00:00Welcome to Ireland's Fittest Family.
00:06It's the first of our quarterfinals here at the legendary Hell and Back,
00:10and the competition is really heating up.
00:12Tonight, it's Davie Fitz and the Smiths,
00:14Andrew Trimble and the McKennas,
00:16Michael Darrow with the Burns,
00:18each of them battling it out for a place in the semifinals.
00:21But tonight, one of them will lose a family.
00:24Let the games begin.
00:26Come on, Mum.
00:27Come on!
00:28Let's go, go, go, go.
00:33You're there.
00:33You're going to be another few years to go.
00:36Come on!
00:37Two minutes.
00:38Let's go, let's go.
00:39Come on, lift her up.
00:41Grit your teeth.
00:42Welcome to our first quarterfinal in the infamous bog of Hell and Back.
01:04With lots of muck, sweat and tears ahead, it's time to raise the stakes yet again.
01:10So let's find out who's got some skin in the game tonight.
01:13But first, let's take a quick look back on how we got here.
01:18Over an intense three weeks of heats, 12 families became nine as three families crashed out of the competition.
01:25Get up!
01:26Some coaches were luckier than others.
01:28Yes!
01:29I'm absolutely buzzing.
01:30And some were fighting to stay in the game.
01:33You can't afford a mistake and I'm having too many at the moment.
01:36Michael Darrow won and a nil.
01:39That kills me to say it.
01:41Over the next three weeks, we will see our coaches and families take part in some of the most competitive and intense events this competition has ever seen.
01:49Come on, dig in!
01:51Next week in our second quarterfinal, it's Donika's Linehan's versus Michael Darrow's Walsh's versus Andrew's Hilliard's.
02:01That's it, Mikey. You catch him. You catch him.
02:03Ten seconds and you're done, but work!
02:05Our third and last quarterfinal will be Anna's Cars versus Davies McDonough's versus Ellen Stewart's.
02:13Under, under, under!
02:16But it's this week's quarterfinal that we're here to see.
02:19Davies Smiths from Loud, Michael Darrow's Burns from Dublin, Andrew's McKenna's from Monaghan.
02:27All our quarterfinalist families will be hoping to get a place in our semifinals in our brand new location, Draw a Deport.
02:35But only one family will make it to the final, get to the top of those ramps and win the title of Ireland's fittest family 2025.
02:44Andrew, Michael Darrow, Davie, here we go again.
02:48Davie, I hate to point out the obvious, but you are probably the most senior member of coaches right now.
02:54How are you feeling?
02:55What I'm thinking is I'm the oldest standing by a long shot, right?
02:58And I'm not as mobile as the two boys, that's what I'm thinking.
03:01So they probably have that advantage on me.
03:03But, like, I think this year it's different.
03:06What have we, we've three teams racing against each other.
03:08I'm kind of looking forward to the carnage of what's going to happen.
03:11And looking forward to seeing how the boys, they're so relaxed and chilled out now.
03:14I have a feeling that's not going to be the way.
03:17For you, like, how are you feeling?
03:19What's your tactic going into it?
03:21Yeah, here we are, the famous bog from the telly.
03:23The tactics, like, they're kind of your cardio and strength.
03:27Like, boy, the burns are strong.
03:28They are strong.
03:28They're all buff lads.
03:30But I was like, this is all about hearts.
03:31It's all about just grinding it out.
03:32The bog is an experience, right?
03:35And this is your first time going up against the legend that is Davey Fitz.
03:39So how does that feel?
03:41Yeah, I mean, Magadar himself, we're out of our depth in terms of experience.
03:45This lad here is a wily old veteran when it comes to the bog.
03:48So a bit of preparation, but just trying not to overthink it as well.
03:51You know, like, bring the goggles, bring the armbands.
03:54Let's see how we get on.
03:55Worst case scenario, just get them across the finish line.
03:58You really have no idea what's coming, do you?
04:01Well, lads, may the mud be with you.
04:02I'll see you all back here at the finish line.
04:04Best of luck.
04:05Here's how the quarterfinals work.
04:10Tonight, our families will take on Battle of the Bog and then the cruel Valley of Pain.
04:15They'll be awarded three points for first place, two points for second place, and one point for third.
04:20The points are added together and the top family qualifies for the semifinals.
04:25The bottom two families will have to face it off in the eliminator to see who else gets a semifinal place.
04:35Nothing says family bonding like dragging your loved one through a disgusting bog.
04:40And this is the only race where you're pretty much guaranteed to lose a shoe and your dignity.
04:44This is Battle of the Bog.
04:46This is a three-family relay race where two members of each family start Battle of the Bog with a cold, watery cargo net crawl, followed by an A-frame climb.
04:57From here, the family pairs must work together as they begin to navigate the muddy bog.
05:01A series of under and over logs of different heights and sizes await before plunging back into the deepest, muddiest, longest and most draining part of the course.
05:11Next, they have family pair standing on the pallet.
05:13The next two from the family can start the race following the same route.
05:17The clock only stops when all four family members are standing on the pallet.
05:23Any concerns now? The bog is nervous to meet the burns. Never mind. Not the other way around.
05:27I'll keep going. Because I have to face them three lads if I don't.
05:32I think the nerves have kind of gone out the window now. It's more kind of confident and excited and ready to get the job done.
05:37We're going to give it a go.
05:39Cian and Cormac will do the damage and the girls will bring it home.
05:41We like Mock and we're used to that. We all grew up and doing that there.
05:45So hopefully we can push through it and get through.
05:50Ready to go in purple are Cathy and Sean Smith.
05:53In pink, Paul and Anne Byrne.
05:55And in red, Cormac and Caelan McKenna.
06:01Three, two, one.
06:04Referee Paula Donovan gets us underway. This is Battle of the Bog.
06:08There's an early lead for the McKenna boys.
06:11Followed by the burns wearing pink.
06:14The Smith family in purple.
06:16So this is one of these A frames.
06:18Up they go. Soaking wet already.
06:21And out front, Cormac and Caelan McKenna.
06:23They've made a very quick start.
06:25Andrew Trimble will be delighted.
06:28So you get a perfect idea of just how tricky the terrain is here.
06:32But this is easy compared to what's coming later.
06:34But Cormac and Caelan McKenna are making this look straightforward.
