00:00As we continue to talk about the impacts across the Northeast.
00:03You know, we had a lot of wind, but we also had some rain across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast.
00:08And for many in the Northeast, the rain was needed.
00:12Now, still very murky in Seaside Heights right now.
00:17I guess the question is, moving forward, is this rain going to help with the drought conditions that have persisted in the Northeast for the last few weeks?
00:24And we know someone who has that answer.
00:26Joining me right now is AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist John Porter.
00:29And as we were talking about, you know, certainly the storm came with a lot of impacts.
00:33And we will just need my graphics behind John Porter.
00:37Came with a lot of impacts, but it also came with beneficial rain.
00:41And with the tropics being a little bit quiet as of recent, we haven't had much rain into the Southeast and the Northeast.
00:48And we are talking to Chief Meteorologist John Porter right now.
00:52Good morning.
00:52That's right.
00:53We did have rainfall, which was beneficial in some areas.
00:56It was too fast, too furious, and it resulted in flooding in other areas.
01:01But we have been dealing with a drought situation here across parts of the Northeast and the Ohio Valley.
01:08We'll talk more about that in a minute.
01:09And also into the Southeast, particularly across the interior portions of the Carolinas.
01:15Now, let's take a look at where we got the rainfall over the last 72 hours.
01:19And notice that some of the areas where it was most needed got a bit of rainfall.
01:24There were heavier amounts across portions of the Carolina coast where there were reports of South Carolina coastline where there were reports of more than 10 inches in a few locations.
01:34But so this was beneficial, especially in the interior, though the heaviest rain was confined to the coastline where there was some significant flooding in some areas.
01:43I mean, you could even say a repeat line there about the Northeast as well, where you take a look at the drought monitor.
01:49And we unfortunately have been building the areas of that extreme drought back across, say, states like Vermont, New Hampshire and into Maine.
01:56It's been a very serious drought, as you mentioned, across especially northern New England, down toward parts of western Pennsylvania, through portions of the Ohio Valley, where you look on the drought monitor here.
02:10We're talking about a severe to extreme drought in some of these areas.
02:14So the rainfall was very needed.
02:16The problem was that's not where the rain fell.
02:19It was all confined to the coastline in this particular scenario.
02:23In fact, there was perhaps a half inch of rain in some spots across the Green and White Mountains with the upper level support crossing through the area.
02:33But aside from that, notice in much of the interior areas where it was needed most, very little rainfall, while the very beneficial rainfall occurred across closer to the coastline,
02:44where there were reports of over six inches in some parts of southeastern New England, especially out toward the Cape,
02:49two or three or four inches in some spots across portions of Rhode Island, and two to four inches of rain as AccuWeather accurately forecast as well down the Jersey coast.
02:58So the story here once again, Ari, was where the rain was most needed in the interior, that's not where it happened.
03:05It happened along the coastline.
03:07And I'm sure the coast is going to be excited to talk about the pattern in the short term here, as we're going to be seeing much drier weather.
03:14Well, in the short term, we're drying it out here with a risk for little to no rainfall over the time period from Wednesday to Friday across much of the central and eastern United States.
03:25A big area of high pressure anchored in control, and that's going to promote that rain-free weather, so an opportunity to dry out along the coastline.
03:33But still in the interior where that rain is needed, doesn't look like we'll be dealing with that through Wednesday to Friday time period.
03:41But there is some good news after that.
03:43Yeah, and that's what future rainfall shows here, as you see the green fill back in the map.
03:48And, John, I know this is something our long-range team was focusing on as well.
03:51That's right.
03:52I was talking with our lead long-range expert, Paul Passlock, this morning.
03:55He mentioned he thought there could be a little bit more moisture return with this next storm system from the weekend into early next week,
04:02from the central part of the U.S. to the east coast, because there can be a little bit more gulf moisture that's drawn northward.
04:08So that's helpful that some modest but helpful rains can occur from the central U.S. to the interior northeast where it's needed.
04:17And it does look like Paul and his team think that as we head later into October and November,
04:21there can be more drought relief, especially across the northeast and eventually with time across the central U.S. as well.
04:28All right.
04:28That is good news.
04:29Zach here, the chief meteorologist, John Porter.
