00:0050 seconds was enough time to reprogram that car so that they had control of it and we didn't
00:06but an army of investigators are fighting back the car is actually parked just there by fitting
00:12vehicles with high-tech trackers can't tell you what the devices look like or where we hide them
00:17so they can trace track it's a cat and mouse game now we just have to follow that signal
00:21and snatch them back from the crooks who took them there you go there we are got it before
00:25they're sold on or shipped overseas they're called organized crime groups for a reason
00:29they're organized they plan this stuff
00:39today a much-loved motorhome is snatched from the owner's driveway
00:44i stuck my head out the window to then see the vehicle starting up and it's like what the heck
00:50and a family are reunited with their valuable electric bike that's our bike right there
00:59that's perfect with the guy there as well the kids wanted to see real life superheroes this is the bike
01:05this is the moment thieves steal a 54 000 pound motorhome dragging christmas lights behind them as they make
01:20their getaway from a home in the west midlands there goes all your hopes and dreams and plans for the future
01:27motorhomes have been growing in popularity over recent years when hugo and kate russell bought theirs
01:37it was everything they ever wanted the motorhome was dedicated going off on adventures the beauty of
01:47being able to have it all loaded up being able just to hop in and go right we're off
01:52we had bought it just before covid yeah it was like this is great what a good decision you can just
02:02pull over by the side of the road and just get have a cup of tea and just sit and watch the waves
02:07in the wind and the rain you know but you still get the comfort of home it was kept on a gravel driveway
02:14outside their home in harbourn birmingham and fitted with a steering lock alarm and immobiliser kept it
02:21relatively well secured it was pretty tightly tucked in um and yeah we did what insurers wanted us to do
02:30to keep it safe around 4 000 motorhomes caravans and camper vans are stolen every year a growing number
02:39are taken from people's driveways and on new year's day 2022 hugo and kate's pride and joy was targeted
02:49we were woken up by our dog barking their cocker spaniel willow heard footsteps on the gravel outside
02:57she barked and was like that's strange she doesn't do that normally wonder what's going on there i thought
03:03no then she did it again it's like right let me have a look and in that 20 seconds i suppose it took
03:10from me to get you know just to hop out of bed and go is there anything actually going on or that
03:14and as i stuck my head out the window to then see the vehicle starting up and it's like what the heck
03:22the events that followed were captured by a security camera just below the bedroom window
03:28effectively i'm standing above that camera and you're seeing what i'm seeing there's a masked man
03:35on the passenger side of the motorhome and a second man inside the vehicle there's also a getaway car
03:41just over the road as a car comes up the road they duck down so they're not being picked up they go back
03:47to the front of the vehicle and they're looking at the person inside dealing with it and then at that
03:52point you then see the lights blink on the van that it's now unlocked so you know they're working as a
03:58team moments later the motorhome pulls away but it wasn't the low-key getaway they'd hoped for
04:05there was our motorhome being driven off the driveway with christmas lights that we have across our gutters
04:12of our house and just following behind being pulled off in the cameras just going down the road down down
04:19the road behind me the thieves briefly pulled over to try to disconnect the lights before driving off
04:25again firstly there was immediate moment of shock i need to ring the police i need to get out there and
04:34there's just like a plethora of thoughts um so yeah i found myself running out the front of the house
04:39in pajamas fat use that is with phone ringing in police and giving him a description
04:45police scoured the area but the motorhome was never traced it appears as though they had checked
04:54the van out already yeah this is what they would like um and away they went to lose something that
05:03you've invested so much time and effort and and thoughts into that it's just driven off in moments
05:10off your driveway if it ever happens again hugo is determined to be better prepared what i would
05:19recommend to anyone is actually practice what would you do if something happens just walk through those
05:27scenarios come on in the car willow but there is at least one member of the family basking in the
05:33aftermath willow is a very good guard dog i wish she was bigger and right out the front of the driveway
05:39but then you know she would have frightened them away for now hugo and kate are the proud owners of
05:46a semi-converted van but they hope one day to replace their stolen motorhome
05:54we didn't buy another one straight away and we haven't bought one yet we have to reflect on what
06:00actually happened and you know are we prepared to go through that again if it's valuable and it's out the
06:06front then it's your advertising it doesn't matter whether it's a motorhome or a good car or a good
06:14bicycle you know if some things are valuable and it's nickable then that's sadly the state of affairs
06:21that we're in at the moment unwilling to put up with this state of affairs is vehicle recovery
06:33specialist richard taylor who's just received an alert from one of his customers is there any cctv footage
06:41okay i'll just give you an update when it alarms in and then we'll take it from there yeah a vehicle
06:46fitted with a tracker has been stolen off a builder's yard in southwest london it's a telehandler plant
