00:00U.S. President Donald Trump says India has agreed to cut back on its purchases of Russian oil
00:05as Washington seeks to pressure Moscow and push for an end to the war in Ukraine.
00:12Speaking at the White House, Trump said he and Indian Prime Minister Nandar Modi
00:16had a very good relationship and that India was reducing its Russian crude imports
00:22following a phone call between the two on Tuesday.
00:25We stand great and the people of India, I love the people of India.
00:29And we're working on some great deals between our countries.
00:33I spoke to Prime Minister Modi today, as I mentioned before, and we just have a very good relationship.
00:40And he's not going to buy much oil from Russia. He wants to see that war end as much as I do.
00:46Modi confirmed the call in a post on X thanking Trump for his warm greetings,
00:51but made no mention of Russian oil or energy policy.
00:54India's foreign ministry also declined to comment, similar to his response last week
01:00when Trump first made the claim about Modi's pledge.
01:03The Trump administration has previously imposed tariffs of up to 50% on Indian goods,
01:10including a 25% penalty specifically linked to Russian oil purchases.
01:15However, Trump's recent comments struck a more conciliatory tone.
01:19According to India's Mint newspaper, the two countries are negotiating a trade deal
01:24that could cut U.S. tariffs on Indian exports to around 15% to 16% from the current 50%.
01:32The agreement is expected to be formally announced at the upcoming ASEAN summit.
