't know.
01:00:19I do agree.
01:00:20But I also,
01:00:21if you look at it,
01:00:22a lot of teams,
01:00:24like there's,
01:00:24you know,
01:00:24Miles Garrett,
01:00:25mostly he's going to stay there
01:00:26in the end.
01:00:27But a lot of these teams,
01:00:28like when we had Micah in Dallas,
01:00:29he's coming inside on third night.
01:00:30That's so hard.
01:00:31You know what I mean?
01:00:32That's true.
01:00:32Yeah, put him on the three tag.
01:00:33Oh, yeah.
01:00:34Find your slide,
01:00:36try to get a 5-0 call,
01:00:37get everyone manned up,
01:00:37go inside,
01:00:38and the worst athlete.
01:00:39Dude,
01:00:40that is terrifying
01:00:41to be a guard
01:00:43and then suddenly
01:00:44have Micah Parsons
01:00:45lined up over here.
01:00:46Yeah,
01:00:46more teams are doing it.
01:00:47All these ends,
01:00:48I remember my first year,
01:00:49we were playing New York
01:00:50and JPP was like roll.
01:00:52Yeah.
01:00:52It was like Tyron,
01:00:53Tyron was going against JPP,
01:00:55it was the big matchup all week
01:00:56and then like the first third down,
01:00:57he was lined up on me.
01:00:57I'm like,
01:00:58whoa, whoa, whoa.
01:00:59Dude,
01:00:59the old man,
01:01:00the old man.
01:01:01The media isn't highlighting
01:01:03our bad job.
01:01:05That was a great question
01:01:06and some incredible insight
01:01:07from Zagher
01:01:08because I agree,
01:01:08I thought it'd be the opposite.
01:01:10All right,
01:01:10what do we got next, guys?
01:01:11Next question here.
01:01:11This comes from Matt Hudak.
01:01:15What's the one nasty trick
01:01:16you use in the trenches
01:01:17that the ref never catches
01:01:18but the defender feels
01:01:20for the next three plays?
01:01:21Oh,
01:01:21I like that question.
01:01:23I think
01:01:23they were talking,
01:01:25Matt was talking about
01:01:26how on screenplays,
01:01:28you know,
01:01:28the club.
01:01:29Yeah.
01:01:29He was talking about that
01:01:30and like how
01:01:31sometimes you get them
01:01:32on the head
01:01:32a little bit of the neck
01:01:33and the refs,
01:01:35I think in college,
01:01:36they've been,
01:01:37what's the word,
01:01:39cracking down on it more
01:01:40like you can't just
01:01:41absolutely club them
01:01:42but I feel like
01:01:44you've had your first year.
01:01:45I would say the jumpers,
01:01:46right?
01:01:47You get these D tackles,
01:01:48D linemen that jump up.
01:01:49Oh,
01:01:49and you just baptize them.
01:01:51You get a little shot on them.
01:01:51You can hold down them.
01:01:52You get a little shot
01:01:52in their sternum,
01:01:54go out for a few plays
01:01:55so anytime you see a jumper,
01:01:56it's like a freshman
01:01:57or like a naked.
01:01:58Yeah.
01:01:59It's like,
01:02:00it's the best play
01:02:00for Robbins Lyman.
01:02:01Oh,
01:02:01then you can sprint out.
01:02:02You got nothing yet.
01:02:03You got no responsibility.
01:02:04I don't care what anyone else
01:02:05is doing.
01:02:05I'm going to tattoo this guy.
01:02:07I used to love
01:02:08just kind of being
01:02:10generally dirty,
01:02:11right?
01:02:12Getting as many
01:02:13kind of diving on guys
01:02:15at the end,
01:02:15getting up off the...
01:02:16Under piles?
01:02:17Yeah.
01:02:18Yeah,
01:02:18yeah,
01:02:18getting in shots
01:02:19under piles.
01:02:20When the guys
01:02:21who can do it well,
01:02:22it's like part of their game.
01:02:23Like Ryan Jensen.
01:02:24You guys remember Ryan Jensen?
01:02:25Yes.
01:02:25He was the center
01:02:26for the Bucs.
01:02:26Yep.
01:02:27Like so much of his game
01:02:28was just messing with guys
01:02:29the entire game.
