00:00:00Oh
00:00:04Holy
00:00:06The P2 car and the Toyota involved in that car was briefly airborne. There's four cars involved there
00:00:14It's the
00:00:16Is that one of the Alpines the 36 car? Yeah, it looks like the 36. Yeah, and that's a 25 car. Here's the Toyota's view
00:00:26That's the ORT Aston in front
00:00:29That's a pannis car on the left
00:00:32What was that the 39?
00:00:35The church has taken a hit
00:00:37The Toyota took a left rear hit from the Ferrari. Where did the Ferrari come from?
00:00:41That is the Ferrari tried to come through the gap. It's the 35. It's the beginning of a slow zone guys
00:00:48They all got one out. They all got caught out seven in trouble
00:00:52Sixty-seven was the only one that saw it. He slowed seven in trouble
00:00:57LMP2 car
00:00:58Sixty-six in terminal trouble thirty-five awesome trouble. There's a JMW team look at the crowd that are still here at midnight
00:01:05That is a horrible way for a seven-year Le Mans career for the 66 Ferrari to finish
00:01:10Okay, well you have to try to start the engine try to start the engine
00:01:20There's power
00:01:22Now what we didn't see is it's green. That's good. Yeah is what hits him and where on the car?
00:01:31I think it's a 66 car
00:01:35Is it was the last to arrive on that? Yes, and he went tried to go between the 35 and the seven and 36 and seven
00:01:42I cannoned off both
00:01:44But the 35 came past Camus on the right, there was a P car on the left. I think it was the Panis car. I think it was 65 on the left
00:01:54I think 65 on the 35
00:02:00Oh man
00:02:04Okay, can we report the damage as well?
00:02:06We will switch to slow zone two and three so slow zone from turn three to turn ten
00:02:13On short notice the standby for the moment it's still focusing
00:02:19Okay
00:02:23That is Steve Hager the number one in the JMW motorsport team with Stefan Orteli
00:02:291998 winner also driver coach to Louis Brett
00:02:31Philomon I guess trying to figure out what was going on cards involved it says here a seven and sixty on the marshals screen
00:02:40It's not sixty six sixty is out and has been for some time the car is moving seven car is moving but very very slowly
00:02:48This is high drama multiple winning squad
00:02:51Uh-oh
00:02:52When you move thirty feet John Doonan and turn it on and off again as a road car driver you don't need to be Einstein to read those signs that's not a healthy car
00:03:03Yeah, it's unfortunate
00:03:06It's been a
00:03:09So we'll listen in to see what Kabuki Opiyashi is hearing or saying
00:03:12What happened? Can you tell us more?
00:03:15When I start the engine car is not long at all
00:03:19There's no chance to run
00:03:21Okay, driver default two six on first of all driver default two six on
00:03:27Strikes me that sounds like drive
00:03:29It's a drive shaft or a gearbox issue
00:03:31If he's taking a cloud to the side
00:03:34That could very well be
00:03:35What's going on?
00:03:36Something else we've damaged
00:03:37Who's that?
00:03:38That is the 35
00:03:3935 okay
00:03:40So the key here is
00:03:41That is the car that came by on the right hand side of Kabuki Opiyashi
00:03:44Yeah
00:03:45So he may have clipped something
00:03:47Again on board the Alpine
00:03:48This is Nemo Rojas
00:03:49You can see the full course yellow sign being shown to all the drivers that'll be in every car
00:03:54Well, the only part of that I'm not sure of is whether or not it was the 65 and the 35 or just the 35 twice
00:04:0235 did that car go from the left to the right in that blinding
00:04:07Wow
00:04:08There was so many sets of headlights that's really hard to pick out isn't it?
00:04:12That's the problem
00:04:13Stefano Telly looking concerned
00:04:15But we did see Louis Prett get out the car
00:04:17The car though looks dumb
00:04:18Yeah
00:04:21Thomas Bastien there interviewing for the circuit PA
00:04:26Not sure that they know an awful lot more
00:04:28Full course yellow by the way here
00:04:29Yeah
00:04:30Louis Prett out of the car so far
00:04:32I don't think he stayed in that car for a conversation with the crew
00:04:35I think his intention was to get out of the way and get over the barrier
00:04:38Guys are not slowing down
00:04:41Well
00:04:42Again when yeah
00:04:43Full course yellow seem to be causing a lot of confusion this time
00:04:48Let's hear again from Komoe Kobayashi
00:04:51Go
00:04:52Bravo
00:04:54Bravo 12-6 plus acknowledge
00:04:56Bravo 12-6 plus acknowledge
00:04:58We have to try to start the engine
00:05:00The only way to come back is try to use the engine
00:05:02Just try to burn out, try everything
00:05:04We have to use the engine
00:05:05We don't have enough shock to come back with the front motor
00:05:08It's too early
00:05:09The only way to come back with the engine
00:05:11Do what you can
00:05:13Yeah, not enough shock
00:05:14Not enough state of charge
00:05:15Which means the batteries haven't got enough power in them to do the lap
00:05:19And Davidson has been just analysing what we saw there
00:05:22I think there's definitely two LMP2s involved there
00:05:25Yeah
00:05:2666 got hit from behind
00:05:27By a P2 car
00:05:28By the 35 car
00:05:29By the 35
00:05:3035 car hit the Ferrari
00:05:31That's why there's so much damage to the rear end of the Ferrari
00:05:34So there's Ferrari just being hit by the 35
00:05:36He then comes to the right hand side
00:05:37Look and he's still limping past
00:05:39That's why the front left so completely destroyed on the 35
00:05:4235
00:05:43You're right Jim
00:05:44They were slowing down under a full course
00:05:45Yeah Lula
00:05:46Next slow on the Marshall
00:05:47On the Marshall system
00:05:48On the car
00:05:49This isn't a car with 35
00:05:50Yeah
00:05:51No he didn't
00:05:52So he clips the Toyota
00:05:53It's Toyota
00:05:54It's two P2 cars
00:05:55One hit the Ferrari
00:05:57The other one hit the rear of the Toyota
00:05:59And hit it hard
00:06:00So who hit that one?
00:06:01So who else comes in?
