05:30Ruth, Overcoming Bad Decisions
05:32Tonight I want to tell you the story
05:37Of a woman whose name was Ruth
05:39The story begins in the first chapter of Ruth
05:42And here, as we look at this
05:45We have to realize that the book starts on a negative note
05:49You see, men and women, these were brutal times
05:51The story of Ruth takes place in the days of the judges
05:55And when you read the book of Judges
05:58You encounter a lot of backsliding
06:00And a lot of brutality
06:01As you read through the book of Judges
06:03It's easy to see a cynical pattern
06:05The people would backslide and become corrupt
06:09God would punish them with famine or conflict
06:12Or with their enemies
06:13And the people would repent and turn back to God
06:16Over and over
06:18The Lord raised up leaders to come in
06:20And try to lead his people back to himself
06:23Some of these leaders are famous people
06:25That you and I know
06:26People like Gideon and Deborah and Samson
06:29And these judges would lead them to some victory or another
06:33But when the people began backsliding again
06:35Here we go
06:36Back to the issues of the stories of the Bible
06:40That tell us what happens when we walk away from God
06:43And these breakdowns
06:45And this time of total disregard
06:47For the rule of God in their lives
06:49That's the time when the book of Ruth
06:51Was taking place
06:53What should we do when we recognize
06:57That our sins have gotten us in a bad place
06:59Well don't use the book of Ruth as an illustration
07:02Because what happened to them
07:05Should never happen to us
07:07There's no indication that Elimelech or Naomi
07:10Or their boys did the right thing
07:12Instead they made a series of really bad decisions
07:15They packed their bags
07:17And they went down to Moab
07:19Which was about 50 miles away
07:21Just like the prodigal son did when he left home
07:24And went into the far country
07:25The text doesn't tell us
07:28They looked to God or prayed or trusted
07:31They just decided on their own
07:33To flee to Moab
07:34Leaning on their own understanding
07:37The Israelites were to have nothing to do
07:39With the Moabites
07:40And they knew it
07:41But they went there anyway
07:42Let me say to you tonight
07:44Men and women
07:45You cannot end up where you want to be
07:47By making decisions
07:49God does not want you to make
07:51Wrong decisions don't lead to good outcomes
07:54Wrong decisions take us further away
07:58From God's plan
07:59Story didn't turn out very well
08:01Ruth 1, 3 and 4 says
08:03Then Elimelech, Naomi's husband, died
08:06They've gone to the foreign country of Moab
08:10And now Naomi's husband dies
08:13And her two sons
08:15And she were left alone
08:17And they took wives of the women of Moab
08:20The name of the one was Orpha
08:22And the name of the other was Ruth
08:25They went out of God's will
08:27And now they're married to two women
08:30Who are not Jewish
08:31They are totally outside of the will of God
08:34Everyone in this family made bad decisions
08:38Elimelech and Naomi decided to leave the land of God
08:41And go to the Moabites
08:43And their two sons married women
08:45Outside of the covenant of God
08:46So now we've got all these bad decisions
08:48Ganging up at once
08:50Now here comes some of the bitter outcomes
08:53We have one bad decision after another
08:55And look how it turns out
08:57As you read verses 4 and 5
08:58It says this
09:00Not only did Elimelech die
09:02The Bible says
09:03After they got into Moab
09:05And got married
09:05The two boys died
09:07And now this woman has survived her two sons
09:12And she survived her husband
09:13And she's all alone
09:15Naomi had taken a wrong turn
09:17And now all she had were three tombstones
09:20In the sands of Moab
09:21Brutal times and bad decisions
09:24Often go together
09:26That's a principle of life
09:28You simply can't escape
09:29And for Naomi
