03:02I think if you're fat, you're okay with calling yourself fat
03:06But if you do that, it's everyone else who's like
03:08No, don't say that
03:10No, you're not fat
03:12And you probably really are
03:14Or they say, no, no, but you're pretty
03:16And it's like, I didn't say I was ugly
03:18Hang on a minute
03:20I know I'm fat
03:22I have a mirror
03:23But yeah, people try and sort of take it away from you
03:26Because they find it offensive themselves, I think
03:29Interesting
03:29What about you, Donna?
03:31How do you feel about the term fat?
03:33I identify as fat, have always been the fat kid
03:36The fat person always around
03:38It's only in very recent times in this journey of health
03:41That I've become less fat, I suppose
03:45Yeah
03:46And more healthy
03:46But it takes your brain a long time to catch up to that
03:49And I still feel like I can still say I'm fat
03:52Because that's how I've always been
03:54Yeah
03:55Do you feel like you get treated differently
03:57Depending on what size you are?
03:58Yeah, definitely
03:59I think even just in the shops
04:01Even just going down to the shops and buying things
04:03Like whatever it might be
04:04People will just, they look at you
04:06Or they don't look at you
04:07I think you're also different if you're thinner as well
04:10And so if you are more confident
04:12Then you get treated better because you have that confidence
04:15Whereas when you're a bit bigger
04:17Sometimes you just want to like hide in the corner
04:18Were you big as a kid?
04:20Yeah
04:20I pretty much gained 10 kilos with every age
04:23Right
04:23That I turn
04:24Okay
04:24So at 8 I was 80, 9, 90
04:27By the time I was 10 I was 100 kilos
04:29And then as a teenager I got up to about 120, 130
04:33You know, 15, 16 years old
04:35So always the fat kid
04:38So yeah, I mean being fat is just something that I've always been used to
04:42I don't really know myself not fat
04:44Is there a difference between how fat was seen inside your house versus the outside world?
04:49Oh, 100%
04:50I'm very lucky that from a young age fatness wasn't this evil
04:53Fatness was just who we are
04:55It was a beautiful truth
04:56Like we just loved eating food
04:57We loved eating rice
04:58It's very Filipino of us
04:59And it was only really until like I guess I reached teenage age
05:05Where the, you know, external pressures really set in
05:10The social media
05:11Like I blossomed as Snapchat blossomed and Instagram blossomed
05:14But even then I think it changes everything when your roots are filled with love
05:20Filled with this appreciation for a plumpness and a gorgeous chubbiness
05:26I've come from a family where it was very normal to comment on how big you are
05:31And how big you're getting
05:33And my size was something that was always spoken about
05:36Every time you would see someone that you haven't seen for a while
05:39It was always, oh wow, you know, you've put on a lot of weight
05:41Or look how big you are
05:42And so, yeah, I come from a background where you do kind of pick at people
05:49Other people's expectations is a really interesting component to us
05:52Because Joanna, you used to be an Olympic swimmer
05:54You've won gold at the Commonwealth Games
05:56Yeah
05:56Are people's expectations of your body different because of that background as an athlete?
06:01Oh, definitely
06:02And I think my body was a tool
06:04So it was heavily commoditised
06:06We were poked, prodded, weighed, measured
06:08You're constantly thinking about your body
06:10So when that body started gaining weight
06:13Yeah, the expectations around me from people
06:17It was very hard to deal with
06:19Because they couldn't understand how I could be an Olympian and be fat
06:22And yeah, that was quite difficult
06:25Does anyone ever felt discriminated against for being fat?
06:30Yeah, for sure
06:31At one point I was trying to buy activewear
06:33Because they tell you
06:34I was bigger than I am now
06:36So probably at least 20 kilos heavier
06:38And they told me I needed to get active
06:41So I went to buy activewear
06:43Walked in
06:44And one of the girls who was the assistant in the store
06:48Said, we don't sell anything in your size
06:51And that was devastating
06:53So I do a lot of work
06:55To try and help people
06:56Feel comfortable in the body that they have
06:59And to be able to enjoy the body that they have
07:02I've done things like a Bourke Street Mall walk in my lingerie
07:07To try and demonstrate to others
07:13That this is what bodies look like
07:15This is what bodies really look like
07:16And the reaction from the crowd was amazing
07:20Men cheering
07:21No one called us fat
07:23No one was horrible
07:24I've really done quite a few things
07:27To try and make sure that I feel comfortable in my body as well
07:30Wow
07:31Can I ask about dating and relationships?
07:34Like what is it like dating at a bigger size?
07:36Yeah, not great
07:37I would not get as much, you know, swipe rights
07:40On the dating websites and things like that
07:43It's been interesting after losing the weight that I have
07:47The people that are coming out of the woodworks
07:49That I used to speak to in my past
07:51What do you think of those people?
07:53Like what goes through your head?
07:54Come on, be honest
07:54I mean, it's laughable, right?
07:57Because I'm exactly the same person
07:59I'm just carrying 30 kilos less weight
08:01Nothing about me has changed
08:03Except for that
08:04And so yeah, it's laughable
08:06Like if you didn't like me then
08:07You don't deserve me now
08:08Would you judge somebody, Mark
08:09For coming to you and talking to you differently
08:11After you lose weight?
08:14No, I don't think so
08:15No
08:16Because I get it
08:18I understand it
08:19It's more attractive to be thinner
08:20And if they're not attracted to me bigger
08:23I get it
08:24Yeah, I totally get it
08:25I mean, that's not my preference
08:26I don't really care what someone looks like
08:28But I do know that people do care
08:30Mark, you've written a lot about dating whilst a bigger size
08:35And you've actually given like really practical advice over the years
08:39Like what are the sorts of things that you tell people
08:41About being intimate when you're a bigger size?
08:43Well, I think just to like not be afraid to touch
08:46Just get in there
08:47Like they're called love handles for a reason
08:49You've got to love them
08:51You've got to hold on to them
08:52I love you
08:53I love you
08:53That's amazing
08:54That people want to be touched too
08:56Like and it's really difficult
08:58If someone goes to touch you
09:00And then they feel your roles
09:02And then they might concentrate on your roles
09:04Yeah
09:04So it's like giving them that sort of advice too
09:07Like enjoy it and caress it
09:08But don't concentrate on it
09:10Don't think it's a spot that you should be
09:13You know, like
09:13It's not Play-Doh
09:14No, exactly
09:16I'm looking at your face, Mark
09:18I'm trying to work out what's going through your head
09:19Are you rethinking sexual experiences?
09:21What's going on?
09:22Yeah, no, no
09:22I'm just thinking it's okay if you're doing it yourself
09:25Like I think about what I do with my body just for fun
09:28And like I'll be moving a titty over here
09:32In your playground
09:33And dropping my tummy up
09:34Yeah
09:35I don't know
09:35I think if you have a partner that you're comfortable with
09:37And, you know, you share a bedroom with
09:40You might shower together
09:41Get ready together in the bathroom together
09:43Once you've got that level of comfort
09:45I just think, yeah, who cares what I look like
09:47You know what I mean?