00:06:02I think it's the 65
00:06:03I think the 65
00:06:04The Panis car
00:06:06I think from the onboard with Kamui
00:06:08We saw the Panis car on the left
00:06:10I thought it was the colour of the Panis car
00:06:12And I thought it was 65
00:06:13Then saw the 35
00:06:15And I think that misled me
00:06:17I think it was the 65 to the inside
00:06:20Is on board with the 35 car
00:06:24But that's not the replay
00:06:25That's live
00:06:26Yeah
00:06:27Let's try and talk to John
00:06:29John
00:06:30I appreciate the fact you've kept the fans
00:06:33Educated on what's happening here
00:06:35You know my talking
00:06:37Doesn't
00:06:38Doesn't oversee that
00:06:39Well for the love of heck
00:06:40Please don't talk anymore
00:06:41Because something else is going to happen
00:06:43But let's talk about this effort
00:06:45It has been
00:06:46I think the ultimate fan pleaser
00:06:48And coming into this
00:06:50As is always the case
00:06:51When something new comes
00:06:52There's always a little bit
00:06:54That is a number 7
00:06:55Door open
00:06:56That is looking increasingly like
00:06:58It's going to be terminal
00:06:59And we'll come to that
00:07:00As and when we get more information
00:07:02That is the front end of the Alpi
00:07:07That hit the rear of the Toyota
00:07:10Now we can see why that Toyota's got a problem
00:07:12It wasn't a minor dink in the side from a Ferrari
00:07:15It was a fulsome shove in the rear from the Orica
00:07:19So while we're watching this action underway
00:07:24So with this John
00:07:29This is
00:07:30To my mind
00:07:31A further cementing of what's been
00:07:34A very profitable
00:07:36Alliance between two great parts of motorsport
00:07:39The ACO and FI family
00:07:41And the NASCAR family with IMSA
00:07:43Yeah I think Graham
00:07:45First of all
00:07:46Thanks for all the coverage
00:07:48You guys know I listen to you all the time
00:07:50Whether it's a WEC race
00:07:52Or a European Le Mans
00:07:54Or an Asian Le Mans
00:07:56When I'm in Daytona
00:07:57I love hearing the coverage
00:07:59So thanks for all that
00:08:01You're right
00:08:02This week has been a further extension
00:08:06If you will
00:08:07Of the partnership
00:08:08That IMSA and the ACO
00:08:10Have had
00:08:11A strategic alliance agreement
00:08:13For several years
00:08:14Which we of course announced
00:08:15An extension of that last year
00:08:17And you know
00:08:18To get to today
00:08:20You have to look back
00:08:22At what
00:08:23Bill France Senior did
00:08:25In 1976
00:08:26And
00:08:27I think you need to jump to the Toyota
00:08:29We just saw Kamui leap from the car
00:08:31It's a red car
00:08:33The red light is flashing
00:08:35They have
00:08:36A potential
00:08:37High energy problem with the car
00:08:39So that is a red car
00:08:40And that will
00:08:41Require a lot of specialised intervention
00:08:44Now the other car
00:08:45While you were talking
00:08:46That came into the pit lane with damage
00:08:48Was not the 65 Panis car
00:08:50It's the 39 Graf car
00:08:52Another dark blue and white car
00:08:55And that is part of why
00:08:57We thought 65 was on
00:08:59Involved
00:09:00And why
00:09:01The 35 car
00:09:02Was on both sides
00:09:03So the 39 Graf car
00:09:05Has come in with damage
00:09:06That was
00:09:07Likely the other car involved
00:09:09Let's take a look again
00:09:11Watch again here
00:09:12Says that
00:09:13The Graf car on the left there
00:09:14Has it already happened
00:09:15When Kamui gets here
00:09:16He gets tagged by the Graf car
00:09:18There's the JMW car
00:09:20Being hit from the back
00:09:21By we think
00:09:22The Graf 39
00:09:23And knocked over the Toyota
00:09:25And then
00:09:27And then the 35 car
00:09:29Has clipped the back of the Toyota
00:09:32Although I heard the Graf car
00:09:34Had damage on the rear
00:09:35So
00:09:36Unless that was in yet another car involved
00:09:37I think that had damage on the rear guys
00:09:39Because
00:09:40He was next to
00:09:41The 7 car
00:09:42And the 66 came in between them
00:09:45Just
00:09:46A house of fire
00:09:47And
00:09:48And hit
00:09:49The 39
00:09:50Then bounced over into the 7
00:09:52Yeah
00:09:53Well
00:09:54Dramatic moments
00:09:55Really dramatic moments
00:09:56And it's certainly
00:09:57One potential race winning car
00:09:58That looks to be at this stage
00:09:59Out of the race
00:10:01Out of contention definitely
00:10:02Now
00:10:03They can rescue the car
00:10:05And if it can be
00:10:06Confirmed that it is safe to use again
00:10:08They can use it again
00:10:09He won't be excluded
00:10:10From having
00:10:11For having left from the car
00:10:12And got over the barriers
00:10:13That is
00:10:14Part of the safety protocol
00:10:16Unless he's meandered off somewhere
00:10:18Which seems highly unlikely
00:10:20But
00:10:21Yeah
00:10:22From red car to green car
00:10:23Is
00:10:24And actually
00:10:25Particularly given the impact
00:10:26That
00:10:27You sense
00:10:28Might be the reason
00:10:29It's gone from
00:10:30Green car to red car
00:10:31In the first place
00:10:32It's outside assistance
00:10:33That is
00:10:34Oh
00:10:35That is
00:10:36Time up to the window of the car
00:10:37That's over
00:10:38It's over
00:10:39It is
00:10:40The number 7 car
00:10:41That is pretty much
00:10:42The acknowledgement
00:10:43That one of the pair
00:10:44Of Toyota Kazoo racing cars
00:10:46That have dominated here
00:10:48In recent years
00:10:49And have
00:10:50An unblemished record
00:10:52In hypercar
00:10:53Double
00:10:541-2 finishes
00:10:55For
00:10:56Toyota
00:10:57It is done
00:10:58For the number 7 car
00:10:59Well you only need
00:11:00One car
00:11:01To win Le Mans
00:11:02They only have
00:11:03One car
00:11:04Left
00:11:05That might
00:11:06Be enough
00:11:07But again
00:11:08So often
00:11:09Seems to be
00:11:10The number 7 car
00:11:11That runs into bad luck
00:11:12And that
00:11:13I do not think
00:11:14Was any of their own making
00:11:16They were
00:11:17Just doing the right thing
00:11:18Doing the right thing
00:11:19And an innocent victim
00:11:20Of a
00:11:21Major
00:11:22Multicar
00:11:23Pile up
00:11:24So it's going to be
00:11:25A bit of a clean up here
00:11:26For some time
00:11:27Debris
00:11:28Striking cars
00:11:29At least two of them
00:11:30Two more have actually made the pit lane
00:11:31There may well be a further car involved in that
00:11:33There was a lot of cars
00:11:34In a small place at the same time
00:11:36We'll switch back to
00:11:38Ibs the president
00:11:39And project director
00:11:40For the NASCAR Garage 56 car
00:11:42John Toon
00:11:43And John
00:11:44It's been all drama
00:11:45And you brought mostly with you
00:11:46A couple of my teammates in Daytona
00:11:48Texting me saying
00:11:49We're trying to listen to your interview
00:11:50But the guys on track
00:11:51Don't seem to want to hear you talk
00:11:53So
00:11:54Maybe they're trying to tell me
00:11:55Tell me something
00:11:56And I should go back to the garage
00:11:58Tell me
00:11:59Moving on a little
00:12:00We'll come back to a little bit of
00:12:02Carriage 56
00:12:03You've been
00:12:04One of the architects
00:12:06Of where we are
00:12:07Right now
00:12:08Today
00:12:09I
00:12:10I'll tell you right now
00:12:11We're bowled over
00:12:12By what we've seen
00:12:13So far today
00:12:14Tell me your reaction to it
00:12:16I think
00:12:17Beyond expectations
00:12:18Is the best way to describe it
00:12:20And
00:12:21You know
00:12:22Architects
00:12:23A nice
00:12:24A nice term to use
00:12:25But I've really just been
00:12:26One of the teammates
00:12:27Or
00:12:28Maybe it's team captain
00:12:29You got
00:12:31Tremendous partners
00:12:32Involved in this project
00:12:33All the folks at Chevrolet
00:12:35And GM Performance
00:12:36Have been
00:12:37Absolutely
00:12:38Terrific
00:12:39Relative to
00:12:40The powertrain
00:12:41We
00:12:42We wanted to keep
00:12:43As much
00:12:44NASCAR DNA
00:12:45In this project
00:12:46As possible
00:12:47While we had to
00:12:48Endurance-ize
00:12:49The car
00:12:50If you will
00:12:51But this engine
00:12:52Is an
00:12:53R07 cup engine
00:12:54We did some work
00:12:55On the top end
00:12:56The valve train
00:12:57Given experience
00:12:58They've had
00:12:59In endurance racing
00:13:00Goodyear
00:13:01Has been
00:13:02Tremendous
00:13:03They have worked
00:13:04So hard
00:13:05To develop
00:13:06A wider tire
00:13:07Multiple options
00:13:08For wet
00:13:09Intermediate
