00:00:00...supposed to look, look. So the race start will be investigated by the stewards.
00:00:04They get into the wet now as they come off Tertrourouche, onto the first part of the Mulsanne straight.
00:00:09And Anthony Davidson, this is where the potential danger is. It is very wet here. They are on slick tyres.
00:00:15Well, we saw what happened into the first chicane. Let's see into this one.
00:00:18It is treacherous, like you say, Martin. And already the 75 going wide again.
00:00:23I think that's the same car, Felipe Nasser, that ran into the side, the left rear of one of the Toyotas.
00:00:28And cars going off the track, left, right, centre here.
00:00:31Yeah, a 4 on the 63, take to the infield. Oh, one into the barrier there.
00:00:33It's a 3-11 into the barrier on the exit of the first chicane.
00:00:36That's the Action Express Cadillac. And he is right in the middle of the field.
00:00:40He's got no steering, or he's got no bodywork. He has a low left front corner.
00:00:45Now he's going to try and drag that back to the pits.
00:00:48Jack Aitken.
00:00:49One chicane in, Jack Aitken caught out and in the barriers.
00:00:53He will try and drag that back to the pits because who knows what else might happen in this race.
00:00:58Well, we called it, even before the start of the race, that that first chicane was going to be a little bit treacherous.
00:01:03And on the exit, just losing at that 3-1-1. What do you say, Martin?
00:01:07We need to see what happens to the 51 Ferrari. That's gone from second to fourth.
00:01:10He's been jumped by the two Toyotas.
00:01:12Nick Nielsen still leads in the 50 car, but Toyota number eight in second.
00:01:16Sebastian Bremi, teammate Mike Conway in the other red and white Toyota.
00:01:19That's in third place. There's the 51 Ferrari in fourth.
00:01:22And there is Jack Aitken, the British-Korean driver, trying to drag the car back to Action Express.
00:01:29All sorts of body bits will be required, but it's going to have to go back into the garage and have a new front end put on that car.
00:01:35Look how racy the Toyotas are looking at the start of this.
00:01:38Right up behind the car, 50 now, and breezing by into Indianapolis. That's a surprise.
00:01:45Yeah, huge, huge attack from Sebastian Bremi.
00:01:48There's his teammate Brendan Hartley and the rest of the garage applauding as Toyota retake the lead, or take the lead for the first time.
00:01:55It is Nick Nielsen in the number 50 car for Ferrari, who's now in second place.
00:02:01So a lead change already halfway round lap one of this race.
00:02:05Yeah, as we were focusing, of course, on the incident for Jack Aitken coming out the first chicane,
00:02:09it was the Toyota squaring up to the first of the two Ferraris coming into the second chicane.
00:02:14That's where the first move made. We've just seen the second.
00:02:18And that's Lee Toto pulling away.
00:02:21Now, Ferrari has been very quick in race trim in free practice.
00:02:24It was very quick as well in qualifying trim, in qualifying.
00:02:28So what has changed here? Is it the conditions?
00:02:31Is it something about the attitude of the Toyota drivers?
00:02:34I'm going to take this by the scruff of the neck on lap one and drag it out to the finish in 24 hours.
00:02:40There's a long way to go. A lot of racing.
00:02:43The safety car is out.
00:02:45And that's possibly not because of the slow-moving Action Express caddy,
00:02:48but the debris field that he left behind at the first chicane.
00:02:51And potential damage to the barrier as well,
00:02:53which needs to bunch the cars up to allow a big enough gap for Marshalls to be on the circuit,
00:02:59and recovery vehicles as well to do their thing.
00:03:02Now, question here.
00:03:03The Glickenhaus that starts from the pit lane should join in at the end of lap one.
00:03:09But, ah, there's another problem.
00:03:10The Inter-Europole 32 car, and is that at the second chicane?
00:03:14That's Marshall Post 11.
00:03:15First chicane.
00:03:16OK.
00:03:16So, Mark Vam in some trouble there.
00:03:19Jack Aitken still bringing this car back at pace,
00:03:21despite the fact that he's just got three wheels on the wagon, effectively, here.
00:03:24But in a hurry to get back to pit lane.
00:03:27I've got to say, that looks like it's built like an Audi, doesn't it?
00:03:30This is on board with Jack Aitken.
00:03:31Do you want to take us through this, Anne?
00:03:32Yeah, so the first ride, we knew it was wet.
00:03:35Stay off the curbs.
00:03:36A little bit of oversteer there.
00:03:37Through that next left, the caddy getting sideways.
00:03:39The sister car, and on power, the rear just snaps.
00:03:43He catches it.
00:03:44Equivalent, the high side of the motorbike goes the other way.
00:03:47We advised we have a lot of debris on track.
00:03:50After the first chicane, we have some cars to pick up.
00:03:56Sorry, Graham.
00:03:57It's so easily done as a driver there.
00:03:58You're getting on power.
00:03:59You've got cold ties.
00:04:00So you just had that slow warm-up lap, and we all saw it beforehand.
00:04:04Here's the 32.
00:04:06Snapped away from him in the chicane, just ahead of the NASCAR there.
00:04:10And powerless, really, at that point.
00:04:12Again, just that shot looks like it's in the video game,
00:04:15where somebody's just gone, I'm going to race a NASCAR in this one.
00:04:18But that is genuinely part of the race.
00:04:20It looks very different from everything else.
00:04:22Yeah, a little bit like one of those lockdown videos from Tom Aaron.
00:04:26Tom, I know you're here on the place here.
00:04:28The PR man from Brands Hatch.
00:04:31But great work by Jack Aitken to get back to the pit lane so quickly.
00:04:35Now, in the end, this will now be about making sure the car finishes the race.
00:04:39I mean, right from lap one, their battle plan has changed.
00:04:43Fix the car.
00:04:44Get it back out on track.
00:04:46Try and make the flag.
00:04:47Because they know, with a field this competitive, they're unlikely to be a contender.
00:04:52But that was their battle plan all along.
00:04:54They would have had it in their debriefs before the race even took place,
00:04:58saying, our strength has to be reliability, getting this car home.
00:05:02If we get through unscathed, we're guaranteed a podium.
00:05:05It's always the way it is when you're not in the fastest car.
00:05:07And they haven't been since the first laps we saw here.
00:05:11So I know it's easy to say sitting here, but it's a game of survival when it's wet like that in the first chicane.
00:05:18But it was just getting on power.
00:05:20Maybe it didn't have the TC quite turned up.
00:05:22The traction control turned up enough.
00:05:24And a little bit of a bump as well, slightly offline.
00:05:28He had the other car to the right-hand side, the number three car.
00:05:32And maybe giving that car space meant he was offline and around it went.
00:05:36I'd really like to see another view of it, just to see if there was even a tiniest bit of contact from behind.
00:05:41It did look like the car just spun up, but you can never quite be certain.
00:05:45And here's the 32 car being removed from the gravel at the chicane.
00:05:49That's at the first chicane.
00:05:50Safety car has now picked up the leader.
00:05:53We have three safety cars here, and all three are on track.
00:05:58They have all been scrambled.
00:06:00I'm not going to say we're not going to have to go through the new procedure, which we'll have to explain at some point.
00:06:05There's no cars behind the second or third safety cars just now, but we do have a car on pit lane.
00:06:11Also, by the way, to catch up here, we'll come back to the safety car procedure.
00:06:14On track now is the 708 Glickenhaus.
00:06:17That one has joined in a lap late, and we'll see how that works out with this process.
00:06:22The inter-europort car now recovered to the racing surface, and making progress up the order are the cars that started late.
00:06:29Now, this is the perfect time, in fact, to talk about the safety car procedure,
00:06:33because we heard Jim Glickenhaus saying, with the new safety car rules, starting from the pit lane shouldn't be a problem.
00:06:40Okay, they're not going to get...
00:06:42Oh, hang on a minute.
00:06:43They might get a lap back.
00:06:43They will get a lap back on the very first lap of the race.
00:06:47Glickenhaus is at the back of the queue.
00:06:49So what happens with the new safety car rules?
00:06:51There are three safety cars.
00:06:52They're scrambled at the start line, at the first chicane on the Mulsanne straight, and at Mulsanne corner.
00:06:58And those are now all circulating at the same pace.
00:07:01Let's take a look at the start of the race again.
00:07:03I just want to watch out for this number 75 Porsche.
00:07:06He goes to the outside, has an almighty lock-up on the right front.
00:07:09Already looking very racy there, is Philippe Nasser.
00:07:14I think he really had to have a little stab on the brakes there.
00:07:16He did.
00:07:17This is where it went wrong, didn't it?
00:07:1951 Ferrari was not quick away.
00:07:23It's that right front again.
00:07:25I wonder if there was some kind of regen issue, and putting too much force going through the front right brake, but, yeah.
00:07:33Number six, Porsche got in very deep there alongside the number two caddy.
00:07:37The Peugeot coming, steaming over the runoff area on the outside.
00:07:42Go, go, go, yes!
00:07:44That was the number eight car, Sebastian Bremi, taking the lead.
00:07:47This is the moment that led, probably, to the safety car scrambling.
00:07:52The 32 car going off in the wet.
