00:00Huge, huge win. Biggest win for me since Super Bowl 53. I am officially hopping on the bandwagon both feet. I love the Vrabel hire. I thought it was going to be the right decision going forward, but I am shocked at how quickly they got there. Three and two heading into this weekend. Three and a half point favorites at New Orleans. Courtney's concerned that they may be in a trap week.
00:23I think it just is a trap week. That's just the basic definition of what a trap week is. You're coming off Sunday night football against the Bills who everybody has going to the Super Bowl this year. Nobody expected you to win. You come out of that one with a W, and now you're going into a week with a Saints team that a lot of people don't have confidence in.
00:44Pop Douglas gave a great answer when I asked about the defense, but even he's saying their record doesn't reflect how good they are. That's the setup that you never want to see for your team. If they go in there and have a sloppy, bad game, everything that they've built so far gets thrown out the window when it comes to the way in which people view this team.
01:06That win against Buffalo, it will just be a flash in the pan, and then we're going to move on with the season. I don't want to see that happen. I hope it doesn't happen. It's just something that I think should be noted as we go into this week.
01:17I also think it's just a benefit for the Patriots that the Saints won last week. They're not coming off a loss. They're coming off their sole win of the year, and so them coming off that high I think is also beneficial for the Patriots.
01:29And the fact that Vrabel, he understands exactly what Courtney's talking about. That's why his message, it seems like he's been pushing to all these guys, is like, this week is bigger than last week.
01:41Like, don't get caught into the trap. Don't go read the press clippings. We're not as good as you think. Like, you know, bringing them back down to earth so where they know, like, all right, we got to go out there, and we got to be laser focused, and we got to go out there and play football against the team.
01:58Yeah, their record might not reflect the team that they are, but if we don't bring it, they can beat us. And it seems like Vrabel is really pushing that message, and that, to me, that's what gives me the confidence, because when you start to hear all these players talk about, oh, how big this game is and how more important it is than last week, that lets me know that Vrabel's getting that message. He's beating it into their brain.
02:22I will say I don't know what will happen Sunday. None of us do. This is consecutive weeks of the locker room echoing the sentiment of the coach in a way that is reminding me of the old days with Bill, where you have β and what gives me confidence in Sunday is that the week preceding the Bills game, they had the Panthers, who had just shut out the Falcons in the week before, and they just β I mean, demolished them.
02:47It was a beatdown unlike we have seen around here in a really long time, and I feel like we have the cross-insurance player spotlight.
02:55Shyam, can I have a question for the β just an editor question, editorial question?
03:01Can I do a coach? It does say a player. He was a player and a coach.
03:06Sure, I'll allow it.
03:08And I'll do Mike Vrabel and Drake May. How does that sound? Both of them.
03:10But really, this week is going to be β what we see Sunday, at the end of the first half, at 2.30 on Sunday afternoon, I think we will know what this team's identity is or not.
03:23If they get to this β you know, the Caesars Superdome, and they have a listless start, and they're trailing her down by a field goal at the half, it kind of shows that they were reading their own press clippings.
03:34Whereas if they get out there and they make this β you know, not a runaway, the NFL's not going to be that, but if they win comfortably, I feel like it's another way to solidify that Mike Vrabel has the control of this team.
03:46And I really β I know that it's a huge overreaction, but I don't know what we're supposed to do.
03:51Like, they're 3-2. They have four winnable games ahead of them.
03:55If they win 3-4, you're 6-3.
03:59Like, I don't know why we shouldn't have expectations that they'd be 6-3 now.
04:03Well, and the other reason why I think, like, why our expectations shouldn't be high, what people are like, oh, pump the brakes, pump the brakes, is, you know, we talked about this.
04:13You watched last night's game.
04:16Where is the really, really, really good football team?
04:22They beat them. That was the best team of Sunday.
04:24But that's what I'm saying. There no longer is that team no more where you go β
04:28If the Ravens are fully healthy, maybe.
04:30Right, but they're not fully healthy.
04:31Like, Kansas City, does Kansas City look like that team?
04:35Nope.
04:36Right?
04:36Does β we β clearly, the Eagles don't.
04:39They don't look like that team.
04:40You think that their next big test is the Bucs.
04:42Yeah, and, like, even the Bucs, right?
04:44They're a good football team, but β
04:46But are you terrified of them?
04:47Yeah, they almost blew a β or didn't they blow a 20-something point lead to the Eagles at one point?
04:53Like, so, there's no team that I look at in the NFL right now and I go, man, that team got everything.
05:02You don't want to play them.
05:03And that's why I think if you are the Patriots, if you are any team that is, like, in a position right now where you have a decent record,
05:10like, this thing is wide open because there's no dominant football team.