06:38It's anything but.
06:38The remaining members of the family waiting back at the start line.
06:43Come on, yeah.
06:44Andrew is very calm.
06:46Now it starts to get really muddy and sludgy.
06:51TV Fitz can't believe it.
06:53I'll tell you what, the McKenna's have started very well.
06:55But the Byrne family and the Smith family are a bit stuck.
07:00It's understandable.
07:01Last bit. Last bit.
07:02So they are very nearly at the finish line.
07:06Cormac and Caelan McKenna.
07:08Get yourself up first.
07:09Michael Darrell McCauley working closely with the Byrne family.
07:12So that is impressive.
07:14They have a sprint down to the finishing talent.
07:17Cormac and Caelan are there.
07:19And off go Sharon and Colleen McKenna.
07:24They said beforehand that they like the muck.
07:27And the Smith family and the Byrne family are not liking this one bit.
07:31Keep moving. Keep moving.
07:32I'll have a look. Have a look.
07:33So that's Colleen McKenna moving well.
07:39So Ann Byrne with her son Paul.
07:47That's mom Sharon McKenna.
07:49There's three mammies in this race.
07:52There's Cathy Smith.
07:55That's Sean with her.
07:58There's a bit of a traffic jam here.
08:00But there's no issues at all for the McKenna family.
08:03They are flying.
08:05Sharon McKenna picking a line.
08:06She's happy with it.
08:07Now she's gone past Paul and Ann Byrne.
08:09Lapping the Byrne family.
08:10Can she lap the Smith family as well?
08:15So Davey's staying calm at the moment.
08:17Yeah, nice one.
08:18With the Smith family.
08:19And Sharon McKenna just getting stronger and stronger.
08:23Her daughter Colleen is ahead of her.
08:25Her two sons are up at the finishing talent.
08:27But this is really hard for the Byrnes.
08:28For Paul and Ann.
08:30Just keep it going.
08:32That's it.
08:32So Michael Dara and Macaulay will be important here for the Byrne family.
08:37Come on.
08:38So that's a familiar sight, isn't it?
08:40We see people being dragged along the top of the bog.
08:43That was Cathy Smith.
08:44Or that is Cathy Smith with her son Sean.
08:48Give her a hand.
08:49Give her a hand.
08:50Give her a hand.
08:50We're going nowhere until you get her up.
08:51So Ann wants to try and get up.
08:53It's easier said than done.
08:54Colleen McKenna has gone past the Smith family and her mom, Sharon, about to do exactly the same.
09:01So the McKenna's have left both families now in this race.
09:05Get her up to the bank.
09:06Get her up to the bank.
09:06Just slowing down a little bit for Sharon.
09:08Colleen is just ahead of her.
09:10This is the toughest part of the course.
09:11So every inch of it, every centimetre of it is tough.
09:15But Andrew Trimble, very, very impressed with what he's seen.
09:20But it's a huge battle.
09:21It's a grind for the other families.
09:22And Byrne has Paul just ahead of her.
09:28She just won't give up, though.
09:30She is not giving up.
09:33So there's the McKenna's in red.
09:35But they've lost some time.
09:36The Smith family, Cathy and Sean have gained ground.
09:40And we saw the McKenna's lap them a little while ago.
09:43But the Smiths have hit back.
09:45The McKenna's, though, still a lap ahead.
09:49So this is really tough for Anne and Paul Byrne.
09:53It's really tough for everybody.
09:56Cathy and Sean Smith from County Louth.
09:59There is Sharon McKenna from Monaghan.
10:03Colleen McKenna has got up that ladder.
10:05About to be joined by her mom, Sharon.
10:08But Colleen makes it to the finish line.
10:10That's an impressive performance.
10:12She's only 17 years of age.
10:13Three out of the four there.
10:14About to be joined by Sharon.
10:16But Paul and Anne Byrne are still battling away.
10:19So here is Sharon McKenna.
10:24About to finish out battle of the ball.
10:26This is some performance by the McKenna family.
10:29All four are up on that pallet.
10:31While the other two families haven't even started their second lap.
10:37You're not going to be able to slug your way through.
10:38You're going to have to use your legs.
10:40So, well, Michael Darren-McCauley.
10:41This is his first experience of this.
10:43To see just how demanding it is.
10:46There is Sean Smith dragging mom Cathy along the surface of the bog.
10:51The Barnes are still battling away with it.
10:53Get out. We need to get second. Come on.
10:54So, Davey wants second place.
10:56They are about to get up that ladder.
10:59Cathy and Sean Smith.
11:00Quick. Get up there. Get up there.
11:03So, there's Paul and Anne Byrne.
11:04And here comes Sean and Cathy Smith.
11:06About to finish their first lap.
11:08The other members of their family can't see what's going on here.
11:10So, they have to be told to start.
11:12And it's Mark and Adam Smith who start.
11:14You saw John Byrne in pink there.
11:16He was dying to get going.
11:18It's just a waiting game for them.
11:19But not for Adam and Mark Smith.
11:21They're underway.
11:22And this is the second lap for the Smith family.
11:24Just keep moving. Keep moving.
11:26The Byrnes, John and Jack waiting down at the start.
11:28Mind, they are not involved in the race yet because Paul and Anne can't get to the finish line.
11:33No matter how hard they try.
11:35That's it. Just grind it out. Grind it out.
11:37And it is a grind. It's a war of attrition.
11:41Adam is 19. Mark is 15.
11:43Keep going.
11:44They had to wait down at the start line.
11:47But they're in second place.
11:51Keep going. Keep going.
11:53So, the McKenna is waiting for the other families to finish it out.
11:58Davey said to Cathy and Sean he wants it second place.
12:01This is what they have at the moment.
12:03That's it. That's it.
12:04And the Byrnes are still stuck.
12:05Get through them.
12:06And now, Adam and Mark.
12:09Well, they're up very close with Paul and Anne Byrne, aren't they?
12:12Get out of the lane.
12:15And Michael Daryl McCauley wants them to take a different line and get away from his family members.
12:19And that all is very up close and personal, isn't it?
12:22Grab the other side. Come on. Keep walking.
12:24I understand that Adam and Mark just want to get this done.
12:26Now, they've moved away from Paul and Anne, who are very definitely stuck in the bog.
