00:00Every serious incident on the road requires forensic examination.
00:07We've got to start asking the question, why is this happening?
00:10Pedestrian's been struck in the cold off area of the steel carriageway.
00:14The car is filled for stop.
00:16And inside the cordons, dedicated officers take on this challenge.
00:20Clearly, I don't think this came out of the factory sounding like that.
00:25This person's lost their life for whatever reason.
00:28We're here trying to establish why.
00:34Only now can I realise that that is actually in the middle of my lane.
00:38Tracking down the evidence.
00:40This is really important, this is key.
00:41To get to the truce.
00:43Once we've got somebody, that's going to put him in the driver's seat.
00:46There's a death on the road.
00:48So we've got to be investigating properly and thoroughly.
00:51This is a proper head scratcher, this is.
00:54All in a day's work for the crash detectives.
00:58Hello ambulance.
00:59I don't know if you're aware of it, but we've got an RTC.
01:02Any casualties at all?
01:04One is unconscious in the near, but we haven't got an update on at the moment.
01:10If we need everything literally where it is now, alright, so I need to be fit as a scene.
01:16Yeah.
01:17So, is the driver's critical?
01:18They say there's critical life care.
01:19Passenger there, severe injuries but not as critical.
01:20Okay.
01:21As medics at the scene of this crash treat two seriously injured men.
01:22Is there anything in there that says who it is?
01:23Officers are now trying to find out who they are.
01:25Nothing in pockets or anything, anything?
01:26Is there anything?
01:27Is there anything?
01:28Is there anything in there that says who it is?
01:29Is there anything?
01:30Is there anything in there that says who it is?
01:31Is there anything in there that says who it is?
01:32They're trying to find out who they are.
01:33Nothing in pockets or anything is there.
01:34Passenger they've severe injuries but not as critical as medics at the scene of this crash
01:43treat two seriously injured men officers are now trying to find out who they are and people living
01:56nearby describe being first on scene tell me what's happened bud I was in bed my girlfriend woke me up
02:03and saw someone's crash outside and I could smell the I'll see the petrol then I've seen the gentleman
02:10over there and honestly I didn't see this guy until he came closer because there's no streetlights
02:16as you can see it's the motorcycle has actually collided with the pillar and gate and the extended
02:39stonewall of our section absolutely decimated it
02:46the motorcycles approach a junction coming up to a give way line
03:13so assuming at the moment that there's a rider and a pillion passenger
03:18the two are deemed life-threatening injuries
03:21don't know whether they thought they're going to make the bend or the junction
03:27but yeah definitely some lock-up mark there
03:29obviously the riders reacting using the brake emergency braking seems to have lifted off here
03:38that mark goes right through to that grass on the curb
03:45the wheel has picked up the grass and has ground it across this drop curb
03:52and then we've got some grindings going in
03:56while these marks show the path the bike has taken the damage reveals more
04:04looking at the bike you can see the actual forks and the wheel has been pushed back
04:12the fork should be out that way but they've actually been pushed to that angle
04:19oh yeah the alloy's gone there so that the impact has gone straight down through the bike
04:26if it was a side impact or they went in on the side they would be skewed out but everything's just been
04:33being pushed back right down through the line of the motorcycle
04:37and this is building a picture of exactly how it struck the wall
04:43oh he's gone in the post because of the metallic marks
04:50so you've got like the handlebar and you've got the levers
04:55which i would have said cause these marks
05:00the handlebar has it that height as the bike is coming in
05:05the rider hasn't slid the bike or the bike has dropped
05:09the bike is still in upright position
