00:00Car crime is at a record high across the UK there's a car stolen every four minutes
00:17leaving families feeling violated there's people in my house and more than likely they're not here
00:29for a good reason 50 seconds was enough time to reprogram that car so that they had control of
00:35it and we didn't but an army of investigators are fighting back the car is actually parked just
00:41there by fitting vehicles with high-tech trackers can't tell you what the devices look like or where
00:46we hide them so they can trace track it's a cat and mouse game now we just have to follow that
00:51signal and snatch them back from the crooks who took them there you go there we go got it before
00:55they're sold on or shipped overseas they're called organized crime groups for a reason
00:59they're organized they plan this stuff today a much-loved motorhome is snatched from the owners
01:12driveway I stuck my head out the window to then see the vehicle starting up and it's like what the
01:20heck and a family are reunited with their valuable electric bike that's our bike right there that's
01:29perfect with the guy there as well the kids wanted to see real life superheroes this is the bike
01:35this is the moment thieves steal a 54 000 pound motorhome dragging christmas lights behind them
01:50as they make their getaway from a home in the west midlands there goes all your hopes and dreams and
01:56plans for the future motorhomes have been growing in popularity over recent years when Hugo and Kate
02:06Russell bought theirs it was everything they ever wanted the motorhome was dedicated going off on
02:14adventures the beauty of being able to have it all loaded up being able just to hop in and go right
02:21we're off we had bought it just before Covey yeah it was like this is great what a good decision you
02:31can just pull over by the side of the road and just get have a cup of tea and just sit and watch
02:36the waves in the wind and the rain you know but you still get the comfort of home it was kept on a
02:43gravel driveway outside their home in Harbourn Birmingham and fitted with a steering lock alarm
02:49and immobiliser kept it relatively well secured it was pretty tightly tucked in and yeah we did what
02:58insurers wanted us to do to keep it safe around 4 000 motorhomes caravans and camper vans are stolen
03:07every year a growing number are taken from people's driveways and on New Year's Day 2022 Hugo and Kate's
03:15pride and joy was targeted we were woken up by our dog barking their cocker spaniel Willow heard footsteps
03:24on the gravel outside and she barked and it was like that's strange she doesn't do that normally
03:30wonder what's going on there I thought no then she did it again it's like right let me have a look
03:35and in that 20 seconds I suppose it took from me to get you know just to hop out of bed and go is
03:42there anything actually going on or that and as I stuck my head out the window to then see the
03:48vehicle starting up and it's like what the heck the events that followed were captured
03:54by a security camera just below the bedroom window effectively I'm standing above that camera and
04:01you're seeing what I'm saying there's a masked man on the passenger side of the motorhome and a second
04:08man inside the vehicle there's also a getaway car just over the road as a car comes up the road they
04:14duck down so they're not being picked up they go back to the front of the vehicle and they're looking
04:19at the person inside dealing with it and then at that point you then see the lights blink on the
04:24van that it's now unlocked so you know they're working as a team moments later the motorhome pulls
04:31away but it wasn't the low-key getaway they'd hoped for there was our motorhome being driven off the
04:38driveway with Christmas lights that we have across our gutters of our house and just following behind
04:45being pulled off in the cameras just going down the road down down the road behind me the thieves
04:51briefly pulled over to try to disconnect the lights before driving off again firstly there was immediate
04:59moment of shock I need to ring the police I need to get out there and there's just like a plethora of
05:05thoughts so yeah I found myself running out the front of the house in pajamas fat use that is with phone
05:12ringing in police and giving him a description police scoured the area but the motorhome was
05:20never traced it appears as though they had checked the van out already yeah this is what they would
05:29like and away they went to lose something that you've invested so much time and effort and and thoughts
05:37into that it's just driven off in moments off your driveway if it ever happens again Hugo
05:45is determined to be better prepared what I would recommend to anyone is actually practice what would
05:53you do if something happens just walk through those scenarios come on in the car will I but there is at
06:01least one member of the family basking in the aftermath it was a very good guard dog I wish it was bigger and
06:08right out the front of the driveway but then you know she would have frightened them away for now Hugo and
06:15Kate are the proud owners of a semi-converted van but they hope one day to replace their stolen motorhome
06:22home we didn't buy another one straight away and we haven't bought one yet we have to reflect on what actually
06:30happened and you know are we prepared to go through that again if it's valuable and it's out the front
06:37then it's your advertising it doesn't matter whether it's a motorhome or a good car or a good bicycle you
06:45know if some things are valuable and it's nickable then that's sadly the state of affairs that we're in
06:52at the moment unwilling to put up with this state of affairs is vehicle recovery specialist Richard
07:04Taylor who's just received an alert from one of his customers is there any CCTV footage okay I'll just give
