00:00one of my first sightings of Valerie was probably within a week or two of her disappearance
00:12as we're looking around checking the sheep but there was this little dog that just popped up
00:18and she was as surprised as we were she was not having a part of it she just bolted I honestly
00:26didn't expect to see her again because we didn't think she'd survive it's a rugged place Kangaroo
00:34Island on the north coast particularly you know there's all sorts of things that could have happened
00:40and this is only a little dog it's a runt of a dog and then this photograph appears of a dash
00:48hound running across a paddock and we've looked at that and gone oh my gosh that dog is still alive
00:56people got excited and people got involved and suddenly the hunt for Valerie was on
01:03but it's closing in on Valerie the infamous runaway sausage dog a twist in the tale of
01:10South Australia's four-legged fugitive it's now been nearly 500 days since Georgia and
01:15Josh have seen their beloved sausage dog there are literally millions of people watching this
01:21if we lose that dog we're gonna be the laughing stock of the world she's now spent more time of her
01:32life missing on an island than she has with us we just wanted to bring our dog home I mean how hard is
01:41it to find a sausage dog yeah I mean surely we can find a sausage dog have any of you guys seen Valerie
01:47there's quite a few sausage dogs getting
02:17around on kangaroo island now say hello to do learn some tricks good job they're not a dog that I'm
02:26attracted to I like a bigger dog really dog that can actually do things okay the long long back and
02:36long body and the short legs their proportions don't make sense yeah I hate using the term cute but yeah they are really
02:45cute they're a hunting dog they're snappy little buggers on a good day Winnie that's enough here's a fun fact
02:57their feet smell like Doritos actual um if they were a human oh geez I'd be like me bit quirky bit special
03:08well done I think you have to have a sausage dog to know what it would be like to lose one
03:17thank you
03:26I first got Valerie as a present from my parents get out stop come on get out of there you terror I actually
03:41wasn't very impressed that they'd gotten me a puppy dog but yeah I fell in love with her she went
03:52absolutely everywhere with me Valerie would have been four months old when I met Josh I never thought in
04:02my wildest dreams that I would have a dash hand I was always kind of a big dog person but yeah Valerie
04:10started to become a very very special part of my life what is that she slept in bed with us she was our
04:22little princess so in November of 2023 we went on a family holiday to Kangaroo Island and we just thought
04:34it would be so much fun to go on a dog friendly holiday so yeah we decided to take her with us
04:39we get to Stokes Bay we set up camp and then we went to go to the beach and we took Valerie and she
04:59loved the beach so then it gets to the afternoon and so we're like oh we just really want to go kind of go fishing see if we
05:13can catch a fish but we didn't want to bring Valerie because it was very rocky
05:18so we come back to the campsite we'd set up her pen her toys her water food bed everything like that
05:29we're like look this should give us about half an hour
05:32we could see where we wanted to go fishing it was probably 200 meters away
05:40we got over there and I reckon it was probably 15 minutes yeah not even we had been over there and
05:51I saw this lady walking towards us and just had that feeling that there's something wrong
05:56Valerie had been in her pen and then she'd scratched on the edges and she'd gotten out and sat underneath
06:05Josh's car and one of the other campers was concerned that she'd get run over so they
06:10went to try and catch her and unfortunately they chased her about 500 meters up into a
06:17property and she was last seen going up a hill she just kept running she was like a
06:22little jackrabbit just bolting up this hill I run the cafe at Stokes Bay both of them
06:34came in here Georgia in tears very very distraught very very upset and obviously you ask the question
06:44what's going on and the dog's gone dogs run away they come back but for some reason something kept
06:53her moving and well she didn't come back we searched in the property for about an hour and a half we're
07:04exhausted from crying and searching and that's when we met Joe I'm thinking who that is walking on the property
07:17and they informed me they'd lost their dog so I thought oh what sort of dog have you lost
07:24a dash hound
07:26dash hound
07:27I offered to take them for a ride in the buggy see if she was running along the fence line
07:33we thought she could survive maybe a night or two
07:38um but that's about it
07:44the Kangaroo Island community Facebook page is the quickest most logical way we can see to get this
08:03message out and I put a post up saying you know our little dog's gone missing our little black and
08:08and dash hound if anyone sees anything please contact these are our numbers his photo of her and
08:14then Kangala Wildlife Rescue commented I think it was like two or three days after she first went missing
08:21that we got involved and by that stage we're starting to think this isn't looking good and
08:30it's not as going to be as simple as just a lost dog that's gone for a walk
08:34Jared came to Stokes Bay and we were like can we just put a trap out and he explained why that
08:42wouldn't work you know wildlife would just go in it and we don't actually know where she is
08:46and I can still remember standing there and there were three eagles up in the sky
08:51and I said to them I don't I don't know that your dog would have made it past them
09:00Valerie! Valerie!
