Bruins bonding trip? Is the Bruins 3-1 start to the season surprising? Bruins PBP announcer Judd Sirott
joins! Does Sirott think this Boston team is for real? #nhl
Transcript
00:00Have you been able to witness any of the bonding that is a part of this trip?
00:04Marco Sturm wanted it to be a bonding trip for the fellas.
00:07Have you been able to see any of that?
00:09No, I mean, that's really for the players.
00:11What they did was, so the first day that we got down here,
00:14they had a team poker tournament that took place at one of the casinos here in town.
00:20And it wasn't just the players, it was the staff,
00:22it was some of the media relations people,
00:25and they scattered everybody onto those tables.
00:29So it wasn't like players at one, coaches at another, staff at one.
00:33Everybody was kind of mixed up, and everybody said it was a terrific time.
00:38I guess Victor Arvidsson was your winner in the poker tournament.
00:42And then the players had a chance to do something away from the coaches and the staff,
00:47another player bonding event that they had.
00:51And then yesterday was back to practice, and I talked to David Pasternak.
00:55He's like, as much fun as we had, time to refocus.
00:57Hold'em or Blackjack, or do we know what the game of choice was for the NFL?
01:03No, it was Hold'em.
01:05That's what they ended up playing.
01:06So, you know, and like there's a bunch of, like on the team playing,
01:11you know, there are a couple of card games that are going on,
01:13and David Pasternak is a part of one of them.
01:15So I asked him, I said, did you have an advantage going into this tournament?
01:18And he said, you know, not really.
01:22I guess he said, I had a couple of really good hands early on,
01:26but I got bounced out pretty early.
01:28Didn't have my A poker game.
01:30You know, Gerard Mayo used to like to play cards with the fellas on the plane after a loss.
01:36Is Marco Sturm, is he playing, or no?
01:40No.
01:40No.
01:41Marco's at the front.
01:42The boys are near the back.
01:44Yeah, be careful.
01:45His money's not as long as those, you know, those players' money.
01:47You don't want to get in those games.
01:49Is the start that these guys have gotten off to surprising to you?
01:56A little bit.
01:59I think it's, you know, part of it is the results, Greg.
02:02You know, and I think part of it is how well Marco Sturm has gotten the guys to play that the way he wants to,
02:09the structure he's wanted to play with, the speed that he wants to play with,
02:12and how quickly as a group, you know, remember there are a lot of new players and some new faces,
02:19and, you know, the way that the leadership is structured is a little bit different.
02:23So I think that what we've seen across these first four games has been maybe a little bit more encouraging,
02:31but I think part of that is that heading in, you didn't know exactly what to expect
02:35and how high the expectations were, I know that the Bruins felt like if their goaltending,
02:42if their defense, if their special teams came back online, that they could compete for a playoff spot,
02:47and that's certainly been the case here through four games.
02:50Now the test changes significantly.
02:52You've got a long trip as far as the time change is concerned.
02:56You've got the three-hour time change you're going to have to deal with here tonight,
02:59and you've got three and four against some really good teams,
03:03and that last team in Utah may not be as established as Colorado and Vegas,
03:08you're going to see at the start, but they're going to be sitting and waiting for you,
03:11and that face-off is two hours prior to the game that the Bruins play in Denver.
03:17Judd, when do we start to say, like, okay, because the Bruins have looked good these first couple of games,
03:22but when do we know, like, all right, is this for real?
03:24Is this who they really are?
03:26Like, when's that kind of point of the season where you would say, okay,
03:31this is where we will realize what this team is?
03:37That's a really good question.
03:39You know, when do we establish that?
03:41When do we know that?
03:44You know, I think for most teams, you know, once you get toward, I would say, early November,
03:50and obviously a lot of people are going to be talking about, okay,
03:52what is this team like when you hit Thanksgiving in the United States?
03:57Because that's usually the marker.
03:59If you're at or in a playoff position, at that point, you know, the odds are pretty good
04:04you're going to be able to make it into the playoffs.
04:06So I think we've got a little ways to go.
04:10I think we need a longer sample size to be able to say that.
04:14Judd, some people upset that Corpus Allo was in goal in that loss to the Lightning.
04:18They were surprised by that.
04:19What were your feelings?
04:20Courtney, I mean, I think I understand, you know, why people may have thought that.
04:27But in the bigger picture, especially with the schedule that they have,
04:31you need to be able to keep him sharp.
04:35And you also need to be able to push Swayman.
04:37So if you look in the bigger picture, let's say you started Swayman in that game
04:41against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
04:43You were going to definitely start Swayman here tonight
04:45against the Vegas Golden Knights.
04:48So that means, and then you'd probably start him again against Colorado.
04:51So that means you wouldn't have had Corpus Allo play.
04:54So go back, what, he won the game against the Blackhawks.
04:57He wouldn't have played until Sunday against the Utah Mammoth.
05:03So I think that that's one of the things that they looked at.
05:06You know, and by that same token,
05:09I think he earned the opportunity to start.
05:12He probably should have been the number one star in that game against the Blackhawks.
05:17I know in talking to some people who put together those stars with the saves that he made,
05:22especially in overtime, to give the Bruins an opportunity.
05:26I think the Bruins will tell you that the way that Corpus Allo played
05:29allowed the Bruins to win that game against the Blackhawks
05:33and get that overtime goal from Fraser Minton.