00:07:55One switch.
00:07:59Yeah, no sound of contact from behind.
00:08:02It just sounds like it just spun itself up there.
00:08:05And it was very subtle as well, wasn't it?
00:08:06It's almost like it wasn't under limited traction.
00:08:09It's just too quick for the corner.
00:08:11Kind of like the Antonio Fuoco incident in Spa, where, in a straight line, it just sort of got spat across the road.
00:08:18Now, let's talk about the safety car rules.
00:08:20So, three safety cars circulating.
00:08:22The entire queue is behind one car, but that's immaterial.
00:08:26Once the track is safe for racing again, the three safety car queues will merge.
00:08:32Safety car B and C will wave the field by, and once they're all in one long queue, then we get wave bys.
00:08:39So, if you're in a queue of safety car, imagine in the middle of the race, you're in a queue of safety cars.
00:08:44Your class leader is behind you.
00:08:47Yes.
00:08:47You get waved by to the tail of the queue, so you don't lose a lap behind the safety car because of the safety cars.
00:08:55Then, we will reposition all the cars so that all the hypercars that are in the race are ahead of all the LMP2 cars, then the garage 56, number 24 Camaro, and then all the GTE cars.
00:09:08So, that is the way it will work.
00:09:11Now, what Jim Glickenhaus was saying was that, you know, if we get into the queue, but if we're nearly in danger of losing another lap, if there's a safety car, we'll get that lap back, if you like.
00:09:21We won't lose it.
00:09:22Which is why I was asking where he is at the queue, because if it was at the back of the queue, he won't get it.
00:09:28He won't get it on this pass-around.
00:09:29Correct, but what he will be is a lot closer to the traffic.
00:09:32There is one other outstanding item here, which is what has happened to the 25 Aston Martin.
00:09:38Let's have a listen first, let's know what's going on with said Braymie in the brake car.
00:09:41We see from the Porsche onboard, it looks maybe that it hit more the side than the rear.
00:09:46It looks like the side of the left-hand rear.
00:09:50Okay, that is the secondary problem.
00:09:52The problem is I don't charge.
00:09:54It's not charging when I brake.
00:09:58I have no assistance.
00:10:00It's really hard to brake.
00:10:01I need to brake really hard.
00:10:03I have no assistance.
00:10:05The kilowatt don't go in negative.
00:10:06Yeah, copies that.
00:10:08We know we're on it.
00:10:10I'll get back to you when we have something, mate.
00:10:12Best to leave it to us.
00:10:14Well, that's a revelation, isn't it?
00:10:18And not a good one for Sebastien Buemi.
00:10:20Toyota already in trouble.
00:10:22He's saying basically on this fly-by-wire braking system, you usually have a lot of assistance from the brake pedal to help to regen.
00:10:30You can see the energy levels there on the left-hand side.
00:10:32Well, that's a combination of battery power and fuel use.
00:10:36So your total energy, they're obviously all up there at the moment in the 90s and the high 80%.
00:10:42But what he's saying is I'm having to physically press the brake pedal really hard.
00:10:46I've only got the mechanical brakes at this point.
00:10:49Now, it wouldn't be a problem at the moment because the state of charge of the battery is high because that's what it is at the start of the race.
00:10:55You charge the battery up.
00:10:57You have almost 100% SOC, they call it, state of charge.
00:11:01The problem will come if he's got no regen, then that energy level is going to go down and down much faster than anyone else.
00:11:0837 looks to be going in the garage here for the Cool Racing Squad.
00:11:1338, the Hertz Team Jodacar also on pit lane.
00:11:17There's a number of teams that take the opportunity to just top up with fuel.
00:11:19The other aspect, by the way, to this new safety car procedure is pit entry remains open until the merge process starts.
00:11:27The cars will be held at the end of pit lane until the next safety car passes.
00:11:32That will be safety car B, so anybody being released now will just lose position against the first safety car.
00:11:40But when the safety cars come, before safety cars come in, they will all be merged into the same queue.
00:11:47So this is free time.
00:11:48It's effectively free time to top up with fuel.
00:11:51As soon as merge starts, pit in closes.
00:11:54And a driver change.
00:11:55There was a driver change there as well after one lap.
00:11:57So all these cars in the queue here have to wait until the next safety car passes them, yeah.
00:12:02Well, there's barrier repairs underway, so there could well be a little bit of a delay here, I'm afraid.
00:12:07Is that what a freighter's there?
00:12:08At MP12, exiting the first chicane, everyone to bear totally right.
00:12:14Exiting the first chicane at MP12, everyone to bear totally to the right.
00:12:19I've got a lot of heavyweights on drivers left.
00:12:21That's a train of cars released behind safety car B.
00:12:25If you're wondering why it is that despite the fact there's only one safety car train, the other two cars were circulating, this is why.
00:12:33It's because this is part of the process.
00:12:35There will be a merging process.
00:12:36We will get to see that this early in the race.
00:12:39Slightly unwelcome.
00:12:40There goes the Goodyear airship, the Zeppelin.
00:12:41The main body, if you like, of the field behind the first safety car past the scene of the incident.
00:12:49Still not clear, by the way, what's happened.
00:12:53If anything, indeed, happened.
00:12:54I think it might have been a time.
00:12:55It is a timing glitch.
00:12:56We had a couple of those.
00:12:57The LRT by TF Aston Martin, that I was referring to, that started second in GTE-AM is actually third in the queue.
00:13:04It's a bright orange car.
00:13:06It's quite easy to see, but not by data.
00:13:09It keeps going from last back up to third.
00:13:11It's going to be a long one, or what do you think?
00:13:17Let's...
00:13:18I think longer.
00:13:21The repair seems big.
00:13:25Service vehicle on site now.
00:13:27Let's see if they don't do a slow zone after that.
00:13:31I think they're right.
00:13:33It's a longer...
00:13:34It's not a very, very quick fix.
00:13:36So I think we are going to see the entire new safety car process.
00:13:41Which means that as the pit lane remains open now, some cars may duck in and out.
00:13:48Now, the question for the number eight Toyota team, what they will be doing now is hacking through all of the data they're getting off the car to try and figure if there is something they can reset, if there's something in the menus at Sebastian where we can try and control or delete, reset, change or whatever.
00:14:07Part of their problem is that it's not charging up the batteries and the hybrid power.
00:14:14Although it's not used for a lot of the lap, probably no more than six or eight seconds in an entire three and a half minute lap, it is used and it is part of the power of the car.
00:14:25It doesn't add to the power of the car.
00:14:27It just takes the place of some of the internal combustion engine.
00:14:32But Anthony Davidson, the more significant factor, and we saw this in Portimao when the Ferrari lost brake by wire and they didn't get on top of it quickly enough, is that the brakes aren't built to stop the car on their own.
00:14:43And so imagine if you have two brakes on your bicycle and you're only ever using one, it's going to overheat because it's doing more work than it should do.
00:14:52And that's perhaps the larger problem immediately.
00:14:57Although the safety car will mitigate that because he's not using the brakes very much.
00:15:00That's absolutely right, Martin.
00:15:01And what they can do as well, they can do half throttle recovery as well.
00:15:05So when you're not on full power, you do get the recovery that way.
00:15:10It uses the internal combustion engine to charge the battery, it'd be like how a dynamo would.
00:15:15A marked hybrid on a road car.
00:15:16Exactly, exactly.
00:15:17So half throttle, you're getting all the recovery you need until the state of charge of the battery reaches a level that it's happy enough with.
00:15:24And then it does naturally hand over to the mechanical brakes.
00:15:27Trouble is, as soon as they're up to full speed, it's going to be doing that nonstop.
00:15:31And there's very limited room on this track to be carrying half throttle everywhere.
00:15:35The point of a racing car is to be flat out for as often as possible.
00:15:40Again, behind the safety car, you can't utilize that because you're on the speed limiter and it is fixed at a maximum of 80 kmh.
00:15:48So the engine will be fixed at a certain RPM.
00:15:51So it doesn't exceed that.
00:15:52You can choose within the car to make it charge under the safety car as well.
00:15:56Because obviously under the safety car, you're not, basically the full course yellow limiter at 60 kmh is doing that job for, sorry, 80 kmh is doing that job for you.
00:16:07It's limiting.
00:16:08So the electronics hands over to the electronic motor to slow the car down.
00:16:13And even though the throttle of the car is being told to go to 100%, the e-motor is slowing you down so you don't go flat out.
00:16:22Another thing I would like to see introduced is enormous A, B and C on safety car roofs.
00:16:29We just saw a shot of a little safety car queue.
00:16:31That safety car B, those were the cars that ducked in and out of the pit lane.
00:16:34And again, Anthony, let's listen.
00:16:40To be fair, you know, Jack, he was being cautious.
00:16:44He really was.
00:16:45He's just this unfortunate position.
00:16:47He had his teammate alongside.
00:16:47He knew the slippery and greasy and he wasn't like, it was just.
00:16:52I was waiting for the, like you say, that high slip, the spike of the traction control not being there for him and just letting the revs fly up.
00:17:03But that didn't happen.
00:17:04He wasn't doing anything, in my opinion, irresponsible.