09:48Like she's seen me in the worst possible ways
09:50So
09:51The queer male body standard is like next level
09:55It is next level
09:56It is muscular
09:58It's white
09:59It's thin
10:00It's twinkie
10:01Don't Google that
10:02At least not at the table
10:04Not at the table
10:05On your own time
10:06Another time
10:07And I feel like
10:09So when I first entered the dating apps
10:11It was just very clear like
10:13That I was not welcome
10:14There was a lot of like fatphobic comments
10:16There was like random people just sending me like pig emojis
10:19Oh wow
10:19No
10:20Yeah just random
10:21Like on the app
10:22You're so gorgeous
10:23They would send me a pig emoji
10:24And then make sure I saw it
10:26And then delete it
10:27Block me
10:28Get rid of me
10:29I feel like my struggle now
10:32Is that
10:33You know
10:34I feel like
10:34I'm desired
10:35But only in secret
10:37I'm only desired
10:39In the middle of the night
10:40At 2am
10:41I'm not
10:42I don't want to be
10:42They don't want to be seen with me
10:44Out for a coffee
10:45Do you feel like you've been fetishised?
10:47Oh 100%
10:48Some people are comfortable
10:49With being fetishised
10:50Some aren't
10:51For me
10:52It's like
10:52If a person is willing to see me
10:54As a human being first
10:55And foremost
10:56If they're able to respect me
10:57And communicate well
10:59And be an adult
11:00I'm okay with being the object
11:02Of their sexual desire
11:03I definitely know
11:04I've been fetishised
11:05For my boobs
11:06Right
11:07I have bigger boobs
11:08Because I'm a bigger girl
11:09In the workplace
11:10I've had
11:11You know
11:11Men actually
11:13Say things inappropriately
11:14And things like that
11:15So I know that
11:16Those sort of things happen
11:17Has anyone else ever felt
11:19Like they've been fetishised
11:20As a bigger person?
11:22No
11:22I wish
11:22Only fans
11:27Yeah
11:28Yeah
11:29Yeah no
11:29Does anyone else ever feel judged
11:32For eating in public?
11:34Yes
11:34All the time
11:35And you know
11:38You could be eating
11:38The same food
11:40As your friend
11:41Who's thin
11:41And you get the looks
11:42Or you get
11:43You know
11:43It's not overt
11:45But you can notice it
11:47You can see when it's happening
11:49It's really bad
11:51If you're in a shopping centre
11:52Or something like that
11:52And you haven't eaten
11:53Pretty much all day
11:55You're starving
11:55But if you're alone
11:57And you're at a food court
11:58And you're eating
11:59It looks really bad
12:00Yeah
12:01All of that leads us
12:02To the wonderful world
12:02Of regret and self-flagellation
12:04Diets
12:06The first diet book
12:11In the world
12:12Came out in the 50s
12:13The 1550s
12:15That is
12:15It is
12:16The Arts of Living Long
12:18By Italian
12:18Luigi Conaro
12:20Who suggested
12:21That each day
12:21You just needed
12:22300 grams of food
12:23And
12:24Three glasses of wine
12:26Then in 1862
12:28A retired London undertaker
12:30By the name
12:30Of William Banting
12:32Popularised
12:33Was the first
12:33Low-carb diet
12:35It was so popular
12:36That bant
12:37Became slang
12:38For dieting
12:39As in
12:39Do you bant
12:40Good sir
12:41Since then
12:42The battle of the bold
12:43Has become a battle
12:44For big business
12:45Today
12:46The global weight loss
12:47Industry
12:48Is worth over
12:48450 billion dollars
12:51A year
12:51Vast
12:53Global empires
12:54Have been created
12:54Telling us
12:55We could
12:56Sweat it out
12:57Starve it out
12:59Hell
12:59Some of us
13:00Even tried to pray it out
13:01I'm teaching people
13:02How to transfer
13:03A relationship
13:04With the refrigerator
13:06To a relationship
13:08With God
13:09Food is a parasitic leech
13:10It's a false god
13:13Speaking of false gods
13:15A report into
13:16Australia's weight loss
13:17Industry
13:18Has found evidence
13:19Of deceptive practices
13:20And risks
13:21To consumer safety
13:2380% of dieters
13:25Enrolled in centres
13:26Failed to lose weight
13:27Or keep it down
13:28By the time
13:28We got to the 1990s
13:30Some new ideas
13:31Slowly began to emerge
13:33In contrast to the
13:34Widely held belief
13:35That obesity is caused
13:37By gluttony and sloth
13:38There is now a recognition
13:40That it's not simply
13:41Related to lifestyle
13:42And that medical intervention
13:44Is needed to bring
13:45Obesity under control
13:47But diets
13:48Even the batshit ones
13:50Never really went away
13:52So you're probably wondering
13:55What we've put in front of you
13:57This is diet bingo
14:00Oh no
14:01We've gone back
14:03Over the turgid history
14:06Of diets
14:06To take you through them
14:09One by one
14:09Donna
14:10Oh yeah
14:15This brings back memories
14:18From a very long time ago
14:20Of something in the realms
14:22Of a kickstart cabbage diet
14:24Where you made some form
14:25Of vegetable soup
14:26That included a lot of cabbage
14:28And you could eat as much
14:29As you wanted
14:29I think the terms of it
14:31Was like for seven days
14:32And they claimed
14:33You could lose something
14:34Like five kilos
14:34And all you had to do
14:36Was eat that three times a day
14:37How were your farts?
14:39I'm sure they were awful
14:42Atomic
14:43Atomic
14:43So the cabbage soup diet
14:46It goes back to the 1950s
14:47But it became really popular
14:48In the 1980s
14:49And yes
14:50The idea is that
14:50You just eat cabbage
14:52And cabbage based foods
14:53Although eventually
14:54You just stop eating altogether
14:55Because all you have to eat
14:56Is cabbage
14:57Yes
14:58Mark
14:59Do you want to go next?
15:03Oh glasses
15:04X-ray vision goggles
15:06This was the vision diet
15:10And the idea is
15:11If you wore that
15:13You would only eat
15:13Colourful vegetables
15:15And fruit
15:16And you wouldn't eat
15:17Brown fried food
15:18It's still appealing
15:19Which brings us to
15:24Joanna
15:25Very gently remove your cloche
15:27Now I can get behind this
15:32So this is the 1977
15:34Australian Vogue
15:35Champagne diet
15:36Yep
15:37My gosh
15:38I'm going to read it out to you
15:39So basically
15:39A couple of eggs
15:41Some black coffee
15:42Four glasses of champagne
15:44And for dessert
15:45A glass of brandy
15:47And I'm not going to lie
15:48Of all the diets
15:49This one I can get down with
15:50I feel like I do this
15:51On a weekend
15:52Already
15:52But they actually published this
15:55In Vogue in 1977
15:56It's a very nice glass
15:58Fragrant on the bouquet
15:59My turn
16:01Okay
16:02Oh
16:05Is this baby food
16:07It is baby food
16:08Can I have some
16:09Of course
16:09Is that okay
16:10I haven't had baby food
16:11Since I was a baby
16:12So last year
16:13Since last year
16:16Yeah that's bland as shit
16:19I can see a baby loving this
16:22Not me
16:23Sorry
16:23I think that's kind of the point
16:24Yeah
16:25So the idea is
16:26You would replace a few meals
16:28With baby food
16:29It goes back a while
16:30But quite recently
16:31It became quite popular
16:32In Hollywood circles
16:33Apparently
16:33Oh wow
16:34Well that brings us to you
16:37Lucky last
16:38Just eating apples
16:43For every meal
16:46Did you do that?
16:47Yes
16:48Done that
16:49Just apples
16:50But you can have them
16:52Any way you wanted
16:53So you could stew them
16:54You could do other things
16:55With them
16:56But
16:56It's a lot of apples
16:58How many years of your life
17:00Do you reckon you lost to dieting?