09:07We did not want to leave that island without our dog
09:10we had a bit of a routine we'd go around on the gator with Joe the rest of it would do it all by foot
09:17we would have been walking at least 15 20 k's a day
09:26yeah
09:26oh there's you know there'd have to be maybe 200 acres here
09:33you know it's quite hilly it's thick scrub it's not nice scrub it's prickly scrub
09:39it backs onto a national park this property so it's quite thick out there
09:44this place is huge like this isn't this is a this is more than a needle in our estate
09:53we spent five days I think having a look before they decided they had to go back home and
10:01leave the dog here
10:03so we went to where she was last seen
10:08talking with Jared they said you know try and leave your scent
10:14and then Josh decided he would put his undies there because that was what smelled the most
10:23that it would be his undies and I was like why
10:26we were saying her goodbyes and knowing that we might not see her but we needed to
10:32we needed to continue on with our with our lives
10:35yeah there was tears when they left
10:39I remember Josh saying that when we find her we will be back
10:47and I sort of thought well yeah yeah probably won't see you again
10:52I'm a nurse at the Kangaroo Island Health Service
11:08I was at work when my daughter said that there's a missing sausage dog
11:15and the owners have left and went to the boss and said
11:19I'm going to Stokes Bay to look for a sausage dog
11:22and they're like okay then you do that
11:26I heard that she'd been seen by a local farmer up near McBride's Road
11:37so it was a fair way up from Stokes Bay
11:39I would park and then walk up and down the road with two dogs
11:46and just repeat the process over days
11:49Valerie
11:50calling out Valerie
11:52where is she
11:53and hoping for the best
11:56Valerie
11:58there was a lot of nights where I'd lie there awake thinking
12:03poor Valerie would have been freezing at night
12:06cold, wet, scared probably
12:09Kangaroo Island's got some pretty wild weather
12:14there's all sorts of things I suppose
12:18snakes, eagles, farmers
12:21farmers around here don't appreciate dogs on their property
12:24so they could have shot her
12:25she could have starved
12:26because she was a domesticated dog to start with
12:29Valerie
12:30Valerie
12:33when we got into that first winter
12:37we thought
12:39nah she's
12:40there's no way that she's going to survive
12:42we kind of went through all the five stages of grief
12:54not knowing what happened to her, where she was
13:00that really, was really, really hard
13:03as time went on
13:06you know we actually had to get like another dog
13:08then that helped us a lot with the grieving process

13:18good girl
13:19Valerie had been missing for around 12 months
13:23when we moved from Broken Hill to Aubrey
13:26we boxed up all of her belongings
13:32and then when we moved
13:34Josh had the box
13:35and he said what do you want me to do with this
13:37and I looked at him
13:38and I said no
13:39like I'm too attached
13:40like
13:41there's still a chance
13:42she could be out there
13:43there's still a chance
13:44we could get her home
13:45I can't get rid of this
13:47like we're bringing it with us
13:48today at 3.47 marks one year since we lost our beautiful Valerie
14:08not a day goes by that we don't think of her
14:11and we'll always have hope that one day she'll return
14:14wherever she is
14:15we just wish that she's safe and happy
14:18on the year anniversary of her disappearance
14:24we got a call from a lady
14:26she said that she'd actually seen Valerie
14:28I think it was three times across the year
14:31there was a few times when we'd see her
14:36honestly
14:36her little ears were just flapping in the wind
14:39she was glossy
14:40you know she'd look at us
14:42it was almost like
14:43smile at us and mock us
14:45and say you're not going to catch me
14:46I'm having a great time
14:47Valerie's up there
14:49running running
14:51I can barely see her on the thing
14:53but it's Valerie
14:54we're responsible for quite a large sheep
14:58cattle and cropping enterprise
15:01you know on occasion
15:02we wouldn't see her for two months or three months
15:04and then suddenly we'd see her again
15:06and this sort of went on
15:07she's there
15:09amazing
15:10well we were concerned for her outcome
15:15but at the end of the day
15:16this little dog was just going too fast
15:18we always wanted to keep it very low key
15:22every manny's dog would have been here