05:36So not necessarily surprised.
05:38I think that that was probably something that they mapped out very early
05:41and that they went with.
05:44Judd, when you look at the way that they're going to do it this year with the Bruins,
05:50are your expectations that we'll see more of like a,
05:54I don't want to say 50-50,
05:55but is it going to be more like, you know, 55-45 with Swayman, Corpus Allo,
06:01or are they going to get to the point where it's more along the line 70-30?
06:07You know, difficult to tell, Wiggy.
06:08I think, you know, and it's a little bit different because, you know,
06:11when you look at this schedule, it's a little bit more compressed
06:14than it has been in the past because of the Olympics.
06:17You know, so you're going to have a lot of these segments of three and four, four and six.
06:21You know, we're just into the season
06:22and the Bruins are right in the mix of all those games.
06:24You know, and I think the other thing that was clear
06:27in listening to the general manager, Don Sweeney,
06:30after last season and before this season started,
06:33he felt Jonas Corpus Allo should have played more last year.
06:36Part of that was on merit.
06:39And so I think that based on what's happening with both Jeremy Swayman
06:43and Jonas Corpus Allo,
06:45I think that's going to sort of influence how often you see both,
06:49where the split is and what that sweet spot is.
06:52I'm not sure if I had to guess.
06:54It's Swayman somewhere in, you mentioned 55 games,
06:58somewhere between 55 and 60 would be my guess.
07:03As a member of the Bruins media, Judd,
07:06would you embrace being challenged to a game of shinny
07:12by the Bruins coaches as the Celtics media were here in Boston the other day?
07:19I can tell you, Greg, if I'm out there playing shinny,
07:22it wouldn't be much of a game.
07:25I saw the Celtics coaches, like, what, they destroyed the media?
07:29Yes, they did.
07:30So I'm pretty sure that, you know, the coaches here.
07:33Let me tell you something, they owned them.
07:34Yeah.
07:35They absolutely owned them.
07:36I'd jump in on your team, though, on the media,
07:38so I'd probably be able to help you guys out.
07:40Yeah, Wiggy, you know, if I got Wiggy, you know,
07:43Wiggy, you know, what position are you playing?
07:45Are you playing center?
07:46Are you playing wing?
07:47No, I'm a right wing.
07:48I'm a power forward.
07:49I don't play much defense.
07:50Yeah, well, Greg is, too, so you've got to figure that out.
07:53On the same line?
07:54Who's centering these guys' pucks?
07:56We throw them in net when we want to stuff that baby up,
08:00if you know what I'm saying.
08:01Oh, dear.
08:02Greg's an ankle bender, so he's not going to be on the first line.
08:04Oh, I'm an ankle bender?
08:05He'll be on the fifth line.
08:06I played over 30 hockey for 10 years and won the league five of seven years
08:11when I was playing.
08:11Was you ever an over 30 MVP?
08:14I was.
08:14Yes, I was.
08:15Like I was?
08:16Honestly, I'd set myself up right in front of the net,
08:18and just like Cam Neely, they called it my office.
08:20Hockey is the only thing in Greg's life that he's been over 30 in.
08:25Well, I think we're good for two goals.
08:28Who's playing net for us?
08:31Probably Sean.
08:32I don't think we would.
08:33Razor's a friend of the program.
08:34Oh, yeah.
08:35Technically a member of the media now, too.
08:37We got Razor in net.
08:38We can't afford that.
08:39No, no, no.
08:39Razor, even the alumni games, he doesn't play goal.
08:43That's why he likes to play out.
08:44Oh, we can get Reggie Lemlin.
08:45He stacked the pads.
08:46So first line could be me and Bergie,
08:48and then you guys can figure out the rest from here.
08:53Actually, you could probably throw Tuca in there.
08:55I don't know if Tuca could throw any pads.
08:56Oh, yeah, that's right.
08:57I forgot about Tuca.
08:58You got Char on the media.
08:59Yeah, no, that's right.
09:00Well, at least you guys are chipping a couple of goals,
09:03but I think we'd probably allow 50.
09:05All right.
09:06Well, what's up for you in Vegas, taking in any shows or anything like that,
09:09or just work?
09:11No.
09:11First day I got out here, Brick, Stevie DeSilva, our camera guy,
09:16Adam Peller, and I, we went out and played a little golf,
09:18and then headed over to the Aria to take in a cigar.
09:24Great name for a bar, by the way, here.
09:25It was called Alibi.
09:27That's a perfect name for a bar.
09:28That's a perfect name.
09:30No shows at the Sphere?
09:31No, you know, I think somebody from the traveling party headed over there
09:35because I think the Wizard of Oz is playing.
09:37Yeah.
09:38And I heard it's supposed to be amazing, but didn't head over to the Sphere.
09:43Vegas is great for one night and one night only,
09:48and then you have to get out of there.
09:49It's just not.
09:50For me personally, I don't.
09:52And people say, oh, the food is great, restaurants.
09:54I just don't.
09:55I don't love the whole Vegas thing.
09:58No, it's like 36 to 48 hours.
10:00Come in, feel like a king or a queen, and get the hell out of here.
10:03And get out of there.
10:04All right, Chad.
10:05Well, we will be watching this evening, although 10 o'clock late for us,
10:09and we will talk to you again next week.
10:13All right.
10:14Take care.
