00:00Every serious incident on the road requires forensic examination.
00:07We've got to start asking the question, why is this happening?
00:10Pedestrian's been struck in the cold-off area of the steel carriageway.
00:14The car has filled the stop.
00:16And inside the cordons, dedicated officers take on this challenge.
00:20Clearly, I don't think this came out of the factory sounding like that.
00:25This person's lost their life for whatever reason.
00:28We're here trying to establish why.
00:34Only now can I realise that that is actually in the middle of my lane.
00:38Tracking down the evidence.
00:40This is really important, this is key.
00:41To get to the truth.
00:43Once we've got somebody, that's going to put him in the driver's seat.
00:46There's a death on the road.
00:48So we've got to be investigating properly and thoroughly.
00:51This is a proper head scratcher, this is.
00:54All in a day's work for the crash detectives.
00:58We have a vehicle failing to stop, failing to stop.
01:08Eight, four, six, five, eastbound.
01:10You know, you keep your partial in that and echo.
01:12It's the opposite of the white position.
01:14Is that the target continue?
01:15Yes, yes.
01:16Yes, yes.
01:17We have a vehicle failing to stop, failing to stop.
01:18We have a vehicle failing to stop, failing to stop.
01:20Eight, four, six, five, eastbound.
01:22We have a vehicle failing to stop.
01:23Eight, four, six, five, eastbound.
01:24We can only keep your partial in that and echo.
01:25It's the opposite of the white position.
01:26Do I have a target continue?
01:27Yes, yes.
01:28Yes, yes.
01:29Stand down, stand down.
01:30It's hit.
01:31Somebody in the road works.
01:32It's hit.
01:33A road worker.
01:34Not unit.
01:35He's ambulance on the hurry up.
01:36His nails got an open fracture to his leg.
01:38It's a bad guy.
01:39It's a bad guy.
01:40It's a bad guy.
01:41Do you have a target continue?
01:42Yes, yes.
01:43Yes, yes.
01:44Yes, yes.
01:45Yes, yes.
01:46Yes, yes.
01:47Stand down, stand down.
01:48It's hit.
01:49Somebody in the road works.
01:50It's hit.
01:51A road worker.
01:52North unit.
01:53These ambulance on the hurry up.
01:54This nails got an open fracture to his leg.
01:55Yes, that's a safe.
01:56Eight, four, six, five.
01:57Eastbound.
01:58Todega towards Demerville.
01:59Let's get this road close, please.
02:00Tangles here at one.
02:01It's shut now so the helicopter can land.
02:03Yes, that's a safe call.
02:068465 Eastbound, Tadega towards Emma Vale.
02:10W, let's get this road close, please.
02:16Tangled 01, been shut now so the helicopter can land.
02:29As doctors treat a seriously injured man at the roadside,
02:33the car involved is nowhere to be seen.
02:40We've had the report of a vehicle that's failed to stop for a police patrol vehicle,
02:45and in failing to stop, it's hit a worker on the road.
02:49All we have at the moment is potential serious injuries,
02:53and we're searching for the vehicle.
02:58While this is all going ahead, I'll have a look in the footage.
03:01We'll have to try.
03:02And they're starting with a recording from the patrol car's dash camera.
03:08OK, so that's it there? Yeah.
03:11But it's got a really loud exhaust on it,
03:12and the number plate's running italics, so you can't actually read.
03:14The number plate probably hasn't read on here.
03:16At this point, we can see it. It's gone. It's going that fast. It's gone.
03:24Nothing to help with the vehicle, is there? No.
03:29But traffic cameras also cover this stretch of road.
03:32Go ahead.
03:36And officers have been trawling through the footage.
03:38Just to let you know, we're having a little bit of some testing off the range.
03:44The vehicle itself, it is much better.
03:46The Mitsubishi Lancer Vivo 8 in white.
03:50It would appear it's come off immediately after it's failed to stop.
03:54The cameras don't show it comes to after that.
03:58Yeah, OK, I suspect that's probably where it's done, but yeah, cool, thank you.
04:02Local searches for vehicles matching this description are now urgently underway.
04:18The 24-year-old man who's been injured is now stable enough to be taken to hospital.