07:12you an update when it alarms in and then we'll take it from there yeah a vehicle fitted with a tracker
07:17has been stolen off a builders yard in southwest London it's a tele handler plant machine so that's
07:24like a full truck with a extends upwards and it can deliver like pallets to building sites and things
07:31valuable machine probably about 40,000 pounds okay so if that did that moves anywhere I need to know as
07:38I'm driving up there thanks a lot see you later Richard's heading up the M3 towards London the
07:48thieves could be hiding the vehicle before shipping it overseas it was inside a locked and secure site
07:54and it's gone walkies so they're not sure how they got it out of this site at all from security
08:00personnel CCTV can't see it it's kind of a mystery I definitely want to get it today because that'll be
08:06move probably tomorrow the track has been activated and a cell site towers picked up the signal giving
08:12Richard an approximate location but there's no GPS which could make it harder to pinpoint the
08:18machines precise whereabouts that's reporting a cell site which is quite close to where it was stolen from
08:24actually probably only a mile away or so back at base Richard's sister Jackie is monitoring the
08:33cell site signal they're in constant contact Richard's now in southeast London close to the
08:51cell site tower the stolen vehicle can't be far away so he switches on his short-range radio receiver to help
08:58track it down okay so it's about a mile mile to go and I've just pulled over put roof antenna on
09:06just check it here the radio signals harder to block and can penetrate thick walls and other objects
09:16but so far Richard's picking nothing up the distance is normally a bit a little bit shorter in these urban
09:24areas so we probably have to be right on everything a few hundred yards really before we pick it up
09:29usually if there's no GPS we're really monitoring the mobile master lot a lot closer looking at the
09:36strength of the mobile mass looking at how many mobile mass we've got we then get the opportunity to
09:42look at various other masks and triangulate them try and make sure we get the angles right so we can get
09:48them into the right area Richard switches the signal on to a different phone network and widens the search area at
09:56last he's picking up a faint heartbeat it's the tracker I think I picked up the RF um so I'll just have a little
10:06look around here the way you're heading you're getting closer and closer that's good good news all right speak to you in a bit then
10:12the signal leads Richard to a railway line he decides to continue the search on foot using a handheld receiver
10:20not in that direction no definitely in this direction a lot louder the signal leads him to a series of railway
10:32arches this thick undergrowth and high fencing so visibility is restricted I can't see in there this
10:40would be a perfect place to hide a stolen vehicle it's impossible to see what's in there and the
10:47thick walls would block any GPS signal trying to get through series of arches go underground and this
10:53one here in the corners I've got the strongest signal but I can't see in there stashed away in there but
11:01someone would need to have a key to the lock stronger signals definitely coming from underneath there
11:06Richard needs access to the secure area under the arches so he contacts the police they're not
11:14coming on blue lights but they're coming to help so it's 9 24 in the evening and they could be here
11:22any time for two hours four hours whatever I've done my part so I'm just I've just got to fade away
11:32you can go later night falls making the search even harder can they find the stolen machine
11:40it's been there I reckon have you got a key to this one
11:51a growing number of people in cities are switching to electric bikes rather than cars for short trips but
11:58thieves are cashing in on the trend and targeting e-bikes are you good to head down now yeah we've got
12:07the location for it we've got all the details we've sent them over to you James done co-founder of bike
12:13recovery specialists backpedal has just received an alert thieves have stolen a two and a half thousand
12:20pound e-bike and the owner has sent James a photo to help identify it it's a cowboy brand bike and these
12:27come with trackers pre-installed which is great the bikes being tracked to an estate in South London but
12:34pinpointing exactly where it's hidden could be difficult we've got this up on Street View here
12:40and there's lots of flats around here there's quite a tall unit at the end here that is showing where the
12:47tracking is so that's going to be our kind of first port of call recovery agent Bilal Ali is on the
12:53estate he's picked up a GPS signal from the stolen bike we're around this area over here and that
13:02would kind of suggest that is is still inside somewhere but potentially on the balcony or near
13:08towards the balcony door or a garden door Bilal's determined to find the bike wherever it's hidden you
13:15can see from here there's got a BBC on the back so speaking as a father of two I don't want to let this
13:20one get away so if it means we're gonna search a bit longer today so be it he identifies one section
13:31of the estate where he suspects the bike is hidden this is where the signal is the best in terms of
13:37spiking it might be on the first floor or maybe above so we're gonna try to gain access over here and try
13:45to see where it is Bilal uses the communal walkways to check each flat door by door let's continue on
13:53our way we're gonna continue searching over here and floor by floor the scanner will hopefully spike when
14:02it spikes and if the spike is good enough at the correct door that would narrow things down and would
