00:00whether you're an experienced cruiser wow absolutely stunning there's a ship a first
00:07time seafarer oh my goodness look at this or keen to make a splash
00:15there's one thing we brits are all on board with we love cruising
00:23british demand for cruises is higher than ever i found my sea legs just about i was
00:29born with sea legs okay there's romantic locations and this is just beautiful
00:36breathtaking views bellissimo exciting activities i'm with my friend chilling and treats and tipples
00:45galore this is the life this is the life with surprises you're kidding me have i spelled this
00:51wrong and new adventures around every corner it's odds on oh wow we saw the dolphins it was
00:59amazing our fun-loving brits at sea will love the cruise
01:12ambience is ambassador's first lady of the sea she travels at a cruising speed of 15 knots
01:19islands visiting 45 countries across four continents
01:27and this 1400 passenger ship is going to be home to our two pairs of intrepid travelers
01:32for the next week but before the adventures begin let's meet this week's guests
01:41first up it's civil partners james and damian i'm james i'm damian we're civil servants from asics
01:48and we've been together 20 years this is our first time on a cruise ship we've sailed many times on the
01:54isle of white ferries and across the channel but that doesn't count so i'm kind of a little bit
01:59apprehensive about what to expect when we get on the ship we've literally packed broadly ventralities
02:04whether it's going to be cold whether it's going to be warm um and i've got a gang of dogs here
02:09actually who wants to go with us ayah is actually sitting in my suitcase she wants to come with me
02:15our main passion in life is our dogs so we've got six cocker spaniels which we travel up and down the
02:21country showing they'll be leaving their brood with friends to try the kind of holiday they've long
02:28wished for we haven't really got away since 2018 but we're looking forward to not having the dogs
02:35and just pampering ourselves and i think the the plan is to try and do as many new things as possible
02:42and it's going to be a holiday of literally doing as many first things as we can
02:47also heading for the high seas for the first time a mom and daughter duo jackie and tamara from london
02:56we've been to so many places done so many things it does help that we live together so
03:00we're kind of totally in tune with each other but it also helps that we share a lot of interest
03:06so that just makes it more interesting until now these regular travel buddies have always flown to their
03:12holiday destination but no need to worry about that today ladies so mom's going over the travel
03:19documents for the cruise she's looking at luggage tags and the embarkation are you excited i don't think
03:30i considered myself a cruise person it's the pickup it's the pickup
03:35jackie's being pictures for me it was always about the flight the adrenaline the being in the air
03:43is it big this is a big case i don't think i considered myself a cruise person either to be
03:48fair what did you pack clothes for every bench money i'm a frequent flyer so to me you fly it's so quick
03:59you get to your hotel you do what you need to do but with jackie approaching retirement more leisurely
04:06holiday at sea might be just the ticket i hope that my mom gets a chance to relax to slow down to
04:16enjoy the sea because she really does love the sea now she's in wind down mode she needs to learn how
04:22to wind down well your ship sails this evening and the voyage of discovery will begin
04:31departing from tilbury in london the ship will sail onwards to amsterdam
04:36where our holiday makers start their adventures
04:40they will sail down the atlantic coast to portugal stopping off at the vibrant coastal city of lisbon
04:47before heading further south to the sunny med and the exotic british overseas territory of gibraltar
04:58but before all that the ship is now docked at its first stop the dutch capital of amsterdam
05:06famous for its laid-back charm characterful canals and quirky architecture
05:11amsterdam grew from a small fishing village into a center of trade and finance once the river amstel
05:18was dammed to control flooding in the 13th century
05:23it's now a top city break destination offering a host of cultural and culinary experiences
05:31first to venture off the ship and soak up all this unique cosmopolitan city has to offer
05:36are james and damien we're in a major city aren't we but like when we're in london it's so busy
05:42and i don't feel like that here now i mean everything we want to see today is actually
05:47within walking distance it's very accessible it's very compact it is
05:53i just can't get over the number of bikes it's unreal
05:59so we arrived in amsterdam and we thought to ourselves what's the best way
06:03is seeing amsterdam and we looked around and we could see bikes and we could see canals and we
06:09thought we'll go on the canal didn't fancy the back in the stairs and what better way to start
06:15their adventures on water than going from a big ship to well a much smaller one
06:20good morning how are you guys going today yeah yeah very well thank you how are you wonderful
06:27thank you um so my name is steph i'm going to welcome you guys aboard today nice to meet you