04:24You're going in the ambulance as opposed to the helicopter, yeah?
04:27Yeah, you can go back home.
04:28Cool, thank you.
04:32As you can see, what we have is a two-lane section to do with the carriageway.
04:37So they coned off this down to one lane,
04:39with the right-hand lane being the live lane,
04:41the lane where the traffic is moving.
04:42And we've got a road worker working in the lane that's coned off.
04:48It appears that a vehicle has entered that coned-off area
04:51and struck the road worker before making off and feeling it to stop.
04:57The carriageway's going to go in the ambulance.
04:59It's not going to go with the helicopter now.
05:02I don't know. What's his injuries?
05:04So he's got an open fracture to his tib and his fib.
05:07OK.
05:09He has got head injuries as well, but they're not concerned about those.
05:13So they're saying move off in about five minutes.
05:15He remembers everything. He wasn't locked out at any point,
05:17so he's still fairly complex mental now. He's got all the drugs.
05:21Do you want an account from him?
05:22No. Do you want me to try and get one?
05:24Yeah, I've got agon issues with that.
05:25He may be able to tell us something that we don't know.
05:32Hello. Sorry, Megan.
05:34Before you move off, am I able to just have a quick chat with him?
05:36Yeah, yeah, yeah.
05:37Just to see if he remembers anything at all?
05:38Yeah, yeah, yeah.
05:39That's all right.
05:40Our guy, he's a meat flower, so he's blowing the leaves.
05:43The guy that was struck.
05:45That's his machine there.
05:46Right.
05:47They don't want to cause you any more trauma,
05:49but can you remember roughly what happened?
05:51I just blew it blowing in the road,
05:54and I could hear this noise.
05:56And as I looked up,
05:57and I could see this point,
05:58and it's a machine either coming at me,
06:01and I didn't have time to do anything.
06:02It hit me then.
06:03I know.
06:04Was he struck in the cold off lane,
06:06or was he in the live lane?
06:07In the cold off lane.
06:08He was in the dead lane.
06:09Yes.
06:10Right.
06:11All I could see was it driving up the dead lane.
06:14And do you remember which part of the car hit you?
06:16As I looked on the car, the right hand side.
06:18OK.
06:19So like the passenger side, yeah?
06:20Yes.
06:21This belongs to him.
06:23Was this where he was laying?
06:25Yeah.
06:26Yeah, he was sat down when the guys saw him.
06:31OK, I'll leave him to get you down to the hospital, OK?
06:33You're in good hands.
06:34Thanks, guys.
06:38Yeah, he's saying he was working about a metre or so away
06:40from the solid white line blowing the grass.
06:42Uh-huh.
06:43He can hear a loud noise, looks up,
06:45and a white Mitsubishi Eva, as he's described it,
06:47has been coming travelling.
06:48He's at home's office?
06:49Yeah.
06:50Has been travelling down the dead lane.
06:51Mm-hm.
06:52He said he wouldn't have...
06:53The...
06:54Eva wouldn't have come to anybody else first.
06:55He was the first person that he would have come to,
06:57and he hasn't had time to get out of the way.
06:58It's hit him, and he couldn't tell you which way it went.
07:01It was just travelling at speed.
07:03The driver might have fled this scene.
07:18Where's the debris?
07:20A little bit there.
07:21But it's not been the cleanest of getaways.
07:24Under that one.
07:25Under that one.
07:26Under that one.
07:27The parts suspect from the vehicle.
07:30We put it in the hood notes,
07:31we need the helicopter's landing.
07:36Yeah, that's fine.
07:38There's another bit of trim there, possibly.
07:44Looks a bit possibly around the front of the bumper, is it?
07:47That's the near-side door mirror.
07:57From a white vehicle.
07:59I suspect it's a white Mitsubishi,
08:01so the colour is correct.
08:03We've got quite a bit of debris from the vehicle.
08:06That's typical of an incident like this,
08:08where debris from a vehicle is deposited along the road
08:11as it's made off.
08:17Ideally, what I'd like to identify is the point
08:22of where the road worker was struck.
08:32A fibre there.
08:35Seems to match some clothing.
08:36The scratch and the scrapes here.
08:46The start here.
08:47You've got a deafening mark running through here.