06:53machine so that's like a forked truck with a it extends upwards and it can deliver like pallets
06:59um to building sites and things valuable machine probably about 40 000 pounds okay so if that if
07:06that moves anywhere i need to know as i'm driving up there we'll do it thanks a lot
07:10cheers richard's heading up the m3 towards london the thieves could be hiding the vehicle before
07:20shipping it overseas it was inside a locked and secure site and it's gone walking so they're not
07:27sure how they put it out this site at all from security personnel cctv can't see it it's a bit of
07:33a mystery i definitely want to get it today because that will be moved probably tomorrow
07:38the track has been activated and a cell site towers picked up the signal giving richard an approximate
07:43location but there's no gps which could make it harder to pinpoint the machine's precise whereabouts
07:50that's reporting a cell site which is quite close to where it was stolen from actually
07:55probably only a mile away or so back at base richard's sister jackie is monitoring the cell
08:03site signal they're in constant contact hi jack i just wanted to check uh that was still recording
08:12from the same location and everything before i get to the m25 yeah let me just double check
08:18richard's now in southeast london close to the cell site tower the stolen vehicle can't be far away so he
08:25switches on his short range radio receiver to help track it down okay so it's about a mile mile to go
08:34and i've just pulled over a quick roof antenna on uh just check it here the radio signals harder to
08:43block and can penetrate thick walls and other objects but so far richard's picking nothing up
08:49the distance is normally a little bit a little bit shorter in these urban areas so we probably
08:56have to be right on it within a few hundred yards for at least before we pick it up
09:00usually if there's no gps we're we're really monitoring the mobile masks a lot a lot closer
09:06looking at the strength of the mobile mass looking at how many mobile masks we've got we then get the
09:11opportunity to look at various other masks and triangulate them try and make sure we get the
09:16angles right so we can get him into the right area richard switches the signal onto a different
09:23phone network and widens the search area at last he's picking up a faint heartbeat it's the tracker
09:31i think i've picked up the rf um so i'll just have a little look around here the way you're heading
09:38you're getting closer and closer that's good good news all right speak to you in a bit then
09:42bye bye the signal leads richard to a railway line he decides to continue the search on foot
09:49using a handheld receiver not in that direction no definitely in this direction a lot louder
10:00the signal leads him to a series of railway arches there's thick undergrowth and high fencing so
10:06visibility is restricted i can't see in there this would be a perfect place to hide a stolen vehicle
10:14it's impossible to see what's in there and the thick walls would block any gps signal trying to get
10:20through series of arches go underground and this one here in the corners i've got the strongest signal
10:26but i can't see in there stashed away in there but someone would need to have the key to the lock
10:33stronger signal definitely coming from underneath there richard needs access to the secure area
10:40under the arches so he contacts the police they're not coming on blue lights but they're coming to help
10:48so it's 9 24 in the evening and they could be here anytime for two hours or four hours whatever
10:57i've done my part so i've just i've just got to play the waiting game later night falls making the search
11:07even harder can they find the stolen machine it's been there i reckon have you got a key to this one
11:13a growing number of people in cities are switching to electric bikes rather than cars for short trips
11:28but thieves are cashing in on the trend and targeting e-bikes are you good to head down now
11:35yeah we've got the location for it we've got all the details we've sent them over to you
11:41james dunn co-founder of bike recovery specialists backpedal has just received an alert thieves have
11:48stolen a two and a half thousand pound e-bike and the owner has sent james a photo to help identify it
11:55it's a cowboy brand bike and these come with trackers pre-installed which is great
12:00the bike's being tracked to an estate in south london but pinpointing exactly where it's hidden could be
12:07difficult we've got this up on street view here and there's lots of flats around here there's quite a
12:14tall unit at the end here that is showing where the tracking is so that's going to be our kind of first
12:19port of call recovery agent bilal ali is on the estate he's picked up a gps signal from the stolen bike
12:27we're around this area over here and that would kind of suggest that is is still inside somewhere
12:36but potentially on a balcony or near towards the balcony door or a garden door bilal's determined
12:42to find the bike wherever it's hidden you can see from here there's got a baby seat on the back so
12:48speaking as a father of two i don't want to let this one get away so if it means we're gonna search
12:54a bit longer today so be it
13:00he identifies one section of the estate where he suspects the bike is hidden this is where the
13:05signal is the best in terms of spiking it might be on the first floor or maybe above so we're gonna
13:11try to gain access over here and try to see where it is bilal uses the communal walkways to check each
13:20flat door by door let's continue on our way we're gonna continue searching over here and floor by floor
13:29the scanner will hopefully spike when it spikes and if the spike is good enough at the correct door
13:35that would narrow things down and would suggest that the bike is in that property so