17:02Well
17:02Probably from when I was about
17:0420
17:05To
17:05I was about
17:0645
17:07So 25 years
17:08But I was
17:10Bulimic as well
17:11Trying to lose weight
17:13Because that's how society
17:14Wanted me to be
17:15When you think about the years
17:17That you spent
17:18Doing some of this stuff
17:19How do you look back
17:20On that time?
17:22That it was wasted
17:22Because I should have just been
17:24Enjoying life
17:24Participating in life
17:26I don't have photos of me
17:27With my kids
17:28When they were littler
17:29Because
17:30I felt too fat
17:31To be in the photos
17:32Too big
17:33And back then
17:34I didn't like myself
17:35So it
17:36I feel
17:37You know
17:38That society's value
17:40On how we look
17:41And the fatness
17:42That we have
17:43Can
17:44Ruin people's lives
17:45You're a personal trainer now
17:47Right?
17:47I am a personal trainer
17:48So what advice
17:49Do you give clients
17:50About diet?
17:51I personally
17:53Don't think
17:53You need to give up
17:54Any food
17:55I think it's
17:56More about the moderation
17:57And just
17:58You know
17:59Today I felt like a macaroon
18:01And I had a macaroon
18:02And that was enough
18:03But you know
18:03If I wanted
18:04Two more
18:04I would have them
18:05And those sort of things
18:06So it's more about
18:07The movement
18:08And things
18:08That I concentrate on
18:10And that's been
18:11Sort of that incidental way
18:12That they lose the weight
18:13What sort of
18:14Reactions
18:15Do you get
18:16Okay
18:17Let's
18:18No no
18:18The elephant in the room
18:19Yeah okay
18:19I'm a fat personal trainer
18:21Who goes into
18:21Group train
18:22People don't think
18:24I'm there to run the class
18:25They think I'm another participant
18:27Because I'm
18:28I don't fit the mould
18:29I don't have abs
18:30Being fat
18:31Doesn't mean that I'm not fit
18:32And I think we need
18:33To get beyond
18:34The idea of the gym
18:36As somewhere to
18:36Be thin
18:37You know
18:38The gym is for you
18:39To get strong
18:40It's to get healthy
18:40It's great for your mental health
18:42It's great to have fun
18:43It's to meet friends
18:44I think
18:45Just labelling gym
18:46As somewhere that we go
18:47To get thin
18:48Is really problematic
18:48Yeah
18:49Mark
18:50This collection
18:52Of diets
18:54Is on the extreme end
18:55But
18:55We do have a culture
18:57Where people do keep
18:57Coming back to dieting
18:59Why
19:00Why do you think
19:00There is that draw
19:01I think because
19:03People gain their weight
19:04Back very easily
19:06I think that the body
19:07I think once you've
19:09Been big
19:10We're like a balloon
19:11I think it just
19:11Bounces back
19:12And I know that
19:13I've yo-yo dieted
19:14My whole life as well
19:15And I've dropped
19:17Big lots of weight
19:18Multiple times
19:19It could be 30 kilos
19:2040 kilos
19:21At one point
19:22I lost 50 kilos
19:23But it always comes back
19:25And usually
19:26A lot more
19:27When I was about 21
19:29I had a lap band
19:30Because that was
19:32What the biggest
19:33Weight loss surgery
19:34Was back then
19:34And I had the band
19:36In there for about
19:3710 years
19:38Ended up with a whole
19:39Bunch of complications
19:40And then from that
19:42It eventuated into
19:44Me getting a gastric bypass
19:46What was the impact
19:47On your actual body
19:48Like did it work
19:49I am eight months
19:51Post surgery
19:52So it's still pretty
19:54Fresh for me
19:54And I'm already down
19:57Something like 42 kilos
19:58So it does work
20:00This to me
20:02Feels like the most
20:03Sustainable thing
20:04That I've ever had
20:04In my life
20:05In terms of dieting
20:06And you know
20:07The way I eat
20:08Because I feel like
20:10I can still eat
20:11And yeah
20:13It's a lot less
20:14And I'm more conscious
20:15Of what I put in my body
20:16Because there's not
20:17Much space in there
20:18So I have to be more
20:18Aware of what I eat
20:20Limited real estate
20:21Yeah exactly
20:22Yeah yeah yeah
20:24So you just have to
20:24Make better choices
20:25I just
20:26I mean I'm 35 now
20:27I probably didn't even know
20:28That I would even get to 35
20:30But now that I am
20:32In my 30s
20:34And I've got kids
20:35And I'm a lot healthier
20:37I am kind of worried
20:39About my lifespan
20:40So now my mind
20:41Has kind of changed
20:42And I'm like
20:42Hmm
20:43Maybe I should make
20:44Better choices
20:44So that I am here
20:45For a longer time
20:46Because yeah
20:48I think I've got people
20:49Now who want me around
20:50For that amount of time
20:51After the break
20:54I make the questionable
20:55Decision to let cameras
20:56Film me at a doctor's
20:57Appointment
20:58I've grown up
20:59Sort of with an
21:00Expanding contracting
21:01Body
21:02And I've
21:03At no point have I
21:04Actually spoken to a doctor
21:04About it
21:05Really
21:06Yeah
21:07And we dive belly first
21:09Into the divisive world
21:10Of weight loss drugs
21:11We don't know
21:12The long term effects
21:13Of these drugs
21:14But we do know
21:15The long term effects
21:16Of obesity
21:16And they are
21:17Catastrophic
21:18Sounds like a rich person's drug
21:20Like cocaine
21:21I don't think it's cheating
21:22And I don't think
21:23It's a magic cure
21:24If you're overweight
21:30Or obese
21:31You're in a trap
21:33We were raised in a trap
21:35These drugs are a trap door
21:37They are a risky
21:38Rusty trap door
21:39Some of us should go through them
21:41Some of them shouldn't
21:42In my view
21:43But they give us
21:44More options than we had before
21:46And everyone who's
21:47Overweight or obese
21:48I think should take a moment
21:49To really think deeply
21:51About the options
21:52These drugs open up
21:53British author
21:55Johan Hari
21:56Is a bit like
21:57The James Bond
21:57Of health issues
21:58He takes a subject
21:59Like depression
22:01Or addiction
22:01And then he flies around the world
22:03To untangle the web
22:04Of underlying causes
22:06Now I first met him
22:07About a decade ago
22:08And well
22:10We both looked
22:11A little different
22:12Johan Hari
22:13Thanks for talking to us
22:14Oh thank you very much
22:15His most recent target
22:17Is obesity
22:17And our relationship
22:19With food
22:19And this time
22:20It's personal
22:22You write really
22:23Viscerally
22:23About one particular
22:25Food stuff
22:26I can see
22:28Where you're going
22:29Oh
22:31The magic
22:32The dream
22:33Okay firstly
22:35Describe for me
22:35What we're looking at here
22:37Heaven
22:39Well
22:40So
22:41When we first met
22:42Nine years ago
22:43This would have looked
22:44Like heaven to me
22:45Now I know
22:46What we're looking at
22:47Is
22:48Grotesque jokes
22:50Of like
22:51Breaded filth
22:52Basically
22:53But
22:54This would have been
22:55My staple diet
22:56Basically from the age of
22:57Three
22:57To the age of
22:5844
22:59It's so weird
23:00I literally don't want it now
23:02It's the weirdest
23:03Thing
23:03So
23:04What's changed
23:05For Johan
23:06Well for the past
23:07Couple of years
23:07He has been injecting
23:08Himself with
23:09Ozempic