06:31i'm james lovely to meet you lovely to meet you lovely to meet you i can help you guys on board if
06:34you like thank you very much thank you no worries thank you hiya morning
06:42their small boat trip taking in the city's canals starts on the amstel river
06:46it's lovely to see the city from this angle isn't it you'll notice even with the cars and
06:55everything it's very quiet and peaceful on the water you know i'm feeling a bit relaxed yeah
06:59obviously we've got busy jobs and lifestyles and things and we breed and show dogs as well so it
07:05takes up a lot of time absolutely and it's just no time for ourselves we have no day oh you guys need
07:10this then yes well you just take it all in guys and relax whilst james and damian are enjoying the
07:18sights on their little ship tour jackie and tamara are getting acquainted with their new home for the
07:24week we've got a gentleman playing the piano here he is i don't know if you can see him there jackie
07:30will be making many entrances here on the evening in her nice ball gown looking lovely on a scale of one
07:3710. how happy are you 10. 12. she's 12. come on girls show us your room that's the next one right
07:481148 this is high let's do this okay so this is our room here's the bed there's jackie
07:58a cruise ship it's like a floating hotel because you wake up somewhere every day in a new location
08:08and then here's our bathroom area
08:12and our luggage was waiting for us we didn't have to drag it anywhere that's good for all your clothes
08:19i was happy with the amount of hangers we had i've never been somewhere where we've had excess
08:23hangers listen we bought oh one and done oh my goodness well done you if i could achieve one
08:30thing on the cruise i'd hope to achieve to see if it's like a way of life that i could adapt a
08:35different kind of holiday that i would enjoy not only with mum maybe i'll round up all the
08:41all the young hot girls that are my friends and we'll go cruising the seven seas together
08:45shall we cheers to darling cheers to our first crew yep
09:05this week our two pairs of first-time cruisers are kicking off their maiden voyage in the dutch capital
09:11amsterdam and while jackie and daughter tamara spent their morning enjoying the ship cheers once
09:18again cheers honey james and damian have gone exploring the city this is just so beautiful and
09:25peaceful starting with a canal tour so coming up here on the left-hand side we have a very famous view
09:32of amsterdam so these are called the dancing houses so when we get opposite them you'll see they're very
09:38wonky they're going all over the place another name for them is the drunken friends might be a
09:43little bit more appropriate yeah so you'll see this um a lot throughout amsterdam little crooked
09:48buildings it's because um amsterdam was actually built on wooden poles to support the buildings
09:53because it was all marshland there's a lovely church there what's that one oh this is the million
09:58euro view what's that uh so claude monet used to live in one of these houses you're joking yeah i know
10:03and his view of his window looked directly down that canal oh and he painted that view and the
10:08paintings sold for a million can we just go back so i can take some pictures and sell them
10:16not sure they'll fetch a million james so what did you think of the million euro view i thought it
10:21was really nice i've you know we i just really enjoyed absolutely everything on that that canal and
10:27just to see some of the sites that you wouldn't normally see do you know damien this is just a
10:36lovely way i'm glad we've done this it's a nice way to see amsterdam it gave us an opportunity i
10:42suppose to explore the city without all the stress yes and to see it from a really nice kind of low
10:48perspective yes i thought it was a nice way easing us into what to expect on the cruise i think
10:53oh as james and damien are finding their sea legs on the canal it's to the start of a wonderful
11:00holiday cheers to start a nice holiday with several hours till the ship sets sail onto its next
11:08destination lisbon are you excited very excited jackie and tamara are heading off port side for their
11:16own dutch adventure jackie's in the clog welcome to amsterdam the netherlands sells over three million
11:26pairs of wooden shoes every year and it's also the second largest exporter of cheese in the world
11:33mum and daughter are going to a place that houses both 20 kilometers north of the port in the picturesque
11:40fishing village of wollendam traditional artisans still make clogs by hand and produce a range of
11:47local cheeses all giving a flavor of old amsterdam look at the clog it's really nice yes and the
11:56tulips yeah it was very cute very quaint they have like a little windmill display outside which was very
12:03nice and then the real action was on the inside jackie and tamara will be putting their carpentry
12:11skills to the test but first the cheese beckons oh interesting it is the room smells are very cheesy
12:21well it is a shop selling all the locally made cheeses and there's plenty to tickle the taste buds
12:26wow is this a stroopwafel cheese i wonder what that tastes like oh so what's that fenugreek that's