08:49There.
08:51So that could be where he stood.
08:54A deposit of grass or whatever.
08:56But that suggests to me
08:59the evidence of the debris we got
09:01and this mark here that it is relatively local.
09:04He's been spun around and caught his leg.
09:08We'll find out which leg it is now.
09:12Which leg is it?
09:14Left leg.
09:15Left leg.
09:18She said he had his back to the traffic.
09:19Yeah, it's good.
09:20It was left leg then.
09:21Left leg.
09:22Left leg.
09:23Left leg.
09:24Left leg.
09:25Left leg.
09:26Left leg.
09:27Left leg.
09:28Left leg.
09:29Left leg.
09:30Left leg.
09:31Left leg.
09:32Left leg.
09:33Left leg.
09:34Left leg.
09:35Left leg.
09:36South Wales Police, which is an emergency?
09:37Hiya.
09:38I've just had a phone call to say
09:40that my car has been seen flying down the A465.
09:42Right.
09:43OK.
09:44And how long ago was this?
09:45About.
09:46I've just had a phone call now.
09:47I'm not at home.
09:48So is your car stolen or something, is it?
09:49Well, it must be love, yeah.
09:51So who rang you?
09:53My friend, my mate, he said, mate, do you want to slow down in that car?
10:06I was like, what do you mean?
10:07And he was like, do you need to slow down?
10:08I said, I'm not, I'm not, I haven't got my car back.
10:12And what type of vehicle is it?
10:14It's a Mitsubishi Evo.
10:15What colour?
10:16White.
10:20So what's the registration number of the car?
10:22It's F5, Evo.
10:29Well, what I need you to do, I need you to go home
10:31and just verify that the car isn't there.
10:37Someone in Mercer has just reported that Mitsubishi Evo is white,
10:40stolen.
10:42Foxtrot 5, echo Victor Oscar.
10:45He said that it's been stolen and a friend has told him
10:48they've seen on the A465.
10:50Roger, that is overheat.
10:56South Wales Police.
10:57Oh, hiya.
10:58I rang in earlier on to say I think my car has been stolen.
11:02OK.
11:03I've come home now and my car's definitely got off my drive.
11:06The officers are on their way now to check that out.
11:12To confirm whether it's the vehicle we're looking for or not.
11:15Do you want to come in?
11:16Yes, please, bud.
11:17Yeah.
11:18I'm better days, bud.
11:19I'm better days.
11:20I'm better days.
11:21I'm better a couple of months to be fair, yeah.
11:22What's happened, bud?
11:23Can we help you?
11:24Well, my car's gone, mate.
11:25So what time or what's happened as far as you're concerned then?
11:28Me and my missus have split up.
11:29We've been split up now for a couple of months.
11:30It's been armoured, but it's not been...
11:31It's not been...
11:32The best.
11:33He says they still share the same house and that morning had an argument about selling
11:56the car.
11:58I went out then about 10.30, and then, obviously, when I come back in, the car's come off
12:04and f***ing driving.
12:05But a second officer has been carrying out further enquiries.
12:09My life has been...
12:10Well, I don't know about her, but my life has been absolutely...
12:13Anthony, I've obviously just spoke to your neighbour.
12:16You're all captured on the ring doorbell.
12:18Right.
12:19To get in the car, leaving.
12:20Yeah.
12:21You've returned without the car.
12:22So, to us, obviously, your car was on the drive.
12:27You've left in the car.
12:28The car's not come back here.
12:30Right.
12:31At this time, bud, long and short of it, you're going to have to come to the police station.
12:35But there's been a serious collision up on there involving your car and a road worker,
12:41as far as I'm inferred.
12:43OK?
12:44You're going to have to come to the police station with us.
12:46You are under arrest at the moment on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
12:52OK?
12:53Yeah.
12:54Put them on in front.
12:55Yeah.
12:56Cool.
12:57Cool.
12:58Cool.
12:59Cool.
13:00Cool.
13:01How long will it take down the station?
13:03It's a good shelter on his ring doorbell.
13:04He's making everything he's going wrong.
13:05Two-six feet drop in.
13:06Two-six feet, right?
13:07Yeah.