00:13:10For this beast
00:13:11Of a car
00:13:12If you will
00:13:13And the folks at
00:13:14Hendrick Motorsport
00:13:15You know
00:13:16They don't win
00:13:1714 championships
00:13:18Without being
00:13:19Absolutely
00:13:20At the top of their game
00:13:21Yeah
00:13:22Lots of Eurocentric
00:13:23Race fans
00:13:24We go
00:13:25Okay a NASCAR
00:13:26Is just this kind of
00:13:27Outlier from motorsport
00:13:28And it's got no real relation
00:13:29To anything else
00:13:30But you talked about Hendrick
00:13:31And you know
00:13:32You look at the teams
00:13:33Like Penske South
00:13:34And all the other big operations
00:13:35Asi racing
00:13:36They don't just do one thing
00:13:38They do multiple things
00:13:39They have
00:13:40Feet in all sorts of camps
00:13:42You know a lot of them
00:13:43You see on a regular basis
00:13:44In the InterweatherTech series
00:13:46As well as being
00:13:47You know
00:13:48As well as running cup cars
00:13:49And trucks
00:13:50And everything else
00:13:51So within those organizations
00:13:54Never mind
00:13:55Within the greater sphere
00:13:56There is that interplay
00:13:58Of information
00:13:59That cross breathing
00:14:00That all helps
00:14:01To make both sides
00:14:03Of that deal stronger
00:14:04Yeah
00:14:05There's a
00:14:06Drone footage
00:14:08Video somewhere
00:14:09Of a drone
00:14:11Flying through the
00:14:12Hendrick Motorsports
00:14:13Facility
00:14:14In Concord
00:14:15Anybody
00:14:16That hasn't seen
00:14:17That
00:14:18Needs to take a look
00:14:19And understand
00:14:20What these
00:14:21NASCAR programs
00:14:22Entail
00:14:23They are
00:14:24First class
00:14:25Motorsport organizations
00:14:27And much like
00:14:28When we have
00:14:29IMSA races
00:14:30And the folks at
00:14:32BMW
00:14:33Or Porsche
00:14:34Or Acura
00:14:35Or Cadillac
00:14:37Have a group of engineers
00:14:38Back at home base
00:14:40If you will
00:14:41Hendrick Motorsports
00:14:42Has the same thing
00:14:43On a cup weekend
00:14:44Where they've got
00:14:45A group of engineers
00:14:46And strategists
00:14:47In Concord
00:14:48In a
00:14:49Control room
00:14:50So
00:14:51It's
00:14:52It's
00:14:53You're right
00:14:54I think
00:14:55There's maybe
00:14:56A misperception
00:14:57And the hope
00:14:58I think coming here
00:14:59Was a celebration
00:15:00Of what
00:15:01Bill France
00:15:02Senior did
00:15:03In 1976
00:15:04Replicate it
00:15:05Can I go down
00:15:06A bit on CC
00:15:07Groups and CCR
00:15:08Yes
00:15:11The sneaker
00:15:12Muller by the way
00:15:13Now leading the race
00:15:14Again
00:15:15Peugeot again
00:15:16Lead the race
00:15:17Who would have thought
00:15:18This coming into this race
00:15:20This program being talked down
00:15:22Thoroughly
00:15:23Before this race
00:15:24And all of a sudden
00:15:25They've got two cars
00:15:26They've got two cars still running
00:15:27Well this has been our hope
00:15:28All the way
00:15:29While through
00:15:30We saw the car racing
00:15:31At Monza last July
00:15:32It's never been to Le Mans
00:15:34But there's clearly
00:15:35You know
00:15:36History of Peugeot
00:15:38Aiming to win Le Mans
00:15:40And the real hope
00:15:42Was that this car
00:15:43Would come alive here
00:15:44That it would come good here
00:15:45And that's exactly
00:15:46What seems to have happened
00:15:47So
00:15:48As so often is the case
00:15:49The car has been designed
00:15:51To win Le Mans
00:15:52And hopefully deal
00:15:53With the other races
00:15:54Safety car is out now
00:15:56Again
00:15:57With
00:15:58Rescuing the
00:15:59JMW
00:16:00Ferrari
00:16:01That's fairly
00:16:02Straightforward
00:16:03It's the
00:16:04Toyota isn't it
00:16:05That will need to have
00:16:06Intervention
00:16:07And
00:16:08Well there is
00:16:09Intervention vehicles
00:16:10Steady I think
00:16:11The blue lights
00:16:12I think we saw
00:16:13Weren't medical
00:16:14I think they were
00:16:15Almost certainly
00:16:16The
00:16:17Yeah
00:16:18The
00:16:19Team Red crew
00:16:20But
00:16:21That car will need moving
00:16:22But also
00:16:23There may be
00:16:24Barrier repairs as well
00:16:25We saw cars going off
00:16:26On both sides
00:16:27Down on the run
00:16:28To Tertrouge
00:16:29So that might be happening
00:16:30John's phone is still buzzing
00:16:31There's an awful
00:16:32You know
00:16:33It's midnight here in Europe
00:16:34We're barely getting into
00:16:35Prime time
00:16:36It's time to
00:16:37Blow the froth off
00:16:38A couple
00:16:39Mistakes
00:16:40I wanted to ask another question
00:16:41About this
00:16:42We talk about a racing family
00:16:44Yeah
00:16:45There's one racing family
00:16:46In terms of this
00:16:47Effort with the carriage 56
00:16:48That's supremely important
00:16:49It's 75 years of Porsche
00:16:51And
00:16:52Align with that
00:16:53It's 75 years of NASCAR
00:16:54And one family
00:16:56Yeah
00:16:57Literal families behind that
00:16:58And
00:16:59The latest
00:17:00How can we put it
00:17:01Patriarch of that
00:17:02Is your boss
00:17:03Yeah
00:17:04I mean what
00:17:05How passionate is he about this
00:17:06Jim is a racer to the core
00:17:08As is
00:17:09As is
00:17:10His nephew
00:17:11Ben Kennedy
00:17:12As is
00:17:13His niece
00:17:14Lisa
00:17:15France
00:17:16Kennedy
00:17:17And I have to tell you
00:17:18The culture
00:17:20In the office in Daytona
00:17:22The culture in the Charlotte office
00:17:24The culture at the
00:17:25NASCAR R&D Center
00:17:27It's a group of racers
00:17:29And
00:17:30They operate with
00:17:32The utmost of integrity
00:17:34They
00:17:35Want to do
00:17:37What's best for
00:17:38The sport
00:17:39Not just NASCAR
00:17:40Not just IMSA
00:17:41Not just
00:17:42AMA
00:17:44Flat track racing
00:17:45Which Jim also
00:17:46Has an opportunity
00:17:47To be a part of
00:17:49They want to do
00:17:50What's good for the sport
00:17:51They believe
00:17:52In rising tide lifts all boats
00:17:54And it's just
00:17:55A wonderful place to work
00:17:56And I'm so honoured and blessed
00:17:58To
00:17:59Be a part of it
00:18:00In the IMSA sense
00:18:02In the sense of the
00:18:03Garage 56 project
00:18:04And
00:18:05I too have gone to
00:18:06Flat track races
00:18:07So
00:18:08I've got one final question
00:18:10About the Camaro
00:18:11That is a
00:18:12Fantastic achievement
00:18:13What's been achieved here
00:18:14To bring that car
00:18:16To bring it
00:18:17To be able to
00:18:18Race
00:18:19Safely
00:18:20In amongst this
00:18:21Amazing field
00:18:22On this unique track
00:18:23Is no small feat
00:18:24You're not just going to
00:18:25Parking
00:18:26Are you
00:18:27We're going to see this car
00:18:28Do anything more again
00:18:29Yeah so
00:18:30First of all
00:18:31You know we went back
00:18:32To 1976
00:18:33Where
00:18:34Jim's father Bill
00:18:35Brought two NASCAR
00:18:36Stock cars here
00:18:37They're up in the
00:18:38Fan village
00:18:39If people haven't seen them
00:18:40It's the car that
00:18:42Herschel McGriff drove
00:18:43Herschel's here
00:18:4495 years old
00:18:45And he climbed in that car
00:18:46Yesterday
00:18:47Yeah
00:18:48Ford Torino was the other car
00:18:49And Jim wanted to replicate that
00:18:51And
00:18:52We came here to
00:18:54Showcase what NASCAR is all about
00:18:57We're doing that
00:18:58The Hendrick folks
00:18:59Are running this program
00:19:01In the garage
00:19:02Like
00:19:03They do everything else
00:19:04And that's
00:19:05Like they're competing for a win
00:19:07And
00:19:08If anyone
00:19:09Has seen the garage
00:19:10Or walked through there
00:19:11It is first class
00:19:13It has
00:19:14An absolute award winning
00:19:16Group of folks
00:19:17Doing the pit stops
00:19:18Which was evident
00:19:19In the pit stop challenge
00:19:20They
00:19:21They finished ahead
00:19:22Of all of the GT entries
00:19:24With a 10.3
00:19:25Second
00:19:26Four tire change
00:19:27They were P5 overall
00:19:29Like
00:19:30They are taking this very seriously
00:19:31And
00:19:32As I've been in the garage all day
00:19:33Greg Ives
00:19:34And Chad Knauss
00:19:35Are
00:19:36Battling like they do
00:19:37Every Sunday
00:19:38So
00:19:39It's really special
00:19:40You've been here before
00:19:41You knew what to expect
00:19:43Okay
00:19:44When we were
00:19:45In
00:19:46Le Pésar
00:19:47Scrutineering in the center
00:19:48Of the city
00:19:49And
00:19:50All the guys came in
00:19:51In their blue shirts
00:19:52We knew immediately who they were
00:19:53And I went over
