As Sydney’s new fish market nears completion officials are yet to reveal whether it'll be open by Christmas. On Thursday, state politicians including the premier got a first look at the contentious harbourside development which is expected to attract around six million visitors each year.

00:00In the form of a wave on Blackwattle Bay, Sydney's new fish market will be the largest

00:12This will become a tourism mecca for people around the world, people around Australia
00:16as well as Sydneysiders as they come to what will undoubtedly be the best fish markets
00:21in the world.
00:22Initially set to open last year, the project's been plagued by delays.
00:28We don't have a date to share with you today unfortunately, it is imminent, you know it's
00:34just too early to make that call.
00:36With an initial budget of $250 million, the final cost of the entire project now sets at
00:43around $830 million.
00:46But officials are confident they've reeled in the remaining costs.
00:51Transforming from the precinct that we have to the new has come with its challenges.
00:56We return to profitability this year and we're focused on reporting similar results for the
01:02coming year.
01:03The new market sits adjacent to the original site which will be redeveloped into more than
01:081,200 residential apartments.
01:11But it's unclear when exactly that development will be finalised and delivered.
01:15But there are also other lands owned by private landowners and there could be development happening
01:21on that land as well.
01:22The area will also include a new ferry terminal and extended walkway.
01:27Nothing worth doing is easy and if you look at the history of Sydney, some of our big iconic
01:31projects, they've all had difficulties and this is the latest example.
01:35Once complete, the market will double its number of retailers across four floors and operate
01:41until 10pm each night.