13:08In relation to a arrest attempt, there's evidence of him getting in this vehicle at the material
13:14types.
13:15He's giving us a story which is completely different to that.
13:32Yeah, Roger.
13:33I'll let the signal now.
13:34Right.
13:35We made an arrest.
13:36We made an arrest.
13:37We made an arrest.
13:38We made an arrest.
13:39And a near neighbour or someone nearby puts him in the car, leaving with a dress.
13:52Excellent.
13:53Hello, what have we got?
13:55One in four causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
13:59I'll see.
14:00But overnight, he's had some time to reflect, and is now admitting to being at the wheel.
14:26OK, Ryan, you're in the car?
14:27Yeah.
14:28What's going on?
14:29Basically, I'm just driving like I normally do.
14:31Mm-hm.
14:32I'm a really careful driver.
14:34And I thought I'd seen, like, a police car up on the hill, but I wasn't sure.
14:40Then it dawned on me.
14:42I wasn't, like, escaping from the police.
14:46I just thought, try and get the car home, and then deal with it afterwards.
14:50Mm.
14:51But you were trying to escape, because you've seen the car, but, yeah, go on.
14:54What's happened then?
14:55As I'm coming down, what I'm thinking now is, obviously, that's a closed road, because
15:00as I've gone in, a cone has hit my wing mirror.
15:03I'm panicking then, and I've damaged my car.
15:05Then I've had, like, another impact, thinking of it, another cone, because it was just this
15:10wing mirror's gone.
15:11Mm.
15:12Mm.
15:13And then, obviously, I'm more panicking then, because I just sort of got off then as quickly
15:17as I can.
15:18That's when they phoned the police then and reported the stolen.
15:21Right.
15:22So it wasn't stolen, then?
15:23Yeah, obviously, no, no.
15:25What we didn't have at that point is the whereabouts of the car.
15:29So the inquiries were still ongoing.
15:32So where did you actually park the car?
15:34They parked the car up in Pound Stretcher and then just parked it in the middle of the
15:38car park.
15:39It wasn't until we had an initial interview that the driver admitted that he had parked
15:44the car in a local car park and then walked home.
15:49No.
15:50Can I have, like, a couple of minutes to speak to my sister?
15:53I think we're finishing now.
15:54I think now I'm finishing.
15:55Yeah.
15:56Unless there's anything you really want to tell us?
15:57Erm, can I speak to him first?
16:00With officers en route to retrieve the car, he now wants to change his story.
16:06I parked the car in Pound Stretcher.
16:08I've walked off from the car.
16:09Mm-hm.
16:10And then I thought, I can't leave my car here.
16:13It's a £50,000 car.
16:15Mm-hm.
16:16So I've gone back, got my car.
16:18There's a lead.
16:19So I've just put the car up there.
16:23He's trying to hide it, isn't he?
16:32It's tucked away.
16:33He's put the front end of the vehicle into the banking.
16:37It doesn't look from the rear that it's been involved in a road traffic collision whatsoever,
16:42but obviously as we look a bit closer, we can tell that, erm, it has.
16:47What damage was on the car, then, when you left it?
16:48Right.
16:49This is why I'm, this is why I'm shocked that someone got hit.
17:02Right?
17:03Because obviously my two wingman is gone.
17:05Two with both sides?
17:06The one is, the one is glass missing.
17:09Mm-hm.
17:10The one is gone.
17:11And then there's a dent in my wing, passenger side.
17:25It's not even proper body with this old fella.
17:26And my splitter's hanging off.
17:27First thing I noticed was this carbon fiber on the front that looked exactly like that
17:40that was left at the scene.
17:41But there's no, like, bumper damage, no bonnet damage, so...
17:42OK.
17:43Like, for me, thinking if I'd hit someone, there would be a lot more damage than that.
18:00This type of impact, it's very much on the corner of the car as it grants him blow.
18:04Yeah.
18:05But even so, if you look at the severity of the dent that's in that wing there, and then
18:10you've got a dent in the A pillar here as well, which is the upper part of his body or
18:14his torso, even his head may be contacted.
18:16Yeah.
18:17That's the structural part of the car.
18:20And to put a dent in that, it takes from doing it.