12:31There's a little bit of movement there.
12:32Paul is doing everything he can.
12:34A reminder that the Byrnes are still on their first lap.
12:37John and Jack waiting down at the start line.
12:40But Adam and Mark, this is the second lap for the Smith family.
12:43And they're about to claim second place.
12:46Three out of the four up there.
12:47They're just waiting for Mark to join them.
12:50And it'll be second place for the Smith family from County Loud.
12:54And that is what they've claimed right now.
12:58The drama continues, though, for the Byrne family, for Anne and Paul.
13:02The finish line is still a fair bit away.
13:07So Paul is trying absolutely anything and everything to help his mother.
13:13But you know what? She is still battling with this.
13:16She's still fighting.
13:17Push through. Push through.
13:19Stand me up.
13:21Just keep moving. Keep moving.
13:23Come on, Anne.
13:24That's it. That's it, Paul. Yeah, go on. Get ahead. Get ahead.
13:31Come on.
13:34This is the last of the slog.
13:36Yes.
13:38I'm good.
13:41Come on, you're doing great.
13:43It's soft.
13:49Horrendous.
13:49Oh, my God.
13:51I couldn't get up.
13:52Couldn't get my feet up.
13:53Couldn't pull them out.
13:54Couldn't, couldn't move.
13:57Never, ever thought it would be that bad.
13:58Horrendous.
13:59So, finally, Paul and Anne are away from that dreaded bog.
14:02They'll never want to see it again.
14:04But it's been a brilliant performance by the two of them.
14:06In particular, Anne, she got stuck there time after time, but she didn't give up.
14:10There's no other grandparents on the show that's doing what she did and, like, the grandkids
14:14will be...
14:14There's no other grandparents going to do.
14:17They'll be delighted to see their granny on there.
14:19I'll give it to Anne.
14:19Come on, lads.
14:22Finish it out.
14:22Well done, lads.
14:23Keep going.
14:24Finish it out.
14:24Finish it out.
14:25And here they come, Anne and Paul Byrne getting a great reception from the other family
14:33members who have finished this out, and now finished, and John and Jack Byrne can get going.
14:44Yeah, it's not in, um, it's not in my mother's DNA.
14:47It's not in our DNA to give up.
14:49We're going to get through it no matter what.
14:55I'd say the tough part was the last bit just before the ladder to get onto the bridge.
14:59So I must have got stuck in the same spot as Anne because all of a sudden just, no,
15:03my body shut down, like, it wasn't letting me move.
15:06Yeah, just regroup, go again.
15:08Maybe think of a different strategy for the next challenge, and, uh, as I said, we're just
15:12going until the wheels fall off.
15:13We ain't done yet.
15:16And there's the point on the board as John and Jack finish the race.
15:20Byrne family, I mean, the bog's no joke.
15:23We know that.
15:24Well done on getting through it.
15:26I know right now you probably don't feel too great because you're exhausted.
15:29No, I feel great.
15:30Of course.
15:30That was easy.
15:32It's very tough, though.
15:33Very tough, but I'm very proud of my man to get through that, so no matter how tough
15:36it was, it just kept going, so.
15:37It was an unbelievable achievement, like, like, if they were wearing, like, these calorie
15:41counters, let's say they're on a million, like, they were hacking it, like, and, again,
15:46never gave up, like, slogged it out to the end, so it was amazing.
15:49Oh, it was very tough.
15:51It was right there.
15:51It was a lot higher than I thought it would be.
15:53I actually couldn't get out of it, only for Sean.
15:56Sean was just amazing.
15:58Really was amazing.
15:59The bog is the bog.
16:01The bog is the bog.
16:02So it suits some, doesn't suit others.
16:04Second is good.
16:05McKenna family.
16:07It has to feel good.
16:08It does definitely feel good.
16:09Just had the power on, keep going.
16:11It went better than planned, I think.
16:13Luckily, we got away well at the start and then started to get stickier at the end, but
16:18we were both sort of knack and knack.
16:19We were saying to each other, so if we needed help, we were there for each other, so I'll
16:23be definitely happy with attitude.
16:25Andrew, are you so proud of your family?
16:27Oh, they did brilliant.
16:28They absolutely smashed it, yeah.
16:29Oh, McKenna's, well done.
16:31Andrew, congratulations.
16:32A flying star to the day.
16:34There's fit, and then there's the McKenna's.
16:37Now let's take a look at the scoreboard.
16:40The McKenna's are in first place with three points.
16:43The Smiths are in second place with two points.
16:45And the Burns are in last place with one point.
16:48Keep it going, go, go, go, go, go, go.
16:54Quickly, quickly, get it to the worst.
17:12I'm in the thick of here, everybody knows.
17:15They know me where it snows.
17:17Welcome back to Ireland's Fittest Family.
17:20It's the first of our quarterfinals here at Hell and Back.
17:23And before the break, we saw all of our families fight their way through Battle of the Box.
17:34Andrew Trimble's McKenna's came out on top as they put in an extraordinary performance.
17:40Davey Smith's family got stuck in the mud as they came in second place.
17:43But Michael Dara's Byrne family got really stuck in the mud and came in third place.
17:54Life is full of ups and downs, and it's always handy to have a little safety net.
17:57We decided to take those life lessons and turn it into an event.
18:01This is Valley of Pain.
18:03This course will open up a whole world of pain for our quarterfinalists.
18:08It's Valley of Pain.
18:10Our families start on straw bales.
18:13Then they face an exhausting run along a winding pathway.
18:17Next, it's a series of ups and downs before tackling two angled walls.
18:22One is three metres high and the next 3.6 metres high.
18:25After that, a run down to the first of two cargo nets.
18:28One they must climb over and one they have to crawl under.
18:31To finish, all four family members have to climb up to the top of the Irish table.
18:35It's 2.4 metres high.
18:37The clock stops when all four are standing behind the rope
18:40and the fastest family will score those vital three points.
18:47Since the heats, the coaches have been working with their families
18:50to get fighting fish for the quarterfinals.
18:54Michael Dara organised a fun day out for his family, the Byrnes, from Dublin.
18:58The Byrnes family, all very strong, fit, athletic.
19:03But there's a bit of that kind of balance and coordination that might be needed.
19:09Welcome to my humble abode.
