00:00Tight end, formerly of the Niners, of Washington, and others around the league.
00:05Jordan Reed is going to join us here momentarily,
00:08and we'll get his thoughts on the team and what's going on,
00:12but also he is executive producer on a new show coming out called Off Season,
00:17and it profiles elite athletes and spends a whole episode with them
00:23going over their off season, their family life, their agent life,
00:26their team life, their workout life, all of these things.
00:29And among those on the show coming up this season are both George Kittle and Ricky Pearsall.
00:37Joining us right now on the River Island's guest line is none other than
00:40that former tight end, Jordan Reed, here on Willard & Dibs, 95.7 The Game.
00:45Hey, Jordan, thanks for coming on, man. It's great to have you.
00:48Yes, sir, man. Thanks for having me, bro. It's a pleasure.
00:51Yeah, take us through this show and how the whole thing came together.
00:56Yeah, man, so the idea of off season came together, a group of partners got together
01:03and just realized that, you know, off season is, you know, part of the year for athletes
01:10that, you know, is fairly untouched and untold, and a lot of big stories happen during the off season,
01:17and it gives people a real glimpse into what it takes to being a professional athlete
01:22and, you know, being at the high stage.
01:27I mean, it's incredible, and I wonder how you go about figuring out and deciding
01:32who you want to profile and what stories you want to tell and, you know,
01:35just how many of these players are just kind of dying to tell their story.
01:39Yeah, man, so the platform gives athletes, you know, the ability to tell their story
01:45in a cinematic way and in a way they want it to be told without, you know,
01:51the media touching it and twisting and turning their words.
01:54They have a voice, and then they can executive produce their own episode.
01:58So it's an exciting concept, and we're glad to be bringing it forth
02:02and deciding who's in it, man, we're going after the juiciest stories.
02:06We're going after the real stories that haven't been told.
02:10For example, Ricky Pearsall, you know, him coming in his rookie year
02:13and then having that horrific thing happen to him right as he's getting drafted.
02:20You know, it's the first time he's able to go on camera and tell a story,
02:24you know, in a safe environment.
02:27Jordan Reed is with us, former NFL tight end, former Niner tight end,
02:31an executive producer of this show offseason.
02:34And, yeah, Jordan, we just played a little clip from the trailer
02:38where Ricky is completely in tears trying to recount what was going through his mind
02:44right after that bullet went through his midsection.
02:48And so I would love to hear more about what you learned about Ricky Pearsall
02:54in the shooting of this show.
02:57Yeah, man.
02:58Yeah, just the fact that he went up there,
03:01and opened up like that and showed me a lot about him
03:05and showed me how traumatic that situation was for him,
03:09which I definitely could understand.
03:12But, you know, just giving him the space to tell that
03:16and feel comfortable enough to open up,
03:19it's an honor for him to feel that way on our platform.
03:23But, yeah, man, it's all about telling the real stories.
03:30It's all about giving guys the platform to feel comfortable,
03:35to speak their mind, speak their truth.
03:38And Ricky, one thing that I learned from him, you know,
03:42and I understand why he's such a great kid and great athlete,
03:46I mean, he has an amazing support system around him.
03:49It's from his father, his mother, his sisters,
03:51and all his friends and his girlfriend.
03:54And you get to see that in the episode.
03:56You get to see why he's such a special person.
04:00And it's about the people he's surrounded with.
04:03How much time did you get to spend with Ricky,
04:05and how emotional was that for you to see him be so frank and honest
04:10in recounting what was an absolutely horrifying incident?
04:15So we had a crew down with Ricky, I think, if I can recall, four days.
04:22And during that process, man, everybody on set was pinging me,
04:28telling me how excited they were that, you know,
04:31Ricky was so comfortable in front of the camera
04:32and his personality was so charismatic.
04:36I stay and let those guys have their space.
04:40It's not about me.
04:41I just want those guys to feel 100% comfortable in their own space.
04:46There's a crew out there and there's professionals there
04:49that are guiding athletes through the days and the work.
04:53But, yeah, they're super excited about, you know, how Ricky opened up.
04:57Jordan, we're all so excited right now
05:00because two days from literally this moment, from 48 hours from now,
05:04George Kittle's going to be back on the football field
05:07for the first time since week one.