12:36tomato and olive oh whiskey oh now that is interesting what is this pickle there was a lot of cheese in
12:45the cheese room is this rosemary yes it is rosemary oh a lot of interesting flavors i i never knew there
12:53was a port flavored cheese stroopwafel cheese oh truffle that's i do love some truffle cheese i'm not
13:02gonna lie nettle cheese yeah nettle i'm like gouda this is some gouda cheese
13:11oh very gouda it's actually the most popular cheese in the netherlands and it's most famous
13:17all this makes you hungry fortunately there's plenty to try we went on to do cheese tasting yes
13:26cheese tasting with very interesting flavorness hey hello hi would you like to try stroopwaf it's
13:35a cookie cheese yes a little bit okay yes and it's it's a nice difference because you're not used to
13:41something sweet oh that's sweet it's very interesting wow that's sweet that's yeah holland
13:52as a whole i think is known for stroopwafels i've never had a sweet cheese before no i mean we usually
14:00have cheese on our pasta pizza but never a sweet cheese hmm it's very interesting very nice though
14:09yeah kind of sweet like this is like a caramel cheese we'll leave jackie and tamara to carry
14:16on challenging their taste spots meanwhile back on the canals so do you know what we noticed when we
14:23first arrived in amsterdam yeah there is hundreds of bikes so many try millions it's a school day for
14:31james and damien with guide steph yeah there's about 1.3 million bikes in amsterdam yeah and the
14:37population is only about 950 000 so bikes actually outnumber people there's more bikes than there is
14:42there is yeah and apparently they fish 15 000 out of the canals every year do you know sometimes i
14:51can't believe how many house spots there are bet steph knows how many there's so many but actually
14:57it's limited to 2 500 for the entirety of amsterdam oh my god you know that as well yeah i do i'm gonna
15:02start writing these down i'm sure steph has more so how many bridges are there in amsterdam
15:08so amsterdam actually has 1281 bridges you're kidding oh nope that's more than venice i'm going to be
15:14philly facts i hope they've got a quiz on board because i tell you i'm ready for it let's see what
15:19you remember i'm sure steph said something something about that 1380 bridges or something like that
15:26i was taking in everything steph was saying i had a couple of glasses of champagne and i completely
15:31forgot about it i completely forgot the numbers might be looking too good for the quiz but i think
15:36we're ticking chill time i think this has got to be the best way to see i'm just relaxing with a glass of
15:42champagne i think i just felt a huge weight lifting off my shoulders and as i started to relax wondered when
15:51the holiday was going to kick in and it was as soon as we were on that boat i just immediately felt
15:59relaxed comfortable yeah and relaxed and really looking forward and i thought i really hope the
16:04rest of the cruise and the holiday is going to be like this thanks very much all right and i can give
16:08you a hand thank you oh a stumble off at the cheese farm jackie and tamara are also getting a taste of
16:18dutch delight i have another one you probably don't have at home jalapeno smoked cheese that's me
16:24oh that's you she's not good with spice oh no no i will do the tasting for the both of us oh and it's
16:32smoked oh wow we definitely were eating out her stock bless her but it was very enjoyable i would have
16:40to say my favorite cheese maybe the jalapeno cheese that little oh yes to it oh yeah no that's
16:45spicy you don't want it no no no if it's hot i i don't want that it had a little to it so it was
16:51it was quite nice mum doesn't like anything too spicy no so we left that one in the showroom
16:56unfortunately another one it's smoked goat cheese wow there we go oh thank you if you like smoke and if
17:04you like yeah that's a good cheese this is my favorite really mm-hmm that's really good whoa
17:12i like this it's really creamy i don't think i've ever had smoked goat's cheese mom has found a new
17:19favorite yes it's the smoked goat's cheese is my absolute favorite thank you so much thank you
17:25welcome thank you for visiting thank you having feasted on local cheese jackie and tamara are moving
17:33next door to explore something else that's quintessentially dutch oh look at the clog wall
17:40whoa whoa you see these these are a bit oh this is cute a little pink one the only clog that i know is a croc
17:51and it's a wooden shoe or it's a shoe a wooden shoe that people wear on their feet i don't know why
17:58they wear clogs wait have you seen this oh my goodness look at this one it's uh donald sorry i
18:06couldn't resist wow i've never actually figured out why it's a fashion choice i imagine it's steeped
18:13in history though well you're in the right place to find out clogs or wooden shoes date back to the
18:21early 13th century in the netherlands known as klompen in dutch factory workers artisans and laborers
18:29clomped around in these noisy but sturdy safety shoes at work they're now a national symbol and still
18:35worn in some rural areas today and there is one clog expert that will be able to help tamara and jackie
18:43find out all about them ladies welcome to the world of wooden shoes my name is marco and today i'm