23:10A prescription drug
23:11Only approved in Australia
23:12For the treatment of diabetes
23:14But which
23:15Johan and many others
23:17Around the world
23:17Have been taking
23:18Off label
23:19For weight loss
23:20It's a complex story
23:21About these drugs
23:21But this is not a fan
23:22This is not a gimmick
23:23There's been a staggering
23:24Scientific breakthrough
23:26Ozempic
23:27Wagovi
23:28Monjaru
23:29Siksenda
23:29They're all drugs
23:31That have been around
23:31For about 20 years
23:32To treat obesity
23:33And diabetes
23:34They're what's known
23:35As GLP-1 agonists
23:37So GLP-1 is a naturally
23:39Occurring hormone
23:39In the body
23:40Think of it as being
23:41Part of your body's
23:42Email network
23:43For managing food
23:44And energy
23:44When you eat
23:45Your gut produces
23:46GLP-1
23:47Which starts firing off
23:48Emails to your brain
23:49Telling you
23:50That you're getting full
23:51But some people
23:52Have problems
23:52With their GLP-1 signal
23:54It's like emails
23:55Are getting stuck
23:56In the outbox
23:57Or going straight to spam
23:58So the message
23:59Never gets to your brain
24:00And you stay hungry
24:01That's where the GLP-1
24:02Drugs come in
24:03They mimic the
24:04Naturally occurring hormone
24:05But turbocharge the signal
24:07So then the emails
24:08Start flowing to your brain
24:09So you know when to stop eating
24:11And can control your food cravings
24:13At other times
24:14As one of the scientists
24:15Who works on these drugs
24:16Put it to me
24:17We've cracked the code
24:19Of what controls human appetite
24:21Actually I wonder
24:22If we should put this away
24:22I knew you'd change your mind
24:25I've cracked
24:26Get it away from me
24:27As I sit in front of you
24:28Right now
24:29I am classified as obese
24:31In fact I actually
24:32Have the same BMI
24:32As you had
24:33When you decided
24:34To start to go on these drugs
24:35What would you say
24:37To a person in my position
24:38Who's weighing up the choice
24:39Well the first thing I would say
24:40Is as you know
24:41I'm not a doctor
24:42So people should talk
24:42To their doctors
24:43And they should weigh that much
24:44More heavily than anything
24:45They take from me
24:46But we don't know
24:47The long term effects
24:48Of these drugs
24:49But we do know
24:50The long term effects
24:51Of obesity
24:51And they are catastrophic
24:53So I've had a little think
24:55About what Johan Hari said
24:57And I've decided
24:57To take his advice
24:58And go talk to some actual doctors
24:59Not just to weigh up the risks
25:01But also the potential rewards
25:02Of this new generation
25:04Of weight loss drugs
25:05Just background for me
25:09I'm a fat kid
25:11Like I was
25:12I've been big
25:13My entire life
25:15And I've grown up
25:17Sort of with an expanding
25:18Contracting body
25:20And I've
25:20At no point have I
25:21Actually spoken to a doctor
25:22About it
25:23Really?
25:24Yeah
25:24So what have you been doing then
25:26When you say expanding contracting
25:28You've clearly
25:29You're aware
25:30Oh yeah
25:31Yeah
25:31No so
25:32Usually if I go down
25:33It's because of like
25:34Like lots and lots
25:35And lots of exercise
25:36And then we had kids
25:37And that was just like
25:38Not a thing you could do
25:39And only recently
25:43Have I gotten into like
25:44Tracking every single thing
25:46That goes inside
25:47My mouth
25:49Since I started with that
25:50I've lost about
25:50Eight or nine kilos
25:52Since June
25:53What's your motivator here?
25:54I turn 40 this year right
25:56Okay
25:57So it's probably the first time
25:59I've really considered
25:59What the next 40 years
26:02Of my life
26:03Are going to look like
26:03Yeah
26:03You know it was at this point
26:04That you know
26:05My parents started
26:06Getting cancers
26:07And things like that
26:08And so there's a sort of
26:09Defensive position
26:10I want to take
26:11Where I'm like
26:12I want to put myself
26:12In good stead for that
26:13Okay
26:14But if I'm being honest
26:16It's the biggest driver for me
26:17Is the body I look at
26:18In the mirror in the morning
26:19Okay
26:19But there's two aspects here
26:21Yeah
26:21And I don't think
26:22We should ignore
26:23Yeah
26:23The fact that you want to feel good
26:25When you look in the mirror
26:26Yeah
26:26Because I'm a little bit competitive
26:29I do tend to weigh myself
26:30Most days
26:32Pretty much every day
26:33And I'm looking for
26:35Control
26:36Decline
26:38And if
26:38And I
26:39And you know
26:39If I'm being really honest
26:40With you
26:40If I don't see decline
26:41Week on week
26:41I'm fucking angry
26:42When you're a fat kid
26:44It never leaves you
26:46You know
26:46Even if I'm in really good shape
26:48You still mentally feel like
26:51The fat kid
26:51And I feel like
26:52That's the thing
26:52That I'm probably
26:54Fixated on
26:54More than anything
26:55Have you ever spoken
26:56To anyone about this
26:57Like a psychologist
26:58No I haven't actually
27:00No
27:00So this is all
27:02So this is all very
27:03It's all intertwined
27:05Well it is
27:06Yeah
27:06Given
27:07Everything you know
27:09About me
27:10And my BMI
27:10Do you think
27:12Drugs like Ozempic
27:14Are something I should consider
27:15So you would qualify
27:17Certainly
27:18Qualify as in
27:21Would it be
27:22Indicated to put it
27:23On the platter of options
27:25Sure
27:25These meds
27:27These meds that you're
27:27Describing
27:27Are really effective
27:30For a lot of people
27:31And you know
27:33Most of the stuff
27:34That we're seeing
27:35Suggests that they're
27:36Quite safe
27:36There are side effects
27:37Yeah
27:37Norsia
27:38You know people can feel
27:39Quite terrible on them
27:40You know constipation
27:41A lot of tummy upset
27:42There could be some
27:44Rarer adverse side effects
27:45To do with the pancreas
27:46But by and large
27:48They appear to be
27:50Quite safe
27:51I might see someone
27:55Who's you know
27:56150-200 kilograms
27:57They start on these
27:58Medications and they
27:59Can lose 80-100 kilograms
28:01So they're still
28:02Very big people
28:03But suddenly they can
28:04Come into my office
28:05They're smiling
28:06They can breathe
28:07One man celebrated
28:09The fact that he
28:10Could put his seatbelt on
28:11So there's the medical
28:12Setting where people
28:13Are very unwell
28:14And you're getting
28:14Massive wins
28:15And then there's the
28:16Broader sense
28:17Where we're using them
28:18To I guess be healthier
28:21In general
28:21Although that's a bit
28:22More of a grey area
28:23If you're a completely
28:24Healthy person
28:25That has no specific
28:27Family history
28:27And there's a lot of
28:28Nutrition and physical
28:29Activity gains to be made
28:30Probably you should pause
28:32And focus on those
28:33Other things first
28:34I don't think I'd want
28:35To be on these drugs
28:35If I didn't need to be
28:36On them
28:37Because they do have
28:38Side effects
28:39They're not you know
28:39And there are potential
28:41Short and long term
28:42Side effects