01:02:30You know,
01:02:30giving them an extra shove,
01:02:31get them on the ground,
01:02:32give them a forearm
01:02:33and it gets guys
01:02:34out of their game.
01:02:34So some guys use it
01:02:35as part of how they play.
01:02:37We used to do a competition
01:02:38where if you got,
01:02:40you know,
01:02:41if it got on the TV camera
01:02:42without getting a penalty,
01:02:44you got a point.
01:02:44Yeah.
01:02:45That's not bad.
01:02:46Also,
01:02:46like we saw earlier
01:02:47where you do it on the TV.
01:02:48Bounty gate all over again.
01:02:49Where you're holding
01:02:52and you see the in
01:02:53coming around,
01:02:54you're just going to go
01:02:54head in.
01:02:56All right.
01:02:56What do we got next?
01:02:58This comes from Sean McNeely.
01:03:01What percentage of sacks
01:03:02are the QB's fault,
01:03:03whether it be
01:03:03the wrong protection call,
01:03:04holding the ball,
01:03:05or running into a sack?
01:03:07I mean, it's...
01:03:08I mean...
01:03:08It's a lot of coverage, too.
01:03:10Yeah.
01:03:10Yeah, it's hard to give
01:03:11like a strict answer.
01:03:12Yeah, I think it's pretty...
01:03:13When it's on the O-line,
01:03:14it's pretty straightforward,
01:03:15but there also...
01:03:16I said this yesterday.
01:03:16We were talking about this
01:03:17kind of exact question.
01:03:18And there is more times
01:03:20that I think people
01:03:21don't realize
01:03:21that it's breaking down
01:03:23in the route concepts, right?
01:03:25Like maybe someone
01:03:26runs the wrong route or that.
01:03:27So that's also
01:03:28where the quarterback's
01:03:29got to hold onto the ball
01:03:30and then he gets sacked.
01:03:31So it's really...
01:03:32Protection is all 11 guys, right?
01:03:34Yeah.
01:03:34The receiver's got to
01:03:35get into their routes,
01:03:36break out of their routes fast
01:03:37because the ball's got to
01:03:38come out on time.
01:03:38So sacks, really...
01:03:40Unless you're getting beat
01:03:41right away,
01:03:41and that's obvious
01:03:42when you're watching the game,
01:03:43that's on the right guard.
01:03:43That's the O-line.
01:03:44But when it's a sack
01:03:47three, four, five seconds,
01:03:48it's everyone
01:03:49working together.
01:03:50Well, and it's like
01:03:51you talk about the Cowboys
01:03:52earlier.
01:03:52Like you lose Parsons,
01:03:53you lose pass rush.
01:03:54Like, knock on...
01:03:55It's a symbiotic relationship
01:03:57between coverage
01:03:57and pass rush, right?
01:03:59Everything speeds up.
01:04:00So when you lose one,
01:04:00you lose the other.
01:04:01It's 11-on-11.
01:04:02What do we got next?
01:04:04Oh, swept the wrong rate.
01:04:06Gino.
01:04:06Our own Gino.
01:04:08Shout out to all the Gino heads.
01:04:09Gino had a birthday this week.
01:04:10How many calories
01:04:11were we looking to consume
01:04:13on average?
01:04:14Did it differ from
01:04:14preseason game day
01:04:15slash bye week?
01:04:16Interested?
01:04:17No difference per team
01:04:18slash coach.
01:04:19What were we going to do?
01:04:20Meals, snacks,
01:04:21and whatnot
01:04:22to keep weight on.
01:04:23Yeah, because you've already
01:04:24lost all the weight.
01:04:25I love eating, dude.
01:04:27You want to take this one?
01:04:28No, we can split it up.
01:04:30We can split it up,
01:04:31but I feel like
01:04:33in season,
01:04:34you can eat so much more.
01:04:35Yeah.
01:04:35And it's...
01:04:36You can eat...
01:04:37Because I'm losing,
01:04:37you know,
01:04:38eight pounds of practice.
01:04:39Yeah.
01:04:39Especially early in the season.
01:04:41So, I mean,
01:04:42I'm eating everything
01:04:43under the sun, dude.
01:04:45Like, I'm talking
01:04:46two burritos
01:04:47from Chipotle
01:04:48or something like...
01:04:48Things like that.
01:04:50But I just love eating, dude.
01:04:51It's the best.