05:12if the rider or the pillion passenger slides across the road surface
05:22then you'll get abrasive marks on their clothing
05:24you'll get fibers in the macro structure of the road surface
05:28but i can't see anything so again it's indicating to me that
05:34as the bike has collided with the wall it's stood up
05:36it is still upright on its two wheels
05:39with both rider and pillion passenger still on the bike
05:43what's the width of that wall
05:48you know that's a good foot and a half wide that wall
05:53stone
05:54it's going to stop something in this track which is done
05:57while there's clear evidence of the rider braking
06:05components of his bike are also telling a story
06:08all the debris from the motorcycle
06:11just concentrated just stayed here
06:15and then you've got damage on the tank
06:19that'll be done by the rider's body
06:22you can see the friction marks here with the rubber
06:26and the leather the black marks
06:28and ritchie suspects he was also accelerating into the impact
06:37rev counter is snapped off
06:42the needle is stuck there
06:44it's in the red on 12 and a half thousand revs
06:47as a result of the collision
06:50the rider then actually turns the throttle on
06:53the wheel lifts so there's no resistance on the wheel
06:57so that's when you get a big high rev
06:59which explains how the man on the rear of the bike
07:03has been so badly injured
07:05the back wheel of the bike will lift
07:08so it's almost projecting the pillion passenger
07:11and evidently his blood there
07:14so I'm assuming that they're thrown over that way
07:16the man wasn't wearing a helmet
07:22nor any protective clothing
07:24but it's a different story for the rider himself
07:32they've got some element of protective clothing on
07:38you can't see a helmet at the moment
07:41but sometimes if the helmet was worn
07:43normally that goes with the casualty in the ambulance
07:47you can indicate to a consultant
07:49maybe that's where the damage
07:51or that's where the injury would be
07:53you know on the head
07:54you can see the time of this collision
08:12when he was reported to us
08:14it was eight minutes past one in the morning
08:16so at the time it's hours of darkness
08:18it's now what 20 past five
08:22and it's starting to get light
08:24five, six
08:30or seven
08:32potentially that is where the pillion passenger come to rest
08:40clothing left here
08:50is thought to belong to the man who was riding the bike
08:53that's the rider's shoe
08:58but how can he be so sure
09:01so you've got the white markings on there
09:05so that the shoe will be around that area
09:11you've got the rub mark on there
09:15on the shoe you've got those
09:20the square blocks
09:21if you measure them up
09:24there we are this could be fit
09:28so this shoulder here would create that rub mark there
09:32and as daylight brings a clearer view of the scene
09:40oh dear
09:42oh dear
09:44it's also revealed some more hidden damage
09:48the brake fluid yeah
09:55the brake reservoir
09:58has become detached from the handlebars
10:01and lost its fluid as it's bouncing across the road surface
10:05as it's been projected to here
10:07the fluid has just
10:09just covered the
10:11the Mazda
10:12all over the paintwork
10:14brake fluid is quite corrosive
10:17so
10:18it's going to damage the paintwork
10:19that's for sure
10:20and also maybe the soft top
10:21not good
10:24as evidence is captured with a 3D laser scanner
10:39Ritchie's now using the data
10:45to create a virtual version
10:47of the crash scene
10:48there's a clear and obstructive view there
10:51to the right of the junction
10:53you know it's an open view that way
10:57quite clearly see
10:59it's quite an open junction
11:01you know being a local person as well
11:03you know they should know the area
11:05so if the rider is familiar with the junction
11:10why has his journey ended in this way
11:13it transpired throughout the inquiry
11:16that CCTV became available
11:17from a camera
11:19facing down towards the road
11:21the motorcycle was traveling
11:22as you can see
11:24as you can see
11:24it's night time
11:25we've got some illumination there