00:19:54They were about
00:19:55Fuck tall
00:19:56They are
00:19:57Decent height
00:19:58You know
00:19:59None of these short Europeans
00:20:00They
00:20:01The car started to come
00:20:02In through the first 10
00:20:03And they were all like
00:20:04Kind of looking over the barriers
00:20:05From the inside
00:20:06With all the crowd
00:20:07Looking over the barriers
00:20:08From the outside
00:20:09I was talking to these guys
00:20:10And I said
00:20:11This isn't standard tech
00:20:12Is it
00:20:13You're not just pushing the car
00:20:14Into a garage
00:20:15For the NASCAR guys
00:20:16To check you
00:20:17Have you ever seen
00:20:18Anywhere more French
00:20:19In your life
00:20:20Because the center square there
00:20:21The Place de la République
00:20:22Is
00:20:23Classic
00:20:24Franca
00:20:25All the way around
00:20:26And they were
00:20:27You know
00:20:28Boiling sunshine
00:20:29So they were at home with that
00:20:30Big crowds watching tech
00:20:32And the proximity of the crowds
00:20:34As well
00:20:35Is something again
00:20:36That the cup teams
00:20:37Will be very familiar with
00:20:38Because that's all part
00:20:39Of the U.S. racing scene
00:20:40But
00:20:41Has it been fun
00:20:42Watching them
00:20:43As first timers come here
00:20:44And seeing all this stuff
00:20:46And discovering the track
00:20:47And the parade
00:20:48And everything that goes with it
00:20:50That goes with it
00:20:51There's absolutely no doubt
00:20:52And besides Jim France
00:20:53Being on cloud nine
00:20:55And Rick Hendrick
00:20:56Being on cloud nine
00:20:57And Jeff Gordon
00:20:58Who is here all day today
00:20:59Being on cloud nine
00:21:01The thing that I think
00:21:02Is most satisfying for me
00:21:04This week
00:21:05Besides the media coverage
00:21:06Which is again
00:21:07Beyond expectations
00:21:08And blown up
00:21:09Is the men and women
00:21:11On this project
00:21:12Many of them
00:21:13Many of them
00:21:14Not even having been
00:21:15Outside the U.S. before
00:21:17Ever
00:21:18And so here they are
00:21:19Planted in Lazard
00:21:21And they are part of this program
00:21:23A couple of them
00:21:24Have old camcorders
00:21:25And they've been taking it in
00:21:26And I just
00:21:27I love that for them
00:21:29That they're so happy
00:21:31Well here's another
00:21:32GM product
00:21:33Let's hear from Earl Bamba
00:21:34Okay, you'll give some feedback
00:21:35On the track conditions
00:21:36In general
00:21:38Yeah, I know
00:21:39It's dried up
00:21:40I was making it easy earlier
00:21:42Because I just can't see the road
00:21:44It's fine
00:21:45But now to be honest
00:21:46It's dry
00:21:47Except just the
00:21:48Sort of
00:21:49Chicane one
00:21:50Everything else is good
00:21:52Actually the last message
00:21:53We heard from Nico Muller
00:21:55He was asking the team
00:21:56About turning down TCR
00:21:58So whether or not
00:21:59He was able to
00:22:00Back off the traction control
00:22:01Yeah
00:22:02That they'd ramped up a little bit
00:22:03In the wet conditions
00:22:04There you can see
00:22:05The red lights still flashing
00:22:06In the 7 Toyota
00:22:07There is the intervention crew
00:22:09And it's not for medical purposes
00:22:11Is that
00:22:12Is to try and make that car safe
00:22:14Indeed
00:22:15With these high voltage
00:22:16Hybrid systems
00:22:17Very briefly actually
00:22:18Yeah
00:22:19It's a whole new learning
00:22:20Isn't it?
00:22:21You know
00:22:22Europeans go and watch EV500
00:22:23People are leaping around
00:22:24And having buckets of water
00:22:25Throwing on them
00:22:26That's not something we're used to
00:22:27Because we don't use
00:22:28Methanol in racing
00:22:29Right
00:22:30But that's standard there
00:22:31And these systems
00:22:32Will have to become standard
00:22:34Every corner worker
00:22:35That goes to every track
00:22:36That track that you race at
00:22:37That we race at
00:22:38Has to understand the basic rules
00:22:40Of how you deal with cars
00:22:42When the red lights are flashing
00:22:44And the answer is
00:22:45Don't go near them
00:22:47So
00:22:48Yeah
00:22:49It's been a nice
00:22:50Opportunity for us
00:22:51On the IMSA side
00:22:52To get with
00:22:53All of the suppliers
00:22:55The Bosch
00:22:56The Williams
00:22:57And all of our safety team
00:22:58We have a great
00:22:59Track services group
00:23:01In IMSA
00:23:02And Robert Bosworth
00:23:04Leads that
00:23:05With Roy Spielman
00:23:06They've done an amazing job
00:23:07Of educating
00:23:08The corner marshals
00:23:09At each one of the events
00:23:11They're very crystal clear
00:23:13High voltage
00:23:14Safety protocols
00:23:15The Phil Pearson
00:23:16Simon
00:23:17And Matt Curdoch
00:23:18Have it developed
00:23:19So I'm really proud
00:23:20Of how we've learned that
00:23:22As number one
00:23:23Is safety in our sport
00:23:24And I think
00:23:25This is a perfect example
00:23:27Of that
00:23:28It is an amazing new era
00:23:30In this top class
00:23:31Hypercar here
00:23:32The GTP
00:23:33Of course
00:23:34In the 26 Sports Car Championship
00:23:35We've seen one new car
00:23:36There's definitely
00:23:37Coming the way
00:23:38At the WEC
00:23:39There's one more to come
00:23:40At least
00:23:41There's definitely
00:23:42Coming your way
00:23:43For part season
00:23:44At least John
00:23:45Next year
00:23:46And that is
00:23:47The new Lamborghini
00:23:48Lichet chassis
00:23:49Lamborghini
00:23:50GTP car
00:23:51I was at the
00:23:52The Royal Test
00:23:53At Daytona
00:23:54I think
00:23:55There were more people
00:23:56At the Royal Test
00:23:57Than at the race
00:23:58The race itself
00:23:59An extraordinary
00:24:00And an extraordinary race
00:24:01That's it
00:24:02That's it
00:24:03And I said
00:24:04When you arrived here
00:24:05And sat down
00:24:06And we put that smile
00:24:07As wide as your face
00:24:08Despite
00:24:09Just how busy it's been
00:24:10I've not seen you
00:24:11With that smile this year
00:24:12You must be buzzing
00:24:13I think
00:24:14I think
00:24:15I'm happy
00:24:16I'm happy for our sport
00:24:18To be candid
00:24:20You know
00:24:21There's been a lot of people
00:24:22That put in effort
00:24:24To get to
00:24:25Convergence
00:24:26There's
00:24:27You know
00:24:28Bob Panos had a vision
00:24:29Jim Brands had a vision
00:24:31Scott Epperton put time in on it
00:24:33Ed Bennett put time in on it
00:24:35I was fortunate to arrive at a time where we just had to get it done
00:24:41And
00:24:42And
00:24:43I'm happy for our sport
00:24:44The other thing I'm happy about is
00:24:46You mentioned the Royal
00:24:48You mentioned Daytona
00:24:49We go to Sebring
00:24:50And
00:24:51You know
00:24:52The attendance at that event
00:24:53Sets a record
00:24:54We go to Long Beach
00:24:55And I know Jim McCallion's quite happy with what happened there in terms of fan attendance
00:24:59And sellouts of suites and grandstand seats
00:25:02And then our friends at WeatherTech Raceway in Pinniseca announced a 35% increase
00:25:09The highest record ever in advanced sales in that event
00:25:13So it just there's a tremendous amount of momentum and lift
00:25:16I think we're doing the right things around sustainability with a new fuel in IMSA
00:25:22Through our partners at VP Racing Fuel
00:25:25We're using a hybrid that gives us a longer stint lane
00:25:29We are decreasing tire allocations with Michelin
00:25:35We couple all those things together
00:25:37We have the most sustainable racing on the planet
00:25:40The cars look amazing
00:25:41You mentioned the Lamborghini
00:25:43I've seen some photos
00:25:45It's just unbelievable
00:25:48Yeah, John, you shouldn't
00:25:50No, don't show us that
00:25:51Back, sir
00:25:52I didn't say I had them
00:25:53I've seen them
00:25:54We had a great meeting with Giorgio Osana
00:25:57Stephan Dinkelman
00:25:58And his entire staff
00:26:00Have done an incredible job on that car
00:26:03And that was the intent
00:26:04And I think the credit goes back to Jim France
00:26:07To have the vision that we can build prototype race cars
00:26:11That speak the brand in their styling
00:26:14And that's what these cars do
00:26:15There's a strange thing isn't there
00:26:17You and I have had conversations
00:26:18Have had conversations
00:26:19With people up and down the pit lane
00:26:20In the press room
00:26:21Away from the tracks
00:26:22Lots of the talk before we came into this
00:26:27Was so much more spec
00:26:29B.O.P.