13:40we're gonna continue searching but uh yeah let's hope for the best
13:52the search draws a blank and now the daylight's going
13:59so as it stands we've searched this this white block over here we've searched that white block over
14:06there as well as the whole estate bilal is still convinced the bikes inside one of the flats
14:12or on one of the private balconies let's say it's in the flat inside you know where in the flat could
14:19affect the signal that we're getting if it's out far back towards the garden door or balcony door and
14:25we're in the front door we might not pick up the signal one thing for sure is that the bike is here
14:30somewhere next morning bilal's back and this time he's brought a secret weapon let's just go ahead
14:43and let's deploy the drone bilal's accompanied by drone specialist andy between them they scour the
14:51estates gardens and balconies looking for the stolen e-bike
14:58have you looked on the roof yesterday you know anything ah yeah that's a good point
15:07don't really see anything then bilal spots something and zooms into one of the balconies
15:13have a look over here to this side yeah
15:15the child's seat is clearly visible that's our bike that's our bike right there no that's perfect
15:26with the guy there as well fantastic it's in the same block bilal was searching yesterday son of
15:34the gun is right there unbelievable they found it now all they need to do is get it back
15:44believe it to be this one here
15:56hello there's no answer but they know someone's in they've just seen him on the balcony
16:04yes brother listen we're after that bike that you have on the balcony
16:16is it yours yes it is ours the guy had the bike stolen he commissioned my company to find it
16:21in the in the garage no not in the garage on your balcony the resident claims he was keeping the bike
16:29for someone else then he goes to fetch it from the balcony and quickly hands it over
16:37bilal's heard it all before give me whatever kind of story you want but yeah i know the truth
16:44he checks the bike's frame number to make absolutely sure it is the stolen bike
16:49then arranges to return it to its rightful owner so we have your bike sir oh amazing okay if you want to
16:55come out amazing i will come down now okay cheers bye-bye all right recovering this stolen bike may
17:02have taken a day and a half but moments like this make it all worthwhile the kids wanted to see real
17:07life superheroes oh you're the superhero man not us but yeah this is the bike amazing how are you
17:15i have two kids of my own when i saw your profile picture on the cow i said hang on a minute do you
17:19have a and to be honest this was one of the things we looked out for when we flew up the drone i saw the
17:24white seat then i zoomed in a little bit i saw the i saw the saddle and the handlebars i said this is
17:28the bike 100 so yeah look we're glad you got it back and uh happy to help out okay thanks so much jamie
17:36all the best no worries you take care have a good one
17:46it's early morning at felixstowe port and the stolen vehicle team are already hard at work
17:52head of navsis sharon norton is here to see how they're getting on we focus on vehicle crime every
17:59day all day every month every week and that's why we've got people like adam and my team at navsis who
18:08are a committed band of experts who love uh tackling vehicle crime port intelligence officer adam gibson
18:18has had a tip-off about a container destined for africa we've got a box uh it's come through on our
18:25profiling we've identified it um it's manifested as auto parts but he suspects the cargo documents
18:32might not represent what's in the container
18:38and he's not wrong
18:43range rover sport old shape range road sport in the door
18:46um we then got another hilux hanging up at the back
18:50and then it looks like a nissan duke in the middle the range rover isn't typical of the sort
18:58of vehicles the navsis team are used to dealing with that range rubber is probably in the region
19:04of 70 80 000 when it was new but by the look of the model and stuff like that it's probably
19:11eight to ten years old now um so the value of that's probably dropped considerably it's probably
19:17worth about 20 now if that um nissan duke seven or eight grand um but the big money car in here
19:25again is the new hilux removing the duke allows the team access to the hilux that's been strapped to
19:32the roof we're just gonna go around it have a look at the markings on it see whether they look like
19:36they're genuine markings or not uh and then do some checks and see what we've got adam inspects the vin
19:42sticker on the door of the car that to me looks like the genuine label so we'll run the number on
19:48that and see what we get back an hpi check should confirm if the car is cloned but the world of
19:58exporting stolen cars is rarely predictable it's not a bad sticker to be fair but it does actually look
20:05on closer inspection that it may be a fake adam suspects the hilux has been cloned which means
20:12it's using the identity of another black hilux to try and trick investigators into believing it's not
20:18a stolen car the instead of cloning is basically when you've got a stolen car unless you clone its
20:25identity it's only got a certain value as a stolen car isn't it if you're to try and portray it
20:30that it's not stolen you need to move the identity of a different vehicle onto it so you need to then
20:35convince the world that that one isn't stolen because it's not that vehicle so what they do
20:39is they take the id from a different vehicle that isn't stolen either can be exported can be written
20:46off or it can just be one of another one that's on the road already move that idea onto this vehicle
20:52and put it back out on the road or they export it he takes a closer look around the car for further clues