05:11And I'd love to sort of tap into not only your experience with him on this show,
05:15but you guys were teammates in 2020.
05:18So can you give me an idea of what his energy means to a football team?
05:24And George's energy, you know, he has that championship energy.
05:30He has that energy where in the huddle, you know,
05:33it doesn't matter what's going on in the game.
05:36You know you're going to go out there and you're going to give your full effort.
05:39And he's going to lead that up and make sure that's happening.
05:43And when you're in the huddle with a guy like that,
05:45all you can do is come along the same way and be uplifted
05:49because he just has that energy about him, true leader, true competitor.
05:54And, you know, I know they're going to have a championship.
05:57I know Kittle's going to win a Super Bowl on his day.
06:00We're certainly hoping so.
06:02And I wonder when you look at George or when George looks at himself,
06:06is he more offensive lineman mentality or more wide receiver mentality?
06:11It's funny you say that, man, because in his episode,
06:15he talks about that mentality.
06:16And he got that from his father being a former O-lineman and an O-line coach.
06:22And so he talks in detail about, you know,
06:25how his dad instilled that in him in an early age to, you know,
06:30the best feeling on the football field is to put a man on his back against their will.
06:35And he talks about just that.
06:38And, you know, it comes from his father and his upbringing.
06:41So it's pretty cool.
06:42We're talking to former Niners and Washington tight end Jordan Reed,
06:47teammate of George Kittle back in 2020.
06:50And also Kittle and Ricky Pearsall are a part of a new series called Off Season.
06:56And Jordan is an executive producer for that series.
06:59And it will profile everything that those guys go through in the off season.
07:04Jordan, I mean, just in general, when you're talking to these athletes,
07:07I'd love to know what you and all of them, what do they want the public to know
07:15about their off season and what they go through?
07:19They all have very unique stories to tell, man.
07:22Whether it's Ricky and his story, David and Joe Kool,
07:27and, you know, what he does in his off season,
07:30how he prepares, his mentality, the team he has around him.
07:34From Trey Hendrickson to, you know, dealing with everything he dealt with
07:40this off season with Cincinnati and, you know,
07:43how he was handling all the pressure of not knowing where he's going to end up
07:48holding out while still preparing for the off season.
07:52So it's just, it's amazing perspective.
07:55It gives fans, you know, true insight to what pros are doing
08:01and how they're preparing all the obstacles they have to face
08:04in order to get just to the season alone.
08:08So, yeah, man, it's pretty, it's pretty amazing.
08:11It's a great list of guys you got racked up for the first season.
08:15I'm sure you're already thinking about future episodes.
08:18Is there anybody else out there that you're thinking, man,
08:21we've got to get them on for next season as we get into season two?
08:24Honestly, we're still, we're in talks a little bit,
08:30but we're figuring out that list and, you know,
08:34what happens this season and during this season
08:37and going into early off season is going to decide, you know,
08:41who we're going to want to feature in the next season of things.
08:45But it's all about the real stories, man.
08:47We want to be able to tell them and give people a real insight
08:50to what it takes and, you know, just giving these athletes, you know,
08:56a platform to tell their stories.
08:58Jordan Reed, 28 career touchdowns.
09:01Four of them were with the Niners.
09:02In 2020, you played with the Niners.
09:04There was the sprained MCL week two, but then you did come back.
09:07You played 10 total games that year.
09:10So, we'd love to tap into some of your expertise from that season
09:14and your time with the Niners.
09:17What's it like playing for Kyle Shanahan?
09:19Man, it's awesome.
09:22It's – the 49ers are a great organization, truly professional.
09:28It's a positive energy in the building all the time.
09:31And, you know, you just have to – you know, you have to prepare
09:36and be ready because Kyle brings in the most competitive players
09:41from the draft, the sharpest players,
09:44and he makes them even more disciplined and even more serious, you know,
09:49as he's developing them out.
09:51So, you know, being there, you had to bring it every day.
09:55There was no – there was no messing around.
09:58There was – you know, when you walk through the locker room,
10:01you see guys like Fred Warner in his locker constantly studying film,
10:07not talking, not messing around.
10:08You walk through a quiet locker room and you see Fred in the corner
10:12looking at his playbook locked in.
10:14All you can do is get locked in at that point
10:16when you see a guy like that doing that.