00:17:07It was just a racing car and slick tires on a wet track.
00:17:11So, yeah, your heart goes out to him.
00:17:14Well, there he is.
00:17:16Jack Aitken.
00:17:17Could have been anyone, mate.
00:17:18Could have been anyone.
00:17:19I can't see anything he did.
00:17:21So here's the heli shot.
00:17:22And I'm trying to see where the Cadillac is here.
00:17:24I know the Toyota fight is interesting.
00:17:26The two Peugeots nearly take it.
00:17:27That's where it happened.
00:17:28That's where the pass happened out of the first chicane.
00:17:33They just had better traction there.
00:17:36Well, we saw this in Spa, didn't we?
00:17:37We did.
00:17:38They just didn't have the warm-up capabilities of the Toyota.
00:17:40They couldn't start that race in slippery conditions on the slicks.
00:17:44The Toyotas did.
00:17:44And we saw their first, or one of their first stints on the slicks being painfully slow compared to the Toyota.
00:17:51That was the pass to the equal down towards Indianapolis.
00:17:53And it was one of the things that Toyota seemed to be a little bit unhappy with, with the tweak of regulations coming into this race, allowing tyre blankets back.
00:18:04That hasn't been part of the scene this year so far.
00:18:06And they said, all that work we've been doing with no tyre warmers, making sure we can switch our tyres on, being clever in the way that we do that, has totally been eradicated for this race.
00:18:16So they felt, like, a little bit hard done by, but you've got to be there when the regulations change.
00:18:22You know, it's the same for everyone, really.
00:18:23But that work, they felt they had an advantage on cooler tyres with no tyre blankets.
00:18:28Yeah, further gaggle of pit stops, including yet another, at least one more, driver change.
00:18:34That's Françoise Perraude.
00:18:35That is Françoise Perraude.
00:18:36Now, why are they putting their gentleman driver in?
00:18:38Because they can.
00:18:39Norman Nato started to negotiate the carnage of the first few laps.
00:18:45The start of Le Mans is never a place for the faint-hearted, Nancy.
00:18:48But now the safety car's out.
00:18:50Each driver has a minimum amount of time they must drive, a maximum when they're allowed to drive.
00:18:54He can't do all 24 hours.
00:18:55So they're putting in Françoise Perraude now so he can get himself up to speed in the safety car queue,
00:19:01get himself dialled in, and then start a decent long run.
00:19:04Maxime Martin back in the pits with the DKR Engineering No. 43 car.
00:19:08And this team making their debut appearance in the big race here.
00:19:12Looks like they've got more issues than they had second.
00:19:15No, no, they're not.
00:19:16They earned one last year through success of LMP3.
00:19:20And actually their history in LMP2 goes back way before into the old rule set
00:19:25where they raced a open-top Lola many years ago.
00:19:29But a well-known team in the industry.
00:19:32Kenny Jenglas, a member, commentating with Oliver Gavin for races prior.
00:19:36And he'd raced GT1 Corvettes with Kendi's team back in the day with DKR.
00:19:42Ironically, Jack Aikin's mistaken.
00:19:44Yeah, look, Alex, is that Alex Sims?
00:19:46It is Alex, yeah.
00:19:47Just saying probably what I've just said on air.
00:19:50Look, you know, it could have been me.
00:19:52It could have been anyone.
00:19:54I've heard it.
00:19:55I've seen it.
00:19:56You were just on the outside.
00:19:58The sister car had a moment in the left-hand part.
00:20:01You had a moment around the right-hand part.
00:20:02But unfortunately, the barrier was closer on that part of the track.
00:20:06We can go to car 37, Nico Lapierre.
00:20:16Okay.
00:20:17Even if only one of the Toyota pits, you pit.
00:20:21If one of the Toyota pits, you pit.
00:20:24Or if both, then you pit.
00:20:26Mixed message there has actually changed Collado's radio instead.
00:20:34And quite an insightful one as well.
00:20:38That could be an interesting game of bluff and double bluff, couldn't it?
00:20:41What this has done, gentlemen,
00:20:43is it's thrown mixed strategy into the mix immediately.
00:20:47So we're not going to be in a situation
00:20:49that we might be with a full green start of this race
00:20:52where you've got a predictable cycle
00:20:54for the whole field in each of these classes.
00:20:56because LMP2 and GTE-AM
00:20:59we've seen about half the grid for each of them
00:21:02already down pit lane.
00:21:04Well, people who don't regularly watch this,
00:21:06see inside there's a little thing there
00:21:08with a yellow safety car message in it.
00:21:10That's the driver's safety system.
00:21:12Every single car has one.
00:21:14It relays all the flag signals
00:21:16as the driver gets to them
00:21:17and messages from race control
00:21:19can be sent directly to that car too.
00:21:26Safety car remains out here at Le Mans
00:21:29in the centenary running.
00:21:30We are 22 minutes in
00:21:32and on lap one an incident for the Action Express Cadillac
00:21:36of Jack Aitken that clattered into the barriers
00:21:38and the number 32 LMP2 car from Inter Europol
00:21:42have brought out the safety car.
00:21:44A number of cars have gone in and out of the pit lane
00:21:47to fuel up and in a couple of cases make driver changes.
00:21:51And Davidson, people who are not used to endurance racing
00:21:55might be going,
00:21:56well, why are they stopping for petrol if they don't need any?
00:21:59I think American racing fans will always have the answer.
00:22:02Always take fuel when you can.
00:22:05You just want to try to split the strategies up.
00:22:08The unfortunate thing at Le Mans
00:22:09is that you do have the three safety cars,
00:22:12whether at some point they're going to merge or not
00:22:13is yet to be seen this time around.
00:22:16But it's a nice idea to,
00:22:18particularly for the LMP2 cars
00:22:20that have amateur drivers as well.
00:22:22I was just looking at a replay there
00:22:23of Jack Aitken going into the barrier
00:22:25on that first opening lap.
00:22:27Yeah, the outside view confirms
00:22:28there was nobody close behind him.
00:22:30So it wasn't contact
00:22:31either with the number three car alongside
00:22:33with the yellow nose or anybody else.
00:22:36I just feel it could have been avoided,
00:22:37all of this and all of this safety car period
00:22:40by seeing that it was wet there.
00:22:42They're all on slicks.
00:22:43I called it straight away
00:22:45as soon as I saw how treacherous it was.
00:22:46But I think it needs a driver
00:22:48and a current driver to be there
00:22:51helping out as well to say,
00:22:52look, this is the safest thing to do,
00:22:55to throw a full, not full course,
00:22:57a slow zone.
00:22:58We have the beauty of that
00:22:59in the World Endurance Championship
00:23:00and the circuit is split into many sectors
00:23:03to accommodate that, to allow for that.
00:23:06And I just feel like all of the drivers
00:23:08would have been in agreement
00:23:09with having that in place.
00:23:12For me, it was a no-brainer,
00:23:14the safest thing to do.
00:23:15But now it is what it is.
00:23:17We have a barrier repair going on
00:23:19and the car's out there
00:23:21eager to get going again.
00:23:24And the good thing is with the slow zone
00:23:26is that the race carries on
00:23:27once you've passed
00:23:28that period of slow speed.
00:23:33You can go to the car 94 Peugeot.
00:23:36Nico Muller.
00:23:36Nico, we would like you to box this lap
00:23:39in case pit entry is opened.
00:23:41If pit entry is closed, stay out.
00:23:44Copying.
00:23:45I will just follow the lights.
00:23:47If it's not on, I'm off.
00:23:49Correct.
00:23:50This will be fuel only.
00:23:51Copying.
00:23:53So again, taking the opportunity
00:23:55while the safety car remains out
00:23:57to top up with fuel.
00:23:58Prepare for merging.
00:24:00Pit entry is closed.
00:24:02Prepare for merging.
00:24:03Pit entry is closed.
00:24:05So now Nico Muller will get a message going
00:24:07do not box, do not box.
00:24:09Pit entry is closed.
00:24:10Now, in one of the three practice sessions
00:24:12the pit entry closed light
00:24:14was on for the entire session
00:24:16so that all the drivers
00:24:18would have a chance to see
00:24:19where it was,
00:24:20what it looked like
00:24:21and then they'd have no excuses
00:24:22if they came in while it was closed.
00:24:24So now we're going to see
00:24:25for the very first time
00:24:27all sorts of history gets made
00:24:29at this race.
00:24:30This is another little facet of it.
00:24:32The first time we will merge
00:24:33the three safety car queues.
00:24:35Now, safety car B has got a queue.
00:24:39Safety car C's queue
00:24:40has already been waived by
00:24:41so they're between the chicanes
00:24:43on the Mulsanne Strait
00:24:44ahead of the safety car
00:24:46that they were behind
00:24:47and safety car B
00:24:48has waived its cars by as well.
00:24:50It's pulling in
00:24:51on the exit of our Nage now
00:24:53as safety car C
00:24:56has pulled in
00:24:56at the first chicane
00:24:58so they will all join this long queue.
00:25:00Yeah, the differential between the cars
00:25:02whether you'll see on the B pillar of the car
00:25:03the A, B or the C
00:25:05you're absolutely right
00:25:06that's exactly what's going to happen.