18:52going to teach you how to make a wooden shoe oh we've been making wooden shoes in the netherlands for
19:01more than 1 000 years with old tools like you see them here and i am actually one out of 25 wooden
19:09shoe makers who still makes them by hand so today you are going to make your own wooden shoes but
19:15before you are going to start you have to put on the right clothing that's a big bag for two pairs
19:22of overalls okay wow thank you thank you see you when you dress for the job then
19:29something else the netherlands is famous for is its iconic blue and white delft pottery
19:40made here since the 1500s it's enormously popular with tourists and it's inspired the
19:46boys to have a go themselves at crafting their own souvenirs to bring home to their beloved pups
19:51so that's two of the spaniels sorted so what i was thinking was i was thinking of having a
20:21band of solid color around and then just paint on um the name and maybe a little paw print or
20:29something on either side so cute you came with a plan i did come with a plan two of our dogs they
20:35don't have dog balls no so phoenix and aurora yeah because they're the pups but the new babies in the
20:40family yeah i was thought you're thinking about trying to do something to remember my trip
20:44mm-hmm no no no your tulips or something i'm keeping i'm keeping this tulips is very cute
20:51yeah don't listen to him and are you going to judge them at the end no no there's no no no you
20:56need to because obviously when we breed and show dogs we're very competitive so you need to tell
21:01us that mine is obviously the best yeah we'll see with the pottery we were really competitive
21:07weren't we yes and that reflects uh how we really are in our everyday life as well
21:12so i could do dark green band there and then possibly chill yeah tulips yeah i've got to be
21:18able to do a tulip yeah i'm sure this nice lady can teach you how to yeah that's cheating if you're
21:25getting help i think i'm just going to come up with a plan and then take it from there and no helping him
21:31because then this is this is a competition yeah everything's a competition this is a competition
21:37all right shall we start shall we start let the throwdown commence
21:54it's the first day on land for the cruise and with the ship docked in amsterdam
21:59our holiday makers have got the day to explore the sites before setting sail tonight
22:04tomorrow and jackie have been exploring the ship we've got a gentleman playing the piano
22:13here he is i don't know if you can see him there before taking off for a cheesy nibble or two
22:19that's sweet it's very interesting and james and damien started their day with a mini cruise along the
22:26canals so these are called the dancing houses before getting crafty for their canine friends
22:34now at the clog factory oh jackie and tamara have gone dutch ready for work so ladies the best way to cut
22:42is to start at the end of this block of wood start gently cutting put it firmly on the working bench
22:51and then gently start cutting into the block of food
22:54i feel good i think the outfit helps because it makes you feel as though you're a genuine shoemaker
23:07clogs start their life as a block of popular wood the shape is then carved using a guillotine cutter
23:14before a hole is scooped out for the foot nowadays machines help speed up the process
23:20so marco bless him gave us a block of wood and wanted us to um carve it into a
23:28clogged shoe a wooden shoe oh my goodness my shoulders
23:33it requires strong shoulders and iron determination i don't think they're going to make a
23:38uh a wooden shoemaker out of me yeah the longer the piece of wool tissue cut off the better the
23:46result will be oh look no i'm getting the hang now this is like peeling sugar cane
23:53it's very hard it's not something easy to do it was very labor intensive
23:58more put your back into it i'm putting my back into it and your shoulder into it i'm putting
24:03everything i have into it yeah okay i don't see how this is going to become a wooden shoe
24:12i think i've shaved more than you you know uh my pile of wood is bigger so i i don't think i don't
24:17think so i think mine's look more in keeping tomorrow you go on like that you're going to end up with a
24:24toothpick back in central amsterdam james and damien are working like dogs for well they're dogs do you
24:36want to tell me a bit more about your doggies yeah of course so we got into breeding cocker spaniels
24:42about 12 years ago we've currently got six dogs so we've got isla then we've got freya then we've got
24:50artemis and then we've got rocket yeah and then aurora and phoenix and phoenix so the aurora and
24:58phoenix are the two babies they're only seven months old it all started when they inherited just
25:04one cocker spaniel fudge when james's father passed away so we done the most sensible thing ever we sold
25:12our flat we bought a house and everything just so we could bring fudge to live with us and we saw an
25:18advert for a dog show so we thought oh we'll go along we'll have a look and then yeah got a little
25:24bit um that turned into two dogs it turned into three dogs it turned into six dogs now six we've um
25:31we've just had two pups so they've not got balls yet so this is why we wanted balls so he's doing one