28:42That we don't fully understand
28:44There's one risk
28:46That really played out
28:46For me in particular
28:47But I wish I had
28:50Been warned about
28:50The pattern of my eating
28:53So I wasn't someone
28:54Who like loved food
28:55And craved the taste
28:56And the flavour
28:56I stuffed myself
28:59To calm myself down
29:00And when I started
29:02Taking a Zen pick
29:03I couldn't do that
29:04Being deprived of that
29:06Underlying psychological
29:07Coping mechanism
29:08Was really hard actually
29:10It was really difficult
29:11So if I was going
29:13To write you a map
29:14Yeah
29:15And a platter of options
29:16You can't
29:17Underestimate the power
29:20Of the lifestyle interventions
29:21But they're hard
29:22To implement
29:23Which is why
29:24I would get in
29:27Experts
29:29Exercise physiologists
29:31Dietitians
29:32But I do think
29:35If
29:35We were even going
29:37To chat about
29:38Medication options
29:39It would have to be
29:40With a
29:42KVET of
29:43With a psychologist
29:44Who specialises
29:45In this area
29:46And I can arrange
29:47All of it
29:47But the reason
29:49Is Mark
29:50That I
29:51Think there's a lot
29:53Of unexplored stuff here
29:54You've told me
29:54You've never spoken
29:55To anybody about it
29:56And there are some
29:57Things that you've
29:58Told me
29:59That make me
30:00Slightly concerned
30:01And I don't want
30:03To
30:03Perpetuate harm
30:05With your relationship
30:06With your body
30:07Or food
30:08No I'm just like
30:09I'm just like
30:10Suddenly realizing
30:10I'm too crazy
30:11For OCP
30:12Not my words
30:14Not yours
30:14I know you would
30:15Never say those words
30:16It's okay
30:16And I don't
30:16Look and we can
30:17Consider it
30:18But I just don't
30:18Want to cause more harm
30:19And make sure
30:20You're best supported
30:21That's really what
30:21It's about
30:22Fun fact
30:27I'm technically
30:28Considered obese
30:29And as part of
30:31Doing this
30:32I went to go
30:33See a GP
30:33And it became
30:34Very apparent
30:35In this conversation
30:35That I absolutely
30:36Qualify for
30:37The new weight loss
30:38Drugs
30:38I haven't necessarily
30:40Gone down the pathway
30:40Yet but it was like
30:41Oh okay
30:42I can get this
30:43Now Donna
30:44You're interesting here
30:45Because you were
30:46On some of these
30:47Weight loss drugs
30:47Years before everyone
30:49Is that right?
30:50Yes so I'm in my
30:50Fourth year
30:51Of being on
30:53GLP-1
30:53Weight loss medication
30:55I started in 2021
30:56Before it all
30:58Had a big hype
30:59About it
30:59And yes
31:01I'm still going
31:01I don't think
31:02That at this stage
31:03There will be
31:04A room for me
31:05To stop the medication
31:06As I have just
31:06Become the healthiest
31:07Person I am
31:08And have just
31:09Had to accept
31:10That I needed
31:10Some help
31:10In doing that
31:11So how much
31:12Weight loss
31:12Are we talking about?
31:14So in total
31:14As of today
31:15I've actually
31:16Lost 50 kilos
31:16And in the first
31:18Nine or ten months
31:19I lost 40 of those kilos
31:21I then maintained
31:22Until this year
31:23And I've just dropped
31:24The last ten kilos
31:24In three months
31:25That's huge
31:27A lot of that
31:28Recent weight loss
31:29Will definitely
31:30Be contributed
31:31To the amount
31:32Of steps I've taken
31:33To change my diet
31:34And lifestyle
31:35So as it gets
31:36Further along
31:36I've had to
31:37Incorporate more
31:37Things, more
31:38Exercise
31:39Watching my diet
31:41Even more closely
31:42To help push that
31:44Along
31:44You went off
31:45The drugs
31:46For a period of time
31:47When you went
31:48Off the drugs
31:49What happened
31:49To your body?
31:50So for the time
31:51That I went off
31:52The drugs
31:52Was when I was
31:53Hoping to continue
31:54The lifestyle change
31:55And manage it
31:55On my own
31:56Unfortunately
31:57That wasn't the case
31:58And I did start
31:59To regain
32:00Some of the weight
32:01I ended up
32:02Regaining
32:02About eight kilos
32:03In three months
32:04What's the thing
32:05You most want
32:06People to know
32:07About the journey
32:07That you've been on?
32:09That there is
32:10Help out there
32:10And there's no shame
32:11In taking that
32:12If you need it
32:13Joanna
32:13You've been on
32:15Some of these drugs
32:15As well
32:16How has it changed
32:17Your relationship
32:18With food?
32:19I mean
32:20It's changed
32:21My entire life
32:21It just
32:22It's made
32:23My life so much
32:24Easier
32:24In that I'm not
32:25Constantly panicking
32:26And worrying
32:27And thinking
32:27About food
32:28So I still
32:29Enjoy food
32:30I still eat it
32:31I think it's
32:32Very important
32:32That you maintain
32:33That when you're
32:33Taking one of
32:34These medications
32:35That you're still
32:36Putting food
32:36Into your body
32:37Food still
32:38Excites me
32:39I still
32:39You know
32:39Like going out
32:40To dinner
32:40But it's just
32:42Taken the thought
32:43And all of that
32:44Noise inside of my
32:45Head is gone
32:46So what is
32:47Food noise?
32:48Like what does
32:48That feel like?
32:49It's all
32:50Consuming
32:51Constant thoughts
32:52About food
32:53So thinking about
32:54When your next meal
32:55Is what you're
32:56Going to have
32:56How many calories
32:57You had in the
32:57Morning
32:57So how many calories
32:58You have left
32:58For the day
32:59Should I eat now
33:00Should I eat when I go out
33:01You know
33:02All
33:02It's non-stop
33:03Never ending
33:04Right
33:04Can you relate to that?
33:06Absolutely
33:06To have that
33:07Switched off
33:08And not have to think
33:09About breakfast
33:09Lunch
33:10Dinner meals
33:10And just take them
33:12And like as they come
33:13Pretty much
33:13Is just a phenomenal experience
33:16So you're not a diabetic
33:17I'm not
33:18Which means you've had to pay
33:19Full price for this
33:20Haven't you?
33:21Absolutely
33:21I have paid private price
33:22The whole time
33:23How much money do you reckon
33:24You've spent on these drugs?
33:26I really don't want to think
33:27About that
33:27Okay
33:28Anywhere from
33:29Anywhere from upwards of
33:30$150 a month
33:32To zapatide
33:33Is now $699
33:34For a one month pen
33:36That's a lot
33:38It is a lot
33:38But my health
33:39Has come $180
33:41I was constantly
33:43Being monitored
33:44For high blood pressure
33:45I was pre-diabetic
33:46I just
33:47Yeah
33:48Was very much struggling
33:49And now
33:50All of that has
33:51Basically gone away
33:52Insulin resistance
33:53Is no longer
33:54Affecting me
33:55I'm not pre-diabetic
33:56And I've
33:57Not had to be on
33:58Blood pressure medication
33:59For three years
34:00Wow
34:00Mark
34:01Would you ever consider?
34:03No
34:03Why not?
34:04Sounds like a rich person's drug
34:06Like cocaine
34:07I'm kidding
34:08I'm joking
34:09Well I'm just thinking
34:12You'd want to hope
34:13That you never go broke
34:14Because
34:15The minute you can't
34:17Afford the medication
34:17It's just like
34:18What happens then?
34:20You know
34:20Like what happens
34:21Once you get off
34:21The medication?