11:27from the street lights
11:28you can see the lit road
11:30the point of impact
11:33where the motorcycle has lost control
11:34and then collided with the wall
11:36is at this area here
11:38what you do see is the flood of light
11:42from the motorcycle's headlight
11:43come from the right
11:45behind the hedgerow
11:47and that's where the motorcycle
11:54has collided with the wall
11:56we can't really see much on there then
12:01what has happened to the riders
12:02because of the darkness
12:03there's no attempt to stop
12:08no steer deviation
12:11there's no deceleration in the bike
12:13that is slowing down or anything
12:15the actual reaction of the brake then coming on
12:21and the wheels starting to lock up
12:23is very, very late
12:24it's a matter of several meters
12:26and it's all too late then
12:29a Yamaha R1 is a powerful motorcycle
12:33it's one of those bikes
12:34that you can reach a high speed
12:36very, very quickly
12:37whilst just going up
12:39probably through the first, second, third gears
12:42there's the view looking back down
12:45it's quite an open road
12:47there's plenty of opportunity there
12:51for a motorcyclist to open up the bike
12:52attain a speed that is
12:55far too fast for that road
12:57lead it into the junction ahead
12:59although we can't use this
13:04to calculate an accurate speed
13:05in my experience
13:07watching this on the CCTV
13:08you know, certainly the motorcycle
13:10is not travelling at 30 miles an hour
13:12but it's what can't be seen in the footage
13:16that also adds to this inquiry
13:18what we can say is that
13:20it was that vehicle on the road
13:22and no other vehicles at that moment in time
13:24this is solely down to the rider
13:27and the pillion passenger
13:28there's no other parties involved
13:29so was it just speed
13:35that caused the bike to lose control
13:37we know that evening
13:40that the rider of the motorcycle
13:42and the passenger
13:43they've both been out drinking
13:45the rider being the owner of the motorcycle
13:48he'd only just purchased that bike
13:49very recently
13:50the 36 year old rider
13:54was found to be almost twice
13:56the drink drive limit
13:58he'd also taken cocaine and ketamine
14:01he hasn't got a permitted license to ride it
14:05and also therefore he's an inexperienced rider
14:08not used to giving lifts
14:10or having a pillion passenger
14:11on the back of the motorcycle
14:13consuming alcohol, drugs
14:17then getting on a powerful sports motorcycle
14:20you know, for the pillion passenger
14:22to jump on the back
14:23and with no helmet
14:25you know, that could have gone easily the wrong way
14:29the two men were treated for life-threatening injuries
14:34they both survived the crash
14:37you know, they could have been two deaths there at the scene
14:41they are extremely lucky people
14:46the rider was charged with drink and drug driving
14:51as well as using the bike without a license or insurance
14:55but the case was discontinued
14:58as a prosecution was no longer considered
15:01in the public interest
15:02Gwen, please
15:10thank you, go and call her
15:11what's your emergency?
15:14there's been a car accident
15:15and the car's completely smashed a bit
15:17it is a control
15:19for the people in it must be hurt
15:21we've got a set for the C3
15:29has hit the stationary vehicle
15:32there's a female trapped in the Citroën passenger
15:36she, well, condition-wise
15:41they've just said it's time critical at the moment
15:43this crash has happened
15:48on a 50-mile-an-hour stretch of road
15:50close to the M48 motorway
15:53and now air ambulance doctors
15:59are treating a seriously injured
16:0232-year-old woman
16:03Alpha-1-6 and Alpha-1-15
16:11and she's still in there, she
16:15she's out, but she's
16:17they decided whether they were going to take her by road or by air
16:20but I think they're going to go with road
16:21obviously everything's still going on with the fire service
16:26and casualty's still at scene
16:27so that's the priority
16:28for us, it's for assessing the scenes
16:31seeing what we've got
16:32we've got to start asking the question
16:34why is this happening?