19:12He said he hasn't done it before, but he's definitely got a few secret sessions in.
19:15Lift our legs with our core, push back.
19:18Legs go to the outside.
19:20Yeah, once you're upside down.
19:23I think my ma, again, always excels.
19:26It's like, she's obviously nervous getting started, getting going,
19:29but she knows it's a bit of fun and she jumps into it and has a good crack.
19:33Michael, I think he wants to join me to circus.
19:38Yes, really good.
19:40Look, we had a great day today.
19:42Definitely learned about balance, about core.
19:44Hopefully we can take some of these learnings into the next day
19:47and blow the competition around.
19:52Michael Dara and the Byrne family, here we go.
19:55A valley of pain.
19:56I think we have it to us.
19:57We have our strengths.
19:57We know how we're going to do.
19:58We know how we're going to get up the first one.
20:00Now we're going to get up the second wall.
20:01We're good to go.
20:02Anne, the knee's bandaged up.
20:04Yeah.
20:04Is it all right?
20:05Yeah.
20:06Grand, not a badder.
20:07Just a bit bruised, a bit swollen, but grand.
20:09I banged it off something.
20:12I twisted it.
20:13I don't really know.
20:15I just, it's bruised and swollen.
20:18But I'm not worried about it with my knee.
20:21I'll just do what I can.
20:23You need to be careful for it.
20:24There's actually a lot of running in this.
20:25There's a lot of climbing.
20:27So it's just, we're going to have to keep an eye on it.
20:29The docs, they were like, listen, we can call this here.
20:32You know what I mean?
20:32And then she was like, no, strap me up, throw me back in there.
20:35I'm ready to go.
20:36So yeah, she's fired up and she's going to get through it, you know?
20:40Lining up for the Byrne family.
20:42Jack and Anne.
20:44And John and Paul.
20:47Three, two, one.
20:50This is Valley of Pain.
20:52The Byrne family finished last in event one, the Battle of the Bog.
20:57They need a good display here to avoid the Eliminator.
21:00So it's a gentle start.
21:04Perfect, Anne, that's perfect.
21:05I've heard that mum Anne is strapped up the left knee.
21:09Took a little bit of damage there.
21:11You can see that strapping.
21:12But Anne is moving well.
21:16So up and over that bank.
21:20And there is Jack Byrne.
21:21He had a go at that first wall.
21:23It's three meters high.
21:24They're really designed for the families to help each other.
21:27But Jack won't let this wall beat him.
21:30Wow.
21:30Just as I said, they're meant to help each other.
21:32He's done it himself.
21:33Brilliant.
21:35So they need a big performance here.
21:37Yep.
21:38Perfect, perfect.
21:38And they've got two up there.
21:39That's Paul up joining his cousin Jack.
21:41And they want Anne and John to get a move on.
21:44A minute and a half now on the clock.
21:46Here's Anne and John is going to help her up.
21:50And the two lads will pull her to the top.
21:54She's experienced a lot of those kind of things today.
21:56But is still battling away.
21:58And still showing up for her family.
22:00Let's go, let's go.
22:02So this wall, three meters high.
22:04The next one is a little bit higher.
22:05Shoulder, shoulder, shoulder.
22:06Let's go.
22:06And here it is, 3.6 meters high.
22:09Me and you.
22:09Here, here, here.
22:11Go.
22:11So whatever works, they can climb up whatever way they want.
22:15So Paul is going to be lifted to the top or pushed to the top now.
22:20There he is.
22:20Perfect, let's go, let's go.
22:21Two and a half minutes.
22:22The Byrne family will set the target for the other two families to try and beat.
22:27As you get full extension on this, full extension.
22:29There you go, there you go.
22:30So there's Anne up again.
22:32The knee is holding up well.
22:33Here, next year, Jack, here, last.
22:38So Anne is over the far side.
22:41Let's go, let's go.
22:41And here come the other two lads.
22:43Let's go, let's go, let's go.
22:44Let's go, let's go, let's go, let's go now.
22:47So Anne heading away towards the cargo nets.
22:50Perfect, let's go, let's go.
22:53So they're away from those walls and the families have to climb over this cargo net.
23:02And as you can see, there's a lot of movement as the others take it on.
23:07Let's go, let's go.
23:07And Anne is very nearly at the end of that first net.
23:15And Jack is staying back to help out.
23:17Let's go, let's go, let's go.
23:17And John and Paul going under this cargo net.
23:20It's the last little bit.
23:22Back on ground here, let's go.
23:23Anne has got through there, so they've got to crawl under the next net.
23:30Let's go, let's go, let's go, last few, last few.
23:30And Jack is just holding that up for her to make it that little bit easier.
23:34So she's picked a line she's happy with.
23:36You can see there are ridges underneath it.
23:38Let's go, let's go.
23:39So all that's left for the Byrne family is the Irish table.
23:45That's 2.4 metres high.
23:46That's it, yeah, lift it up, lift it up for it, lift it up for it, lift it up for it.
23:50Come on, man, let's go.
23:51Yeah, get up, get up, get up.
23:52So that is hard on the knees, isn't it, crawling along underneath it.
23:55Come on, let's go.
23:56So that's John Byrne.
23:57Byrne has very nearly made it up, and he needs a bit of a hoosh, that's a technical term, but it works.
24:04So Anne and Paul together.
24:07Get up, get up, get up, give me Paul, Paul, give him a hand, let's go, let's go.
24:10So Paul have been told to give a bit of a hand there.
24:14So here comes Anne, what a day she's had, what a hero she's been for her family.
24:19They've gone through five minutes now.
24:22Give him a hand, give him a hand behind.
24:23And they all have to stand up there, they have.
24:25Clock stops at 5.16, just how good that is, we'll find out.
24:29How are you?
24:31Anne!
24:32How's it going, lads?
24:33There's always, there's always.
24:35Good job, job.
24:36Good job, Jackson.
24:37Anne, come over here beside me.
24:39Mind you, you can lean on me now for a second, come on.
24:41You're an absolute superstar.
24:43How are you feeling?
24:44I'm very tired.
24:45I know, I don't blame you.
24:47It's not easy.
24:48No.
24:49No, not in slices.
24:50Very hard.
24:51It's quite heartwarming to see your three boys, you know, the whole way through,
24:55taking care of you, but especially at the end there.