18:23There's a crease in there which has been caused when the wing mirror...
18:26Yeah.
18:27..has been forced against the pedestrian, slammed back into the door, and you can see
18:30the mark of the mirror, and there's fragments of glass in there as well.
18:34Obviously, this doesn't marry up with an air cone at all, does it?
18:38Certainly not.
18:39There's no evidence that he's struck a cone on this side of the car at all.
18:43The damage caused in the collision is clear to see.
18:47But the appearance of this car is now raising questions about what might be hiding under
18:54the bonnet.
18:55The Mitsubishi in itself, it's a quick car.
18:58For the car's age, it was probably considered to be one of the fastest cars on the road at
19:03the time, as a normal saloon car.
19:06So, it's an Evo 8.
19:08Yep.
19:092004 manufacturer.
19:10It's not exported, so it's a British car.
19:14But what he had done is adding modifications to the vehicle to greatly enhance the vehicle's performance.
19:25So what we needed to do is get a qualified vehicle examiner to have a look at the vehicle to examine the vehicle.
19:31That's an aftermarket inlet manifold, aftermarket exhaust manifold, all of this sort of, all of the stuff around the turbo,
19:42which is the bit that forces the air into, obviously, into the engine, has been replaced and upgraded.
19:48All the modifications were very much about speed and acceleration.
19:57That's not cheap.
19:59Putting that vehicle down the road as quickly as possible.
20:03If we start it...
20:04What brake horsepower is it?
20:11Um...
20:12It's an FQ 330, so it's around 330 brake.
20:16FQ 330...
20:17330 brake?
20:18Yeah.
20:19Jesus.
20:20While brake horsepower is an indication of how much power an engine produces...
20:25Ready?
20:26...there's something not quite adding up about the figure he's quoting.
20:29Hello, world, and welcome back to Accelerate.
20:31And welcome to Anthony's almost 900 brake horsepower Evo.
20:36We know that the driver was invited along to do a feature on his car.
20:40It was posted on YouTube two days before this collision.
20:46And it was recently...
20:47Like I said, he hasn't had it back long.
20:48It was dynoed at just under 900 horsepower.
20:52The driver, during an interview, had suggested that the car had a power output of around 330 brakes.
20:58But in reality, when you looked at the video, he'd suggested quite clearly a very different figure.
21:05This is by far the most powerful car I've ever been in, so let's get out on the road, shall we?
21:10So does it reveal any more about the driver himself?
21:14Especially on a day like today, it is raining.
21:17And Anthony's attitude is just, this is what they're built for, so we're still gonna have some fun.
21:22You can hear the car brake traction as all four wheels spin up.
21:35So if you listen now...
21:36You can hear the car's broken traction, and that's why you hear that it hit the limiter, basically, hit the rev limiter of the engine.
21:45Oh, I imagine this video is just gonna be me giggling like a schoolgirl, but that was...
21:51I mean, that was second gear, it just spanned then, didn't it?
21:55It just spins, but it's the things you can see.
21:58Yeah.
21:59Second gear, it just spins.
22:00It just spins, it lit the wheels up.
22:05He's putting all that power in, but he's got one hand on the wheel, one hand on the gear stick.
22:12Yeah, it can go wrong very quickly, and he won't be in a position to do a lot about it.
22:16The passenger's having to grab the seat belt.
22:19Yeah, it's maximum acceleration.
22:22You know, they're trying to get the maximum performance out of it for the effect.
22:25Even in four of them, it's...
22:28It's red to my stomach.
22:31You're tuned to the stomach, yeah.
22:34Yeah, it's a brutal car, I guess.
22:36What's your hat off to, like, in this ride?
22:38Even in my car, I wouldn't be pushing any of my cars.
22:40It has to be you.
22:42Hey, philosophy.
22:44This thing is...
22:45My car.
22:46It's like my mate, Davey's been in loads of fast cars, and...
22:48Yeah.
22:49I picked this up the other day, and we went out, and he was like...
22:52He'll tell if he's sh**ed out his head.
22:54He said, just slow down, bro.
22:56He said, I love your car, you're doing 175 mile an hour.
22:58He said, just slow down.
22:59175.
23:02Whether you believe him or not, he's telling people he's doing 175 mile an hour.