16:37the man driving the Citroën
16:39has escaped uninjured
16:41he's been arrested
16:43and now faces questions
16:45but the injured woman
16:48had to be cut free from the wreckage
16:50it's the roof
16:54hmm
16:56fire service have cut it off
16:59but it's interesting to see
17:01where the
17:02the damage is on the roof line
17:04that's the front right above the windscreen
17:07and the crew
17:11can explain more
17:13didn't run into that
17:13that's alright
17:14they took the roof off
17:16it was cut high
17:17high
17:17there
17:18so you can see it was there
17:20and there
17:20obviously they've cut the pillars
17:22but peeled back out as far
17:23yeah
17:24alright
17:25the B-post
17:28was completely severed
17:29yeah
17:30that was done
17:31prior to Askenya
17:32for the accident
17:33the B-post on the near side
17:34severed
17:35so the B-pillar's the middle one
17:41there's one of the most structural parts of the vehicle
17:47so that being ripped off
17:49it's quite significant
17:51the woman who was sitting here
17:56is now on her way to hospital
17:59the seatbelt's been ripped out
18:02and as they continue to find evidence
18:04of the huge forces involved in this crash
18:07so the airbags have deployed
18:09Bob has been joined by colleague Ritchie
18:13look at that
18:15you think how strong that is
18:18oh yeah
18:19it's just been folded
18:21but could other parts of the car
18:37reveal even more about the impact
18:39that's the front door is it
18:42ah right
18:42watch yourself
18:46alright
18:46that's just ripped
18:49the A-pillar there look
18:51look at that
18:52yeah
18:58you know that's your wing mirror basically
19:05you would have the frame
19:07which is obviously all this
19:09it's all gnarled and squashed and pushed
19:13and forced to the rear of the vehicle
19:15this is the
19:17this part here would be the
19:18the end of the door
19:20obviously the
19:21the frame that contains the glass
19:23the actual
19:24glass of the passenger door
19:26and then between the doors
19:28then inside internally in the vehicle
19:30you would have
19:31the B-pillar
19:32you know the point of a vehicle
19:36you've got your A-pillar and your B-pillar
19:37it's the strength of the car
19:39and you know if the car rolls
19:41these are supposed to stop the roof coming
19:43compressing in
19:43you know to give that cabin protection
19:46I've never seen something like that happen
19:49in terms of the B-pillar being pulled away from the chassis of the car
19:52I bet it was a hell of a noise when that happened
19:56but to understand how the impact damage was caused
20:08focus now turns to this lorry
20:14which is parked in the lay-by
20:17I mean it's gone a fair way under
20:24if you look where the bumper is
20:27I mean that's how far the vehicle's gone underneath
20:29there's not a lot of room under there is it
20:35and the vehicles managed to get under there
20:38there's clear evidence of where the vehicles have made contact
20:44but analysis of the damage reveals more about the movement of the car
20:49during the collision
20:51the vehicle's gone into the
20:53under the truck that way
20:54so the marks are lateral
20:56so they're almost running parallel with the vehicle
20:58so indicating that when the vehicle is then
21:00entered underneath the truck
21:02it's probably almost in line with it
21:05it's not coming in at an angle
21:06can't go any further because of the wheel
21:09but then when it's exited
21:13it's actually exited at an angle
21:15so it's come back out rebounded
21:17which is that mark there
21:18take some bending as well
21:24the actual vehicle coming together with the truck itself is all on the passenger side
21:40it's highly concentrated here
21:42the corner of the truck is actually intruded inside the vehicle
21:48even though the airbag's gone off
21:52and I think something of that magnitude
21:55an airbag is not really going to help
21:57I don't think
21:57it's quite horrific actually
21:59it's scratching and stuff through here
22:11but it's scratching everywhere
22:14in this leeway
22:15but is there anything on the road surface
22:18to reveal the driver's actions
22:20in the lead up to the crash
22:22there's no sign of emergency breaking
22:25I think if he knew what he was doing
22:28it'd be more of a reaction than that wouldn't it
22:31so can they make sense of the few marks
22:34that they have found
22:36that's the back wheel coming in there isn't it
22:40that's got to be where it's getting crushed underneath
22:42it's just compressing
22:43you've got those gouges there haven't you
22:45yeah
22:46so they go that way aren't they
22:47yeah
22:48yeah
22:48as it's coming in
22:55and then starts to rotate
22:57that's the rear near side
22:58compressing
22:59and then it gets to
22:59it gets to that