24:57Yeah.
24:58Oh, they're very good.
24:59Yeah.
25:00It's amazing.
25:01Like, I mean, where would you get it?
25:02You won't see many other mammies doing this.
25:07Next up, it was Davy's turn to gather the Smiths for some serious training.
25:11I brought the Smiths here today.
25:13I wanted to put them through hell.
25:14I wanted to really test them mentally.
25:16I was going to kill Davy, yeah.
25:18I thought we were just going to come down for a little bit of a chat and that, but I didn't
25:21realise we were going to do a session.
25:23The biggest thing for me is to work as a unit.
25:26To get everybody to perform to the best of their ability is massive.
25:29Sometimes that's not always going as fast as you can go.
25:32Sometimes it's getting the best out of someone that's struggling.
25:36Yeah, I've learned a lot of how we work as a team.
25:38And myself and Davy have done the HIIT session today to see how we work together.
25:43At the beginning, we set off without Mam and we found out then.
25:48We realised then we had to drag her with us.
25:50And coming to the end then, we got in 15, 14 seconds quicker, I think it was.
25:55So we've proved that we can do it.
25:56So we just need to stick at it now.
25:58We tested him.
25:59We tested him today and I think we definitely met improvement.
26:02I thought it was a good day all around, yeah.
26:06Davey and the Smith family, here we go.
26:12Valley of Pain.
26:13Now, Davey, you have a little bit of an advantage with Valley of Pain
26:17because you've been here before so you know the set up.
26:19We're looking forward to this.
26:21There's a bit more than just going into a bog running on this.
26:24There will be a bit of strategy.
26:26Very important to get the walls right and how you get up and who you get up.
26:30So we've a bit of talking to do on that and see if we can get it right.
26:34You're good there, right?
26:35He'll get there from there.
26:36Look at the reach.
26:37Yeah, sorry.
26:38Yeah, he would.
26:39Look at the reach.
26:40He's going to get there, right?
26:41Woo!
26:42My first reaction was, wow.
26:44High walls, cargo nets.
26:47Yeah, it's going to be a tough one for me, not for the boys.
26:50Yeah, the three of us are going to try to help Mam along the whole way and pull her along
26:53as I get the fastest time as we can.
26:55Lining up for the Smith family are Adam and Cathy, Mark and Sean.
27:01Three, two, one.
27:04Go, go, go.
27:05The Smith family from County Louth were second in event one today.
27:095.16 is the time set down by the Burns.
27:14So after finishing second in the first event, they need the fastest time here to avoid the
27:21Eliminator.
27:22Pick up the ground.
27:23That's great room and well done.
27:25So Cathy been helped along by two of her sons.
27:27Come on, push her up.
27:28Up on top and wait for it.
27:29Catch his head.
27:30Let's go, let's go, let's go.
27:31So approaching half a minute.
27:33There's Cathy and this is the first of the wall, three meters high.
27:37So teamwork, as we have seen, absolutely vital here.
27:46So the aim of the game is to get Cathy up to the top of the first wall.
27:53And whatever way you get up there, it doesn't matter.
27:56Stand anywhere, stand everywhere.
27:58And Cathy is now up at the top of that first wall.
28:01There's Adam Smith.
28:02He made it to the top of his own.
28:04He's got a strapping on his left wrist.
28:06Set up, set up.
28:07So they are away from, just about to be away, all four of them from the first wall.
28:13Second one is higher.
28:15Get up to the top.
28:16So 5.16, the time to beat after the Byrne family were first to go.
28:24So they were pretty slick and quick at the first wall.
28:28So Cathy is almost at the top of the second one.
28:32And she's come back down and Davey is sounding and looking very stressed.
28:37They are losing time here.
28:39Pull yourself, ma'am.
28:40They started the race so well, but this is costing them priceless seconds.
28:47So Cathy gets away from the second wall and she's up to the first of the cargo nets.
28:52Oh, there's another mistake there.
28:54And this is not going well for the Smith family.
28:59That wall is 0.6 of a meter higher than the other one, but it makes all the difference, doesn't it?
29:04Or can.
29:05And it did there.
29:06And the Smith boys need to get a move on.
29:10Cathy's on the first cargo net.
29:12Crawl over this.
29:13And now all four of them are there and they need to make up some time.
29:19That was a big leap and a fall, but everything's okay.
29:25So Cathy has got a little bit stuck.
29:29That's perfectly understandable because this net is not at all stable.
29:35We've seen people try and run over it, crawl over it.
29:38It really is whatever you're comfortable with.
29:42So Cathy Smith is very nearly there.
29:46They still have one more cargo net to deal with that.
29:50They have to crawl under this.
29:52And as we have seen, there are ridges, but that's good teamwork as the net is held up.
29:58So Dave is not impressed at all.
29:59Just kind of punching the air.
30:04So approaching four minutes now.
30:07The Irish table is 2.4 meters high.
30:10Davey wants them to really push it now.
30:14And this, well, getting up that Irish table, it's much harder than having to climb up a wall
30:19because there's no place to put your feet.
30:22Unless you stand on somebody.
30:24Where are you getting pushed up?
30:27So Davey doesn't look impressed at all.
30:30They're going to beat the time set down by the Byrne family.
30:33But we've still got the McKenna's left to go.
30:38And the Smith family from County Lowth complete the task in 4 minutes and 23 seconds.
30:42They're the leaders now.
30:43Davey, that felt fast.
30:46No, it's not fast enough.
30:48We made too many mistakes.
30:49We made two mistakes out there.
30:50Can't do it.
30:51Did they give an unreal effort?
30:52They gave everything.
30:53They were absolutely brilliant.
30:54Yeah.
30:55Absolutely brilliant effort-wise, but you can't make mistakes.
30:58Every day is a learning there.
31:00But, not bad.
31:02They did okay.
31:03We know we could have knocked maybe 30 seconds off that time.
31:06Cathy, it's not easy.
31:08But you didn't give up.
31:09You were ahead of the lads.
31:10You were straight down to the cargo nets.
31:11You took them on as best that you could.
31:13How are you?
31:16Battered and bruised.
31:17But it was really tough.
31:18It was tough.
31:19That net.
31:20It's very...
31:21You're very unstable on it.