09:31It led to emptiness and ruin
09:33In verse 6 of chapter 1
09:35I'm glad to tell you
09:36The story doesn't end
09:37Where we are right now
09:38That's the beginning of the story
09:40This is the story of repentance
09:42Ruth 1 6 says
09:43And she arose with her daughters-in-law
09:45That she might return
09:47From the country of Moab
09:48A good point
09:49For she had heard
09:51In the country of Moab
09:52That the Lord had visited his people
09:54By giving them bread
09:56These were some first steps
09:57Back in the right direction
09:58Maybe you've walked away from the Lord
10:00And you think there's no way back
10:02There's always a way back
10:03And there are always first steps
10:05On the way back
10:06There in Moab
10:07Naomi took those steps
10:09They're literal steps
10:10Toward getting herself back
10:11To where she needed to be
10:13And it was a process
10:14It took quite a while
10:15For her to overcome
10:16The bitterness
10:16Of her family's bad decisions
10:18The amazing thing is
10:20That her determination to return
10:22Had a huge effect
10:23On her daughters-in-law
10:24And especially on Ruth
10:27And that brings us
10:28To verses 16 and 17
10:29Entreat me not to leave you
10:31Or to turn back
10:32From following me after you
10:34For wherever you go
10:35I will go
10:36And wherever you lodge
10:37I will lodge
10:38Your people will be my people
10:40And your God my God
10:41And where you die
10:42I will die
10:43And there will I be buried
10:45The Lord do so to me
10:47And more also
10:48If anything but death
10:49Parts you and me
10:51This amounts to what we would call
10:54Ruth's conversion
10:56This is where Ruth got right with God
10:58This was her declaration of faith
11:01Naomi's desire to return
11:03Had an immediate impact
11:04Her own daughter-in-law
11:05Whenever you start
11:07Making good decisions
11:08It will always influence
11:10People around you
11:11Ruth and Naomi
11:12Are getting ready
11:14To do the right thing
11:16The decisions made
11:17By Naomi and Ruth
11:19Led to a revival
11:20That's the third aspect
11:22Of the book of Ruth
11:23It's the story of revival
11:25And it's not limited
11:26To Naomi and Ruth
11:27I believe the entire town
11:29Of Bethlehem
11:30Was in the process
11:31Of returning to God
11:33And experiencing revival
11:34The last verse of chapter 1 says
11:36So Naomi returned
11:38And Ruth the Moabitess
11:39Her daughter-in-law with her
11:40Who returned from the country of Moab
11:43Now they came to Bethlehem
11:45At the beginning of the harvest
11:46Revival brings harvest
11:49It is a fascinating thing
11:51To compare the first words
11:52Of this chapter
11:53And the last words
11:55Verse 1 says
11:56It came to pass
11:57In the days
11:58When the judges ruled
11:59And there was a famine
12:00In the land
12:01But now they're coming back
12:03And there's a feast
12:04And there's a harvest
12:05Ten years later
12:06This is what has happened
12:07They come back to Bethlehem
12:09At the beginning
12:10Of the barley harvest
12:11And the first chapter
12:12Of Ruth begins
12:13With a famine
12:14And it ends with a feast
12:15God knows how to restore
12:17The years that the locusts
12:19Have eaten
12:20And when you come back
12:21To God
12:21He wants to restore
12:22Your life back to you
12:24And that's what's happening
12:25Here in this story
12:26Revival brings harvest
12:28And revival brings happiness
12:30As we continue reading
12:32Through the book of Ruth
12:33We're struck by the joyful atmosphere
12:35That seemed to pervade
12:37The entire city of Bethlehem
12:39Listen to these words
12:40From Ruth chapter 2
12:41There was a relative
12:43Of Naomi's husband
12:44A man of great wealth
12:45Of the family of Elimelech
12:48His name was Boaz
12:49So Ruth the Moabitess
12:51Said to Naomi
12:52Please let me go
12:53To the field
12:53And glean heads of grain
12:55After him
12:55In whose sight
12:56I may find favor
12:57And she said to her