10:18So, that's the culture he built from, you know, the guys they brought in there.
10:23So, it was an amazing experience.
10:25And, you know, I learned a ton – I learned a ton about it.
10:29And that's what – you know, I use the same things that I learned
10:32from my days in the league, my time with Shanahan
10:35and all the guys to propel me into his next career.
10:39Yeah, and you also played with Trent Williams as well.
10:41How important is it for a team to have those not only elite players
10:45but high-character guys in the room?
10:49Yeah, man.
10:50Like I said, all you can do is fall in line at that point.
10:53You're surrounded by a bunch of elite competitors
10:56who are constantly doing the right things in the training room,
11:01in the weight room, film study.
11:03All you can do is fall in line.
11:05And that's why you see so many of their younger guys coming in
11:08and being ready to play and make big plays
11:11is because they're preparing like vets.
11:13And they see their veteran teammates doing the right things
11:16and they're going to fall in line.
11:18Former Niners tight end Jordan Reed with us here on Willard and Dibs.
11:21Jordan, I'm sure you're well aware the 49ers are dealing
11:25with just a ton of injuries right now.
11:27And among them, the quarterback, Brock Purdy,
11:31is dealing with a turf toe situation.
11:33And they're trying to figure out when to bring him back.
11:35And it's not lost on everybody that two weeks from this weekend,
11:39they will be in New York to face the Giants at MetLife Stadium.
11:43It's the same stadium where week two in 2020,
11:47you sprained your MCL.
11:49Nick Bosa tore his ACL.
11:51Solomon Thomas tore his ACL.
11:52What is your perspective on that field
11:56and how a turf toe injury might do on it?
12:01Yeah, when we played on that field, if I remember correctly,
12:05it was the first year of the turf getting put down.
12:09And so it was brand new turf, which obviously wasn't broken in yet.
12:16And I think that's what caused a lot of the injuries that got that game.
12:20Guys were getting stuck in the turf in awkward positions,
12:24which led to a lot of injuries in those two weeks.
12:28We played at that field two weeks in a row.
12:32So, you know, I chalked that up to being a brand new made turf
12:37that wasn't broken in yet.
12:39I think that, you know, it's good now.
12:42You're not hearing about all these crazy injuries.
12:44I think that year, Saquon actually tore his ACL as well on that same turf.
12:51So, yeah, you're not hearing about all the guys getting injured there anymore.
12:55So I think it's going to be fine for Brock.
12:56Yeah, I mean, the sticky turf, I hadn't even thought about that, Jordan.
13:00The new turf, obviously going to be a lot stickier than when it starts to wear in
13:04and it gets a little bit easier to kind of navigate.
13:07I wonder about, you know, just the rigors, not only of the turf,
13:11but of the travel, and now here we are, not quite to midseason,
13:14but, you know, you've got six games under your belt.
13:16How taxing is that, not only physically, but mentally,
13:19as you start to settle into the meat of a season?
13:23I think, you know, I think that's when guys really start to catch their, you know,
13:29get in the routine of things, start to get in real football shape,
13:33in season shape.
13:34So if you can stay healthy and not get too banged up in those first six games,
13:41then, you know, you're usually ready to take the hits
13:44and your body's more prepared for the rest of the season.
13:50And then when they are dealing with injuries, if they got some early ones,
13:53then, you know, like you said, Georgia's starting to come back around.
13:57Brock, he's getting ready to play as well.
14:00So it's going to be a good couple weeks, I think, for the 49ers.
14:05Jordan, it's really nice to have your perspective, man.
14:07And I'll tell you what, we're sure interested to see these episodes when they come out.
14:12Can you tell people a little bit about where the project is right now
14:16and what they might be able to expect?
14:19Yeah, man.
14:20So we're looking at a holiday season launch on multiple platforms.
14:26Even that, you know, once we are ready to, you know,
14:31let everybody know what platform it's going to be on,
14:33we definitely will have the guys posting about it.
14:36And, you know, it's going to be an exciting time.
14:39And we're really excited to give the fans this insight
14:43and launch our first season.
14:46All right, Jordan, best of luck with it.
14:48We're very, very interested to see these episodes.
14:51And really nice to have you on the show.
14:53Thank you for doing it.
14:54Yes, sir.
14:55Thanks for having me, guys.