01:04:52Now, do they tell you
01:04:53what to eat?
01:04:54How big were each
01:04:55three of you guys
01:04:56at your largest size?
01:04:57Oh, right here.
01:04:58Oh, God.
01:04:58No, I was 335 freshman year.
01:05:01335.
01:05:01It was at the bowl game, dude.
01:05:03Fat ass.
01:05:04We were eating everything.
01:05:05What about you, T?
01:05:06You were pretty big.
01:05:07322 is the biggest
01:05:08I've ever seen.
01:05:09322.
01:05:10The most I ever weighed in on...
01:05:11Like 260.
01:05:12Oh, wow.
01:05:12I was trying to bulk up
01:05:14for guard
01:05:14and I got up to 318.
01:05:16But like 300
01:05:17was probably my ideal.
01:05:18310 was my...
01:05:19It was horrible weight, too.
01:05:20I was disgusted.
01:05:22And then I kind of
01:05:23leaned out a little bit,
01:05:24but...
01:05:24That's how I was.
01:05:25I feel like there's a lot
01:05:25of shakes you can make.
01:05:27Wait, so here's what I'm going
01:05:28to ask you because
01:05:28when you're in the NFL
01:05:30for as long as you were,
01:05:31that's when your body
01:05:32just becomes almost
01:05:33like a science,
01:05:34I feel like.
01:05:34Yeah.
01:05:34Like in college, yeah.
01:05:35You know, we just eat
01:05:36like anything we wanted,
01:05:37whatever.
01:05:38So how did that kind of evolve?
01:05:39Oh, I agree with Kadic here.
01:05:42Off season,
01:05:43like I was on it
01:05:44because if I wasn't,
01:05:45I'd start gaining some weight
01:05:46and you got a lot more time
01:05:48and you're training
01:05:50with the team
01:05:51in the morning,
01:05:51you're running
01:05:52and all that.
01:05:52Once the season starts,
01:05:54it's like get as much food
01:05:55as you can use as possible.
01:05:56Hell yeah.
01:05:56You're just losing weight.
01:05:57You're losing so much weight.
01:05:58You're lifting,
01:05:59you're running,
01:05:59you're practicing,
01:06:00you're just on your feet
01:06:01all day,
01:06:02so you're constantly
01:06:02burning calories.
01:06:03So season,
01:06:04it was almost like
01:06:05a free-for-all, honestly.
01:06:06Just like get calories in it
01:06:08so I didn't drop weight
01:06:09because I dropped 10 pounds
01:06:10in three weeks.
01:06:12Was it ever a chore?
01:06:13Oh, yeah, absolutely.
01:06:14I know a lot of guys
01:06:15that for like a little hack
01:06:17is they drink olive oil.
01:06:19What?
01:06:20So many calories.
01:06:21Yeah, or like drizzle it
01:06:22over like every meal.
01:06:23Some guys would just
01:06:24take shots of olive oil
01:06:26to just like get calories in
01:06:27and like before weigh-ins
01:06:29or something like that,
01:06:30they would just do that
01:06:31and it just sits.
01:06:32All right, let's see
01:06:33if I can do this.
01:06:33All right, next question.
01:06:34Dang it.
01:06:34I'm missing again.
01:06:35All right.
01:06:36This comes from James,
01:06:38James Geep.
01:06:39When is it clear
01:06:40you are overmatched
01:06:41early in a game?
01:06:43How bad is having to play out
01:06:45the course of a game?
01:06:48I, it's a...
01:06:49It's a, it's a, it's a...
01:06:51That's a nine-time life pro.
01:06:53Something like Aaron,
01:06:54someone like Aaron Donald.
01:06:55Yeah, well like, okay,
01:06:56for example,
01:06:57we're going,
01:06:57we're playing the Rams,
01:06:58Aaron Donald.
01:07:00All week,
01:07:00we're not blocking
01:07:01this guy one-on-one.
01:07:02I don't care who you are.
01:07:03We're not putting one guy.
01:07:03We're not being stupid.
01:07:04Let's put two on.
01:07:05So there's definitely
01:07:06an aspect of like
01:07:07up at the line
01:07:08and you get the slide
01:07:08and you're like,
01:07:09hey, you know,
01:07:09hey, come on.
01:07:10Like 99, 99,
01:07:1199's over here, you know?
