Unusually warm weather hitting parts of the country in October, 2025.
Transcript
00:00Damaging winds and the potential for thunderstorms will impact large parts of southeastern Australia today.
00:05In fact, the wind has already started to crank up across parts of the far south.
00:11Here's a look at the radar from last night through until this morning,
00:15showing fairly extensive areas of at least patchy rain, if not a little more solidly filled in than that,
00:20through South Australia, moving eastwards into Vic, parts of southern New South Wales and Tasmania.
00:25We actually did see around about 50mm in the South Australian mountains, mostly falling yesterday and then overnight last night.
00:32About 20mm through western parts of Victoria, so a healthy drop of rain there.
00:36It's been about 15mm through central areas and as we can see now, late Wednesday morning,
00:42a lot of the rain is actually starting to focus in on Tasmania and that will pick up the bulk of the remaining wet weather.
00:48Although this little band here which stretches through central Victoria and up into inland New South Wales,
00:53that could certainly kick off a few thunderstorms and we'll look at that thunderstorm risk shortly.
00:58I also want to focus in on the wind across the south because the wind will be one of the major players for the rest of the day today.
01:05Here's some of the wind gusts we've seen this morning.
01:07Robe down here on the southeast Australian coastline, 94km an hour.
01:11Warrnambool on the Victoria coastline, 94.
01:14Casterton a bit further inland, 80km an hour.
01:16These wind gusts have been ramping up through the course of the morning and it really does look like the afternoon will bring the strongest winds across parts of Victoria.
01:25This low pressure area near the coastline is the main culprit for these winds.
01:29You can see how those arrows really race around the low pressure area.
01:32So as that low slides eastwards in the coming hours, those strong winds will spread eastwards as well and impact other parts of Victoria.
01:39In fact, we can see exactly that if we add in the rain as well.
01:43Watch this low track through the Bass Strait.
01:45We'll see those strong winds impact other parts of Victoria, maybe parts of New South Wales as well.
01:49And then tonight, overnight, it's really pulling out into the Tasman Sea and conditions are settling down quite significantly over the country.
01:57By sunrise tomorrow morning, it will feel like a different day out there compared to the windy one on Wednesday.
02:03Just a real focus in on the winds, just to show which areas could perhaps get the strongest winds.
02:08And they are places close in the vicinity of this low pressure area.
02:11So it's the southwestern coast of Victoria.
02:14It's the southern coast of South Australia.
02:16As this low moves into the Bass Strait, we'll see the winds move through central parts and then we'll be easing off.
02:21And look, it's only 9 o'clock tonight.
02:23The last of those strong winds in the southeastern corner, early tomorrow morning, the last of those winds are easing.
02:29Here's the warning that we've got in place across the south of the state.
02:32Damaging winds expected through pretty large areas.
02:34Over the next few hours, the winds are still going in South Australia, but they'll be easing off this afternoon.
02:40Victoria and southern parts of New South Wales, it's most of the day today.
02:44Those strong winds will gradually ease back in western places this afternoon.
02:48This evening or overnight, the winds will clear out of these other areas.
02:52Right through this region, we could see gusts of 90 to 100 kilometres an hour.
02:55But on this stretch of coast here, where those winds could be even stronger, maybe 120 to 125 kilometres an hour.
03:02That is wind strong enough to bring down branches and trees, make it difficult to drive on the roads, cause power outages, and potentially even damage cars or property.
03:12Here's a look at the thunderstorm map for today.
03:15The thunderstorm risk, at least.
03:16And we do see a risk of thunderstorms with those bands of wet weather sliding across the south, but also through much of eastern and northern New South Wales, and even across into Queensland.
03:26Most of these storms won't bring much rainfall.
03:29Generally quite low rainfall totals are expected, but what these storms could bring is enhanced wind gusts.
03:35So it's already going to be a very windy day, particularly down in the south here, if you get storms overhead, a little bit of rain, but expect those winds to pick up even further, and could bring further potential for damage.
03:47When it comes to overall rainfall, I said Tasmania's picking up the lion's share, and that is definitely true.
03:52We could see 30 to 50 millimetres across parts of Tasmania between now and early Thursday morning.
03:58Across mainland Australia, probably just another 10 to 15 millimetres to go before the rain clears up tomorrow.
04:04Tasmania has had a lot of wet weather in recent months, so if we do see 30 to 50 millimetres, that could be enough to cause some of those river levels to rise.
04:13And there is a flood watch in place for the majority of Tasmania.
04:16As river catchment areas receive rain today, the levels could rise, and some rivers may see flooding.
04:23So if you live on or near riverways in Tasmania, do keep an eye on those flood warnings over the next 24 to 48 hours, as we see how they respond to today's rainfall.