34:23For me
34:23I was trying to source
34:24A Zempic
34:25Because I needed it
34:26For diabetes
34:26And couldn't get it
34:27Anywhere
34:28Like
34:28I was like
34:30The crack cocaine person
34:31Going round to
34:32All the pharmacists
34:33Have you got the drug?
34:34And no one had it
34:35So what happens
34:36If all the drugs
34:36Dry up?
34:38Joanna
34:38Do you ever worry
34:39That it's an ongoing
34:39Commitment that you are
34:40Going to be with it
34:41Forever?
34:42I don't worry about it
34:43At all
34:43I think like
34:44Much like any other
34:45Disease
34:45Heart disease
34:46You'd be on
34:47Statins for life
34:49I don't have any
34:50Qualms about it
34:51And I think as well
34:52I did the maths
34:52And worked out
34:53That when I go to
34:54Maintenance on this
34:55Medication
34:55It'll work out
34:56To $70 a week
34:57Which
34:58Was a big takeaway
34:59Right?
35:00Like
35:00And I'm not eating
35:01The takeaways
35:02I'm not eating
35:03As much food
35:03I'm making better choices
35:05So for me
35:05Financially
35:06It also works out
35:07Pending so much less
35:08On food
35:09Yeah
35:09Even just
35:11Like looking into it
35:12Just telling people
35:13That I was looking at it
35:14I got a really
35:15Interesting reaction
35:16From some people
35:16Who were like
35:17Well it's cheating
35:18What do you think
35:19About this idea
35:20That being on
35:21These drugs
35:21Is cheating
35:22Weight loss
35:23Because it's around
35:24Right?
35:25I say
35:25So what?
35:27So what?
35:28Number one
35:28But also
35:29I have pre-diabetes
35:31I had insulin resistance
35:33Had degenerative back issues
35:35Caused by carrying
35:35Excess weight
35:36So for me
35:37It's
35:38Yeah
35:39It's treating a disease
35:40But I think
35:41At the same time
35:42You don't win prizes
35:43For suffering
35:44You don't win prizes
35:45For
35:46You know
35:47Who's put in the most work
35:48And at the end of the day
35:49When we're on our deathbed
35:50I'm not going to look back
35:51And regret taking this
35:52Mark
35:53What do you think
35:53About the idea
35:54Of these drugs
35:54Or even
35:55Your surgery
35:56As cheating
35:57Yeah
35:59I mean
36:00You hear it all the time
36:01Anytime someone
36:02Has a gastric sleeve
36:03Or a bypass
36:04Or jumps on these drugs
36:06People do think
36:08It is cheating
36:08But
36:09It's usually people
36:10That haven't really lived
36:12A life of being a fat person
36:14And they don't really understand
36:15You know
36:16If there's a chance
36:18That you can
36:19Get yourself healthier
36:20And take away
36:21All of the back pain
36:22And all of the issues
36:24That you've got
36:24From being bigger
36:25Because I do think
36:26That it's a disease
36:27If there's a chance
36:29You're going to take it
36:29And that's the reason
36:30Why I had my surgery
36:32Probably the reason
36:32Why you guys
36:33Are on these medication
36:34Because it's just
36:34That chance
36:35Of getting some
36:36Of your life back again
36:37So if they think
36:39It's cheating
36:39Let them
36:40Yeah let them
36:41Yeah let them
36:41But I think
36:42The other thing too
36:43Is it's not about
36:44Just taking the drug
36:45And that's it
36:46And magically
36:48You're thin
36:49You've had to
36:50Change your diets
36:51You've had to do the work
36:53You do the exercise
36:54So you were saying
36:55You walk
36:56You know
36:56I don't think
36:57It's cheating
36:57And I don't think
36:58It's a magic cure
36:59But it's interesting
37:00I was putting in the work
37:01Before I went on this medication
37:04I was going to the gym
37:05And I was doing
37:06All the things they say
37:07You know
37:07Eat healthy
37:08And do all of this
37:08Give up alcohol
37:10You know
37:11Do a personal training
37:1212 week course
37:14Yeah
37:14And it didn't move
37:16It didn't budge
37:17The scales
37:17Is there a lot of pressure
37:19To kind of
37:20Out yourself
37:21To say that you're on Ozempic
37:23When people come up to you
37:23And go
37:23Oh my god
37:24You look amazing
37:24You've lost weight
37:25Do you feel like you
37:26Should say
37:27How you've lost the weight
37:28I don't think
37:29It's anyone's business
37:30How you lose weight
37:32Put on weight
37:32Do anything
37:33For me
37:34I made the choice
37:35Quite early on
37:35To tell people
37:36Because I
37:38You see so much
37:39In the media
37:40You see so many celebrities
37:41And the horror stories
37:42And you don't
37:43See the millions of people
37:45That this medication
37:46Is helping
37:46On a daily basis
37:47And so for me
37:48I wanted to be
37:48Really transparent about it
37:50Because I wanted
37:51Everyone in my life
37:51To know
37:52That there are options
37:53Out there for you
37:54You don't have to
37:55Suffer anymore
37:55You know
37:57You don't have to eat
37:57Cabbage soup
37:59For every meal
38:00There are
38:00There are other alternatives
38:01And even just thinking about
38:03Maybe it's not this medication
38:04But just knowing
38:05That there are other things
38:06Out there for them to do
38:07Mark
38:07Obesity is a disease
38:10Oh
38:10Ugh
38:11Still to come
38:13Can you balance
38:14Body positivity
38:15With health
38:16I just
38:17I love being fat
38:18Which I think
38:19Is such a radical thing
38:20For people to hear
38:21And for people to say
38:22Can you be healthy
38:23At any size
38:24I don't think so
38:25I think there's a size
38:26Where you're not really
38:27Very healthy anymore
38:28And will the new
38:30Weight loss drugs
38:31Turbo charge
38:32Fat phobia
38:32The fat phobia
38:34That I feel
38:34Is directed at one person
38:35And that's me
38:36I don't think that
38:37I'm more positive
38:38About my body
38:39I thought it was shit then
38:40And I think it's shit now
38:41Mark
38:46Obesity is a disease
38:48Oh
38:49Ugh
38:50Um
38:51I personally
38:53Have spent a lot of time
38:54Trying to separate
38:55Fat from health
38:57And separating
38:58Sort of
38:59Bigness
39:01From being unhealthy
39:02I am also
39:04Type 2 diabetic
39:05I was diagnosed
39:06In 2017
39:07Both my parents
39:08Are diabetic
39:08And so it was just
39:09A predisposition
39:10As well
39:11Um
39:12At the very beginning
39:12I was placed
39:14On a hunger suppressant
39:16Oral medication
39:17And um
39:18You're right
39:19It did drown out
39:20The food noise
39:20But it also
39:21Drowned out
39:21Everything else
39:22And so for a long time
39:23I didn't feel like myself
39:24I didn't
39:25I didn't feel cheery
39:26I didn't feel sad
39:28I just didn't feel anything
39:29Um
39:30And so I quickly
39:30Went off that
39:31Um
39:32And I have been
39:33Suggested
39:33Not prescribed
39:34But suggested
39:34As I'm big
39:35And I remember
39:36That first conversation
39:38And just being so
39:39Uncomfortable with it
39:40And mostly because
39:41You know
39:41My dad
39:42He was one of the
39:44Also one of the early
39:45Early people
39:45Who had access to it
39:46In like 2022
39:47And I remember
39:48The first conversation
39:49I had with him
39:50Was like
39:50Oh my goodness
39:51You've lost so much weight