00:25:08Safety car B
00:25:09needs to be more enormous
00:25:10for idiots with poor eyes like me.
00:25:12Safety car B has now indeed pulled in
00:25:14and just to explain
00:25:16when they say pits are closed
00:25:17while pits are open
00:25:19before the call to start the merge begins
00:25:22the exit light will be on
00:25:26until the next safety car passes by.
00:25:29You join the next available queue
00:25:30as soon as the pits are closed
00:25:32you will wait
00:25:33till the single safety car
00:25:35completes another lap.
00:25:36In other words
00:25:36you'll lose a lap.
00:25:37Yeah.
00:25:38Now I hope that everybody
00:25:39watching Trackside
00:25:40is either listening to Radio Le Mans
00:25:42on their radios
00:25:44or Chris McCarthy
00:25:45the English language commentator here
00:25:47who joins Bruno Vendistique
00:25:49and the rest of the French crew
00:25:50because otherwise
00:25:51they'll have no clue
00:25:53what is going on right now.
00:25:54Okay, everybody's behind the safety car
00:25:56those guys are overtaking the safety car
00:25:57that's not right
00:25:58you can't do it
00:25:59because this is brand new
00:26:00we haven't used it all year long
00:26:01in the World Endurance Championship
00:26:02we've never used it at Le Mans
00:26:04this is absolutely brand new
00:26:06so if people
00:26:07you know
00:26:08haven't been reading
00:26:08all their briefing notes
00:26:09for the drivers
00:26:10and they won't have
00:26:11because they're not drivers
00:26:12then this is going to be
00:26:14quite confusing.
00:26:15Hold on tight boys.
00:26:16Yeah, for all the traditionalists
00:26:19out there
00:26:19used to the three car
00:26:21safety car rule
00:26:22it would be very confusing
00:26:24if you're just sitting
00:26:24in the grandstand
00:26:25with no commentary
00:26:27to tap into
00:26:28but yeah
00:26:29I'm excited to see this
00:26:30apparently when they first
00:26:31tried this
00:26:31did they try the
00:26:33we tried it
00:26:33we were in Barcelona
00:26:34during the LMS race meeting
00:26:37and let's put it this way
00:26:39there were some directors notes
00:26:40that came out of that
00:26:41it's not simple
00:26:42I mean
00:26:42you're quite right Martin
00:26:44when you're used to doing something
00:26:45the same way over and over again
00:26:47however clear the instructions
00:26:49the new ones can be missed
00:26:50and the other thing is
00:26:51we're dealing with people
00:26:52mature enough
00:26:53in race control
00:26:54to understand that
00:26:55the way we thought
00:26:56it might happen
00:26:56might not be quite that easy
00:26:58and there are tweaks
00:26:59and there have been tweaks
00:27:00and the other thing is
00:27:01to make sure that
00:27:02everybody gets the message
00:27:03repeat the message
00:27:04it'd be really interesting
00:27:05actually to see
00:27:06on board
00:27:07what messages
00:27:08are coming through
00:27:09to the drivers
00:27:10in their safety systems
00:27:11full laps into
00:27:12the Michelin
00:27:13mediums
00:27:14on Nick Nielsen's car
00:27:15again
00:27:15I think pretty much
00:27:16everybody started on mediums
00:27:17at the moment
00:27:18it'll say safety car
00:27:19but I wonder if in a queue
00:27:21that's being
00:27:21passed around
00:27:22or waved by
00:27:24whether you get a message
00:27:25saying pass SC
00:27:26or something
00:27:26and then when you're
00:27:28in a queue here
00:27:29my understanding is
00:27:31the instruction goes
00:27:32to the team
00:27:32through the timing screens
00:27:34it's then for them
00:27:36to instruct their drivers
00:27:36appropriately
00:27:37the responsibility
00:27:38is entirely the team
00:27:40let's listen to what's
00:27:41going on with Toyota
00:27:41okay Seb
00:27:43I need a report
00:27:44on track condition
00:27:45again
00:27:45report on track condition
00:27:46yeah
00:27:49seems to be
00:27:50a lot drier
00:27:52still a bit damp
00:27:53in the first chicane
00:27:55the rest seems to be dry
00:27:57copy that
00:27:58and when you can
00:28:00again
00:28:00on throttle
00:28:01charging SOC
00:28:0355 target
00:28:04on a roll map
00:28:13now there are various
00:28:14you can see
00:28:15when you look
00:28:15inside the cockpit
00:28:16you see twiddly dials
00:28:17that's the technical term
00:28:18I think
00:28:19isn't it
00:28:19twiddly dials
00:28:20on the wheel
00:28:20and a roll map
00:28:21which is
00:28:21on the spokes
00:28:22normally you have
00:28:22a sort of rotating
00:28:23many of your road cars
00:28:24will have that
00:28:25to go from fuel consumption
00:28:27to how many miles
00:28:27you've done
00:28:28and whatever else
00:28:28convert to kilometres
00:28:29and that's the same
00:28:31sort of thing
00:28:31you'll often hear them
00:28:33giving them
00:28:33you know
00:28:34alpha 12
00:28:35beta something or other
00:28:36little commands
00:28:37to set traction control
00:28:38and fuel economy
00:28:39and so on
00:28:39but when you need
00:28:40to get deeper into it
00:28:41as he obviously does
00:28:42to try and sort out
00:28:43the braking issue
00:28:44and the harvesting
00:28:45of electricity issue
00:28:46then that's it
00:28:47in a sub menu
00:28:48that's not necessarily
00:28:49immediately there
00:28:50and it's good
00:28:51you know
00:28:52it's a luxury
00:28:52they've got this time
00:28:53to do it
00:28:53imagine if they didn't
00:28:54have the safety car
00:28:55they would have been
00:28:55really fighting fires
00:28:57real time
00:28:58at high speed
00:28:59and would have been
00:29:01losing time
00:29:01maybe even losing
00:29:02their brakes as well
00:29:04at points
00:29:04so very lucky
00:29:05LMP2
00:29:06now start the drop back
00:29:08and here comes
00:29:08the Camaro
00:29:10now then
00:29:13the Camaro
00:29:13is supposed to stop
00:29:15behind the LMP2
00:29:16it'll drop again
00:29:17okay
00:29:18so they will drop back
00:29:20the Camaro
00:29:21once this is complete
00:29:22this is
00:29:23now we didn't see
00:29:24the 75 car
00:29:25had been into the pit
00:29:26then
00:29:26we didn't document that
00:29:27that is now
00:29:28going to get to go
00:29:28by all of these cars
00:29:30and into the tail
00:29:31of the hypercar queue
00:29:33I think
00:29:3438 you mean
00:29:3538
00:29:3538
00:29:36sorry
00:29:37what did I say
00:29:3875
00:29:38yeah 38
00:29:39sorry
00:29:39so LMP2
00:29:40has dropped back
00:29:41to the back
00:29:41of the field
00:29:42okay
00:29:44then
00:29:45then the same
00:29:46will occur
00:29:46I believe
00:29:47we're then going to
00:29:47see the same
00:29:48happening
00:29:48with the NASCAR
00:29:49and then the
00:29:50GT
00:29:51the GTE
00:29:52AMS
00:29:52and you can see
00:29:53all the LMP2
00:29:54cars that have
00:29:54pitted
00:29:55going
00:29:55oh ah
00:29:56right
00:29:56I'm following
00:29:57that queue
00:29:57because you can
00:29:58clearly see
00:29:58from behind
00:29:59you may not
00:29:59know who it is
00:30:00but you know
00:30:01what it is
00:30:01right
00:30:01follow the LMP2
00:30:02queue
00:30:03right
00:30:03so they're
00:30:04all together
00:30:04they'll then
00:30:05drop back in here
00:30:06now the advantage
00:30:06of this
00:30:07in restarting
00:30:08a race
00:30:09is that you've
00:30:10effectively
00:30:10separated out
00:30:11the three races
00:30:12into cars
00:30:13of a generally
00:30:14applicable pace
00:30:16so it means
00:30:16that the madness
00:30:17that you sometimes
00:30:18see
00:30:19safety cars
00:30:20breeding safety cars
00:30:21should be
00:30:22less likely to happen
00:30:24yeah
00:30:25mitigated
00:30:25so
00:30:26that's the word
00:30:26I was searching for
00:30:27you're not starting
00:30:27the race leader
00:30:29behind 35 gentleman
00:30:31drivers in
00:30:31slower cars
00:30:33or even
00:30:34five gentleman
00:30:34drivers in slower cars
00:30:35so
00:30:35safer for everybody
00:30:37and less likelihood
00:30:39that safety cars
00:30:40will materially
00:30:42and majorly
00:30:43affect the actual