00:26:30It's not pure racing
00:26:32No one's saying that
00:26:33This has been an astonishing race
00:26:35Daytona is an astonishing race
00:26:37And all it's done
00:26:39Is to open up a robot
00:26:41To make these things
00:26:42Look different again
00:26:44Yeah
00:26:45Yeah
00:26:46And I think
00:26:47We want the fans
00:26:48To identify with the GT cars
00:26:50That they see on the street
00:26:51There's no doubt
00:26:52And you've got a tremendous number of
00:26:54GT cars running in IMSA
00:26:56Ten I believe manufacturers running
00:26:59Certainly several here
00:27:00And as the GT3 spec becomes
00:27:03The way forward here
00:27:05You're going to see more of that
00:27:06But then you have
00:27:07And that's what is today
00:27:09Those are the cars that people see on the road
00:27:12And then these hyper cars
00:27:14Or our GTP cars
00:27:15Are about what's possible going forward
00:27:18And I think that's how each of these manufacturers
00:27:21Has embraced it
00:27:22They've got the design
00:27:23They've got potential customer car sales
00:27:26In the wings
00:27:27So again
00:27:29I smile because I'm happy for our sport
00:27:31I think it's great for the people who have followed endurance sports car racing
00:27:36But I also think
00:27:37There's a bunch of young little boys and girls
00:27:39That I've seen here at this race track
00:27:41In awe of what they're seeing
00:27:43And that's our next generation of fans
00:27:45And we need to do everything we can
00:27:47To get them to races
00:27:48And get them engaged
00:27:49John, are you guys doing anything to encourage the customer programs amongst these factors?
00:27:56I know for Porsche that's easy
00:27:57That's in their ethos
00:27:58But for some of these other factors
00:28:00It's not really in their DNA to have customer programs
00:28:04No, you hit a nail, Jim
00:28:06And as you know
00:28:07My background was all about customer sales
00:28:10So if I have anything to say about it
00:28:13It absolutely will be customer opportunities
00:28:16There's a lot of spec me out
00:28:18Is running around
00:28:19Yes, there were
00:28:20In NX5
00:28:21But clearly it needs to work in their business model
00:28:25I believe it's possible
00:28:26You sell customer cars
00:28:27It might be able to fund
00:28:30Or help fund
00:28:32A factory indoor stepper
00:28:34You know
00:28:35Further development
00:28:36That's right
00:28:37And I think customer programs are great
00:28:40And when you look back
00:28:41As Graham said
00:28:42To maybe the heyday of the sport
00:28:45I think people said golden era
00:28:47I think we're in the platinum era now
00:28:48But you know
00:28:50There were customer
00:28:51The customer teams were the foundation of GTP and IMSA
00:28:55And I hope that we can get back to that
00:28:58Clearly to have you know Cadillac Racing
00:29:02To have the accurate teams of Mike Shank Racing
00:29:05Meyershank Racing
00:29:06Meyershank Racing
00:29:07And Wayne Taylor with Andretti
00:29:08To have Penske
00:29:09To have these top teams
00:29:11Canassi of course
00:29:12Action Express
00:29:13That's great
00:29:14We need to get those customer teams going as well
00:29:17Proton I believe is announced now
00:29:20Yes, yeah
00:29:21Obviously JDC kicked off at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca
00:29:26So I think the momentum is there Jim
00:29:29And if this is going to succeed
00:29:30We're going to need all the customer teams
00:29:32We can get
00:29:33You made mentioned
00:29:35Spec me artists
00:29:37Marcus Hazelgrove
00:29:38Just emailed me to say hi
00:29:40I think we've got
00:29:41Steph Wentworth down in pit lane
00:29:43Let's catch up with the pits
00:29:45Steph Wentworth down at Graff Racing
00:29:47Steph what do you know?
00:29:48I'm at the number 39
00:29:50With Guido van dergaard
00:29:51Could you just explain what happened in that incident
00:29:53From your perspective?
00:29:56A car flew over me
00:29:57And I think he came out of nowhere
00:29:59And he took out three cars
00:30:01Which is such a pity
00:30:03Because we were running really well
00:30:05Of course we were one lap down
00:30:06But I was pushing quite hard
00:30:07I think we were in the lead lap
00:30:09We got a very good two stints in the rain
00:30:12Which was not very easy
00:30:14And then this stupid incident happened
00:30:16You know, I mean
00:30:17Yeah, you're preparing for full course yellow
00:30:19So you don't want to make any mistakes
00:30:20You want to do it correctly
00:30:22And then one car just flew over me
00:30:24A Ferrari
00:30:25And that's
00:30:26Yeah, we have a blow of damage
00:30:27So the team is trying to fix it
00:30:29So hopefully we can go out
00:30:31And see how the car is
00:30:32And we can continue
00:30:33Well you've just been looking at a lot of data
00:30:35Is there a lot for you to learn
00:30:36To be able to implement in the next stints?
00:30:38No, I mean
00:30:40The speed was good
00:30:41I think it was one of the quickest on the track
00:30:43I think the start of the race with the car
00:30:47Which was not so very good
00:30:48It was a bit of oversteer
00:30:49But now when it starts to get cooler
00:30:51The car starts to be in a better position
00:30:53And I was very happy with my stints
00:30:56But yeah, this is a big set-up
00:30:59And I hope we need to go out
00:31:00Shane, hope Steve
00:31:02I've got on track with you
00:31:03One quick thing
00:31:04We had already had a retirement
00:31:06Of a home of guard
00:31:08Before the incident
00:31:09That looks likely
00:31:10To mean the end of the number 7
00:31:12This evening
00:31:13Remarkably
00:31:14Remarkably
00:31:15The end of the number 75
00:31:17Portion
00:31:18Thanks for the ex-parison
00:31:19I've got to see data here on Twitter
00:31:21The first top-class retirement
00:31:24At the one
00:31:25Since 8.5 Palace
00:31:272020
00:31:28Ooh
00:31:29That's some status there
00:31:31That for me, Captain Miller
00:31:33Has been part
00:31:34The remarkable part of this
00:31:35We have seen cars that have problems
00:31:37But these are very new cars
00:31:39And as you were saying earlier, Martin
00:31:40A high voltage system
00:31:41Is familiar with these cars
00:31:42That makes
00:31:43If you like
00:31:44The serviceability of these cars
00:31:46More challenging
00:31:47But these cars
00:31:48Have been to the garage
00:31:49They're back out of the garage
00:31:50And they're still running and racing
00:31:52Well, let's take a look
00:31:53At those incidents though
00:31:5475 Porsche
00:31:56Turns out to have been
00:31:57An oil pressure problem
00:31:59Fuel pressure
00:32:00Fuel pressure
00:32:01A fuel pressure
00:32:02Action Express
00:32:03Incident
00:32:04By Coles
00:32:05Incident
00:32:06Yes
00:32:07Toyota number 7
00:32:08Incident not of their own making
00:32:09Hurst Team Jota
00:32:10Incident
00:32:11Yes
00:32:12Glickenhaus
00:32:13Whichever one had the broken front
00:32:15It did
00:32:16Incident
00:32:17Yes
00:32:18They have all been racing incidents
00:32:19Where cars have come together
00:32:21Either with each other
00:32:22Or the scenery
00:32:24Not one of them yet
00:32:25Apart from the 75 Porsche
00:32:27Potentially
00:32:28Has actually been
00:32:29A mechanically induced retirement
00:32:32And again
00:32:33These cars
00:32:34You know
00:32:35They weren't even real life testing
00:32:3912 months ago
00:32:40Never mind racetrack testing
00:32:42They were still
00:32:43They were still
00:32:44You know
00:32:45Building up from single cylinder test beds
00:32:48And from
00:32:49CAD
00:32:50And
00:32:51You know
00:32:52Just
00:32:53Being thought of
00:32:54And finalised
00:32:55Before homologation
00:32:56So
00:32:57These are things that are still
00:32:58You know
00:32:59Think back to the 956's
00:33:01In the first year of Group C
00:33:03They were not the all conquering devices
00:33:05They became
00:33:06And
00:33:07You know
00:33:08These cars are going to develop
00:33:09And
00:33:10Fast
00:33:11That's the
00:33:12That's the progress
00:33:13We're going to see
00:33:14And it's funny
00:33:15As you're getting input from listeners
00:33:16I'm getting text messages
00:33:17And
00:33:18You know
00:33:19It was reminded
00:33:20That
00:33:21You know
00:33:22Rick Hendrick's operation
00:33:23Ran the Corvette GTP program
00:33:25With Doc Bundy
00:33:26And Sarah Vandenberg
00:33:27Rick talks fondly about that
00:33:29They got the car running
00:33:30They drove around
00:33:32As part of the
00:33:3324 minutes of Daytona
00:33:34Before the Rolex 24
00:33:37And
00:33:38I was just reminded
00:33:39That text
00:33:40With photos
00:33:41By the way
00:33:42That was
00:33:43Really excited
00:33:44That was the
00:33:45GF Goodrich delivery
00:33:46That's right
00:33:47Rick
00:33:48Rick told
00:33:49Rick told a funny story
00:33:50About that
00:33:51They were at Road America
00:33:52And Rick had the car
00:33:53All liveried
00:33:54Liveried up
00:33:55And of course
00:33:56In those days
00:33:57It was not really
00:33:58Decals
00:33:59It was
00:34:00Hand painted stuff
00:34:01And
00:34:02I guess
00:34:03Maybe the paperwork
00:34:04Not done yet
00:34:05And the GM folks
00:34:06Said
00:34:07Well
00:34:08You can't unveil a car
00:34:09But they're literally
00:34:10Ready to keep
00:34:11Go racing
00:34:12And Rick said
00:34:13Well
00:34:14Maybe since I'm
00:34:15A GM
00:34:16Goodrich dealer
00:34:17We'll suggest
00:34:18That
00:34:19It's my program
00:34:20That's doing it
00:34:21But what a great era
00:34:22But again
00:34:23I think
00:34:24We're at it now
00:34:25Well we've
00:34:26Now funny you should
00:34:27Talk about that
00:34:28Because the first thought
00:34:29I had when we saw
00:34:30The Mustang GT3
00:34:31Car unveiled here
00:34:32Is okay
00:34:33Mustang GTP
00:34:34That's ringing all sorts
00:34:35Of feel good
00:34:36Bells with me
00:34:37Those things
00:34:39You know
00:34:40Scott Sharp's still around
00:34:41Let's have a third go around
00:34:42Let's have a third go around
00:34:44We've Scott Sharp
00:34:45In GT3 Mustangs
00:34:46I think
00:34:47That ship has said
00:34:48But I was going to ask you
00:34:49About Mustang
00:34:50Because
00:34:51We shouldn't forget
00:34:52Is it's
00:34:53Mixed last
00:34:54GT Racing, again in its comp, the ACO switching to a GT3 picture, you guys have already made that switch,
00:35:02and you've got something we don't have in the FI world during the championship, which is a Ford Pro GT3-based class.