31:22I'm very proud of my mum because she's obviously years ahead of us
31:26and she's still keeping up with us and planning on and trying to stick with us.
31:29So, I'm most proud of my mum.
31:31We've done it.
31:32Done the best I could.
31:33And the boys were great.
31:34Pushing me up and pulling me and dragging me.
31:37And they were brilliant.
31:38They were just...
31:39Their effort was absolutely brilliant.
31:41I'm so proud of them.
31:42Can't fault the effort.
31:43Everyone gave 100% and it was brilliant, that team effort, yeah.
31:47Finally, Andrew and the McKennas made a day out of it.
31:50Yeah, I brought the McKennas down here to Monaghan Rugby Club.
31:53I wanted to introduce them to rugby.
31:55We're going to do a wee time trial.
31:57Andrew's very passionate about rugby, as you can tell.
32:00As you hit that cone, I'm going to say to you, Donika or Davie Fitz.
32:08Nice killing, very good.
32:10Mummy's tackling was a bit comical, to be honest.
32:13But she's not going to have a career in rugby anyway, so...
32:15Yeah, good stuff.
32:19Andrew's a very patient coach.
32:21He's a relaxed guy and he brings that into us too.
32:24We're confident in him and I know he's confident in us.
32:28Come on, let's go, come on back.
32:30It feels like they're so good.
32:32They're so strong, they're so fit.
32:34There's a bit of pace about them as well.
32:36Competent.
32:37They tick every box.
32:38McKennas on three.
32:39One, two, three.
32:40McKennas!
32:41Oh yeah, I definitely think today helped.
32:43It's a wee bit more team bonding, getting to know our coach, Andrew.
32:46And good for the family to even be, spending more time together.
32:49Well, well, well, Andrew McKennas.
32:54You must be feeling quite smug coming into Valley of Pain.
32:58No, I'd say we're just going to try our very best.
33:00That's all I'd think.
33:01See, this is nice now.
33:02You sound lovely and modest.
33:03That's a good way to go about this.
33:05How are you feeling after this morning though?
33:07Oh, we're definitely happy with how we performed in the bog,
33:10but we don't want to get big heads and hopefully at least we'll get through this one as well,
33:14without fighting the Eliminator.
33:16It's up to us just to do the event as fast as we can, but not fumble, not make any mistakes.
33:21As long as they pace themselves, they don't blow up or they don't, you know,
33:25technically they're able to get over the walls and up onto the platform.
33:29It's only things that, like little things that could go wrong, could hamper us at this stage.
33:34I think the pressure definitely is on because we want to get home this evening without the Eliminator.
33:39Ready to go for the McKennas are Sharon and Colleen.
33:44Cormac and Calon.
33:46Three, two, one.
33:50Well, the question here is, can the McKennas make it two wins out of two for Andrew Trimble?
33:56If they can, they would soar into the semifinals.
34:01They were brilliant in the first event.
34:04Careful on those turns, Sharon, yeah.
34:06Will they be able to back it up and win again?
34:09So that is Sharon McKenna at the back of the pack there.
34:14The two boys setting the pace.
34:17And pacing here important.
34:19That was really quick.
34:20Send Cormac over.
34:22So let's see how they do at the first of the two walls.
34:26Yeah, that's been done.
34:28Well done.
34:29There's one up there now.
34:30Yeah, Cormac, grab.
34:31Well, there's a clear strategy, isn't there?
34:33Right, Colleen there.
34:34Yeah, well done.
34:35And it has very nearly got them away from wall number one.
34:38So that is Sharon.
34:39Get her other hand there.
34:40Mom Sharon being held to the top.
34:42Yeah, well done.
34:43And there she is.
34:47So a minute and 15 seconds.
34:51Kaylon is the last to get up to the top.
34:53Same again.
34:54In position.
34:55So here they are at the second wall.
34:57It's 60 centimetres higher.
34:59Doesn't seem like a lot, but it does make a difference.
35:01Yes, well done. Good man.
35:02So they've got one up there.
35:03Andrew Trimble is just quiet encouragement from the coach.
35:06And then put your back up against it.
35:08Killing.
35:09And then getting her shoulders.
35:10Yeah, well done. Good stuff.
35:11But you can hear that strategy again.
35:13Same again, Colleen.
35:15It's all very cool and calm and collected.
35:19Yeah, one arm each, no?
35:21This feels like a well-oiled machine, doesn't it?
35:24It's really slick.
35:25So they're away from the wall.
35:27Not even two minutes done.
35:29If we had a split time from obstacle to obstacle,
35:32they would be well in front.
35:34And there's two minutes now.
35:35Oh, nice, lads.
35:36This is the cargo net over the top of it.
35:38That was some leap from Colleen.
35:40She nearly did that in the one go.
35:42Underneath.
35:43If anything, they're speeding up.
35:45Okay.
35:46So Sharon is last.
35:48Losing a tiny bit of time.
35:50But they seem to have a fair bit of time to play with.
35:53At the top.
35:54At GAA Mad Family.
35:56And, well, all the members of their club back home in Monaghan
36:00will be very proud with the way they have performed here.
36:04Hold it up this side.
36:05Hold it up this side.
36:06Okay.
36:07So Sharon McKenna is losing a little bit of time.
36:09She's caught in that second cargo net.
36:12Yeah, nice.
36:13Let's go, Sharon.
36:15Let's go, Sharon.
36:16So Andrew dividing his time.
36:18Kind of splitting the family up.
36:20So Sharon's still underneath that net.
36:23Good stuff.
36:24Well done.
36:25One out of the four up to the top of the Irish table.
36:27Look at this time.
36:28Not even three minutes.
36:29Here comes Colleen.
36:30And she's just standing on her brother.
36:32She's using her brother as a table.
36:34Good stuff.
36:36There's more instructions from Andrew Trimble.
36:39Well done, Sharon.
36:40Good stuff.
36:41So Sharon is the third of the McKenna family
36:43to approach the top of the Irish table.
36:46This has been quite a performance.
36:48They were brilliant in the first event today.
36:50And they've backed it up.
36:51They dealt with the pressure.
36:52And this is some showing.
36:54A force to be reckoned with.
36:55The McKenna family.
36:56They win.
36:57Three minutes and 20 seconds.
