00:02Go for it.

00:03What I enjoy the most about The Amateur is that

00:06he has a solid plot

00:08but he's also very much a character study.

00:10You can feel for Sara

00:12and you definitely root for Heller's journey.

00:16So how do you work with the director and the screenwriters

00:18in order to mix these two sides of the movie?

00:22Well,

00:24you find an incredibly thoughtful, intelligent,

00:29meticulous director in James Hall

00:31I think explored the genre so well in Slow Horses

00:36and he just brings a level of authenticity

00:42that he wants to incorporate

00:44that I also really wanted to make sure we nailed

00:50in every aspect of what he was going through emotionally,

00:54what we could pull off using his resourcefulness

00:58as a human being

01:00really create a dynamic between Rachel and I,

01:05Sarah and Charlie that felt real

01:08because they're a magnetic couple

01:12and an unexpected couple

01:14and as human beings I think we're all of it unexpected

01:21and that's what makes it all relatable.

01:24I was kind of our North Star is to make this feel real and authentic

01:30because so many of the films of this genre

01:33they can be overly entertaining

01:39and pretty embellished perhaps

01:44not that ours isn't overly entertaining

01:47let's put that on record

01:48it's very entertaining

01:49overly entertaining

01:50some might say

01:52you had just a few scenes in order to build a whole character like Sarah

01:59was everything in the screenplay?

02:02did you use the novel?

02:03how did you shape your character?

02:05together

02:06I'd read this beautiful script

02:08had a chance to talk to James Halls

02:11our wonderful director

02:12and then got to spend some time chatting with Rami about it

02:16both what Rami needed as an actor from this relationship

02:21and this character

02:22and also how they had talked about the impact of this relationship

02:26what you needed to set up with very little real estate

02:29to land the emotional impact of the film and his journey

02:33and we got to mess around and try on a lot of things for size

02:38and it was a real

02:40it's always a gift to be able to work with a director like James too

02:43who has such a clear vision

02:44he has such control over his set

02:47in a very quiet and calm and collected way

02:50and somehow still made space for us to try things

02:53even though there was a lot to accomplish in very little time

02:56and so we got to give him a lot to work with in the edit

03:00and trust that he would shape it and that you guys would shape it together