14:07suggest that the bike is in that property so we're gonna continue searching but yeah let's hope for the
14:15best
14:22the search draws a blank and now the daylights going so as it stands we've searched this this white block
14:34over here we've searched that white block over there as well as the whole estate Bilal is still
14:39convinced the bikes inside one of the flats or on one of the private balconies let's say it's in the
14:46flat inside you know where in the flat could affect the signal that we're getting if it's out far back
14:52towards the garden door balcony door and we're in the front door we might not pick up the signal one
14:58thing for sure is that the bike is here somewhere next morning Bilal's back and this time he's brought
15:12a secret weapon let's just go ahead and let's deploy the drone Bilal's accompanied by drone specialist Andy
15:19between them they scour the estate's gardens and balconies looking for the stolen e-bike
15:25oh yeah look on the roof yesterday you know anything ah yeah that's a good point
15:37I don't really see anything then Bilal spots something and zooms into one of the balconies have a
15:43look over here to this side yeah the child seat is clearly visible that's our bike that's our bike
15:54right there no that's perfect with the guy there as well fantastic it's in the same block Bilal was
16:02searching yesterday son of a gun is right there unbelievable they found it now all they need to do
16:13is get it back needed to be this one here hello there's no answer but they know someone's in they've
16:31just seen him on the balcony brother listen we're after that bike that you have on the balcony is it
16:46yours yes it is ours the guy had the bike stolen he commissioned my company to find it I can show you
16:53no not in the garage on your balcony the resident claims he was keeping the bike for someone else then
17:02he goes to fetch it from the balcony and quickly hands it over Bilal's heard it all before give me
17:10whatever kind of story you want but yeah I know the truth he checks the bike's frame number to make
17:16absolutely sure it is the stolen bike then arranges to return it to its rightful owner so we have your
17:22bike sir oh amazing okay if you want to come out amazing I will come down now okay see you shortly
17:28cheers bye-bye all right recovering this stolen bike may have taken a day and a half but moments
17:34like this make it all worthwhile the kids wanted to see real life super hero man not us but yeah this
17:41is the bike I have two kids of my own when I saw your profile picture on the car I said hang on a
17:49minute do you ever and to be honest this was one of the things we looked out for when we flew up the
17:53drone I saw the white seat then I zoomed in a little bit I saw the I saw the saddle and the handlebars I
17:58said this is the bike 100% so yeah look we're glad you got it back and happy to help out okay thanks
18:05so much Jamie all the best no worries you take care have a good one it's early morning at Felixstowe
18:18port and the stolen vehicle team are already hard at work head of navsis Sharon Norton is here to see
18:25how they're getting on we focus on vehicle crime every day all day every month every week and that's
18:34why we've got people like Adam and my team at navsis who are committed band of experts who love tackling
18:43vehicle crime port intelligence officer Adam Gibson has had a tip-off about a container destined for
18:50Africa we've got a box it's come through on our profiling we've identified it and it's manifested as auto parts but he
18:59suspects the cargo documents might not represent what's in the container and he's not wrong
19:13Range Rover Sport old-shaped Range Rover Sport in the door we then got another Hilux hanging up at the back
19:20and then it looks like a Nissan Juke in the middle the Range Rover isn't typical of the sort of
19:28vehicles the navsis team are used to dealing with that Range Rover is probably in the region of 70 80
19:35thousand when it was new but by the look of the model and stuff like that it's probably eight to ten
19:42years old now so the value of that's probably dropped considerably it's probably worth about 20
19:47now if that Nissan Juke seven or eight grand but the big money car in here again is the new Hilux removing
19:58the Duke allows the team access to the Hilux that's been strapped to the roof we just can go around it have
20:04a look at the markings on it see whether they look like they're genuine markings or not and then do some
20:09checks and see what we've got Adam inspects the VIN sticker on the door of the car that to me looks
20:15like the genuine label so we'll run the number on that and see what we get back
20:23an HPI check should confirm if the car is cloned but the world of exporting stolen cars is rarely
20:31predictable it's not a bad sticker to be fair but it does actually look on closer inspection that it may
20:37be a fake Adam suspects the Hilux has been cloned which means it's using the identity of another
20:44black Hilux to try and trick investigators into believing it's not a stolen car the instead of
20:50cloning is basically when you've got a stolen car unless you clone its identity it's only got a certain
20:56value as a stolen car isn't it if you're to try and portray it that it's not stolen you need to move
21:01the identity of a different vehicle onto it so you need to then convince the world that that one
21:06isn't stolen because it's not that vehicle so what they do is they take the ID from a different vehicle
21:11that isn't stolen either can be exported can be written off or it can just be one of another one
21:18that's on the road already move that idea onto this vehicle and put it back out on the road or they export it
21:24he takes a closer look around the car for further clues where we've seen on before on the Hilux where