05:14None.
05:15And the Cross Insurance Player Spotlight is, this week, Mike Vrabel and Drake May for me.
05:20And that is brought to you by Cross Insurance, official insurance broker of the New England Patriots.
05:25I find entering this weekend, I have the first feeling of, like, okay, they should win.
05:32They better win.
05:33They're on their way to something important this year.
05:36Like, I don't β and it wasn't so much that they won in Buffalo because, as we remember, there was that weird win game.
05:43There had been crazy outcomes.
05:44They had the random Mac Jones fourth quarter comeback at home a couple years ago.
05:48It was that they entered the game saying, this is a statement game for us.
05:52This is a night where we can show the world what we've become.
05:55And it wasn't something where they had, you know, an onside kick, a Hail Mary, some crazy, you know, gadget play that led to the points.
06:05It was a game where they made mistakes, where Ramondre Stevenson fumbled again, where they were not at all perfect,
06:11but they beat a Bills team that was relatively healthy at their stadium.
06:16All of it is β they can replicate everything they did on Sunday.
06:19Yeah, you were the better team on Sunday.
06:21That was it.
06:21You outplayed them.
06:23You were the better team.
06:24You had the better quarterback.
06:25You had the better quarterback.
06:26It wasn't a game that people would go, okay, you watch that game.
06:31You know, all right, the Bills, they lost that one.
06:32They gave that game away.
06:34Good job by the Patriots capitalizing on the opportunity.
06:37But if they play again and the Bills, you know, don't do this, this, this, and this, the Bills will win.
06:46Whereas if you look at that game and you go, all right, next time they play, the Bills, I think, other than the turnovers, and granted, would they have two turnovers in that game?
06:58Or was it two or three?
07:01Might have ended up being three.
07:02I'll double check.
07:02Right, it was three.
07:03But I think two of them, the Patriots didn't capitalize on.
07:06Yeah.
07:06So it's like, all right, you had two turnovers and you didn't capitalize, and you still were able to beat this team.
07:13So if they play at home, I wouldn't.
07:15Yeah, there were two fumbles and an interception on the Bills' part.
07:17If everything goes according to plan, say they win their next four games, say they lose to Tampa Bay, but then they continue to win.
07:25And so the next time that they play the Bills, their record, I'd have to look at their schedule.
07:33Well, if it's after that, if they win the next four, that's seven wins.
07:36If they lose to the Bucks, that's three losses.
07:38So it's seven and three through ten weeks.
07:40Okay, so then you get the Jets, Bengals, Giants before you get the Bills.
07:44So at least 12 and four.
07:46So holy guacamole, we are.
07:48Play that into ten wins into a playoff berth.
07:50I think this team is able to do it.
07:52I hope this time around you have the opportunity where the offseason is not then spent denigrating the quarterback and creating a dumpster fire by hiring your drinking buddies as a staff,
08:02that Vrabel and his team can actually take it to the next level.
08:05But I think now, what changed after Sunday night, anything less than a playoff spot is a failure.
08:11Yeah, I mean, I had him at nine wins anyways, beginning of the season.
08:14I thought Vrabel was going to turn it around.
08:17But yeah.
08:17Shime's six is looking worse.
08:19Right.
08:19I'm with you.
08:20But thank you.
08:20When you look at, because the reason why I look at nine wins and making the playoffs is because of the rest of the AFC.
08:28Right?
08:29I might have said before the season, all right, they get to nine.
08:33Maybe nine doesn't get them in.
08:35They're going to need ten wins.
08:36I don't know if they can get ten wins because I thought Cincinnati.
08:39I thought Baltimore.
08:41You thought they were going to lose both the Bills games.
08:42I thought the Chargers.
08:44I thought the Bills.
08:44Like, I looked at teams and I'm like, oh, it's going to be tough this year.
08:48But now as we start to see how the season's playing out, all those teams that I had high expectations for,
08:55all are like either dealing with a bunch of injuries or don't look that dominant.
09:01Like the Chargers, dealing with some injuries, they don't look dominant.
09:04They're going in the wrong direction.
09:05Yeah, they're going in the wrong direction.
09:06It's like the teams that I thought.
09:08The Texans I thought would be better.
09:09They're not better.
09:10The teams that you thought were going to be good are not good.
09:13And the teams that you were like, you didn't think were going to be good.
09:15You're like, wait, Jacksonville and the Colts.
09:17And we haven't gotten to it specifically, but Drake May's performance was excellent.
09:22His progression this year has been better than anybody could have hoped.
09:26And that's the reason that you stand here.
