Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver states how it was like watching film this past week... Leroy grows very upset with his response and does research to back up his rebuttal.
Transcript
00:00The Dolphins are getting ready for the Chargers, and Anthony Weaver, he took us into his mind watching that debacle that was Sunday against the Panthers.
00:15Let's hear from Anthony Weaver on what it was like watching film.
00:20I give myself 24 hours, right?
00:21There's 24 hours where certainly there can be a little anger and rage, but then you've got to shake it off and you've got to get back to, all right,
00:27how do we attack these problems?
00:31As it pertains to our run defense, the unfortunate part of it, I think they gained about 140 of those 200 yards on four runs, right?
00:39So if you have 30 runs and four of them go for 140 and the other 26 go for 60, everything you're doing is not wrong.
00:48Now, as it pertains to those four runs, particularly in our early first half.
00:52Stop the tape.
00:52Stop the tape.
00:53Stop the tape.
00:57That's one ball.
01:09Nobody has 100 yards on 20 carries for five yards.
01:13You have one carry for 30 yards.
01:16Nobody gets to throw those 30 yards away.
01:21Let's look at it the other way.
01:23You have four carries for 140 yards.
01:32Four.
01:34Four carries.
01:3626 of them were good.
01:41Wait.
01:42Wait, wait, wait.
01:43So, listen, we start every game when Baltimore Ravens are playing.
01:52And every team, they may stop, you know, Derrick Henry, 10 carries, 13 yards, right?
02:04Then the second quarter, the third quarter, and the fourth quarter.
02:09And then they throw this stat up.
02:11His last five carries have gone for 120 yards.
02:15Well, let's hear him out.
02:22Let's hear him out.
02:23Let's hear him out.
02:25You know, maybe you did that to every.
02:28Maybe the back of the answer.
02:29You only gave up that one bad play.
02:31I only had that one bad pick.
02:34We only had that one bad sack.
02:36That poor pitcher for the Phillies last night only had one bad play.
02:39Like, what are we doing?
02:43Let's hear him out.
02:43Four carries, 400.
02:45That's crazy.
02:46Here's, let's hear again.
02:48He said that loud in public.
02:50He did.
02:50A lot of that was like second level misfits.
02:53And then guys trying to make plays on the ball before we stopped the ball.
02:58That's probably the bigger issue.
02:59Some of those big runs that went 50 for 40 for 20.
03:02They should go for eight, for nine, for 10.
03:06And then you're sitting here and we probably have a W at the end of the day.
03:09So, we're always evaluating our systems and our processes and who's on the field doing what.
03:16I think there's a lot of things we're doing right.
03:19Certainly our run defense is disappointing.
03:21We're not defeated by any means.
03:24Because we've seen, you could show one play go for minus one, and they can run the exact same play go for 25 against the exact same defense.
03:34Now, that's not a scheme problem.
03:38That's a trust fit tackling problem, which is what we need to, that's what we need to get fixed.
03:44Let me, let me, okay, all right, let me, what is the primary goal of the defense?
04:03When you break it down to the simplest of fundamentals, tackle the guy with the football.
04:09The basic fundamental, how you get there, how you get in position, or whatever.
04:17But the basic fundamental of that side of the football is tackle the guy with the football.
04:25Correct?
04:27Okay.
04:27Can I ask a question, dude?
04:29Does anybody in that organization just think to themselves, you know what would get this answer through?
04:35We just haven't been good enough.
04:37Right!
04:37That's my point.
04:38Here, here, you know what, like, I used to say this to you.
04:45Now what?
04:47Meaning that you know what the play is, I have the football, you have to tackle me.
04:52Now what?
04:53Okay?
04:55Like, that's what it boils down to.
04:57But, like, are all of these press conferences with Weaver and Tua and McDaniel, are all of the reporters hypnotists?
05:04Why are you guys still talking?
05:06Every answer is a soliloquy.
05:09It's got 40 seconds of too much juice.
05:12I would say this.
05:13And I'm making fun right now, but I promise you, that's not what's being said in those meetings.
05:25I promise you, right?
05:29Coaches just don't want to rip their players.
05:33I understand.
05:34I understand.
05:35So, but, but, but, but, but, but.
05:39It was only four runs.
05:40Please don't throw me, you know, like, that's the coach when they end up 6-11 going, we were within one score in eight of the games in the fourth quarter.
05:51It's not even like, but you couldn't even do that.
05:53It wasn't even like one.
05:54He goes, it was just four super explosive plays, guys.
05:59Can I say this?
06:00Think about, I want you to.
06:03Just bear with me here because I'm going to give you a fact that I don't know to be a fact, but I can pretty much guarantee it.
06:15It's a fact.
06:16If you give up more than two plays in the run game that go for over 25-plus yards, you'll probably lose it.
06:30Because usually that happens once or twice a game, right?
06:39The fact that he got on a camera and admitted that it happened four times.
06:47Go look.
06:48Just pull up the next break.
06:51Go to last week and pull up a random game and look at both teams and look at how many carries went for 25 yards or more.
07:04And then I want you to think of what he said and think of why I'm, like, in shock.
07:13Yep.
07:14Here was a little more of him.
07:15He said that he threw up watching the tape.
07:17One of our points and emphasis going into the game was to take the extra step, meaning make sure you got bone on bone, pad on pad, and got these guys to the ground.
07:26So, in that game, I think the biggest thing that happened to us is we were so ball conscious and trying to take it away and just never stop the actual ball carry.
07:38And this guy was running.
07:39He was like a runaway freight train, just running downhill.
07:42So, that was disappointing.
07:44Again, we have an incredibly prideful group.
07:47So, there are times in that game when you're watching the tape and you want to throw up, particularly because it's some of the guys that were making some of the errors.
07:56It was just unlike them.
08:01So, the beauty is we have an opportunity to correct it.
08:05We have no time to hang our heads and walk around like we're at a wake.
08:08And I thought the guys yesterday at practice did just that.
08:12They attacked their daily routine and what they were trying to do and just went out there and attacked the field and tried to get better.
08:20So, hopefully we see the results of that this week.
08:24If I may, please don't come to me on Monday and say we only gave up two plays of 25 yards or more.
08:37Okay?
08:37Hey, that's a win.
08:38I'm just telling you.
08:39I'm just telling you.
08:41Listen.
08:42And this is from having no numbers in front of me.
08:46No numbers.
08:48Pick random games which you think teams have good run games, decent run games, or whatever.
08:55And look at how many rushes went for 25 yards or more.
08:59I'll look at last night.
09:00I'll see what we had last night.
09:01I'll take a look at that game.
09:04What a night.
09:05Scadaboo's longest play was what?
09:0715 yards?
09:09Yeah.
09:10On the pitch, maybe?
09:12Yeah.
09:13Like, are you...
09:15You're flustered.
09:19That's like saying to your wife, I only cheated twice last week.
09:24Right?
09:25That's pretty good.
09:27Longest rush last night for Saquon was 18 yards.
09:31Yeah.
09:32Longest rushes yesterday for Scadaboo was 18.
09:36Jackson Dart had a 20-yarder.
09:3720 and 18.
09:39And their coach is probably saying, we gave up those two big plays.
09:44Four?
09:46Dude, look.
09:47Pick another game.
09:48Dude.
09:49This is just rando off the top of my head telling you football stuff.
09:54That makes no damn sense!
09:56That makes no damn sense!