00:30:44race in the classes
00:30:45you're going to see
00:30:46the same
00:30:46car 24 now
00:30:48to do the drop back
00:30:48exactly as we just
00:30:49predicted
00:30:49what that means is
00:30:51you're not going to see
00:30:52the fabulous in-car shots
00:30:53of the likes of
00:30:54Fernando Alonso
00:30:55powering through
00:30:55loads of traffic
00:30:56yet
00:30:57well number one
00:30:58Fernando's not here
00:30:59but there were some
00:30:59epic in-car shots
00:31:01of that
00:31:02but what we will see
00:31:03in just a few laps
00:31:05time
00:31:05is them catching
00:31:06that train
00:31:07they'll still have
00:31:08traffic
00:31:08but it won't be
00:31:09quite as frenetic
00:31:10because they're in
00:31:11their own battle
00:31:12which they can
00:31:13control themselves
00:31:13rather than the
00:31:14urgency to get
00:31:15through that traffic
00:31:16to keep with the queue
00:31:17now as well as
00:31:18testing this out
00:31:19for real
00:31:20in the European
00:31:21Le Mans series
00:31:21in Barcelona
00:31:22what other things
00:31:24do teams do
00:31:24to test things
00:31:25when they're not
00:31:26on a real racetrack
00:31:27they go to the
00:31:28sorry I was looking
00:31:30at something else
00:31:30as well as testing
00:31:31this system
00:31:32in real life
00:31:33in Barcelona
00:31:33they go to the
00:31:34simulator
00:31:34and what do we now
00:31:35have in Le Mans
00:31:36racing
00:31:37simulators
00:31:39the virtual
00:31:40virtual Le Mans
00:31:41virtual Le Mans
00:31:42drivers
00:31:43have done
00:31:44several races
00:31:45rehearsing this
00:31:46with the race
00:31:47controller
00:31:47with race director
00:31:48Eduardo Freitas
00:31:49so as well as
00:31:50the teams
00:31:51preparing for this
00:31:52on the sim
00:31:52race director
00:31:54has prepared
00:31:54for this on the sim
00:31:55as well
00:31:55using some of the
00:31:57teams and drivers
00:31:57from the Le Mans
00:31:59virtual series
00:31:59going to be said
00:32:00very effective
00:32:02doing this very
00:32:03quickly
00:32:03so we've had
00:32:04two of the
00:32:04pass around
00:32:05sorry the merge
00:32:06parts of this
00:32:07or the pass around
00:32:07parts of it
00:32:08within a single
00:32:09lap
00:32:09and I think
00:32:09we're going to
00:32:09get close to
00:32:10getting the third
00:32:11done
00:32:11because the 24
00:32:12car is now
00:32:14getting towards
00:32:15the position
00:32:15it needs to be
00:32:16and then we'll
00:32:17carry on through
00:32:18with the GTA
00:32:19once the field
00:32:20is under control
00:32:21once it's in the
00:32:22correct order
00:32:23we can go back
00:32:24to green flag running
00:32:25so most of
00:32:27the time
00:32:28on the safety
00:32:28car has been
00:32:29for the incident
00:32:31to be dealt
00:32:32with
00:32:32once race direction
00:32:34are happy
00:32:35that that incident
00:32:36site is safe
00:32:37they'll then go
00:32:38through the process
00:32:38we've just seen
00:32:39one question
00:32:41why wouldn't they
00:32:42drop back the
00:32:43GT cars first
00:32:44why have they
00:32:44done it
00:32:45the LMP2 cars
00:32:46and then the
00:32:46GT cars
00:32:47let me think
00:32:49that one through
00:32:50for a moment
00:32:50there must be
00:32:51a reason
00:32:52but I can't
00:32:52think of it
00:32:53at the moment
00:32:54other than the
00:32:54fact what you've
00:32:55seen there
00:32:56is you've had
00:32:57a mixed batch
00:32:58of cars
00:32:58pitting LMP2
00:33:00and GT cars
00:33:01it does help
00:33:02to sort that
00:33:03it does help
00:33:06to sort that
00:33:07so that actually
00:33:08what we're seeing
00:33:08is cars
00:33:09coming forward
00:33:10into that queue
00:33:11both in pace
00:33:12order as well
00:33:13as class order
00:33:14I still don't
00:33:16understand the
00:33:16answer to your
00:33:16question
00:33:17because the
00:33:18next move
00:33:19I'm sure we're
00:33:20going to see
00:33:20is the GT
00:33:21cars drop back
00:33:22and that relieves
00:33:23the number 38
00:33:24Jota
00:33:25to join
00:33:25the back
00:33:26of the hypercars
00:33:26thinking it through
00:33:27the answer is
00:33:28if for whatever
00:33:29reason including
00:33:29an early pit stop
00:33:30you've got an
00:33:31LMP2 car
00:33:32in the middle
00:33:32of the GTE cars
00:33:33that sorts that
00:33:34first
00:33:34they'll then cycle
00:33:36back forward
00:33:37in front of the
00:33:37GTE cars
00:33:38so the 43 car
00:33:40for instance
00:33:41is at a race
00:33:41with the LMP2
00:33:42cars
00:33:42it's in the middle
00:33:43of the GT
00:33:44AM cars
00:33:44this helps
00:33:45towards the LMP2
00:33:47field
00:33:47first
00:33:48and then you
00:33:49do the same
00:33:49with GTE
00:33:50naturally
00:33:51because there's
00:33:51no other cars
00:33:52and they mix
00:33:52for them
00:33:53yeah
00:33:53and of course
00:33:57once we get
00:33:58into real life
00:33:59racing
00:34:00where the first
00:34:01car in the queue
00:34:01is the first
00:34:03car that the
00:34:03safety car
00:34:04picks up
00:34:04because you
00:34:05want to
00:34:05neutralize
00:34:05the race
00:34:06instantly
00:34:06it's not
00:34:07necessarily
00:34:07a hypercar
00:34:08or the hypercar
00:34:09leader
00:34:10or the race
00:34:10leader
00:34:11yeah
00:34:11so all of that
00:34:12gets taken
00:34:12into consideration
00:34:13as well
00:34:13what we're
00:34:14seeing here
00:34:14is that
00:34:16the hypercar
00:34:18was taken
00:34:19up first
00:34:19the race
00:34:20leader
00:34:20was taken
00:34:21up first
00:34:21let's catch
00:34:22up with
00:34:23the Jota
00:34:23team
00:34:24Louise Beckett
00:34:24down in the pit
00:34:25lane
00:34:25I'm with
00:34:26Will Stevens
00:34:27from Hertz
00:34:28team Jota
00:34:29number 38
00:34:30now we've got
00:34:31a new safety
00:34:31car procedure
00:34:32it wasn't
00:34:32great for you
00:34:33guys having
00:34:33to start
00:34:34at the back
00:34:34of the grid
00:34:35what happens
00:34:36now
00:34:37that's what
00:34:37everyone's asking
00:34:38yeah so basically
00:34:40obviously us
00:34:41starting at the
00:34:41back of the grid
00:34:42this couldn't
00:34:44have been a
00:34:44more perfect
00:34:45time for us
00:34:45to have the
00:34:46safety car
00:34:46because the
00:34:46new procedure
00:34:47basically means
00:34:48that once
00:34:49they've done
00:34:50all their
00:34:50pass around
00:34:50on the
00:34:51dropbacks
00:34:51they'll be
00:34:52class by
00:34:53class
00:34:53so now
00:34:54we've
00:34:54all the way
00:34:55back up
00:34:55to all the
00:34:55hypercars
00:34:56and we'll
00:34:56basically be
00:34:57at the back
00:34:57of the
00:34:58hypercar
00:34:59class
00:34:59so if we
00:35:01were to
00:35:01create the
00:35:02perfect scenario
00:35:03then we've
00:35:04had the
00:35:04perfect first
00:35:0540 minutes
00:35:05to the race
00:35:05so now
00:35:06we're fully
00:35:06back in
00:35:07the race
00:35:07right behind
00:35:08the hypercar
00:35:09so now
00:35:09it's game
00:35:10on
00:35:10and we can
00:35:10get back
00:35:11to what
00:35:11good stuff
00:35:13thank you
00:35:13thanks
00:35:13and a very
00:35:14telling point
00:35:15just made
00:35:15in my
00:35:16offer
00:35:17by
00:35:17and
00:35:18that is
00:35:19that they've
00:35:20also been
00:35:21able to top
00:35:21up with fuel
00:35:22as well
00:35:22in that 38
00:35:23so it's an
00:35:24absolute
00:35:24win-win
00:35:25and a brilliant
00:35:26bit of strategy
00:35:26it's the right
00:35:27thing to do
00:35:27if you're way
00:35:28behind the
00:35:29hypercars
00:35:30you're not going
00:35:30to lose
00:35:30nothing to lose
00:35:31at all
00:35:31and it's been
00:35:32an absolute
00:35:33net gain for
00:35:33them
00:35:33and the minute
00:35:34the safety car
00:35:35came out
00:35:35fuel fuel fuel
00:35:36get it
00:35:36been
00:35:36some drivers
00:35:37have changed
00:35:38and what I
00:35:39speculated about
00:35:40when we saw
00:35:40Francois
00:35:41Parodi
00:35:41getting in
00:35:42Ike Lapierre