23:08I've never driven that car in anger.
23:10You know what I mean?
23:11That car is my everything, like, you know what I mean?
23:14Even when I take it on a track day, it's looked after.
23:17You know what I mean?
23:18It's never been hammered.
23:20It's never been, sort of, used and abused like some performance cars are.
23:26The worrying thing about it is when I did the examination of it,
23:29the actual condition of the vehicle, there was a lot of damage that had been caused to it.
23:35Yeah.
23:36And quite clearly, that damage had been caused by the way in which it had been driven as well.
23:40Yeah.
23:41A lot of the suspension mounts were very worn or were damaged.
23:45It's easy to see if it's been driven consistently in this sort of manner.
23:49The reasons why that damage may have been there.
23:51Mm.
23:53If I'd pulled that car over on the side of the road as a normal traffic stop,
23:58realistically, I probably wouldn't have let it go,
24:00because of the damage and some of the faults that I'd found with it.
24:05And on the day of the crash,
24:07officers parked by the side of the road did attempt to pull the car over.
24:11The camera on the patrol car couldn't read the number plate,
24:16and this raised suspicion.
24:20Despite reaching speeds of 131 miles an hour,
24:24the Mitsubishi is out of sight.
24:27But this wasn't the only camera recording at the time.
24:31There was a car being driven through the scene.
24:34A member of the public minding their own business
24:36that was fitted with dash cam both in the front of the car
24:39and out through the rear window.
24:43You see the evil pass it now.
24:46And he's braking.
24:52Goes off at the intersection.
24:55And the witness car carries on.
24:58I only noticed the police car, like, in the distance, flashing lights as I went up on the turn off of a trigger.
25:09But that was the point where it dawned on me that my car wasn't assured
25:14and this police officer was probably coming after me.
25:17So he decides to rejoin the dual carriageway.
25:22So, obviously, I've needed to overtake the lorry.
25:26So I've gone into, like, what would be the arch holder.
25:28You see the Mitsubishi ducked into the clothes lane, taking the cones out as well.
25:36And then we lose sight of it.
25:39You see a patrol car now pass as well on the inside.
25:43When the patrol car comes to a stop, because the injured person, as you can see, is, at this point, he's sat up in the road,
26:00having been struck by the evil.
26:03What's said to you when you're doing your driving licence?
26:08Erm...
26:10Only use the arch holder for emergencies.
26:12OK, so what did you use it for?
26:14At the time, that was an emergency for me.
26:16I believed that that was an emergency for me.
26:20So, you know, putting myself back there, that was an emergency for me.
26:27What did you class as the emergency?
26:29Erm, no one's sure what's on my car.
26:34My £50,000 car getting taken off me.
26:37I haven't had him patented, being, getting dragged onto a lorry.
26:42You know, all that.
26:44But he's still denying hitting the road worker.
26:47If I knew I'd hit someone, I would have stopped immediately.
26:52And that is the God's honest truth.
26:54Like, I'm not a bad person.
26:56We were confident that vehicle has struck the road worker,
27:01but we needed that tiny bit of evidence to actually prove the contact.
27:06While the driver left components of his car at the scene,
27:11he failed to realise he'd also taken some of the scene away with him.
27:16Look at that, mate.
27:19There they are.
27:20Fibres, eh?
27:21Orange fibres?
27:22Orange fibres.
27:23Yep.
27:24Look at that.
27:28They were a match to the trousers being worn by the road worker.
27:32What do you think now?
27:34Um, that he must have.
27:36What was he hit?
27:38That person.
27:41This young man who's trying to make a living.
27:46From that point, his life changed forever.
27:48He'll never be the same again.
27:50Ultimately, his significant injury has got to affect the way he lives the rest of his life.
27:58The driver admitted causing serious injury by dangerous driving
28:03and perverting the course of justice.
28:04Obviously, someone's been hurt because of my actions and it's absolutely...
28:14..maybe could have said that it's just ruined my day, to be fair.
28:18He was jailed for three years and four months.
28:21And the car has now been sold.
28:24His arrogance got the better of him, I think.
28:27And his obsession with the car probably clouded his judgement.
28:30To the detriment of this young man.