01:07:13So there definitely
01:07:14is some of that
01:07:15when you're playing
01:07:16an elite guy.
01:07:17Yeah.
01:07:17If you're out there
01:07:18and you have a rough
01:07:20start to the game,
01:07:21I mean, I guess
01:07:21just on the sideline,
01:07:22hey, like center,
01:07:23hey, I may need
01:07:24a little body pressure
01:07:25when you're sliding left.
01:07:26I need a little chicken wing.
01:07:28What about when like
01:07:28your team is overmatched?
01:07:30Because I mean,
01:07:31individually, yeah,
01:07:32you gotta, I mean,
01:07:33yeah, like what like...
01:07:34It sucks.
01:07:35Yeah.
01:07:36It's like,
01:07:37you can prepare so much
01:07:38and we were prepared
01:07:39for everything
01:07:40Ohio State did,
01:07:40but it came down
01:07:41to just the crowd noise,
01:07:43everything,
01:07:44them timing the snap.
01:07:45I'm getting off,
01:07:46I'm off, you know,
01:07:47balance and people,
01:07:49it just comes down
01:07:50to how can you execute
01:07:51on the field
01:07:52and we and I
01:07:53didn't last year.
01:07:53Was Donald the best
01:07:55that you,
01:07:55the best that you ever played?
01:07:56I usually like take him out
01:07:58when people ask me that
01:07:58because...
01:07:59Really?
01:08:00That's how much
01:08:00like a gap it was?
01:08:01Yeah, yeah.
01:08:02The boogeyman.
01:08:03The boogeyman.
01:08:04Bro, that's scary.
01:08:05I got goosebumps.
01:08:05The boogeyman.
01:08:06That's crazy.
01:08:06That's like the one guy
01:08:07where we would play them.
01:08:08The boogeyman is such a great one.
01:08:09I would, like that's the guy
01:08:10that's keeping you up at night.
01:08:11So who would be the next guy
01:08:13if there was,
01:08:13I mean, obviously...
01:08:14Fletcher Cox was like my...
01:08:16Okay.
01:08:16I think we played
01:08:16against each other
01:08:1720 times in my career.
01:08:18What?
01:08:18Yeah, because we played
01:08:19twice a year.
01:08:19He's a rival.
01:08:20Yeah.
01:08:20So that was like my rival,
01:08:22Fletcher Cox,
01:08:22and he had a stint there
01:08:24where if you take Donald
01:08:25out of it,
01:08:25I thought he was
01:08:26kind of as good as it gets.
01:08:27What about like
01:08:28working at a TFL
01:08:29against me
01:08:30when he was a sophomore
01:08:31and I was a senior
01:08:31and I was like,
01:08:32who is this guy?
01:08:33What about like
01:08:33Vince Wilford?
01:08:34Someone like that.
01:08:35Yeah, I think I played
01:08:36him a lot.
01:08:37Those body types
01:08:38I feel like are more
01:08:39rare nowadays.
01:08:39Yeah, no.
01:08:40Definitely.
01:08:40Do you have a Wilford?
01:08:41Sue is definitely...
01:08:43Peter Vea maybe?
01:08:44Puts your hands on your...
01:08:45Billings on the Bears
01:08:46is a big load.
01:08:47Yeah.
01:08:47That's fair.
01:08:48Yeah, Peter Vea.
01:08:49No gloves.
01:08:50No.
01:08:50Psycho.
01:08:50Yeah, crazy man.
01:08:51Psycho.
01:08:52You know that guy
01:08:53started off.
01:08:54All right, next question.
01:08:55There you go.
01:08:58What block do y'all prefer?
01:08:59A pulling block
01:09:00where you get to smash
01:09:01the edge
01:09:01or a double team
01:09:02down block
01:09:03to the linebacker?
01:09:04I loved pulling
01:09:05on power, dude,
01:09:06and leading up
01:09:07on the mic.
01:09:07Yeah, not counter.
01:09:08I didn't like counters.
01:09:09Oh, a little skip pull.
01:09:10Did y'all do skip pulls
01:09:11or did you open up?
01:09:12No, no.
01:09:12We're big open ups.
01:09:13Really?
01:09:14See, we were talking
01:09:15about this the other day, dude.
01:09:16My first O-line coach
01:09:17was always skip pull.