20:59where we've seen on before on the hilux where they have the numbers um stamped in the chassis leg
21:06this has had it ground out and painted over it's quite clear that this area has been tampered with
21:12you've got grinding dishing into the metal so they've ground the number out
21:16and then they've stamped a number the other side which matches the number on the stickers
21:21due to the criminal's careless work adam is able to confirm the hilux is stolen
21:27but what about the nissan duke it's stolen off the street in london and just a conventional
21:34theft off the street it's not particularly high value um but there's a market for everything in
21:40this world this was fairly easy to id because it's still got the park tower hamlet's uh residence
21:46parking permit in the window with the registration and so all they've done with this one is chucked a
21:51set number plates on it and put it in the container the range rover that was also awaiting export in
21:57the container is proving much trickier to trace that vin number at the moment comes back it's all
22:03legitimate um the vehicle that it's claiming to be isn't out as stolen but it's just the fact it's in
22:09a container to have the stolen cars at the moment i'm not just going to take it on face value and um i'm
22:15going to do some extra layers of checks just to make sure identifying the range rover is a work in
22:20progress but in the meantime adam has uncovered the true identity of the cloned hilux so that plate
22:28there comes back to a 2020 model it comes back to a black hilux just not this black hilux and that's
22:36what they use after the theft they quickly chuck them on with sticky pads and drive away from the scene
22:40we often get the genuine plates on the back seat of the car they will go out they'll have an idea
22:47potentially what vehicle they're going for either a specific vehicle or they're saying right we're
22:51going for a black hilux tonight so they'll take plates out in the car with them that come back to
22:55a black hilux and they might have earmarked a couple of them and whichever one's available to them they'll
23:00take and then they use the plates to get away from the scene they're called organized crime groups for
23:05a reason they're organized they plan this stuff they know exactly what they're doing they know what
23:09they're taking but not all cars are exported some assaults are members of the public who have no
23:15idea they're handling stolen goods the problem you have with people who go out and buy these cars um
23:22they'll do these quick checks they'll purchase the car and then they end up getting their fingers
23:26burnt because they're what we call an innocent purchaser where they've given good money for the vehicle
23:30and then suddenly they realize it's not theirs they've lost their money as well the most important
23:34thing is if it seems like it's too good a deal there's normally a reason why by intercepting these
23:40cars navsis is hitting the criminals where it hurts in their pockets you know it has been described as a
23:46cat and mouse game where you know the criminals will try to outsmart policing tactics and we will
23:54work relentlessly taking vehicles out of containers that are destined for overseas markets you know that is the
24:01physical aspect of the policing energy and effort but obviously there's also this sort of combative um
24:09um you know play on wits which is we're trying to outsmart the criminal and they're continually
24:14trying to outsmart the police
24:24in southeast london two police officers have arrived richard's showing them where he thinks the stolen
24:30machines being stashed when you go through here you turn the sharp left and you've got access to
24:37under the arches which is bricked up as they move away from the railway arches the signal becomes weaker
24:45so if i go this way there's literally nothing down this way the signal's disappearing they head back to
24:53the arches and check the gates there's been a sharp rise in incidents like this with criminal gangs
25:01cashing in on the high demand for construction vehicles in countries like ukraine superintendent
25:08andy huddleston heads a dedicated police unit we've most definitely seen an increase in the theft of
25:15machinery linked to often conflict in parts of eastern europe and also in terms of where there's been areas
25:21of maybe natural disaster so there's been a demand for machinery for cleanups and things like that
25:26as well back in southeast london the police contact site security and a key holder arrives have you got
25:34a key to this one you haven't got a key to this one i don't know eventually they're in but will they find
25:44the stolen machine inside it's pitch black and overgrown the walls are thick enough to block a gps signal
26:01then right at the back richard notices two large cable wheels
26:06and behind them barely visible the long arm of a telehandler well hidden yeah it's not easy
26:20tracking down this vehicle has been one of richard's toughest cases it's inside a private yard they need
26:26a key access point it's behind a 10-foot wall there's no gps signal so they're going to be
26:30devastated when they come around and look around the corner and it's not there that's for sure
26:36a delighted customer will be reclaiming his 40 000 pound vehicle first thing in the morning
26:42for now it's being transferred to a secure network rail compound for safekeeping
26:49it looks undamaged and starts first time then it emerges triumphantly from under the arches
27:00getting it through the gates is a tight squeeze
27:10luckily there's no damage and that's one valuable vehicle snatched back from the thieves to be returned
27:17to its rightful owner well stashed away but not stashed away good enough to prevent us from finding it so
27:24that's that's great we found that it's a difficult location but the police have done their bit so i'm well
27:30that's great
27:35so