00:35:43has confirmed
00:35:43exactly the same
00:35:44that they have
00:35:45also had a pro
00:35:47driver start the
00:35:47race and try and
00:35:48keep the car in one
00:35:49piece and the
00:35:50moment a safety car
00:35:51came out
00:35:51okay great
00:35:52let's get our
00:35:53am driver in
00:35:54let's get a lower
00:35:54rated driver in
00:35:55let's get them
00:35:56in the car
00:35:57in the race
00:35:58just you know
00:35:58alive in this
00:35:59but start them off
00:36:00behind the safety car
00:36:01and nothing to lose
00:36:03what that also means
00:36:05gentlemen is we are
00:36:06highly likely
00:36:07if we don't get
00:36:08dramas when this
00:36:09race goes back to
00:36:10green within the
00:36:12next hour or so
00:36:13that Hertz Team
00:36:14Jota will lead
00:36:14this race
00:36:15also we have been
00:36:17told on their
00:36:18media channel
00:36:20that there is
00:36:21absolutely no problem
00:36:22at all with the
00:36:22number 8 Toyota
00:36:23it was just said
00:36:26worried about
00:36:26settings behind the
00:36:28safety car
00:36:28so all that talk
00:36:30about being hit on
00:36:31the side and
00:36:32doesn't look like
00:36:32there's much damage
00:36:33and what map
00:36:34is it in
00:36:34absolute standard
00:36:36stuff
00:36:36so as ever
00:36:38there's been
00:36:38a discreet veil
00:36:41drawn over
00:36:42anything that
00:36:43might be of
00:36:43any interest
00:36:44whatsoever to
00:36:45anybody
00:36:45by the Toyota
00:36:46team
00:36:46but this is
00:36:47you know
00:36:47racing driver's
00:36:48mind when you're
00:36:49in the lead
00:36:49as well
00:36:49he's very
00:36:51experienced
00:36:51and he's just
00:36:52flagging up
00:36:52potential
00:36:53it's better to
00:36:54do that
00:36:54what's the next
00:36:55thing that could
00:36:56go wrong
00:36:56that's always the
00:36:57question you have
00:36:58to ask
00:36:58damage on the
00:36:59rear of the
00:37:00that is 63
00:37:01I think
00:37:01there is
00:37:02Dorian Pat
00:37:02that car's
00:37:03been hit
00:37:03or has had
00:37:04some kind of
00:37:05contact at the
00:37:06rear
00:37:06and that is
00:37:08the light in
00:37:10the gality
00:37:10panel
00:37:10and I think
00:37:11that's going to
00:37:12need to be
00:37:12fixed
00:37:12they will
00:37:12probably get
00:37:13they will
00:37:15probably be
00:37:16allowed to
00:37:16fix it at
00:37:17the next stop
00:37:18safety car will
00:37:18come in at
00:37:19the end of
00:37:19this lap
00:37:20safety car will
00:37:21come in at
00:37:22the end of
00:37:22this lap
00:37:2240 minutes ago
00:37:24I stood up to
00:37:25start the race
00:37:26I'm going to
00:37:26stand up to
00:37:27start the race
00:37:27as we didn't
00:37:29get we only got
00:37:29one corner
00:37:30off three or
00:37:30four
00:37:31so we are
00:37:32getting ready
00:37:32to go back
00:37:33to green flag
00:37:34racing and
00:37:34that means
00:37:35that the
00:37:35safety car
00:37:36driver will
00:37:37race away
00:37:38ahead of
00:37:39field
00:37:39Pedro Cacero
00:37:40well the
00:37:41great thing
00:37:41is we
00:37:41haven't had
00:37:42to explain
00:37:42how the
00:37:43safety car
00:37:43is going
00:37:43to work
00:37:44we've now
00:37:45seen it
00:37:46what other
00:37:47new rules
00:37:47that might
00:37:48be applicable
00:37:48in the next
00:37:49two minutes
00:37:50that was
00:37:50pretty orderly
00:37:51that was
00:37:51pretty orderly
00:37:52and with
00:37:53the incident
00:37:54cleared by the
00:37:54way done
00:37:55very quickly
00:37:56yes
00:37:56now there was
00:37:57two things
00:37:57about that
00:37:58first of all
00:37:58it was bone
00:37:59dry and
00:38:00broad daylight
00:38:01so everybody
00:38:01got to do
00:38:02it while they
00:38:03could see it
00:38:03and secondly
00:38:05it's also
00:38:06given them
00:38:06half an hour
00:38:07for that wet
00:38:07first chicane
00:38:08to dry up a bit
00:38:09Ant
00:38:09it has
00:38:10I mean
00:38:10it's a bonus
00:38:11for that
00:38:12but what
00:38:13you're going to
00:38:13see is that
00:38:14safety car
00:38:14will naturally
00:38:15only really
00:38:16come out
00:38:16when you've
00:38:17got a barrier
00:38:18repair
00:38:18going on
00:38:19they're not
00:38:20just going to
00:38:21throw it
00:38:21at any time
00:38:22please remind
00:38:25drivers
00:38:25no overtaking
00:38:27before the line
00:38:27no overtaking
00:38:29before the line
00:38:30and again
00:38:31that's a different
00:38:32rule in the
00:38:33IMSA WeatherTech
00:38:34series
00:38:34when the track
00:38:35goes green
00:38:35it's green
00:38:36everywhere
00:38:37in FIA rules
00:38:38and here at
00:38:38Le Mans
00:38:39you can only
00:38:40pass when you
00:38:40start the green
00:38:41lap
00:38:42it's not green
00:38:42here
00:38:43it will only
00:38:43be green
00:38:44once you
00:38:44get past
00:38:45the line
00:38:45so that's
00:38:46a very
00:38:46different deal
00:38:47and a different
00:38:48deal as well
00:38:49in that you
00:38:49don't have to
00:38:50stay with a
00:38:50certain length
00:38:51of the safety
00:38:51car
00:38:52you can let
00:38:53that go
00:38:53it peels
00:38:54off
00:38:54and it's
00:38:55the leader
00:38:55that now
00:38:56dictates
00:38:57the pace
00:38:57so the entire
00:38:59hyper car
00:38:59field is
00:39:00nose to tail
00:39:00barring the
00:39:01lapped
00:39:02Glickenhaus
00:39:02it's on the
00:39:03back of the
00:39:03queue
00:39:04but it is
00:39:04the lap
00:39:04behind
00:39:05then all
00:39:05the LMP2s
00:39:06then all
00:39:06the GTE
00:39:07AMs
00:39:07race leader
00:39:08Sebastian
00:39:09Guemi
00:39:09brings us
00:39:10back to green
00:39:10ahead of
00:39:11Nick Nielsen
00:39:11Mike Conway
00:39:13Toyota's
00:39:14James Collado
00:39:15in the second
00:39:16all red Ferrari
00:39:16Felipe Nasser
00:39:18in the Porsche
00:39:18number 75
00:39:19not staying
00:39:21right with the
00:39:21leaders at the
00:39:22restart
00:39:22well he nearly
00:39:23was in amongst
00:39:24them as he
00:39:25outbraked himself
00:39:25at the first
00:39:26time of asking
00:39:27the Dunlop
00:39:28curve
00:39:28they all get
00:39:29safely through
00:39:30this time
00:39:30the bill were
00:39:30a little more
00:39:31strung out
00:39:32Anthony Davidson
00:39:33than they were
00:39:33at the first
00:39:34start so hopefully
00:39:35there should be
00:39:35no repetition
00:39:36of the bumping
00:39:37and boring
00:39:37at the start
00:39:38of this 24 hour
00:39:39race
00:39:39absolutely
00:39:40I think they
00:39:40were much calmer
00:39:41this second time
00:39:42around
00:39:43it's almost like
00:39:43you need to get
00:39:44the first one
00:39:44out the way
00:39:45and reset
00:39:45but yeah
00:39:46all cleanly
00:39:47through as you
00:39:48say
00:39:48Mike Conway
00:39:49was putting
00:39:50immense pressure
00:39:51on the Ferrari
00:39:52in front of him
00:39:52through that
00:39:53the end of the
00:39:54first sector
00:39:54but now Nick
00:39:55Nielsen's managed
00:39:56to get a little
00:39:57bit of a breather
00:39:57and it's Mike
00:39:58that comes under
00:39:58the attack
00:39:59from James Collado
00:40:00in the slipstream
00:40:01as they head down
00:40:02towards turn one
00:40:03what's the
00:40:04dampness situation
00:40:05going to be
00:40:06this time around
00:40:06side by side
00:40:07with the Porsches
00:40:08in the back
00:40:08against one of the
00:40:09Peugeots
00:40:09I'm going to mark
00:40:10one piece
00:40:10of Le Mans history
00:40:11fastest lap
00:40:12of the race
00:40:13as we go back
00:40:14to green
00:40:15is the NASCAR
00:40:164 minutes
00:40:17and 57 seconds
00:40:190.906
00:40:20it won't stay
00:40:21for much more
00:40:21than another
00:40:22lap or so
00:40:23but it's a nice
00:40:24to have
00:40:24and that's by the way
00:40:25slightly better news
00:40:26for Jim France
00:40:28than what he's got
00:40:28happening on pit lane
00:40:29at the moment
00:40:30so here we go
00:40:31side by side
00:40:32battle
00:40:32two Ferraris
00:40:3321 car