09:29And it's not like, because even when the Patriots were winning in 21,
09:32it wasn't like Mac Jones was lighting the world on fire.
09:35He was fine.
09:36He wasn't causing you to lose.
09:38Right.
09:39But the highs we've seen from Drake May are already higher than anything we saw from Mac Jones.
09:44And I think what it shows you, which is interesting, is like, I think Bill's the greatest coach of all time.
09:52But I look at it and I go, imagine if Bill had Drake May with Josh McDaniels.
09:58Like, the progression of what we're seeing Drake May's Salem potentially could be, you go, wow.
10:05And not that Vrabel's not doing it.
10:07I'm just saying Bill would need that guy.
10:10Right?
10:10So we talk about Bill going someplace else.
10:13He's going to have to go someplace else where there's a good quarterback.
10:16Who can handle him, too.
10:17Yeah, who can handle him.
10:18And you see what that quarterback does.
10:21Like, Vrabel, I think, and I don't know.
10:22Bill's not going to get another coach.
10:24No, no, I'm not saying he is.
10:25But I think somebody said it yesterday.
10:28The progression of Drake May, at least from what we're seeing,
10:32looks like him and Vrabel could be here for the next 10, 12 years.
10:36That's right.
10:36And even Josh McDaniels' talk was asked yesterday about that.
10:39And he said, yeah, I mean, I like living in Westwood.
10:41Who doesn't?
10:42So hopefully he's around, too, despite what Shime thinks of him.
10:45Keith in the truck.
10:45What's up?
10:46Zach, not much.
10:48I just, I think going into that Bills game,
10:50I think that they're going to be, I think, 9-4 or 8-5 with four games left.
10:57I think they should be able to beat the Jets.
10:58I think they should be able to beat Miami.
11:00And then we'll see, I think, what is it, Buffalo-Baltimore?
11:03Is that what it is?
11:04It's Buffalo-Baltimore, the other two games.
11:07So I think 10 or 11 games.
11:0910 or 11 games.
11:10And, you know, it's a good, great, great first year with Vrabel.
11:16Yeah, I agree.
11:17I think the schedule has opened up.
11:19That win yesterday makes up for either the Raiders or the Steelers, whichever one of those.
11:24Because you weren't going to win both, I don't think.
11:25But you should have won one of them.
11:27So entering this season, it felt like they were taking their time and they didn't want to, quote-unquote, like, rush the rebuild.
11:34But with the way in which your quarterback is developing, the softness of your schedule,
11:39do you just, like, by proxy, have to kind of speed up your process in terms of that?
11:45Like, you have to be more urgent, right?
11:46The way that the year has unfolded to this point, where you're entering the middle of October,
11:52you have largely avoided the major injury, you have Christian Gonzalez back.
11:58I know he had a handy thing.
11:58Looks healthy as hell.
12:00And the defense is, you know, performing.
12:03And you have a guy like A.J. Brown out there, it would be, I think, a dereliction of duty for the organization
12:09not to sit here and say, this is exactly what we build for.
12:14We have this opportunity, we have the draft capital, we can't draft receivers worth a damn.
12:19Let's bring in A.J. Brown and really expedite where we are.
12:22Because it also creates the buy-in for Vrabel.
12:26Like, it's the anti-North Carolina thing, where now even guys that may not have been all in with the Vrabel approach,
12:32after last Sunday night, it's like, well, you kind of got to get in.
12:35You know, the bear hugs outside the locker room, I think, are hokey to some people.
12:38But it looks legit.
12:39Like, I don't, maybe I'm, you know, I'm...
12:41I think it looks legit.
12:42I think all these players like him, like playing for him, buy-in to whatever he's selling.
12:46Definitely.
12:47And the receivers are going to want to play for Drake May.
12:49Right.
12:49Because they know he's going to throw them the football.
12:51That's why I said these next four games are so critical.
12:57Because after that Atlanta Falcons game, Cheyenne, you said, I think it's maybe two days you'll have before the trade deadline.
13:03And if you can go 4-0 or 3-1, you'll end up either being 6-3 or 7-2.
13:11You have to be like, all right, we are really a good football team.
13:16We're sitting here at 6-3.
13:18We'll use that one.
13:19Because if you say the next four games, let's say they stumble one.
13:23You go, all right.
13:23We got Tampa Bay coming up.
13:27We have to do something because we now look at it like we should be able to beat the Jets.
13:32We should be able to beat Cincinnati.
13:34And you start to say, as an organization, why wouldn't we do something to better this team?
13:40Because we can make a legitimate run, especially if you go 4-0 over the next four games.
13:46I can't wait.
13:46Finally, a Patriots Friday where the Patriots have expectations to beat a lesser opponent.