37:00I actually think if I blinked I was going to miss that.
37:02You were so quick.
37:03Hopefully we were quick enough though.
37:05Andrew.
37:06That like you.
37:07I know this is your first time experiencing Valley of Pain.
37:10And Ireland's for this family in general.
37:12But you have to feel a little bit smug right now.
37:14Outrageously smug is where I'm going.
37:15I wish Donika was here to see this actually as well.
37:18But yeah, they did unbelievably well.
37:20They're just class.
37:21They're just all amazing athletes.
37:23Good crack as well.
37:25They're down there.
37:26They've just got a nice approach even before.
37:28They're laughing and giggling and slagging each other.
37:30So yeah, they went really well.
37:34Over to the scoreboard.
37:35And after both events, the McKennas remain in first place with six points.
37:39The Smiths are in second place with four points.
37:42And the Burns, they're in last place with two points.
37:45So that means the McKennas will be going straight through to the semi-finals.
37:49Leaving the Smiths and the Burns to fight it out in the dreaded eliminator for this week's
37:54last place in the semi-finals.
37:56You're nerdy, dear.
37:57Come on.
37:58Get up.
37:59Get up.
38:00Get up.
38:01Up.
38:02Get up.
38:03Get up.
38:04Get up.
38:05Up.
38:06Get up.
38:07Get up.
38:08Get up.
38:12Get up.
38:14Welcome back to Ireland's Fittest Family.
38:20It's time for our first eliminator of the quarterfinals
38:23where Davy Smith family are going to be taking on Michael Dara's Burns.
38:27One family is going to edge closer to glory
38:30and the other will be stuck in the mud and out of the competition.
38:34So while Michael Dara and Davy have their two families still in the competition,
38:39that's going to change very soon once Paul the Ref starts this eliminator.
38:44Tonight's eliminator is no walk in the park.
38:47It begins with a sprint to collect a 30 kilogram log
38:51which they must run with together around the field.
38:54Then they face a relentless series of A-frames and walls.
38:57If that isn't enough, they have to navigate a tricky balance beam
39:01before the 3 meter walls await.
39:03These are followed by a plunge into a freezing ice bath.
39:07Next, it's a climb up onto a platform and down a cargo net covered ladder.
39:11Finally, the ramp awaits.
39:13The first family to the top of the ramp wins a place in next week's semi-final.
39:17The losing family is eliminated.
39:22Knowing that we've already completed an eliminator
39:25is definitely going to give us some sort of confidence boost
39:27and hopefully push us through to win it.
39:29Stand up, stand tall, set.
39:32Down for five, four, three, three, four.
39:34As usual, I'm nervous going into the eliminator.
39:38But when I start, I'll just go.
39:43Look, it is long.
39:45Especially Anne's had a bit of a knock.
39:46I think we saw that earlier.
39:47But I think just stick with it until the very end.
39:50I think we should be in the mix here.
39:51Let's go, let's go, a small bit more.
39:54I'm not going to be negative about it.
39:56I'm going to be positive.
39:57We'll get through this.
39:59We'll do it.
39:59We'll smash it.
40:00Right there, right there, right there, right there.
40:02And stop this stretch.
40:04I think it might come down to Mammy versus Mammy, yeah.
40:06But I think it's going to be a battle probably right
40:10until the very end of the ramp.
40:12Photo finish.
40:13Ready to go for the Smith family in purple
40:17are Mark, Cathy, Adam and Sean.
40:21And for the Burns in pink, it's Paul, Anne, John and Jack.
40:26Three, two, one.
40:30Loads of pressure on both families here
40:32as they begin the eliminator.
40:35That log weighs 30 kilograms
40:36and the Smiths have a bit of a lead already.
40:39Just wonder how Anne Byrne is feeling.
40:41She still has that strapping on her left knee.
40:45So the Smiths opening up a lead for Davy Fitz.
40:52Davy down there waiting for them at that drop zone
40:55where they can get rid of the log.
40:59Here they go at the walls.
41:00These are the easy ones in inverted commas.
41:06And an A-frame.
41:07Here come the Byrne family from Dublin.
41:11The Smith family from Laud.
41:12It's an all-Leinster clash
41:13for a place in the semi-final of Ireland's fittest family.
41:19So it's still early on in this race.
41:21There'll be no panic from the Byrne family.
41:26So a reminder there in pink.
41:28And in purple, it's the Smith family.
41:30We saw Cathy, Mum Cathy, going over that A-frame.
41:36The balance beams are always a very testing part of these challenges.
41:43The Smith family have now two on there.
41:45You've been going at 100 miles an hour
41:47and you have to calm everything down.
41:49And every step counts.
41:51Here come the Byrne family.
41:52They're not that far behind.
41:53One, two, one, two.
41:56So Davey just counting that out with Cathy.
41:58And Cathy's come off the beams just to go back to the start.
42:01So Paul taking great care with his mum, Anne.
42:04What a hero she's been today.
42:06So the Smith family have two away from the balance beams
42:09and they're up to this wall.
42:11I'm with you.
42:12I'm with you.
42:13Three metres high.
42:14They're actually not that far ahead, Anne.
42:15And we heard one of the Byrne family say
42:18that the Smith family are not that far ahead
42:20and they're not really.
42:22So Anne seemed to jar her knee there a little bit.
42:25That would be a concern for her.
42:27Hold my head, hold my head.
42:28Hold my head, hold my head.
42:29So, well, the Smith family not doing great at that wall.
42:33The really high one.
42:34Here come the Byrne family.
42:37Michael Darrell will keep them all together
42:39and keep them very much in the zone
42:41because Cathy is losing time.
42:42Cathy Smith is in trouble at that balance beam.
42:45And here come the Byrne family.
42:47All four of them there now.
42:51Wow, this is something else
42:52and they weren't that far ahead, were they?
42:54And the Byrnes have caught right up.
42:56Remember, Michael Darrell did work on balance
42:58earlier on in the competition
42:59while Anne has gone off there
43:00and she seemed to land heavily on that left leg
43:02which jarred her knee again.
43:04Just keep walking.
43:05So she's gone back down to the start.
43:08Cathy Smith is very nearly there
43:09and she's got away now.
43:10So she's away from the balance beam
43:12and the Smiths are trying to open up a lead again.