12:59Go my daughter
13:00And she left
13:01And went and gleaned
13:02In the field
13:03After the reapers
13:03And she happened
13:05To come to the part
13:06Of the field
13:06Belonging to Boaz
13:07Who was of the family
13:08Of Elimelech
13:09Now behold
13:10Boaz came from Bethlehem
13:12And said to the reapers
13:13The Lord be with you
13:15And they answered him
13:16The Lord bless you
13:18This is why I believe
13:20Bethlehem was in the midst
13:21Of a revival
13:22Notice how the people
13:23Greeted each other
13:24I mean the wealthy landowner
13:25Showed up to inspect
13:27The harvest
13:27And he didn't say
13:28Hello or how's it going
13:29How are we reaping today
13:30He said
13:32No the Lord be with you
13:33Very unusual
13:35For that particular culture
13:36And they responded with
13:37And the Lord bless you
13:39The kind of greeting
13:41Occurs throughout
13:41The entire book of Ruth
13:42I don't know
13:43Any book in the Bible
13:44Where people are invoking
13:46God's blessings
13:46On each other
13:47Like the four chapters
13:49Of the book of Ruth
13:50These people in Bethlehem
13:52Were continually
13:53Praying down blessings
13:54From God
13:55On each other
13:56And throughout
13:57The remainder of the book
13:58I think you'll see
13:59There is joy in Bethlehem
14:00And he can send
14:02A personal revival
14:03To any of us
14:04If we'll just come back
14:05On his terms
14:06There can be happiness
14:07In your life
14:08When you turn
14:09In your tracks
14:10And head back
14:11Toward God
14:12He knows how to send
14:14Refreshing into your heart
14:15And by the way
14:16What I just said
14:17Is the most
14:18Biblical definition
14:19Of repentance
14:20Do you know
14:21What repentance means?
14:22It means to do a 180
14:24You're going this way
14:26You're going away
14:27From God
14:28You're not honoring God
14:29And God intervenes
14:30In your life
14:31Maybe in a message
14:32Like the one tonight
14:32Or someone you heard
14:33At your church
14:34And the Holy Spirit
14:35Intersects with your life
14:37And immediately
14:37You know you're going
14:38The wrong direction
14:39And repentance means
14:40Stop dead in your tracks
14:42And go back
14:43Toward the right way
14:44That's what repentance means
14:45And that's what happened
14:47In Bethlehem
14:48And that's what happened
14:49When Ruth and Naomi
14:51Went back
14:53Revival also brings harmony
14:56The Jews and the Moabites
14:59Hated each other
15:00And the tension
15:01Between these two people
15:02Became an epic struggle
15:03In the Old Testament
15:04But notice how wonderfully
15:06Ruth the Moabitess
15:08Was accepted
15:09Boaz and his workers
15:10And the people of Bethlehem
15:12Opened their arms
15:12To this woman
15:13From another culture
15:15From another race
15:16From another nation
15:16And throughout this whole book
15:18Even when the people
15:19Had to deal with
15:20The challenging legal issue
15:21There's nothing but harmony
15:23They're getting along
15:25The Moabites
15:26And the Jews
15:26Are getting along
15:27Revival brings hope
15:30In our story
15:31The Moabitess
15:32Gleans in the field
15:33Of Boaz
15:34You know the story
15:35And he instructs
15:36His workers
15:36To leave a little extra
15:38For her
15:38And she returns home
15:39That night
15:40With a bushel of grain
15:41And Naomi is amazed
15:42And in verse 19
15:43She says
15:44Where have you gleaned today
15:46And where did you work
15:48Blessed be the one
15:49Who took notice of you
15:50Like she didn't know
15:51So she told her mother-in-law
15:53With whom she had worked
15:54And said
15:54The man's name
15:55With whom I have worked
15:56Today is Boaz
15:57And Naomi said
15:58To her daughter-in-law
15:59Blessed be he
16:00Of the Lord
16:01Who has not forsaken
16:02His kindness
16:03To the living
16:04And the dead
16:04These are the first
16:06Positive words
16:07Naomi speaks
16:08In the whole book
16:09Of Ruth
16:10Did you know that?
