00:00Congratulations for the movie. It was terrifying, for me at least.
00:04And what was the main inspiration for the story?
00:09It was, the first seed of inspiration was our friend's little sister, who is non-sighted.
00:15And she was wanting to catch the bus for the first time.
00:18And her family and her parents were really, really scared of letting her do it.
00:23But she really wanted to learn how to be independent and learn how to navigate the world on her own.
00:28And that conversation and that argument was very interesting to me, because I could see both sides of the argument.
00:34And she's not how you would think a non-sighted person would be.
00:38Like, she was just really, really strong and independent.
00:41And she would fight with her brother and wrestle with her brother.
00:43And that dynamic was so interesting to me.
00:45So that was definitely one of the big inspiration points for Bring Her Back.
00:50Okay. And visually, Bring Her Back has a very elegant and specific look, very distinctive.
00:58How did you construct the film's visual identity?
01:01And did you have any references or inspiration for this aspect?
01:07It's always those collaborations with your heads of departments and having everybody be on the same page.
01:14And our costume designer and our production designer, everyone was feeding into each other
01:19and making sure that the look was all in sync.
01:21And a really big thing for us with the costume and even with the house is that Laura is a dying leaf.
01:28And she goes from these oranges to these browns.
01:31And you see her costume change as the film progresses.
01:34And there's even a moment where she's in this bathroom and she's, like, opening up to a character about what she's going through.
01:40And she's standing between life and death.
01:43And so, like, half of the wall behind her is green and the other one are these browns.
01:47And it's, like, always trying to find ways to tell a story through the design and look of the film as well.
01:53Yeah, it's funny.
01:54And with the DOP, like, cinematically, the visual language, how you express point of view.
02:00So there was each character has something, you know, a little bit different with them.
02:04And so with Oliver, there's the zoom shots, the lenses, he's focusing in on his prey almost.
02:12And, like, shooting him from the back of his head where it feels like he's seeing his own body outside of his body,
02:16like, trying to find a way to convey that.
02:17And then also, say, Piper, it was a lens created specifically for her as well, what her point of view is.
02:26So it's, you know, super close-ups.
02:28Yeah, super close-ups.
02:29Amplified sound and stuff.
02:30So it's just working with amazing artists and creating a style, which is, that's the fun stuff in movies.
02:38Yeah, it's very, very precise, very distinctive.
02:41If you see one shot of Bring Her Back, you know that it's Bring Her Back.
02:46You can't practice.
02:48Yeah.
02:49And let's talk about Sally Hawkins because she's an incredible actress, very talented.
02:56But she has a wide range in this movie.
02:59How did you work with her?
03:01It was, she's such a giving performer.
03:04And, like, it was all about, like, creating these really in-depth backstories and acting out moments that weren't even in the film,
03:11but, like, give characters a sense of history and make them feel real, make the world feel lived in.
03:16She would even go to, you know, go shopping as the character and dress the set as the character.
03:21And it was such a really, really in-depth process of her that was amazing, beautiful, and then even, like, analyzing every single line of the script.
03:30And she would even make suggestions of things that we could change, stuff that would heighten different elements.
03:35She's the best.
03:36So it's a thing that we like doing in rehearsal process and in pre is creating the world outside of the film.
03:43So the film starts at a specific point in time, but what has happened in this character's life that's led up to that moment?
03:50So it's, like, working with her on her character's entire history, you know, from birth up until this moment.
03:56So it gives it this lived experience.
03:58Like, that's the cool stuff to do with it, especially with performers like Sally, who's so open to that kind of stuff.