43:16Oh, there's a fall by Cathy.
43:18She's okay.
43:20This is all a bit chaotic now.
43:22Anne is in trouble.
43:23Anne Byrne.
43:24Stand up!
43:25Get your belly up!
43:26But we know, we saw it in the bog earlier on,
43:28she would keep going
43:29until she can't move anymore.
43:31So Cathy's trying to move up to the top
43:33of that three meters high wall.
43:38And Cathy has done that
43:39and down she goes on the other side.
43:42So the Byrne family,
43:43well, there's Paul coming to help.
43:46So they've won at the top of the wall
43:48and here is Cathy Smith at this ice bath.
43:51It's not everybody's cup of tea.
43:54It's very, very cold.
43:56Some people just don't like the water
43:58but look at this.
44:00It's kind of messy from both families
44:01but the Byrne's about to overtake
44:06the Smith family.
44:07Cathy is at this water.
44:09She goes down underneath the water.
44:11No, she's come back up again.
44:12Okay.
44:13That's okay.
44:17The Smith family on the right in purple
44:19with Davey Fitz there,
44:20they're losing time at this wall.
44:22They had a big lead earlier on.
44:24We heard the Byrnes talking to each other
44:26saying, look, they're not that far ahead
44:27and they've caught right up.
44:30Now, the Smith family have got away from the wall
44:33so they have the lead again
44:34and Cathy well done.
44:35She's got underneath the water
44:36and under those tires
44:37and out the other side.
44:40So what way is this going to finish?
44:46The tension builds.
44:47The pressure grows.
44:50So much at stake
44:51and the Byrne family
44:52they're away from that wall
44:55and here they are at the ice bath.
44:58The Smith family still lead.
45:00So they're up at that platform
45:01and now they have to go down that ladder
45:03with the cargo net.
45:04So the Byrne family,
45:05they're all together
45:06and they're very nearly away
45:08from the ice bath
45:09and indeed now they are.
45:12So the Smith family getting a look at the ramp.
45:16This is Mark Smith first to take it on.
45:18That's a brilliant leap from Mark Smith.
45:20Now, here come the Byrne family.
45:22They're at the platform.
45:25Another successful attempt
45:26from the Smiths.
45:28So they've got two out of four up there.
45:30That's superb.
45:31But the Byrnes are closing.
45:32Michael Dara Macaulay with them all the way.
45:34And Jack Byrne is at the ramp
45:36and he's had a go at that
45:37but he's come straight back down.
45:40Kathy Smith failing as well.
45:42She's going to have another go.
45:44The Smiths family have led right
45:45from the start of this eliminator
45:46but the Byrnes just keep at their heels.
45:49They won't give up.
45:50John Byrne on the right.
45:51He's got up there.
45:52So they've got one out of the four
45:53up at the top of the ramp.
45:55Jack for the Byrne family
45:57has taken his runners off
45:58and well that didn't work either.
46:00He's come straight back down.
46:02So Kathy Smith on the left there.
46:04Kathy.
46:04She would be the third up there.
46:06And Jack has got up
46:07for the Byrne family.
46:08Has he?
46:08Another try to drag him up there.
46:10That's John up there with him.
46:13This is really hard to watch.
46:15Everybody is absolutely exhausted
46:17and soaked to the skin.
46:19And Jack has got up there.
46:20So it's two for the Byrne family.
46:21Two for the Smith family.
46:22Can it be three now
46:23for the Smith family?
46:24No.
46:25Kathy's come back down again.
46:28Another fail from the Byrne family.
46:31Just trying to get any kind of grip
46:33on that ramp.
46:34It's soaking.
46:35Here we go.
46:36Three for the Byrne family.
46:37Is it very nearly?
46:38It very nearly is.
46:40Oh my word.
46:41What a battle.
46:42They've got three up there.
46:43It's just about getting Anne Byrne up.
46:44Anne just trying to calm down.
46:46Steady down.
46:46There's three up for the Smiths now as well.
46:48This is incredible.
46:49It's going to be a photo finish.
46:51Kathy Smith.
46:52Can she get to the top?
46:53Anne has come back down
46:53with the Byrne family.
46:54And Kathy's gone as well.
46:56It's all down to the two mothers here.
46:59Can the rest of their family
47:00drag either of them to the top
47:02to win a place in the semi-final?
47:04JB telling Kathy Smith
47:05just to calm down.
47:06Here she goes.
47:06Kathy Smith.
47:07And Kathy, they've got her.
47:08Have they known?
47:09She's slipped again.
47:10They're holding on to the front of her shirt
47:12trying to get her up.
47:12Anne Byrne tries again
47:13and she's just exhausted.
47:14She can't get up there.
47:15Kathy Smith is pulled to the top
47:17and the Smith family are true.
47:19They've won the Eliminator.
47:21They are into the semi-finals.
47:23Anne gave absolutely everything
47:25that she could.
47:26Like every last draft that she had.
47:28I'm very proud of my mother
47:29for getting this far anyway.
47:32Anne is an absolute legend.
47:33Look, I think everyone's falling in love with Anne.
47:35She'll be a hero in Castle Lock
47:37whenever this gets out.
47:38You owe me big time.
47:40I know.
47:41How much?
47:41No.
47:43It's a weekend.
47:44A weekend there.
47:45Weekend there.
47:45Weekend there.
47:46We can arrange that.
47:46Yeah.
47:48Something where I don't have to move.
47:51I can't believe her in the semi-finals now.
47:53It feels good to be there.
47:55Just keep working there
47:56and putting the head down
47:56for the next two weeks
47:57and go again.
47:58I'm so proud of them.
48:00They never stopped encouraging me
48:01the whole way around.
48:03I'm so proud of them.
48:05I give them a tough time
48:06and I drive them hard.
48:08But we learnt a lot today.
48:10I think we needed to take
48:11a lot of learnings from today
48:12and we did.
48:13I have to say
48:14to yourself and Anne
48:15you're putting all the mammies
48:16in the country under pressure
48:17because you have just put in
48:19such a performance.
48:20Your resilience is unbelievable
48:21and I think at the end of the day
48:23like lads
48:24you have to be so proud
48:25of your mum are you?
48:26Yeah absolutely.
48:27We're going to go home
48:28and get a takeaway.

48:29a few tips or something