16:11It's really interesting
16:11She has been bitter
16:13And oppressed
16:13In her spirit
16:14But now suddenly
16:15She cries out
16:16Blessed be the Lord
16:17Naomi has even herself
16:19Partaken in the revival
16:21When you come back
16:22To the Lord
16:23He takes over
16:24He directs your steps
16:25You can get your footsteps
16:26Going in the right way
16:27In the right harvest fields
16:29And God knows
16:30How to put hope
16:31Back in your heart
16:31Maybe you're here tonight
16:32And you've kind of lost hope
16:33Turn toward the Lord
16:35And get back to him
16:36As fast as you can
16:37He will revive your soul
16:39He will bring you
16:40A harvest of righteousness
16:41A sense of joy
16:42And happiness
16:43He will bring harmony
16:44Back into your relationships
16:45And hope in your heart
16:47And you'll begin to realize
16:49There is a God
16:50And it's the God I serve
16:52And his son Jesus Christ
16:53Is in my heart
16:54Now we come to a little bit
16:56Of a parenthesis in this story
16:58And I'm going to cover this quickly
16:59But it's too good to leave out
17:01And it's part of the book
17:02So this is a story of romance
17:04Then Naomi
17:06Her mother-in-law
17:07Said to her
17:08My daughter
17:08Shall I not seek security for you
17:11That it may be well with you
17:12In other words
17:12Can I get on your team
17:13And help you get this right
17:14And she came up with a plan
17:17In other words
17:18Naomi had a plan
17:19For getting her daughter established
17:20And she was asking for permission
17:22To implement the plan
17:24Will you let me help you
17:25Naomi said in effect
17:27Do you want me to help you
17:28Find a husband
17:29I have somebody in mind
17:30Ruth must have nodded
17:32Yes
17:33Because Naomi went right on
17:34In verses 2 through 4
17:35To explain her plan
17:36Here's the plan
17:38Now Boaz
17:39Whose young women
17:40You were with
17:41Is he not our relative
17:42In fact
17:43He is winnowing barley tonight
17:45At the threshing floor
17:46Therefore wash yourself
17:48And anoint yourself
17:49Put on your best garment
17:51And go down to the threshing floor
17:52But do not make yourself
17:54Known to the man
17:55Until he has finished
17:56Eating and drinking
17:56Then it shall be
17:58When he lies down
17:59That you shall notice
18:00The place where he lies
18:01And you shall go in
18:02Uncover his feet
18:04And lie down
18:04And he will tell you
18:06What you should do
18:07Now that
18:08That needs explaining
18:11That needs explaining

18:15Is that in the Bible?
18:16And Ruth said
18:20Verse 5
18:22All that you say to me

18:31This is a strange custom

18:33As it was to Ruth
18:34Who being from Moab
18:35Didn't know what
18:36The Jewish culture
18:37Was all about
18:38So her mother-in-law
18:39Told her to step
18:40By step
18:41What to do
18:42In keeping with
18:43Jewish cultural patterns
18:44She was to go down
18:45And present herself
18:46Humbly at the feet
18:47Of Boaz
18:47Letting him know
18:49Of her need
18:49And openness
18:50For his help
18:51What Naomi suggested
18:53Was not immoral
18:54It was simply
18:55A culturally accepted way
18:57In those days
18:58Of Ruth
18:59Letting Boaz know
19:00She needed him
19:02To redeem her
19:03That she wanted
19:04To marry him
19:05From the very beginning
19:07Of chapter 2
19:08We've sensed
19:08The love developing
19:09Between these two
19:10And now Ruth
19:11Is going to express
19:12Her need
19:13For Boaz's love
19:15And this turns out
19:17To be a proposal
19:18In the Old Testament way
19:19She does exactly
19:21What her mother-in-law
19:22Tells her to do
19:22Verses 6-9
19:23Continues the story
19:24So she went down
19:25To the threshing floor
19:26And did according
19:27To all that her mother-in-law
19:28Instructed her
19:29And after Boaz
19:30Had eaten and drunk
19:31And his heart was cheerful
19:32And he went to lie down
19:33At the end of the heap of grain
19:34She came softly
19:35Uncovered his feet
19:36And lay down
19:37Now it happened
19:39At midnight
19:39That the man was startled
19:40And turned himself
19:42And there is a woman
19:43Lying at his feet
19:44And he said
19:46Who are you?