15:24had we put a big sign out the front
15:26Valerie here
15:28I contacted Georgia
15:32and let her know that we'd seen the dog on our property
15:36but we didn't actually hear from them again
15:40they obviously may have been a bit sceptical
15:42I'd gone through a lot
15:44and I didn't want to get my hopes up
15:46just to be shattered and back at square one
15:48it's really hard
15:51because I don't know her
15:53she doesn't know me
15:53could it just be some person playing a sick prank on us kind of thing
15:58we didn't know about all of these sightings
16:05wasn't anything that was making it to social media or to our attention
16:10it wasn't until sort of we're into 2025
16:14and then the photograph comes up
16:17Rob's a very good friend of ours
16:24and he came over to help me out with some work
16:27he was out doing some fencing
16:29and spotted Valerie
16:31I was out in the paddock
16:35and just noticed the cattle
16:37all in the corner
16:38facing one direction towards a dam
16:40and I thought
16:42this is a bit strange
16:43what's going on
16:45something black
16:49shot up over the other side
16:50and took off
16:52it was very small
16:55and I managed to get two photos
16:58so I sent the photo to Sharon
17:03and I think I said
17:04is this Valerie
17:06look who that is
17:09look at her little bum
17:12to know that she was alive
17:15and to have proof she was alive
17:16it was
17:17yeah it was pretty good
17:19but we still weren't sure if we were going to catch her
17:22no one really knew what to do
17:24and how to go about it
17:25so when Jared and Lisa
17:28and the Cain Gala crew come on board
17:30and yeah we knew she was in good hands
17:33Lisa's always been an animal rescuer
17:40on a small scale
17:41and then in 2019, 2020
17:43the black summer bushfires
17:45half of Kangaroo Island was burnt down
17:47so we ended up with
17:49literally a couch full of kangaroos
17:51it was a way for us to do something positive
17:54and it just kept growing
17:56I think no animal has ever turned away
18:00so we actually put a post up on Facebook
18:05the local site
18:06and said Kangala Wildlife Rescue
18:08are going to start an official rescue mission
18:11for Valerie
18:12the idea was just to find location
18:15attract her there
18:17and hopefully catch her
18:19sounded simple
18:21it was really early in the pace
18:29when I got a phone call from the advertiser
18:33which is the local Adelaide newspaper
18:35and literally overnight
18:38for some reason that story was picked up
18:40and that's when the chaos really started
18:44well there's fresh hope this morning
18:46for the owners of Valerie
18:48a sausage dog lost for almost 500 days
18:51has been spotted by locals
18:53this photo taken just over a week ago
18:56proving Valerie might still be out there
18:58I wasn't really following it
19:00until I saw on the Channel 7 news
19:02that Valerie had been spotted on KI
19:05and I think
19:06bullshit
19:07I'm a lifelong island resident
19:10and mayor of Kangaroo Island
19:11I've got single phone calls
19:14TV stations everywhere
19:16wanted to talk about Valerie
19:18and I'm going well
19:19I don't really know Valerie
19:20we didn't expect phone calls
19:24from the New York Times
19:25or people like that
19:27and we had to keep reminding ourselves
19:31that she hadn't been caught yet
19:33when Jared first came out here
19:39we went for a tour around
19:41Ivan was the one that said
19:45she's moving along this creek line
19:46this valley line
19:47so we decided to set up the trap here
19:50in this little bit of an opening
19:52so we had six cameras
19:55all up on the posts
19:56and then inside the cage
19:59we had one camera like this
20:01recording 24-7
20:02and then we had two trail cams
20:05which took five second videos
20:07and then we got our first sighting
20:14of her on the camera
20:15Valerie had become a wild dog
20:24I thought it was going to be
20:26as mad as a snake
20:27I thought it would be
20:30just that wild
20:31you'd never rehabilitate it
20:32we knew that it wasn't going to be easy
20:37and we were very mindful
20:39of the psychological side of things
20:41and wanting to get this dog
20:43switching off of
20:45you know fight or flight
20:46so the plan was to get her
20:50comfortable enough to go into the trap
20:52getting more and more confident
20:53more and more calm when she came in
20:56we've set up the cage
20:58with all the comforts of home
21:00for little Valerie
21:01with her toys and teddies
21:02and blankets
21:03so we're just doing that
21:04and then we're off