01:09:18Coach Bostak came in
01:09:19and was always open.
01:09:21So why did you prefer
01:09:22open over...
01:09:23I don't think I've ever
01:09:25skip pulled like in a game.
01:09:26I guess my only downfall
01:09:28would be when you're
01:09:28coming back
01:09:29just being like high
01:09:30in the hole.
01:09:30Yeah.
01:09:31So when you're pulling down
01:09:32and you're coming around
01:09:32and you're coming around.
01:09:32Okay, yeah, that's a good point.
01:09:34We should show...
01:09:34So like a skip pull
01:09:35is where you're going
01:09:37to do this
01:09:37and you're going
01:09:38to stay square
01:09:38to the line.
01:09:39It's pretty much...
01:09:39I think...
01:09:40And then opening up
01:09:41you're in here.
01:09:42I'll be the edge.
01:09:43I think with counter
01:09:44there should be nothing...
01:09:46No, counter you open up.
01:09:47You're open.
01:09:47But I think power...
01:09:49It's both ways.
01:09:50Like Zach said,
01:09:51you're very high
01:09:52when you're skipping
01:09:53but you're also staying square
01:09:55to get tight in the hole.
01:09:57I don't know.
01:09:57It's...
01:09:58It's very much a preference
01:09:59thing for line coaches.
01:10:00I never played
01:10:01for a line coach
01:10:01that liked to skip pull
01:10:02so we didn't do a lot of it.
01:10:05I just always kind of
01:10:06felt like a running back.
01:10:07You watch the hole
01:10:09open up
01:10:09and then you kind of hit it.
01:10:10I think nothing for me
01:10:12beats a hip-to-hip
01:10:13double team
01:10:14right to a linebacker
01:10:16and you're just moving
01:10:17this guy against as well.
01:10:18Yeah.
01:10:18That is...
01:10:19Especially a linebacker
01:10:20that's like plussed over
01:10:21so I'm like...
01:10:22I'm working a combination
01:10:23with the center here
01:10:24and we're working
01:10:25with a linebacker over there.
01:10:26I literally have to
01:10:27take a drop step
01:10:27and I am just sprinting
01:10:29at this guy.
01:10:30You're giving one boom
01:10:31and then you're going.
01:10:32Just right through his hip?
01:10:33Yeah.
01:10:34The second guy.
01:10:34So you got your guy
01:10:35that's posting him up
01:10:36and I want to be
01:10:36the second guy
01:10:37just flying in there.
01:10:38Oh, yeah.
01:10:38God, that's the best.
01:10:39All right.
01:10:40Next question.
01:10:43How long...
01:10:44This comes from
01:10:45Joel the Human Giraffe.
01:10:47How long does it take
01:10:49an offensive line
01:10:50to officially gel
01:10:51as a unit
01:10:52and how do you factor
01:10:53injuries into that
01:10:55a la heavy depth
01:10:56ready to go?
01:10:57Yeah, it's tough
01:10:58especially when we're
01:10:58talking college football
01:10:59with the transfer portal
01:11:01and all new guys
01:11:02coming in.
01:11:03I mean,
01:11:03offensive line play
01:11:04is very unique
01:11:05as we know, right?
01:11:06It takes five guys
01:11:07on every play
01:11:08to do their job
01:11:08so when you don't get
01:11:10those reps next to guys
01:11:11it is difficult.
01:11:12It takes a little bit
01:11:12of time
01:11:13but when you play
01:11:15next to the same guy
01:11:16for a long time
01:11:17there's a comfort level
01:11:18that comes out.
01:11:19I play next to
01:11:19Terrence Steele
01:11:20or right tackle
01:11:20in Dallas right now
01:11:21for the last five seasons
01:11:22and there is
01:11:23versus the first
01:11:24couple years
01:11:25we were playing
01:11:25against or
01:11:26with each other
01:11:27versus the last few
01:11:28it's a huge difference
01:11:29that comfort level
01:11:29I know how he steps
01:11:30I know he's going
01:11:31to fit into the block
01:11:32I know how he sets
01:11:34I know how he likes
01:11:35me to set on someone
01:11:36so there's a lot
01:11:38of that that comes
01:11:38with just repetition.
01:11:39Could you all
01:11:40have almost played
01:11:40a game without
01:11:41talking by the end?