19:49And she answered
19:50I am Ruth
19:51Your maidservant
19:51Take your maidservant
19:53Under your wing

20:32And that is the story
20:34Of redemption
20:34Ruth is a story
20:36Of ruin
20:37Of repentance
20:37Of revival
20:38And romance
20:39But above all
20:40Ruth is a story
20:41Of redemption
20:42I'm sure you've noticed
20:43The phrase
20:44Close relative
20:45Take your maidservant
20:47Under your wing
20:47For you are a close relative
20:49The law of the redeemer
20:51Was this
20:52In the Mosaic law
20:53God made some
20:54Special provisions
20:55For widows
20:56Whose husbands died
20:58Without leaving them
20:59Children
21:00Or whose properties
21:01And wealth were lost
21:03A near relative
21:04Could redeem the situation
21:06He could step in
21:08And make sure
21:08The relative
21:09Was redeemed
21:10From slavery
21:11Or her property
21:12Was restored
21:13And in a similar way
21:14Provide a way
21:16For a man
21:16To marry the wife
21:18Of his deceased relative
21:19To carry on
21:20The family name
21:21And the chain of inheritance
21:22In other words
21:23If you were a close relative
21:24You could come in
21:25Let's take Boaz
21:27In this situation
21:27And you could come in
21:28And you could redeem
21:30That person
21:31Because they had lost
21:32Their father
21:33They had lost
21:34Their husband
21:34And so this entire process
21:38Is complicated to explain
21:40But in simple terms
21:41A kinsman redeemer
21:42Could restore
21:43What was lost
21:44That's really the theme
21:45Of the book of Ruth
21:46Biblical experts tell us
21:48That the word redeem
21:49Occurs over 20 times
21:51In this little
21:51Four chapter book
21:52Now this all
21:54Is really so exciting
21:56And it's a wonderful
21:57Short story
21:57And I'm sure
21:58I could have told it better
21:59I've been in a hurry
22:00Because I wanted
22:01To get it all in
22:02But let me tell you
22:02Where this all ends up
22:03Because this is
22:05The most precious part
22:06Of the whole thing
22:06Verse 13 of the fourth chapter
22:10Says
22:10Boaz took Ruth
22:12And she became his wife
22:14And he went into her
22:16And the Lord gave her conception
22:17And she bore a son
22:19Then the woman said to Naomi
22:22Blessed be the Lord
22:23Who has not left you this day
22:25Without a close relative
22:26And may his name be famous
22:28In Israel
22:29And may he be to you
22:30A restorer of life
22:31And a nourisher
22:32Of your old age
22:33For your daughter-in-law
22:35Who loves you
22:36Who is better you
22:37Than seven sons
22:38Has born him
22:39Now here's the important
22:40Postscript to this story

22:46He is the father

24:06Hope
24:07And future
24:08And my question
24:10To you tonight
24:11Is this
24:11Have you been redeemed?
24:13God has done
24:14All the work
24:15Christ has paid
24:16All the penalty
24:17But he's not going
24:19To force his redemption
24:20Upon you
24:21He asks you to come
24:22And receive
24:23What he has done
24:24Let me tell you
24:24What that means
24:25That means
24:26If you're not a Christian
24:27If you have never
24:28Accepted Christ