39:52And he's like
39:52Yeah I'm on Ozempic
39:53But I've got to stop
39:55Because I can't access it anymore
39:56There's
39:57We're out of stock
39:58There's no one
39:59No one sucks it
40:00In our area anymore
40:01Um
40:02So for me
40:02When I think about Ozempic
40:03I can acknowledge
40:05You know
40:06Its ability
40:06To change lives
40:08And its ability
40:09To you know
40:10Manage sugar
40:11And that's
40:11Its first and foremost
40:12Function
40:13But then I think
40:14About the people
40:15Who don't have access
40:17To it
40:17Who aren't
40:19Financially stable
40:20Who can't do it
40:20And that's
40:21When I feel like
40:22When people are
40:23Using it for vanity
40:23For other reasons
40:24Not for health
40:25But for vanity
40:25That's where I have
40:27An issue with things
40:28Like Ozempic
40:28I feel like a lot of
40:29Like early 2000s
40:31Late 90s sentiments
40:32Are coming back
40:33Heroin chic
40:34Crack chic
40:35Where it's like
40:36This drug
40:36That'll make you thin
40:37And desirable
40:38And your
40:39You know
40:39Your problems
40:40Will go away
40:40But they won't go away
40:42You can lose all your weight
40:43And still have problems
40:44It's interesting
40:45As part of this
40:46We
40:47I want to go talk
40:48To a journalist
40:48By the name of
40:49Johan Hari
40:49And he himself
40:51Has been on Ozempic
40:52There was this
40:53One thing that he said
40:54That has stuck with me
40:56You know
40:56The most difficult
40:57Moment for me
40:58In all the research
40:59For the book
40:59Was
41:01About six months
41:02Into taking the drugs
41:03I was FaceTiming
41:04With my niece
41:04Erin
41:05She was sort of
41:06Teasing me
41:06She was saying
41:07Like oh I didn't know
41:07You had a neck before
41:08Right
41:08But I was sort of
41:09Saying I look good
41:10And
41:11Suddenly she looked down
41:13And she said
41:14Will you get me some Ozempic
41:15Because she's a perfectly
41:16Healthy weight
41:16She always has been
41:17And I thought she was kidding
41:18And I laughed
41:19And suddenly I realised
41:20She wasn't joking
41:20And I thought
41:23Oh shit
41:24Have I undermined
41:25Every lesson
41:26I was trying to give her
41:27Since she was a little girl
41:28And I have many worries
41:30About these drugs
41:31But one is that
41:32I worry that they will
41:32Set and train a dynamic
41:34Of a kind of
41:36Hyper thin norm
41:37Becoming massively promoted again
41:39And
41:40I think that's a real problem
41:42Will it accentuate
41:43The stigma against
41:44Being overweight or obese
41:45I think it probably will
41:47And that is not good
41:49Mark we've
41:50Done all of this progress
41:52As a society
41:53To become
41:53More comfortable
41:54With our bodies
41:55More accepting of our bodies
41:56Yeah
41:57Do these drugs
41:58Have the risk of undoing
41:59All of that work?
42:01Oh 100%
42:02Whatever route
42:04These medications take
42:05Whatever
42:06New fat comes up
42:07I think
42:08The larger issue here
42:09Is just how society
42:11Treats fatness
42:11And how society
42:12Views fatness
42:13And how
42:14If people just
42:16Open their minds
42:18A little
42:18Little
42:19Tiny little
42:20Petite little bit
42:20That
42:22I don't know
42:22We'd be a little bit
42:23More understanding
42:24Of each other
42:24And over each other's
42:25Circumstances
42:26Because fatness
42:27Isn't always a choice
42:28And it will remain
42:31That for a very
42:32Very long time
42:33Regardless of where
42:34These medications
42:35Going
42:35I think it's really
42:36Hard though
42:36When our fat
42:38Role models
42:39Are dropping
42:40Like flies
42:41Like
42:42There's been a boom
42:43Of all these drugs
42:45And we had
42:46The Rebel Wilsons
42:47We had the Lizzo's
42:48Of the world
42:48Who were preaching
42:49Body positivity
42:51And
42:51But now they're all
42:53Skinny
42:53Because they're on
42:53A Zempic
42:54I'd argue that Lizzo
42:55Hasn't
42:56She hasn't admitted
42:56To taking a Zempic
42:57So that's speculation
42:59I think fat shame
43:00Is one of the last
43:01Widely acceptable
43:02Forms of discrimination
43:03In our society
43:04And I think these drugs
43:05Might entrench that
43:07Further potentially
43:07Even though I think
43:08They're really helpful
43:09Clearly they're helpful
43:10I worry that they might
43:12Entrench that idea further
43:13You're
43:14Implying
43:16That
43:17People taking this medication
43:19Will
43:19Become
43:20The evil
43:22That we've all
43:23You know
43:23Been fighting against
43:24In terms of discriminating
43:25Against people
43:26That choose not to take it
43:27And I think that
43:28That might be a little bit
43:29Of a narrow view
43:30I think
43:31You know
43:32I
43:32All of the pressure
43:33That I placed upon
43:34Myself
43:35About being overweight
43:36I have never directed
43:38It externally
43:38I don't care
43:39What anyone looks like
43:40The fat phobia
43:42That I feel
43:43Is directed at one person
43:44And that's me
43:44But were you ever
43:45On the receiving end
43:46Of it though
43:47I guess it's like
43:47There is still
43:48A societal expectation
43:49That everybody's
43:50Navigating here
43:51Yeah
43:52Mark why is it so
43:53Important to you
43:54To maintain
43:55Your body size
43:56As is
43:56I just
43:58I love being fat
43:59Which I think
44:00Is such a radical thing
44:01For people to hear
44:02And for people to say
44:03I love my fatness
44:05I love that I'm soft
44:06And I love that my fatness
44:07Brings comfort to other people
44:09I love fatness
44:10On other people
44:11As well
44:11I think it also came
44:13With a love of
44:14You know
44:14You mentioned
44:15Those celebrities
44:15I love
44:16Queen Latifah
44:17I love Melissa McCarthy
44:19I love Huey
44:21Huey's one of my favourites
44:22One of his quotes
44:24That stuck with me
44:25Was
44:25Never trust a skinny chef
44:27Which I was just like
44:30Yeah preach
44:30Thank you so much
44:31For putting it into words
44:33If I ever meet him
44:34I will pass away
44:35But I just
44:37I want to honour
44:38My self honour
44:39That this is
44:40And trust that
44:41This is the body
44:42That I'm supposed to have
44:43When I was on
44:44Those medications
44:45And when I'm taking
44:46My diabetic medication
44:47My weight
44:49There was never a point
44:50Where my weight
44:51Was heavily fluctuated
44:53It just stayed in this form
44:54This was my body
44:55This is how it is
44:56I've always been a big boy
44:57And I will carry that pride
44:58Hopefully
44:59For the rest of my life
45:00Yeah
45:01So how do you go about
45:02Balancing that pride
45:03And who you are
45:03As part of your identity
45:04With the health concerns
45:06I will obviously
45:07Take my blood sugar
45:08Very seriously
45:09I will always be mindful
45:11Of what I'm eating
45:11But I don't want to
45:13Take the joy away
45:14From anything
45:14I don't want to
45:15Take the joy away
45:16From looking the way
45:18I do
45:18And loving the way
45:19I do
45:19I know that
45:21When you go
45:22For a doctor's appointment
45:24Something that always happens