00:40:34with the yellow
00:40:35highlights
00:40:35and the red
00:40:36livery
00:40:36and then
00:40:37the JMW
00:40:38Ferrari
00:40:38and coming down
00:40:39the inside
00:40:39steaming down
00:40:40the inside
00:40:41comes one of the
00:40:42Dempsey Proton
00:40:43Proton Racing
00:40:44Porsches
00:40:44they're running
00:40:44four different cars
00:40:46with nearly
00:40:47identical liveries
00:40:48that is Harry Tingle
00:40:50in the number
00:40:5088 car
00:40:51the teal
00:40:52dazzle
00:40:53livery car
00:40:54past the
00:40:55veteran
00:40:55number 66
00:40:56the 7 years
00:40:58here at Le Mans
00:40:58number 66
00:41:00JMW
00:41:01Ferrari 488
00:41:03Tower Motorsport
00:41:04didn't get a lap
00:41:05in qualifying
00:41:06they're involved
00:41:06in a clash
00:41:07with a 777
00:41:08D station
00:41:09racing car
00:41:09their race
00:41:10is not getting
00:41:11much better
00:41:11they've been given
00:41:12a three minute
00:41:15stop and go
00:41:15penalty
00:41:16because of that
00:41:17incident in
00:41:17free practice
00:41:18one
00:41:18that will now
00:41:19need to be served
00:41:19now the race
00:41:20has gone back
00:41:21to green
00:41:21and here comes
00:41:22the second
00:41:23Toyota game
00:41:24Mike Conway
00:41:24hovering up behind
00:41:26Nick Nielsen
00:41:27and exactly as
00:41:28Sebastian Bremi
00:41:28did
00:41:29going by
00:41:30in a straight
00:41:30line
00:41:31so
00:41:31the
00:41:32Ferraris
00:41:33look like
00:41:34they had
00:41:34good top speed
00:41:35in free
00:41:36practice
00:41:36the Toyotas
00:41:37look like
00:41:38they've got
00:41:38very good
00:41:39top speed
00:41:39in the race
00:41:40Toyota
00:41:40back to
00:41:411-2
00:41:42after the
00:41:43first half
00:41:44lap of
00:41:44lap of
00:41:44lap of
00:41:44racing
00:41:44from
00:41:45safety
00:41:45car
00:41:46it's
00:41:46interesting
00:41:46speaking to
00:41:47Kevin
00:41:47Esther
00:41:47on the
00:41:48grid
00:41:48and in
00:41:49the number
00:41:49six
00:41:50Porsche
00:41:51Penske
00:41:52Porsche
00:41:52and he
00:41:52was saying
00:41:53yeah you know
00:41:54we're quick in the
00:41:54Porsche curves
00:41:55but the straight line
00:41:57speed of some of the
00:41:58others
00:41:58and he made
00:41:59particularly the
00:42:00Ferraris
00:42:01we can't quite match
00:42:02but you've just seen there
00:42:04the Toyotas blasting past
00:42:06and we haven't seen that
00:42:07all week so far
00:42:0975 car being warned about
00:42:12its earlier contact
00:42:13it does look as though
00:42:15the 51 Ferrari
00:42:16the car in fourth place
00:42:17James Collado
00:42:18might be looking to get by
00:42:20Niklas Nilsson
00:42:21in the 50 car
00:42:22the first
00:42:22those two red cars
00:42:23with the yellow stripes
00:42:24then the rainbow colours
00:42:26that's the first of the Porsches
00:42:27that's car number 75
00:42:28that's fifth place
00:42:29Felipe Nasser
00:42:30the blue nose
00:42:31black tailed caddy
00:42:32that's number two
00:42:33Earl Bamba
00:42:34then two more
00:42:35of the Porsches
00:42:36those are both
00:42:37the Porsche
00:42:37Penske
00:42:38Motorsport cars
00:42:39Christensen
00:42:40in the five
00:42:40and the six
00:42:41Lawrence Vantor
00:42:42we just saw going by
00:42:43the Peugeot
00:42:43of Paul de Resta
00:42:44about halfway around
00:42:46the lap
00:42:46so Peugeot
00:42:47moving up
00:42:47Porsche moving up
00:42:49Cadillac at the moment
00:42:50sort of a little bit
00:42:51in stasis
00:42:52not going anywhere fast
00:42:54with the number two car
00:42:55and I think he's going
00:42:56to come under attack
00:42:57Earl Bamba
00:42:57in the next couple of laps
00:42:58it's just a
00:42:59it's a warning flag
00:43:00it's going to go to 75
00:43:01for Felipe Nasser's
00:43:02contact to the side
00:43:03of Seb Poemi
00:43:04at the start of the race
00:43:05so no further penalty
00:43:06for that
00:43:07we heard Seb talking
00:43:08in the car
00:43:09about potential issues
00:43:11arising from that
00:43:12but no sign
00:43:13that's an issue
00:43:14at the moment
00:43:14race director
00:43:16has said
00:43:16that the 63
00:43:17Premo Motorsport car
00:43:19that was trailing
00:43:19that bit of bodywork
00:43:20will need to repair it
00:43:22at the next pit stop
00:43:23that will be just
00:43:24the tail end
00:43:25of the car removed
00:43:25it will be a few seconds
00:43:27longer on pit road
00:43:28but it's not
00:43:28a big repair
00:43:29Lauren Pantor
00:43:30looking pretty racy
00:43:31in the number six
00:43:32Porsche here
00:43:33pulls out
00:43:33to go side by side
00:43:35with the number five
00:43:36of Michael Christensen
00:43:38Christensen
00:43:40not really keen
00:43:41on giving this one
00:43:41away
00:43:42meanwhile
00:43:42the Ferrari
00:43:43coming back
00:43:44this is
00:43:44Niklas Nilsson
00:43:45the 50 car
00:43:46having a look
00:43:47for second place
00:43:48but through goes
00:43:49Laurence Pantor
00:43:49and again now
00:43:50Christensen
00:43:51under pressure
00:43:51because here's
00:43:52the Peugeot
00:43:52right behind
00:43:53of Scotsman
00:43:54Paul de Resta
00:43:54he's got
00:43:55Nico Muller
00:43:55behind him
00:43:56then the yellow
00:43:57nose caddy
00:43:57that's the number
00:43:58three car
00:43:58of Sebastien
00:43:59Bordet
00:43:59here comes
00:44:00the Peugeot
00:44:00yeah
00:44:01I think
00:44:02that Christensen
00:44:02could have been
00:44:03a little more elegant
00:44:04in the way
00:44:04that he let his
00:44:05team mate
00:44:05pass there
00:44:06into that first chicane
00:44:07he kind of
00:44:07fought it too long
00:44:08got on the slippery
00:44:09stuff
00:44:10and now is potentially
00:44:11going to lose
00:44:12a position to
00:44:12de Resta
00:44:13but it looks like
00:44:13he's just got
00:44:14the straight line
00:44:15speed to hang
00:44:15on to it
00:44:16to the second one
00:44:16even Stevens
00:44:17even Stevens
00:44:18in terms of
00:44:19straight line
00:44:19speed there
00:44:20there wasn't
00:44:20a fascinating
00:44:21moment
00:44:22to see the
00:44:22comparison
00:44:23performance
00:44:23between these
00:44:24two very
00:44:25very different
00:44:26cars
00:44:26and it's that
00:44:26difference
00:44:27that this new
00:44:28class is bringing
00:44:29to this field
00:44:30and look how close
00:44:31they are
00:44:31what sort of
00:44:32half think about
00:44:33a pass
00:44:34that didn't happen
00:44:35and suddenly
00:44:35the two point
00:44:36shows have got
00:44:36the caddy
00:44:37of Sebastian Bordet
00:44:38with that yellow
00:44:39nose all over
00:44:40the back of them
00:44:41and again
00:44:41at 50 Ferrari
00:44:43Nick Nielsen
00:44:43sort of had a bit
00:44:44of a kind of
00:44:45a little look
00:44:46at Mike Conway
00:44:46it didn't happen
00:44:48but he was offline
00:44:49and he's lost
00:44:49you know
00:44:50half a second
00:44:50to three quarters
00:44:51of a second
00:44:52dropped three or four
00:44:53car lengths
00:44:54further back
00:44:54and this is
00:44:55this is why
00:44:55this pass
00:44:56is going to be
00:44:56so fascinating
00:44:58because there's
00:44:59the cars
00:45:00are all totally
00:45:01different
00:45:01and yet
00:45:01they're so similar
00:45:02in the performance
00:45:03window
00:45:04Collardo's having
00:45:04a look
00:45:05he's having a look
00:45:05at Nielsen
00:45:06on the inside
00:45:06of Indianapolis
00:45:07but thinks better
00:45:08of it
00:45:08and I think
00:45:09there must be
00:45:10a headwind
00:45:10at that part
00:45:11of the track
00:45:11because he got
00:45:12a pretty decent
00:45:12run out of
00:45:13Mulsang Corner
00:45:14and then before
00:45:15they got to
00:45:15Indianapolis
00:45:16he was right
00:45:17there
00:45:17behind his
00:45:18team mate
00:45:19so I think
00:45:19that headwind
00:45:20helps to aid
00:45:21the slipstream
00:45:22well his team mate
00:45:23Nick Nielsen
00:45:23in the first of
00:45:24Ferrari's
00:45:24is getting a little
00:45:25toe off
00:45:26the Toyota
00:45:27in front