21:05and hopefully she visits tonight
21:07she was always so alert
21:11like in my mind
21:13it's not going to be a safe place
21:14until she at least sits down
21:16in that trap
21:17lies down
21:18and just goes
21:18this is a safe area
21:20but yeah we didn't see that
21:23for a very long time
21:25they continued to reassure us
21:30that they would do everything
21:31that they possibly could
21:33to bring her home
21:34and at the end of the day
21:36we had to trust
21:38what they were saying
21:38we didn't know how long
21:43this was going to take
21:44you know we thought
21:47it would be a week maybe
21:49but it wasn't
21:50why don't they just run in
21:56and grab her
21:56when she's near the cage
21:58they think a lot about
21:59her transition
22:00and her behaviour
22:01and how she's going to go
22:02going from being in the wild
22:03for a year and a half
22:04to coming back into our house
22:06the pressure of the whole world
22:10looking at you
22:11and the worst case scenario
22:13was that she vanishes
22:15again
22:15and nobody ever knows
22:17what happened to her
22:18I sort of kind of had a plan
22:20didn't know if it was going to work
22:22if it was correct
22:23they said look
22:24it would be absolutely great
22:25if you could send
22:26something that has your scent on it
22:28and we might be able to put that around
22:30to try and trigger her brain
22:32and so I decided to get one of my shirts
22:35and go and exercise
22:37and run around in it
22:38just so that I could get
22:40as sweaty as possible
22:41and that it could have
22:42as much as my scent as possible
22:43it stunk
22:45it was so bad
22:47and then
22:48yeah
22:49mailed that cross to them
22:50just got
22:53some of her t-shirt
22:54and so we're just going to
22:57rub it on the cage
22:58here we go
22:59I remember the real
23:16real turning point
23:17was that video
23:18that Lisa sent me
23:19and she goes into the trap
23:21and she grabs the toy
23:23and she shakes it
23:24and then she sits down
23:26my heart
23:31oh my gosh
23:32she
23:32you know like
23:33that's her
23:34that's her
23:35that's her little girl
23:36she's not some feral wild thing
23:37like you know
23:38you're just looking at her
23:39and you just think
23:39like she wants to come home
23:41like she
23:41she remembers it
23:42she
23:43it's going to be alright
23:44so the next problem
23:48that we encountered
23:49was
23:49the sheer number
23:51of wildlife
23:52that could have
23:53set the trap off
23:54what we had to do
24:03was get a
24:04completely remote
24:05way of shutting
24:07that trap door
24:08from a mobile phone
24:09we ended up
24:12raiding the
24:13local
24:14crash repairers
24:15and
24:15we found this
24:17it was a
24:17what it is
24:18it's actually the motor
24:18that drives
24:19and the electric windows
24:21in a car
24:21so once we installed
24:25that
24:25we sat there
24:26for
24:26night after night
24:28and
24:29she never came
24:31we ended up
24:40realising
24:40how clever
24:41she was
24:42and that
24:42dash hounds are
24:43in general
24:44I mean
24:44she knew
24:45every time
24:45we were down
24:46there
24:46she was
24:47watching us
24:48I think we got
24:51to day six
24:52we stayed there
24:54till 8.30
24:54in the morning
24:55and
24:56still no Valerie
24:57so
24:58we went
25:00home
25:00and
25:01then
25:02about
25:0212.30
25:03who should
25:05mix things up
25:06and appear
25:06during the day
25:07it's like
25:13you've got
25:14to be kidding
25:14me
25:15and
25:18she was
25:18super calm
25:19it was
25:21a matter
25:21of pressing
25:22the button
25:22did the trap
25:24work
25:24yes
25:24the door
25:25released
25:25the dog
25:27is in
25:27the trap
25:28thankfully
25:32it only took
25:33six weeks
25:33it actually
25:40was quite
25:41emotional
25:41because we
25:42just saw
25:43that this
25:43poor little
25:44sweet dog
25:45had just
25:46been longing
25:47for human
25:47interaction
25:48and attention
25:49and cuddles
25:50and love
25:50and all
25:51those things
25:52that had
25:52been missing
25:53and we
25:58could see
25:58that she
25:59was going
25:59to be okay
26:00what's this
26:00is yours
26:03I had a
26:08call from
26:08Lisa
26:09she called
26:11me and
26:11she said
26:12we've got
26:12it
26:13that
26:14will go
26:15down
26:15as one
26:16of the
26:16best

26:46absolutely
26:47no doubt
26:48that somebody
26:49unknown

26:51for the duration
26:52while it was
26:52out there
26:53that little dog
26:55could not have
26:55come out
26:56looking so good
26:57so shiny
26:57without somebody
26:58providing it
26:59with a bit of