00:35:07We've seen the new Mustang GT3 for the first time here this weekend.
00:35:13We know there's going to be an opportunity to see that car racing in GT3 Pro next year.
00:35:18We know also Corvette heading there wants an opportunity for two of the biggest names in not just U.S. motorsport,
00:35:26but the U.S. automotor trade to go head to head.
00:35:28Yeah, for sure, and we have a saying in the office, the market will speak,
00:35:33and the folks at Corvette felt like a GT3 customer car was right.
00:35:40Clearly, Ford has now unveiled their GT3 Mustang, which they believe also can be a proper customer program.
00:35:47They have also said, besides customer programs, we'd like to go head to head with some of the other manufacturers,
00:35:55and so that's why we have GTD Pro.
00:35:59It's because they want to race against one another, clearly a team like FAF, independently owned,
00:36:05but has been a landing place for some of the GT factory drivers in the Porsche family.
00:36:11Aston Martin decided to do the same.
00:36:14Lexus Racing with Pastor Sullivan is there doing a GTD Pro effort, so there's a place for it.
00:36:21We tried to simplify it with the same BOP, and I've been asked a lot,
00:36:26well, wow, sometimes I see a GTD car ahead of a GTD Pro car.
00:36:31Well, you know what?
00:36:31We're here to go racing, and why not put the cars out there at the scene?
00:36:39Was it Ben Keating behind the wheel?
00:36:41Yeah, exactly.
00:36:42That's probably what happened.
00:36:44Good point.
00:36:45Ben has done an awesome job, and it's been fun being part of Garage 56
00:36:49because we've been part of the GM performance space this weekend,
00:36:54and what a guy, Ben, is a successful car dealer in Texas.
00:36:59I think he has now 27 stores, and, man,
00:37:02has he dedicated himself to becoming a great race car driver.
00:37:06And he's running out of brand-new cars to race, you know,
00:37:09so he needs a new generation because he's never raced a Mustang.
00:37:13Had a poor GT on the top step of the podium here at Le Mans
00:37:15when the checkered flag fell, lest we forget.
00:37:17Orza, and what he ran a Viper for a long time.
00:37:21I think this is 9th start at Le Mans in 8 different cars.
00:37:25Yeah.
00:37:25Quite remarkable.
00:37:26Good step there.
00:37:27And he's never even raced LMP this side of the Atlantic either.
00:37:31Yes, he has.
00:37:32Yeah.
00:37:32Came here with the Riley, and he raced in the Oracle Series 3,
00:37:35which is with Greg Murphy.
00:37:37We're going to say good luck to you for the moment.
00:37:39I want you to do one more thing on our behalf,
00:37:41and on behalf of the fans' track side, certainly.
00:37:47Let's have a listen to what's going on for race control before we do that.
00:37:59Car 56 must enter in the pits in the next passage
00:38:05and go out behind safety car C.
00:38:08Car 34 must enter in the pits on the next passage
00:38:12and go out behind safety car A.
00:38:16That's significant.
00:38:18That is the leader in the GTE.
00:38:20And I sense what's happened there is that they have either not stopped at a red light
00:38:26or been shown a green light and beetled out just before the safety car queue arrived.
00:38:31Now, there was a little bit of feeling from the Corvette racing guys that that had happened
00:38:35in the first safety car period.
00:38:37The cars have been released into a safety car queue that maybe gave them an advantage
00:38:44that perhaps shouldn't have come their way.
00:38:46But you're right.
00:38:47It's the it's the project one car, which is one of them in the 34 into Europol car as well.
00:38:54I think Steph may be down at Racing Team Turkey.
00:38:59Steph, what do you know?
00:39:01I am indeed.
00:39:01And I'm with Dries Van Thoor, who jumped into the car just to do two laps.
00:39:05But unfortunately, something's gone wrong, hasn't it?
00:39:08Yeah, unfortunately, I only did a few laps today.
00:39:11Well, we would yesterday include it.
00:39:14Yeah, we still have to investigate what really is going on.
00:39:17Just something that keeps breaking.
00:39:21We have a mechanical issue.
00:39:23We just have to check what it is.
00:39:26It's just a bit too dangerous for us to go out again.
00:39:29Yeah, we're scared that it happens again on another place where we actually don't want it to happen.
00:39:33So, yeah, very unfortunate.
00:39:35We're really looking strong going into this race.
00:39:40Unfortunately, like it is for everybody else, there's a mayhem out there.
00:39:43And the weather is really making it very, very difficult for everyone.
00:39:47But, yeah, unfortunately, we're going to have to see what happened and see what happened with the car
00:39:53because there was something wrong, but we don't know what yet.
00:39:56How did the car feel, though, before?
00:39:58Did you enjoy driving it?
00:39:59How were the conditions actually out there?
00:40:00I mean, I only did the start so far.
00:40:03I did not so many laps yet in the race.
00:40:08I think generally the car felt really good.
00:40:11I think with the track involvement, it would only come more to us,
00:40:15knowing how the race always evolves.
00:40:17At the end of the day, not really a lot to say about my race.
00:40:24I mean, I didn't do so much.
00:40:25So, yeah, I just watched and hoped for the best.
00:40:28Well, it's a big shame for the team.
00:40:30I'm sure you guys were hoping for it much better, so.
00:40:32Yeah, we know.
00:40:33They will try hard.
00:40:33They will come back.
00:40:34And, yeah, we'll make it work again.
00:40:37Stronger than ever.
00:40:39Thank you, Jules Van Tor.
00:40:41Thank you, Steph Wentworth.
00:40:42And, of course, that car racing in the European Le Mans series
00:40:45on the feeder series for the World Endurance Championship.
00:40:48The overall win in LMP2, the overall race win, in fact, for a Pro-Am car.
00:40:53And that's, I think, only the second, possibly third time
00:40:55that's ever happened with a bronze-ranked driver aboard.
00:40:58I'll finish the point and then let you get on to do more good things,
00:41:02if there are indeed any more good things you could possibly do.
00:41:05I'd like you to do something for us, please, John.
00:41:07I'd like, when the next time you speak to Mr. France,
00:41:09to say thank you very much for this and to everybody involved in it
00:41:12because it has raised so much interest, so much passion, so much joy,
00:41:18the fact that something different is out there alongside all the other good news.
00:41:22This has been a real plus here at the Centenary of Le Mans.
