00:00NATO defense ministers have agreed to strengthen their deterrence capabilities
00:05to protect the airspace of member states.
00:09A convoy of 400 trucks carrying food, medicine and fuel was dispatched for Gaza from Egypt on Wednesday
00:16as Israel limits delivery, citing Hamas truce violations.
00:20Syrian President Ahmad al-Shara made an unprecedented official visit to Russia
00:25less than a year after his rebel forces ousted Kremlin ally Bashar al-Assad.
00:30NATO defense ministers have agreed to massively increase deterrence capabilities
00:34when it comes to drones and Russian jets that have been seen in NATO airspace in recent weeks.
00:40Mark Rutte, the NATO Secretary-General, made the point that if any of these jets or drones
00:44pose a threat to NATO territory, then they can be shot down.
00:48He was also asked about the issue of Tomahawk cruise missiles and whether or not he thought
00:52that Donald Trump, the US president, would agree for Ukraine to have access to these missiles
00:57and use them in Russian territory.
00:59He said, of course, this was Donald Trump's decision alone, that we'd hear about it on
01:03Friday at a meeting at the White House between President Zelensky and President Trump.
01:06But he said overall he was happy this conversation was taking place because ultimately it's about
01:11bringing Vladimir Putin to the negotiation table.
01:14Sweden is readying for war.
01:18Sweden is readying for war.
01:20Since 2024, it has invested around 7.7 million euros to upgrade its 64,000 shelters built during the Second World War and the Cold War,
01:31like this one in Sweden's capital of Stockholm.
01:35Del Geldam's car park seems like an ordinary underground parking area carved into the rock face,
01:42but it can actually also serve as a public shelter for 1.2 thousand people.
01:47It can resist the blast and debris and such things that come through the bomb.
01:59And then it's airtight, so it even resists biogas or chemical gas or even nuclear waste.
02:13With tensions with Russia increasing since the full-scale war in Ukraine,
02:18the Swedish government has promised to increase its civil defence budget by seven times.
02:24But Johansson says the money allocated is unlikely to cover the cost of fixing all of the shelters,
02:31let alone building new ones.
02:34Sweden's civil defence minister warned last year that a military attack could not be ruled out.
02:43A convoy of eight trucks drove through the Rafah border crossing from Egypt into Gaza on Wednesday,
02:49according to the Egyptian Red Crescent.
02:51The convoy of 400 trucks was carrying 5,700 tons of food,
02:56more than 1,400 tons of medical supplies and equipment, and around 2,500 tons of fuel.
03:02State-run Egyptian broadcasters showed footage of the convoy as it passed through the Egyptian side of the crossing.
03:08They were headed to an Israeli inspection area in the Karim Shalom crossing
03:11before being allowed into the enclave.
03:15It's part of phase one of the ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas,
03:19brokered by U.S. President Donald Trump.
03:22The deal stipulated that pre-war levels of 600 trucks a day were to be allowed into Gaza
03:26to replenish the struggling population with critical food and supplies.
03:31Israel said, however, that it would only permit 300 trucks daily,
03:35citing alleged Hamas violations of the deal.
03:38Earlier in the week, Israel threatened to keep Rafah shut and reduce aid supplies
03:43as it accused Hamas of releasing the bodies of deceased hostages too slowly.
03:49Humanitarian groups have called on Israel to immediately abide by the terms of the deal
03:53and allow the agreed-upon number of trucks to enter this trip.
03:56The war in Gaza may be over, but thousands of people across Spain have taken part in a national strike
04:06called by major labor and student unions to protest what they describe as a genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.
04:14Protests were reported in major cities including Madrid, Barcelona and Sevilla,
04:21where demonstrators carried Palestinian flags and banners calling for peace and justice.
04:26The strike comes just days after the announcement of the first phase of a peace plan
04:51between Israel and Hamas.
04:53Despite the diplomatic breakthrough, organizers pressed ahead to demand an end to the violence in Gaza
05:00and the severing of ties with Israel.
05:03Spain's center-left coalition government has been one of the most outspoken in the EU
05:08against Israel's attacks on Gaza.
05:11Yet, support for Palestine has become an increasingly divisive national political issue.
05:17It's an announcement that has sparked lots of debate here in France.
05:24The suspension of the pension reform, one of President Emmanuel Macron's most controversial policies,
05:31is expected, barring any surprises, to be formally approved by Parliament in November.
05:38And not everyone is happy about it.
05:40The government is pausing the retirement age increase from 62 to 64.
06:09To avoid a new confidence vote.
06:13But in Paris, protesters remain wary of this promise.
06:39A reform that is being put on pause, but not fully scrapped.
06:43It looks like pensions will remain at the heart of public debate in France for many years to come.
06:49Syria's interim president, Ahmad al-Shara, met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow
06:57in an unprecedented official visit on Wednesday.
07:01The visit comes less than a year after al-Shara led a swift rebellion
07:05which dethroned Kremlin ally and longtime president Bashar al-Assad in December.
07:10He was greeted with full military honours upon his arrival
07:14as the Kremlin looked to establish working ties with the country's new leadership.
07:20Putin said, however, that Russia's policy towards Syria remains constant,
07:24claiming that it's rooted in the same driving principle as it always was.
07:40Speaking to reporters, Al-Shara noted that his country shares a deep and historic link with Moscow.
08:01The Syrian leader said much of the infrastructure was built by and is maintained by Russians.
08:06Former President al-Assad currently resides in Russia,
08:11his home since fleeing Syria when rebel forces entered the capital Damascus.
08:16Al-Shara is expected to seek al-Assad's extradition to face a trial back home
08:20for war crimes committed in Syria's 14-year civil war.
08:25In an interview with U.S. media earlier this week,
08:28he said that his government will use all available legal means to hold the ousted president to account.
08:33The Kremlin has so far avoided the topic.
08:41European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen
08:44continued her multi-state tour of the Western Balkans on Wednesday
08:48as she visited Kosovo and met with its leadership.
08:51The visit followed an earlier stop in Belgrade
08:54where the commission chief met with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic,
08:58urging him to make concrete his country's commitment to EU accession.
09:01In Pristina, the Kosovar capital,
09:05von der Leyen met with President Vyosa Osmani
09:07as she looked to advance the bloc's enlargement program in the region
09:11before moving on to North Macedonia.
09:14President Osmani reaffirmed Kosovo's commitment to EU membership
09:18and underlined the vaster forms being made to democratic practices and rule of law indexes.
09:24Von der Leyen also met with acting Kosovar Prime Minister Albin Kurti.
