U.S. President Donald Trump says Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has pledged to reduce oil purchases from Russia, as the two leaders discuss trade and regional stability. Trump credits trade diplomacy for averting conflict between India and Pakistan, and praises Modi as a “great friend” committed to ending the Russia-Ukraine war.

00:00U.S. President Donald Trump said he spoke with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday with their conversation focused largely on trade.

00:08Trump added that energy was also part of the discussion, saying Modi assured him that India would be limiting its oil purchases from Russia.

00:17India and China are the two top buyers of Russian seaborne crude exports.

00:23The people gathered on behalf of all Americans. Let me also extend our warmest wishes to the people of India.

00:31I just spoke to your prime minister today. We had a great conversation.

00:35We talked about trade. We talked about a lot of things, but mostly the world of trade. He's very interested in that.

00:42Although we did talk a little while ago about let's have no wars with Pakistan.

00:47And I think the fact that trade was involved, I was able to talk about that.

00:52And we have no war with Pakistan and India. And that was a very, very good thing.

00:57But he's a great, he's a great person. And he's become a great friend of mine over the years.

01:40So they've cut it way back and they're continuing to cut it way back.