00:41:26It is a meeting of codes.
00:41:29I hope it's not the last we see of this great car.
00:41:33Well, I promise I'll do that.
00:41:35And I also want to say thanks to all the folks that are tuned in around the world
00:41:40listening to you guys, as I do, wherever I am, or especially when I'm in Daytona.
00:41:46And so many people are texting and watching at home.
00:41:51So hi to so many dear friends back in the States, former Mazda teammates,
00:41:55so many people are listening and watching this great 100th anniversary.
00:42:00And I extend a huge congratulations to the ACO for, you know, this morning.
00:42:06Oh, my gosh.
00:42:07That crowd.
00:42:09The people, the fanfare, just remarkable pre-race.
00:42:15And, you know, we all like to see lots of racing,
00:42:18so I pray that the second half of this race is less filled with safety cars
00:42:23and more with wheel-to-wheel racing.
00:42:26Good stuff.
00:42:27Thank you so much indeed to Garage 56, Mascar Garage 56.
00:42:32Team president?
00:42:33Is that a team director?
00:42:35I'd like to say just team mate because I've made so many great friends through this project.
00:42:42Folks that I idolized, you know, Chad Knauss, Jimmy Johnson.
00:42:45The fact that even Rick Hendrick calls me up, hey, Big John, I'm just blown away that these people
00:42:52that are such icons and Hall of Famers in our sport I've had the chance to work with now.
00:42:57But the folks at GM, the folks at Goodyear, they have all stepped up big time to see this through
00:43:03and to see all the joy on their faces.
00:43:06That's been the biggest reward for me.
00:43:08Thanks a million, John.
00:43:09And a great night to everybody down at City.
00:43:12Well, it is indeed, not Garage 56, but Garage 62, I believe.
00:43:16Yeah, we're first one there at pit out and it's been great, you know, the fans across the way
00:43:23when the boys do the pit stops are roaring to see the floor jack out.
00:43:29And it's just been a great week and I want to keep the momentum going.
00:43:33And we've got 15 more hours to do it.
00:43:37Well, you know, it raises 300,000 smiles every time it comes around.
00:43:41And that's just here.
00:43:42That's before it even gets on camera.
00:43:45I mean, those numbers are just frankly slightly crazy.
00:43:48And I didn't know that Jeff Gordon was here.
00:43:51I bet he's going, oh, what?
00:43:52You couldn't have done this 20 years ago?
00:43:54What now am I?
00:43:55Chopped liver?
00:43:55You know, for the 50th anniversary when I was in my prime.
00:43:58I bet he's loving every minute of this.
00:44:01And I know Jimmy is.
00:44:02Jimmy was saying actually when he was at the last safety car, he was driving slowly.
00:44:05All the fans were waving.
00:44:06So I was waving at them.
00:44:08Well, this is why our current safety car is out.
00:44:11Cars called out in the slow zone.
00:44:13And that has led to the demise of the number seven Toyota.
00:44:17We saw it on the back of the flatbed.
00:44:19It has been made safe, but it is now on its way to area 51.
00:44:22And that's where it will remain.
00:44:2566 JMW Porsche also out of action.
00:44:28The 39 graph racing cars we heard from Gero van der Garde.
00:44:32That was used as a take-off ramp unintentionally by the 66 car.
00:44:37And we also have problems for 35.
00:44:41So slight correction.
00:44:43We think you'll be right behind the leader when all this rearranging happens.
00:44:49All I got to do is take your mouth.
00:44:52Or just pass him cleanly.
00:44:57Oh, Jimmy.
00:44:59How was it?
00:44:59You can pass him.
00:45:01We're better than the Bojo.
00:45:03We're better than that.
00:45:03For the record, that was a Frenchman that said that.
00:45:06For the record, that was a Frenchman.
00:45:09Got to give these people what they're here for.
00:45:11A little Sebastian magic.
00:45:16Thank you guys so much.
00:45:17I don't want to distract anything from the proper coverage here.
00:45:21I really appreciate the opportunity to tell stories.
00:45:24And you better let Anthony back in here or I'm going to be in big trouble.
00:45:27We've got some more legends to come along.
00:45:29There's one sitting in the back of the booth at the moment.
00:45:33We might not get him in.
00:45:34We might be going back to shuffling some cars around soon.
00:45:36All I know is I'm not coming back because what I've done to this race in the time that I've been here is not particularly good.
00:45:43But it's given us a great opportunity to learn a little bit more about the program.
00:45:47And that's the hat you came in with Garage 56.
00:45:50That's the one you can still proudly carry.
00:45:53Yeah, there's an Ipsa logo underneath this Garage 56 apparel.
00:45:57Thank you guys.
00:45:58We have to decide which way we slice you to see which goes all the way through.
00:46:02Well, the Ipsa office has been open from 8 to 5.
00:46:06And at 5 o'clock, the Garage 56 office is open.
00:46:09But that's how it's been the last couple of years.
00:46:11But just so happy that we can celebrate NASCAR and I think show the passionate European fans what NASCAR is about.
00:46:20And hopefully the NASCAR fans back in the States are cheering on what is a really, really special entry.
00:46:27Fabulous.
00:46:28John Doodan, for now, thank you very much indeed.
00:46:30Good luck to the guys in Car24 for the next 15 hours and 12 minutes of the 2023, the centenary running of the 24 hours of Le Mans.
00:46:41Thanks, guys.
00:46:42We are under safety car at Le Mans.
00:46:45We have 15 and a quarter hours of the race remaining.
00:46:49So eight hours in, we're well into the second third or into the second third of the race.
00:46:55All sorts of anniversaries being celebrated, the centenary of Le Mans, 75 years of Porsche, 75 years of NASCAR.
00:47:04And of course, the big one, 50 years of the British Lawnmower Racing Association, the BLMRA famed for their 24-hour race.
00:47:13They are celebrating their 50th anniversary this year with a 500-lap overnight race.
00:47:22Should take around 15, 16 hours.
00:47:24So really a sprint race by Wisber Green standards.
00:47:28Not actually sure if it is in Wisber Green.
00:47:30But William Ticehurst, thank you very much for that reminder as a former member, mower builder and racer of the British Lawnmower Racing Association.
00:47:41I'm glad to represent a bit of per herbum ad astra here.
00:47:45You realise what's going to happen now.
00:47:46Mrs. Haven is going to insist that you show how good you are with a lawnmower.
00:47:50She's asleep.
00:47:51I'm also good with a dishwasher and a washing machine.
00:47:54And I know where the Hoover lives.
00:47:56Wow.
00:47:57She's asleep.
00:48:00We're going to welcome to the guest chair another legend of Le Mans.
00:48:04He's looking at me in that funny way.
00:48:06But he is because we're coming into it.
00:48:09We're just talking to John Doonan there, Martin, about the potential for a revival of the privateer marketplace in the top class.
00:48:17Sitting next to both of us, between us at the moment, is a man behind an effort that shone very brightly indeed and showed what could be done with ambition and passion.
00:48:27And not only that, he's going to tell me for how long, but I think for about half a lap he led this great race.
00:48:33Martin Short, welcome.
00:48:34From Royal Centre Racing.
00:48:36I know you're now in a kind of gentle semi-retirement with his lovely wife, Michelle, and one of his exceptionally talented sons.
00:48:45What do you think of this race?
00:48:46You were here with the fabulous Dolaris, then the Pescarola, perhaps a less happy memory with the Radical, but that was there too.
00:48:55But with an array of GT race cars, an array of races worldwide with those, you've had a chance to stand trackside and watch what's going on.
00:49:04Aside from the fact that it's been a little bit of mayhem, it has been fun.
00:49:08This race shows what competition brings to a race like this.
00:49:16And, you know, when I was doing it, we had Audi, and we were all cannon fodder, essentially, for the manufacturers.
00:49:25We were there to make the race.
00:49:26And Audi did a magnificent job.
00:49:29And we were always going to be the best of the rest.
00:49:33And then Peugeot came along, Toyota.
00:49:37And there's never really been a race like this.
00:49:43And...
00:49:44Just listen to what's going on with Toyota.
00:49:48Okay, Joe, you can go to tyre one, please.
00:49:50Tyre one.
00:49:51If not already.
00:49:53Yeah, tyre one already.
00:49:54Okay, Joe, as we are fuel limited, we want to try something to save fuel.
00:49:59So, Bravo 5.1, Bravo 5.1 for more engine braking to try and save fuel.
00:50:04There's some work going on inside the cockpits of these still extremely complex top-class hybrid cars.
00:50:12But a different environment, a different time.
00:50:16Henri Pescarolo, you know, very much there.