45:25For me
45:26Not every single time
45:28But a lot of the time
45:29Is that conversation
45:30Around if you lost
45:31If you lost weight
45:33This might not be an issue
45:35Like everything
45:36Medically
45:36Is that they want you
45:37To lose weight
45:38Like that's the conversation
45:40A lot of people
45:41Bigger people
45:42Don't go to the doctor
45:43Because that's what
45:44They're going to get told
45:45If you lost weight
45:46100%
45:47Yeah
45:47Yeah I feel like
45:49It's like the number one thing
45:50That you can present
45:51With almost any medical issue
45:53A broken finger
45:54Oh well
45:54It could be easier
45:55If you lost weight
45:56Yeah
45:56Your fingers doing
45:57A lot of carrying
45:57And I think health
45:59As well as being used
46:00As a weapon
46:00Against fat people
46:01It's that faux concern
46:03For your
46:03I'm just worried
46:04About your health
46:04Yeah
46:05You don't even know me
46:06Why are you concerned
46:07About my health
46:07Like it's a very
46:08It's being masqueraded
46:11Has everyone been told
46:12That I'm just worried
46:13About your health
46:14Has everyone heard that
46:15Yeah right
46:16Brenda can you be healthy
46:17At any size
46:18I truly believe you can
46:20So
46:21You know
46:24Health
46:24The way you look
46:26And the size
46:27Is not an indication
46:28Of health
46:28There are a lot
46:28Of skinny people
46:29Who have heart attacks
46:31Running marathons
46:32And things like that
46:34Sporting events
46:34I think the healthy
46:36The health is all about
46:38Moving your body
46:39Making sure that you're
46:41Eating
46:41You know
46:42A balanced diet
46:42Those sorts of things
46:43So definitely
46:45Is possible
46:45Mark
46:46I don't think so
46:47No
46:48I just think
46:50For me personally
46:51It got to a point
46:52Where I started
46:53To get so big
46:54That everything
46:54Was just starting
46:55To shut down on me
46:56I was having
46:57Constant back pain
46:58Shoulder pain
46:59Neck pain
47:00Constant headaches
47:02Just feeling sluggish
47:04I could barely breathe
47:05Getting up the stairs
47:06I don't think
47:08That that's very healthy
47:09And
47:09I was
47:10I was a big person
47:12But
47:12There's a lot of people
47:13That are a lot bigger
47:14Than I am
47:15And I can only imagine
47:16How much of a struggle
47:18It is
47:18To lug around
47:20That much weight
47:20So I think
47:22Maybe for a short
47:23Period of time
47:23And especially
47:24Especially if you're younger
47:25And you're more able
47:26To carry all that weight
47:27But as you get older
47:28I just don't
47:29I think there's a size
47:30Where you're not
47:31Really very healthy anymore
47:32I am interested though
47:33Donna
47:34Yes
47:34Since you've lost weight
47:36How has your relationship
47:38With your body
47:39Changed?
47:40Now I see it
47:41As a much stronger
47:42Vessel
47:42As in
47:43I can do things
47:44I couldn't do before
47:45And I can
47:46Go to the gym
47:48I go to Pilates
47:48Three times a week
47:49And I'm not afraid
47:51To go
47:51And work out
47:53For you
47:54Joanne?
47:55Yeah I think
47:56You know I'd love to say
47:57That my weight loss journey
47:58Was 100% about my health
48:00It was very strongly
48:01About my health
48:02But
48:02I'd love to say
48:04I'm strong enough
48:04To not care about
48:05What people think
48:06About how I look
48:07I'm not that strong
48:09So
48:09But I think for me
48:11You know
48:12Being able to
48:13Get out of bed
48:14Without back pain
48:16Being able to go
48:16On a long walk
48:18Without my hips hurting
48:19Being able to go
48:20To the gym and lift
48:21And just be
48:22Kind of more active
48:23And happier
48:24And also
48:25I mean the side effects
48:26Of the medication
48:28That I'm on
48:28My anxiety
48:29Has gone
48:30My depression
48:30Has gone
48:31The inflammation
48:32In my body
48:32Has disappeared
48:33So
48:34You know
48:35Weight loss
48:35Is one element of it
48:36But
48:36The other benefits
48:37To this medication
48:38Are
48:38Are incredible
48:40Mark
48:41How do you feel
48:41About your body now?
48:43Um
48:44Well
48:44When you lose
48:45A whole bunch of weight
48:46You end up
48:46With a whole bunch
48:47Of other problems
48:47So
48:48You end up
48:50With excess skin here
48:51And it's all goopy here
48:52And it's gross over there
48:53So
48:54It just feels the same
48:55Honestly
48:55I don't think
48:56That I'm more positive
48:57About my body
48:58It's just a different
48:59I thought it was shit then
49:00And I think it's shit now
49:01Just shit in a different way
49:03Yeah
49:04Yeah
49:05Brenda
49:05How do you feel
49:06About your body now?
49:07Most days
49:07I'm very very happy
49:08With my body
49:09I
49:10Um
49:10Didn't always feel like that
49:12So
49:13I used to hate my body
49:14Absolutely
49:15Absolutely hated it
49:16Um
49:17But now
49:18I'm happy with it
49:19I love
49:19The things that I can do
49:20As well
49:21So I can go for long walks
49:22With the dog
49:23On the beach
49:24I've gone
49:25I've entered into
49:27You know
49:27Like
49:28Triathlons
49:29Those sorts of things
49:30Because I
49:31I like my body
49:32As it is now
49:33It's not perfect
49:34A lot of people
49:35Won't like it
49:36Because it does have
49:36All the rolls
49:37And the cellulite
49:38And everything like that
49:39But I like it
49:40It's amazing for me
49:41And
49:42You know
49:42It's done amazing things
49:44Well there's a market
49:45For that
49:45Thanks
49:47Is it called
49:48Body positivity?
49:49I think I'll have a go
49:50At that
49:50Mark
49:51When you look in the mirror
49:52If you could tell your body
49:54Something
49:54What would you say?
49:56Don't
49:56I'm getting emotional
49:56If I could speak to my body
49:59I would say
49:59Thank you
50:00For keeping me alive
50:01And
50:03You know
50:04Thank you for
50:05Being my best friend
50:07Like
50:08I'm going to do my best
50:10To continue loving you
50:11To the best of my ability
50:12That will change
50:14I hope not often
50:16But that will change
50:16But
50:18Yeah
50:18Let's do our best
50:19Friends
50:21Thank you so much
50:22For coming and having dinner with me
50:24And
50:24Cheers to our bodies
50:25Cheers
50:26Cheers
50:26For keeping us alive
50:28Yes
50:28Cheers
50:29Cheers
50:30Coming up next week
50:33Get old
50:34Or die trying
50:35I just want to be alive forever
50:37Every day I wake up and think
50:39Bugger I'm still here
50:40Meet the seniors
50:41Doing things differently
50:42I am getting stronger
50:43And I'm feeling stronger
50:44I am amazed at some of the weights
50:47That I'm lifting now
50:48I become a human lab rat
50:50To see just how badly
50:51My body is ageing
50:52Okay so this is a measure
50:55Of your basal metabolic rate
50:56And we talk sex
50:58After 70
50:59I haven't been laid
51:00For about 15 years
51:03No we've got to go there
51:04Because that's what we've got to talk about
51:06I'm totally happy
51:06I'm a sex therapist
51:07I go there a lot
51:08Cucumbers are better than me
51:09Now you tell me
51:10That's next week