21:31they have the numbers stamped in the chassis leg this has had it ground out and painted over it's
21:39quite clear that this area has been tampered with you've got grinding dishing into the metal so they've
21:44ground the number out and then they've stamped a number the other side which matches the number on
21:50the stickers due to the criminals careless work Adam is able to confirm the Hilux is stolen but
21:57what about the Nissan Duke is stolen off the street in London and just a conventional theft off the
22:04street it's not particularly high value but there's a market for everything in this world this was fairly
22:12easy to ID because it's still got the part Tower Hamlets residence parking permit in the window with the
22:18registration so all they've done with this one is Chuck to set number plates on it and put it in the
22:22container the Range Rover that was also awaiting export in the container is proving much trickier
22:30to trace that VIN number at the moment comes back there's all legitimate the vehicle that it's claiming
22:36to be isn't out as stolen but it's just the fact it's in a container to have the stolen cars at the
22:41moment I'm not just going to take it on face value and I'm gonna do some extra layers of checks just to
22:47make sure identifying the Range Rover is a work in progress but in the meantime Adam has uncovered
22:54the true identity of the cloned Hilux so that plate there comes back to a 2020 model it comes back to a
23:02black Hilux just not this black Hilux and that's what they use after the theft they quickly chuck them
23:08on with sticky pads and drive away from the scene we often get the genuine plates on the backseat of the
23:14car they will go out they'll have an idea potentially what vehicle they're going for
23:18either a specific vehicle or they're saying right we're going for a black Hilux tonight so they will
23:24take plates out in the car with them that come back to a black Hilux and they might have earmarked a
23:28couple of them and whichever one's available to them they'll take and then they use the plates to get
23:33away from the scene they're called organized crime groups for a reason they're organized they plan this
23:37stuff they know exactly what they're doing they know what they're taking but not all cars are exported
23:42some assaults are members of the public who have no idea they're handling stolen goods the problem you
23:49have with people who go out and buy these cars they'll do these quick checks they'll purchase the
23:54car and then they end up getting their fingers burnt because they're what we call an innocent
23:58purchaser where they've given good money for the vehicle and then suddenly they realize it's not
24:02theirs they've lost their money as well the most important thing is if it seems like it's too good
24:05a deal there's normally a reason why by intercepting these cars navsis is hitting the criminals where it
24:12hurts in their pockets you know it has been described as a cat-and-mouse game where you know
24:19the criminals will try to outsmart policing tactics and we will work relentlessly taking vehicles out of
24:27containers that are destined for overseas markets you know that is the physical aspect of the policing
24:33energy and effort but obviously there's also this sort of combative you know play on wits which is
24:41we're trying to outsmart the criminal and they're continually trying to outsmart the police
24:46in southeast London two police officers have arrived Richard's showing them where he thinks the
25:00stolen machines being stashed when you go through here you turn the sharp left and you've got access
25:06to under the arches which is bricked up as they move away from the railway arches the signal becomes weaker
25:14so if I go this way there's literally nothing down this way the signals disappearing they head
25:23back to the arches and check the gates there's been a sharp rise in incidents like this with criminal
25:30gangs cashing in on the high demand for construction vehicles in countries like Ukraine superintendent
25:37andy huddleston heads a dedicated police unit we've most definitely seen an increase in the theft of
25:45machinery linked to often conflict in parts of Eastern Europe and also in terms of where there's
25:50been areas of moving natural disaster so there's been a demand for machinery for cleanups and things
25:56like that as well back in southeast London the police contact site security and a key holder arrives you
26:03got a key to this one you haven't got a case of this one I don't know eventually they're in but will
26:13they find the stolen machine
26:20inside it's pitch black and overgrown
26:26the walls are thick enough to block a GPS signal
26:31then right at the back Richard notices two large cable wheels
26:37and behind them barely visible the long arm of a telehandler
26:42well in here it's not easy
26:45I've been looking for it since three o'clock this afternoon
26:49tracking down this vehicle has been one of Richard's toughest cases
26:54it's inside a private yard they need a key access point it's behind a 10 foot wall there's no GPS signal
27:00so they're going to be devastated when they come around and look around the corner and it's not there
27:03that's for sure a delighted customer will be reclaiming his 40,000 pound vehicle first thing in the
27:11morning for now it's being transferred to a secure network rail compound for safekeeping
27:17it looks undamaged and starts first time then it emerges triumphantly from under the arches
27:33getting it through the gates is a tight squeeze
27:39luckily there's no damage and that's one valuable vehicle snatched back from the thieves to be returned
27:47to its rightful owner well stashed away but not stashed away good enough to prevent us from finding it so
27:54that's that's great we found that it's a difficult location but the police have done their bit so I'm
27:59well happy