00:50:18Hugh de Charnock, still here, 50 years of Orica.
00:50:21And that's where those fabulous Dalaras came from.
00:50:24That's right.
00:50:25But this race is amazing.
00:50:27It's absolutely amazing.
00:50:29Because these drivers are under such pressure, they're putting themselves...
00:50:34They're loading the pressure on themselves.
00:50:36They're making mistakes.
00:50:37Other people are making mistakes.
00:50:39The slow zones are causing carnage.
00:50:42It's just kicking off, you know.
00:50:44And, you know, I started, you know, in a not miserable fashion, but, you know,
00:50:50we never thought that we could ever beat the Audis.
00:50:52Well, there's, you know, who knows how many hypercars.
00:50:55And they're just all going for it.
00:50:56And now we've got the Peugeot topping, you know, the least fancied.
00:51:00It's just extraordinary.
00:51:03It is a race that just continues to deliver the extraordinary.
00:51:09Let's listen to what's going on with Porsche.
00:51:11Michael, after the merging, after the drawback,
00:51:15I'm counting five cars ahead, which will be in the leading lap.
00:51:18So that will be your target to overtake, to put us back in the lead lap position,
00:51:25should we have another safety car.
00:51:26My memory of the Royal Front Centre Racing days, Martin, was a number of things.
00:51:33One, exceptional ambition with you, the Royal Band behind you.
00:51:38Yeah, yeah.
00:51:38And some Royal sponsors as well, because that's what it takes.
00:51:41But also, there were a number of very talented drivers that likely we would not have seen the best of without Royal Centre Racing.
00:51:48But, you know, looking at Gio Balboza, who was around, but hadn't had the big break,
00:51:54and has gone on to fabulous success in IMSA Racing, and still, I know, loves you like a brother.
00:51:59Phil Keane on the national scene, another one that maybe didn't get his best shot for a variety of reasons,
00:52:05but he learnt a lot there.
00:52:06He did, yeah.
00:52:07And that was what it was like.
00:52:08There was always something different and something new.
00:52:12That must have been a hell of a whirlwind.
00:52:13It really was.
00:52:16Gio Al, we met through my, you know, Mosler manufacturing phase,
00:52:22and we never really realised how good we were until we did a race at Spa,
00:52:28and I thought I was the bee's knees in a Mosler, and in mixed conditions.
00:52:35And Gio Al never had a chance to show himself in all of testing and qualifying,
00:52:40and, because I helped the car, because, of course, because it was my car.
00:52:44And we got into the race, and I started the race, and, you know, did a double stint,
00:52:47came in, and, you know, touched my shoulders and thought, yeah, I did a good job there.
00:52:51Gio Al gets in, first flying lap, two seconds quick.
00:52:54I tell you what, I learned a lot that day.
00:52:58Let's look at what's going on in race control this later night.
00:53:02The freighter starts the process of merging this field and rearranging it into class order.
00:53:24This process all about making sure that when we go back to green,
00:53:29we try to avoid the yellow reeds, yellow, and we'll pick the bits out of that one post-race.
00:53:35I think so far it's been remarkably successful in that.
00:53:40Martin, should you be...
00:53:44Let's turn back the clock, 15, 20 years younger,
00:53:48and this opportunity in this field presents itself.
00:53:50Could it be WG?
00:53:51I think the money's enormous still, especially with the hybrid stuff going on.
00:53:59We had an amazing period where, you know, I went to Hugster Shornack
00:54:07and said, how much are you going to sell two dollars for, or one?
00:54:13And then it got to two, and it was £675,000 for two cars
00:54:18and four 20-foot containers of spares.
00:54:21So roughly what you'd pay now for an Oracle 07.
00:54:23Yeah.
00:54:24So we had two cars, and then I had to convince the ACO
00:54:29that a GT team doing British GT,
00:54:33that had only been doing it a couple of years,
00:54:35from doing TVR Tuscans prior to that,
00:54:38could compete.
00:54:40And the meeting with the ACO went,
00:54:43yes, Mr. Short, you've only been racing...
00:54:46Not that I've got a French accent.
00:54:48I won't do it.
00:54:48I thought it was Welsh.
00:54:51You know, you've only been racing GT cars.
00:54:53These cars are very dangerous.
00:54:55So I said, well, we'll do Zebring and see how we do.
00:54:59Well, with 10 hours into the race,
00:55:01it was Audi, Audi, Rolls Centre, Dallara, Audi,
00:55:06which was absolutely extraordinary.
00:55:08And at the end of that race,
00:55:09we ended up with a throttle breakage,
00:55:12and we finished fifth overall.
00:55:14But that was a hell of a feel.
00:55:15I remember distinctly Justin Wilson in that feel.
00:55:18He was a lovely guy.
00:55:20And after that race,
00:55:22the gentleman from the ACO wandered down,
00:55:24you know, through the pad that came up to us,
00:55:26shook my hand, gave me a Gaelic nod,
00:55:28and I was in.
00:55:30Fabulous.
00:55:30And that led to just, well,
00:55:32half a decade or more of adventure,
00:55:35I think is actually the right word.
00:55:36And that's what this is about.
00:55:38This is about aspiration.
00:55:39It is about passion.
00:55:40It is about adventure.
00:55:41And we thank you for all of that.
00:55:43So, you know, what did we have?
00:55:44We had fourth overall here in the Pesquilla 01.
00:55:47Sorry we've not got Henri here to remember that one.
00:55:50I did choke up a bit when I saw him on the phone
00:55:53on the presentation of the grid.
00:55:56That was wow.
00:55:58Yeah.
00:55:58And we had you leading that race
00:56:00in extraordinary circumstances
00:56:02in your beloved Galara.
00:56:04Yeah.
00:56:04And, you know,
00:56:06it's amazing
00:56:07that a team that we first saw in Tuscan Challenge,
00:56:11then coming forward with your own,
00:56:12built TBR Cerbera,
00:56:14still,
00:56:15I think that's the first car
00:56:17in what we now recognise as GTE,
00:56:20NGT, GT2,
00:56:21the first car other than a Porsche
00:56:23ever to win a race in that class.
00:56:27Well, we were the first car certainly to ever beat the Porsche.
00:56:31Yeah.
00:56:32It was, I think,
00:56:33your hand stuck in America
00:56:35in a BMW GTR,
00:56:37but it got disqualified.
00:56:38Oh, well, that doesn't count then.
00:56:39So it didn't count.
00:56:40And then at Spa we won.
00:56:43And then Porsche came out with the big guns
00:56:46with Marino,
00:56:47Frank Kitty,
00:56:48and Kelvin,
00:56:49Bert,
00:56:49and the adventure took off.
00:56:52And it's been an extraordinary adventure.
00:56:54And I was just really lucky enough
00:56:56to meet people,
00:56:58or have people contact me
00:56:59who loved my journey.
00:57:02And to be honest,
00:57:03most of them were TBR...
00:57:04Enthusiasts.
00:57:07Enthusiasts.
00:57:08They owned TBRs.
00:57:10And one of them
00:57:11worked for Deutsche Bank.
00:57:13And he had a TBR Cerbera.
00:57:16And I met him at Bedford Aerodrome
00:57:19on a track day,
00:57:21and he was literally wearing an anorak
00:57:23and a bobble hat
00:57:24in the portacabin.
00:57:26And you thought,
00:57:27that'll do.
00:57:27He just said,
00:57:29you're Martin,
00:57:30I've tried to get him some sponsorship.
00:57:32I'll go to Deutsche Bank.
00:57:34Would you like a passenger seat ride
00:57:36in a Cerbera?
00:57:38Yeah, that'd be great.
00:57:39Three laps.
00:57:39I didn't even take his phone number
00:57:41or anything.
00:57:42Shook hands.
00:57:43Six months later,
00:57:44we have our first outing
00:57:46with the TBR and British GT.
00:57:48And I get an email,
00:57:50would you like some sponsorship?
00:57:52And my jaw dropped
00:57:53and he said,
00:57:54what do you think?
00:57:55Where should we start?
00:57:56He said,
00:57:56how about 37 grand?
00:57:57Which was a weird number.
00:57:59And then two years later,
00:58:00he said,
00:58:01shall we do Le Mans?
00:58:02And I said,
00:58:03what,
00:58:03in a Ferrari or Porsche

00:59:42sitting on a tall stool,
00:59:43talking about three becoming one
00:59:45and maybe singing that way.
00:59:46However,
00:59:47the cars are in a queue.
00:59:48The pass around now involves
00:59:51any car in any of our three classes
00:59:54that is in the queue
00:59:56ahead of its class leader.