23:00gets to that point
23:01and then
23:02whoosh
23:02whoosh
23:03he was in you was he when
23:12yeah
23:12you think he's on his break
23:15it's like you're minding his own business really
23:17I mean he's he's close to the curb
23:19he's not out in the carriageway
23:20he's doing everything legal isn't he
23:23yeah
23:23would this be recorded
23:26is it one on the other side
23:27but this lorry could deliver some valuable evidence
23:31would there be a rear camera
23:35gotta be isn't it
23:36you've got a rear camera on you as well
23:39we're looking at this camera thinking
23:43if that's recording then that would have captured everything
23:46that's our golden ticket really
23:48the vehicle is parked up
24:00the driver is sat in the cab
24:01and almost out of nowhere
24:04he's felt a collision on his vehicle
24:06causing the vehicle to move
24:12shake
24:12so if they're all bound to send it forward
24:16yeah
24:16that's looking back down the vehicle
24:23back down it but it should be
24:25inverted yeah the other way around
24:27if you look at the rear view
24:31you could see that it was just a slight drift of the vehicle
24:44into the lay-by
24:46the significant damage to the car
24:51was concentrated on the passenger side
24:53as the car disappears from view
24:58and then I play
25:00it's picked up by another camera
25:04see the airbag's gone off
25:12driver's airbag
25:13the leading edge of the roof line
25:15has started to deform
25:17and also the bonnet is starting to lift
25:18and then it kind of hooks it in doesn't it
25:21and now it's starting to rotate
25:23the tyre comes off the rim
25:29doesn't it
25:30it's literally compressed
25:32as much as it can be there isn't it
25:33and then
25:34and reforms
25:35and then reforms
25:36and they still need to know more
25:46about the actions of the driver
25:48so there's no marks at the scene
25:51to suggest the vehicles break in
25:52but what we can do
25:54is look at the brake light bulbs
25:55any distortion to the filament
25:59of tungsten light bulbs
26:00can show if they were on
26:02at the time of a crash
26:03as seen in examples here
26:07from a previous investigation
26:08so that's a normal filament
26:12and that's a filament that's been on
26:15the filament gets really hot
26:18when it's illuminated
26:19becomes ductile
26:21and then the shock of the impact
26:23causes it to stretch
26:24and retract
26:25we examined the brake lights
26:31of the citron
26:32there was no deformation
26:34in the filament
26:34which indicated to us
26:38that the brake lights
26:39were not activated
26:40at the time of the collision
26:41so if the driver wasn't braking
26:45did he react in any way
26:48we quite clearly see
26:51there's a man driving
26:52there's his hand on the bottom of the wheel
26:54if your hands are on the steering wheel
26:59you're going to steer first
27:02before your foot comes off the throttle
27:04to hit the brake pedal
27:05just as the vehicle's connected
27:08you could see
27:10just looking at the hand movement
27:12on the driver
27:13that his right hand is pulled down
27:15there's a slight deviation back out
27:18but the very very last
27:20kind of couple of milliseconds really
27:26you know this input here
27:29out to the back out to the road
27:31if this hadn't happened
27:33it would have gone straight through here
27:35yes
27:36straight through where she sat
27:37she's centimetres away
27:43from taking the full brunt
27:44of that impact
27:44into the rear of the truck
27:45that doesn't really bear thinking about
27:47the driver said
27:51he'd taken his eyes off the road
27:53for a second
27:54as he looked across
27:55at directions on a phone
27:56that the passenger was holding
27:58he's probably just
28:01brought the steering down to his left
28:03because of the movement
28:04of the shoulders
28:05and looking down
28:06and as a result
28:07has just caused that slight drift
28:09the 52 year old man
28:11admitted driving
28:12without due care and attention
28:14he was fined
28:16and banned from driving
28:18for six months
28:19just to have that
28:21slight steered input
28:22has probably saved the life
28:25of the front seat passenger
28:26albeit she has sustained
28:31significant injuries
28:32she's very very very fortunate
28:36as she took her side
28:39and the other side
28:39is that she knows
28:40how to do her
28:41what is the Maya
28:41the behind the wind
28:42is that she's very very
28:43a bit surprised
28:43and that she means
28:45that she's gone
28:45and that she's as much
28:46as it is
28:46and that she knows
28:47as her side
28:48has been
28:48the time
28:49and that she's
28:49the way
28:50the way
28:50the way
28:51is that she knows
28:52she's going to be
28:52the way
28:53there's no fault
28:53there's no fault
28:54You