01:11:42Yeah, for sure.
01:11:43Like just like
01:11:43yeah, you're just
01:11:44locked in.
01:11:45So I had two
01:11:46left tackles
01:11:47that I played with
01:11:48when I was playing guard
01:11:49Luke Haggard
01:11:50who plays for the Bucs
01:11:51and then Carter
01:11:52who's still
01:11:52with Indiana
01:11:53but like you said
01:11:54we could go
01:11:55we could have gone
01:11:56a whole game
01:11:56without
01:11:57like we didn't even
01:11:57need to switch call
01:11:58like we were passing
01:11:59off twists
01:11:59because we're just
01:12:00so in tune
01:12:01with each other
01:12:02and we don't even
01:12:03have to say
01:12:03like combination calls
01:12:05because we just
01:12:05know what we're doing
01:12:06but it is
01:12:07there isn't a big
01:12:08adjustment period
01:12:09from like Luke
01:12:10to Carter now
01:12:10like there was
01:12:11a huge adjustment
01:12:12that I had to make
01:12:13just on steps
01:12:14and your rhythm
01:12:15with each other
01:12:16and like the gel
01:12:17and I think
01:12:18a lot of it
01:12:18this may be
01:12:19like but it comes
01:12:20like off the field
01:12:21as well
01:12:22that I will say
01:12:22because like the camaraderie
01:12:24and the chemistry
01:12:24that you have
01:12:25on the field
01:12:26it's just a byproduct
01:12:27of what you're doing
01:12:28well yeah
01:12:28and so we talked
01:12:29about with Kate
01:12:29earlier
01:12:30I mean it's funny
01:12:31that strong side
01:12:31quick side thing
01:12:32almost makes it
01:12:33even more intimate
01:12:34in a way
01:12:34because that's your
01:12:35that's your lover
01:12:36you're traveling
01:12:37constantly
01:12:38like if I'm having
01:12:3920 beers
01:12:39with my left tackle
01:12:40that's fantastic
01:12:50okay last question
01:12:51here this comes
01:12:51from Gnarly Charlie
01:12:52great name Gnarly
01:12:53what part of the body
01:12:54hurts the most
01:12:55after a full game
01:12:56head hands
01:12:56on body legs
01:12:57fingers
01:12:58dude
01:12:59finger
01:13:00okay
01:13:00I was about to say
01:13:01so I got a bad ankle
01:13:02so my ankle would hurt
01:13:02my fingertips
01:13:04yes
01:13:05really
01:13:05dude my fingertips
01:13:06after a game
01:13:07the next morning
01:13:07would be so tender
01:13:09I don't know
01:13:09it's because I had
01:13:10you know I'd tape
01:13:10my finger under my glove
01:13:11and then I'd tape
01:13:12it on top of my glove
01:13:12and then you're just
01:13:13so everything's so tight
01:13:15and then you're
01:13:15punching people all day
01:13:16but my fingertips
01:13:18the next day
01:13:19would you
01:13:20would you
01:13:20would you tape
01:13:21fingers together
01:13:21or just the individual
01:13:22so I'd individual
01:13:23it under the glove
01:13:24and then on top
01:13:25of the glove
01:13:25I would buddy
01:13:26yeah
01:13:26when I play
01:13:27I'll do that
01:13:29but playing center
01:13:30I didn't wear a glove
01:13:31so I mean
01:13:32my fingernail
01:13:33hangnails
01:13:34everything's falling off
01:13:35the next day
01:13:36your knuckles
01:13:36are all
01:13:37fingers for me
01:13:38it's like not even close
01:13:39especially if you don't
01:13:40get rolled up
01:13:40or have an injury
01:13:41during the game
01:13:41yeah
01:13:42yeah finger
01:13:42hands fingers
01:13:43I feel like you also
01:13:45use your fingers so much
01:13:46like you don't realize
01:13:47they hurt
01:13:47until you go to like
01:13:48type or like whatever
01:13:50and then you're like
01:13:50what happened
01:13:50I don't think I was
01:13:51good enough with my hands
01:13:52because I didn't have a lot of fingers
01:13:55wrists are another
01:13:58wrists
01:13:58yeah

01:18:25prized jersey
01:18:27would be
01:18:27from an opponent

01:18:51it was right
01:18:51it was right before
01:18:52he retired the year