25:38for phoenix and this is one for aurora do you guys make time to be creative together we live such
25:50really busy lives unfortunately this is why it's nice to get away on this crew so we can spend some
25:56time together and we connect and we never do anything like this do we know we think this is
26:01the first time you've ever tried anything artistic and it's nice just to do something a little bit
26:05creative it was quite therapeutic to sit there and talk to a stranger and you know we'd never do
26:11that at home we'd never paint we'd never do crafts or things and it was just nice to do that yeah it
26:17was it really was so how are the doggy designs coming along i think i'm done what do you think
26:25i've spelt it right haven't i a u r o r a whoopsie oh let me see
26:37it's a u r o r a aurora a u r o r a i mean you can do a little o maybe are you missing an o
26:45i'm missing an o i'm missing an o an r and an a oh okay well she can be called aura
26:52i was too busy talking to you i'm so sorry i was my fault it really does
26:56i'm not blaming you oh i couldn't believe it i honestly thought i'd done it right a
27:02you are it and i was sitting back going that's not a aura you're gonna change your name just for
27:10the sake of the bowl just changing the name oh my god are you kidding me have i spelled this wrong
27:15you have i just got caught up in the moment do you know what it was just so relaxing and things
27:21i just yeah it's forgot i just yeah don't don't know yeah i can't yeah whatever it was just nice
27:29would it be possible to get these wrapped and we can get them fired when we get home
27:32of course is that okay yeah thank you thank you hang on who won the competition then i don't think
27:40my design was brilliant but you know anyone no but it was nice yeah and yeah i'm definitely the
27:44more artistic one yeah well mines wouldn't look out your place in a nursery
27:51thank you take care i doubt you'll be in the dog house with the pups james
27:55back at the wooden shoe workshop put your block of wood at the end of your knife so you have more
28:04power to cut into it and then we'll see that it's turning into a wooden shoe jackie and tamara's
28:12traditional dutch clogs haven't exactly taken shape yet the little imagination it's giving similarities
28:21somehow it's giving something you have to have patience to get a nice wooden shoe it takes around
28:27four hours to take a pair i think we would not have achieved a wooden shoe in a week well your
28:33ship's leaving in just a few hours so better get your skates on marco and a little modern technology
28:40come to the rescue i'm not gonna lie and say i'm gonna take up wooden shoemaking in the future i don't
28:46see it for me but it was very fun to learn from him because he's someone so passionate about wooden
28:52shoemaking and someone who really does know what they're doing and know their craft really well
28:57with their blocks shaped the ladies make their finishing cups are you still going i mean i think
29:04i'm about done it's up to the master to decide who is his best apprentice so ladies let's take a look at
29:11your clocks yep looks good have a look at this one they're beautifully made especially for the first
29:20attempt you can stay here oh wow you as well thank you thank you you're welcome thank you so much
29:29the final step is a bit of personalization
29:32my penmanship might be slightly better than yours you know that's jackie yes but there's also two
29:40ways of our we were given a hot pen to write our names in on our clothes are you done i'm done
29:50okay turn that around well i think i'm done then perfect pair of clothes
29:55yes your artistic flair shone through i don't know if it was an artistic flair but it was just
30:02fun to do something different was a less less taxing than the shaving i can still feel the shaving
30:14in downtown amsterdam the boys have got a waft of something
30:18it's a dutch waffle shop and there's amsterdam famous for waffles but i like the smell of this
30:24place so i think we should have a look this smell was unbelievable this was so sweet it immediately
30:33made my mouth water it was it kind of drew me straight in because i've got a real sweet
30:37he's got a massive massive sweet massive sweet too
30:39oh i tell you smell it smells amazing welcome to my stroopwafels oh thank you we've just been
30:47walking over in lamsterdam and we just stumbled across this yeah well this is the famous dutch
30:51stroopwafels we make them here fresh all day oh wow the world famous stroopwafel is thought to
30:59have been first baked in the city of gouda in the 1800s these caramel filled delights are perfectly shaped
31:06to sit on top of your cuppa to melt the gooey center and before the boys taste some of these
31:11waffly treats if you're interested uh i can we can go downstairs and we can show you how uh how we
31:17make it oh that would be nice i'd love that yeah we'd love that yes you don't often get invited in
31:22you know if you're going to a shop at home you won't get invited in to see how they make their products
31:28or or to see what goes on behind the scenes and it was nice to learn something like that it felt
31:32like when we were doing a little waffle making workshop so you have a stroopwafel stroop is the