00:45:27and of course
00:45:28Collardo's getting
00:45:29a double toe
00:45:29because he's getting
00:45:30a bit of a tear
00:45:30off both cars
00:45:32in front
00:45:32so he's going
00:45:33even quicker
00:45:33in the clear air
00:45:34and again
00:45:34he's looking
00:45:35once more
00:45:36Collardo's not happy
00:45:37as he's flashing
00:45:38the headlights
00:45:39at his team mate
00:45:39we've heard him
00:45:40get pretty feisty
00:45:41in Portimao
00:45:42I think it was
00:45:44fighting Nielsen
00:45:44as well
00:45:45back then
00:45:45as well
00:45:46wasn't it
00:45:46come to think
00:45:47of it
00:45:47so no love
00:45:48is lost
00:45:49between these
00:45:49two
00:45:50and I'm sure
00:45:51no better place
00:45:52to prove
00:45:53who's the fastest
00:45:54driver within
00:45:54your team
00:45:55once and for
00:45:56all
00:45:56this big race
00:45:57well one of the
00:45:57bits of perspective
00:45:58you've brought
00:45:59to the WEC
00:46:00coverage
00:46:00every race
00:46:01and is
00:46:01the fact
00:46:02that it's not
00:46:03been a formation
00:46:04race for the
00:46:06Totas
00:46:06when they've
00:46:06had limited
00:46:07opposition
00:46:08and it certainly
00:46:09isn't the case
00:46:10for Ferrari
00:46:10where you've got
00:46:11an awful lot
00:46:12of players here
00:46:13with a lot of
00:46:14pressure on them
00:46:15with this historic
00:46:16new programme
00:46:16and you certainly
00:46:18sense don't you
00:46:18they're looking to
00:46:19see where they are
00:46:20in the pecking order
00:46:21it's probably worth
00:46:22if I was
00:46:23in charge at Ferrari
00:46:25it's probably worth
00:46:26just having a look
00:46:27to see what speed
00:46:27Collardo's got
00:46:28you could swap
00:46:29them back afterwards
00:46:30obviously the race
00:46:31is long
00:46:31but you don't want
00:46:32to be wasting time
00:46:33at any opportunity
00:46:34look at Buemi
00:46:35making a break
00:46:36for it out in front
00:46:37just see what
00:46:38your other driver
00:46:39can do
00:46:39and Graeme
00:46:40that takes us
00:46:41to Toyota's rule
00:46:42if you get on
00:46:43the radio
00:46:43and whistle up
00:46:44the team
00:46:44and say
00:46:44I'm quicker
00:46:45they will wave
00:46:46you by
00:46:46and you've got
00:46:47two laps
00:46:47to clear off
00:46:48and if you don't
00:46:49back in the queue
00:46:50it's a great
00:46:51discipline
00:46:51by the way
00:46:52change in the order
00:46:53for hypercar
00:46:54and that's a position
00:46:54gained by
00:46:55Hertz Team Jota
00:46:56we said this cycle
00:46:57back round
00:46:58thanks to that
00:46:59strategic call
00:47:00to bring the car in
00:47:01up to 13th position
00:47:02ahead of the number
00:47:03number four
00:47:04Floyd Van Walker
00:47:05top deal man
00:47:05and Antonio
00:47:06Phoenix Da Costa
00:47:07now right on the rear
00:47:08of Frank Mayer
00:47:09in the lead
00:47:10of the two
00:47:11Clickenhouse
00:47:11here comes the number
00:47:13two Cadillac
00:47:14that's the blue nose
00:47:15of Earl Bamber
00:47:15looking up behind
00:47:16the second of those
00:47:17three Porsches
00:47:18Porsche currently running
00:47:20fifth, sixth and eighth
00:47:22and the Caddy
00:47:22having a snare foot
00:47:23the tail of
00:47:24Lawrence Van Tor
00:47:25he had got
00:47:27a backer actually
00:47:27Michael Christensen
00:47:28he had got ahead
00:47:29of Christensen
00:47:30Christensen's got back
00:47:31past him
00:47:31and now Bamber
00:47:33dropping back
00:47:33into the clutches
00:47:34the 75 car
00:47:35Clado's coming
00:47:36his teammates
00:47:37even thinking
00:47:37about defending
00:47:38there
00:47:38oh don't do that
00:47:40come on guys
00:47:41Matty Pregliasco
00:47:44the team manager
00:47:45needs to make sure
00:47:46that the drivers
00:47:46are working together
00:47:48you can't fight
00:47:49each other
00:47:50yes you can't win
00:47:51the race
00:47:51unless you beat
00:47:52your teammate
00:47:52but all six drivers
00:47:54and everyone
00:47:55in the crew
00:47:56want Ferrari
00:47:57to win Le Mans
00:47:58that's what
00:47:59this is all about
00:48:00Ferrari wins Le Mans
00:48:01is the only headline
00:48:03that anybody cares
00:48:04about
00:48:04counting full green
00:48:05flag laps
00:48:06now 15 minutes
00:48:07into this race
00:48:08the top 13 cars
00:48:10separated by 9.2
00:48:12seconds
00:48:12this is what
00:48:14we wanted
00:48:14this is what
00:48:15it's beginning
00:48:15to deliver
00:48:16it's going to get
00:48:17better still
00:48:18Ferrari looks like
00:48:19it's just starting
00:48:20to switch on
00:48:20those tyres
00:48:22those Michelin
00:48:22medium tyres
00:48:23coming into it
00:48:24now
00:48:25now what's Nielsen
00:48:26going to do
00:48:26he's pretty close
00:48:27to Conway
00:48:27he's in the slipstream
00:48:28but don't think
00:48:29he's going to be able
00:48:29to attack him
00:48:30into that corner
00:48:31but Collado to me
00:48:33looks like he's
00:48:34slightly got an advantage
00:48:35over his teammate
00:48:36and it's now
00:48:38is the time
00:48:38if the team
00:48:39aren't going to
00:48:39help you out
00:48:40now's not the time
00:48:41to have a hot head
00:48:42you know
00:48:43you've got to keep
00:48:44reminding yourself
00:48:45what a long way
00:48:46there is to go
00:48:47and anything can happen
00:48:48now's not the time
00:48:49to start damaging
00:48:50your car
00:48:51so if the team
00:48:52don't make
00:48:54the change happen
00:48:55you go to plan B
00:48:56which is to set back
00:48:58sit in the slipstream
00:48:59let your engine
00:49:00do less
00:49:01save fuel
00:49:03now
00:49:03talking about
00:49:04Hertz Team Jota
00:49:05they've already
00:49:06topped up
00:49:06and they're still
00:49:07on the lead lap
00:49:08they're still
00:49:08in the lead queue
00:49:09and that means
00:49:11they will go out
00:49:12they will already
00:49:13be racing longer
00:49:14when everybody else
00:49:15comes into the game
00:49:16they will lead
00:49:17if this stays green
00:49:18they will lead
00:49:19if this stays green
00:49:20extraordinary vision
00:49:21for a team
00:49:22first time in the top class
00:49:23we know I've got the R
00:49:24you know
00:49:25more than anybody
00:49:26I've got the R
00:49:27and Davidson
00:49:27able to give you
00:49:28everything you need
00:49:29in terms of information
00:49:30guidance
00:49:31and strategy
00:49:32and that's a cracking call
00:49:34from Hertz Team Jota
00:49:35and it's exactly
00:49:36what the Americans
00:49:37were doing racing
00:49:38every opportunity
00:49:39there's only two rules
00:49:40in American racing
00:49:41track position
00:49:42take fuel
00:49:43at every opportunity
00:49:45and if you haven't got
00:49:45track position
00:49:46take fuel
00:49:47make it work for you
00:49:48and Will Stevens
00:49:50said
00:49:50this is the most
00:49:52perfect start to the race
00:49:53you could have
00:49:53for a car that started
00:49:54on the back of the grid
00:49:55and he was absolutely right
00:49:56they could not have paid
00:49:57enough money
00:49:59to get that safety car
00:50:00in Lapwad
00:50:01it really helped them
00:50:02except for they
00:50:02on pit lane
00:50:03the number three Cadillac
00:50:04now that's
00:50:06that early
00:50:08that has to be a problem
00:50:09it must be early
00:50:10if they've been
00:50:11over 35 minutes
00:50:12behind the safety car
00:50:13well if we'd been
00:50:14green from the start
00:50:16he would still be going
00:50:17in three laps
00:50:18at least early
00:50:18because they should do
00:50:19at least a dozen laps
00:50:20oh three-way battle
00:50:22in GTE
00:50:22Valkenhors going
00:50:24by the Iron Dames
00:50:26Toyota is on soft
00:50:27they will struggle
00:50:28with tires
00:50:28start to put some
00:50:29pressure on them
00:50:30we want to put some
00:50:31pressure on Toyota
00:50:32they are on soft
00:50:32they start to struggle
00:50:33I think we
00:50:34I think we might need
00:50:38to double check that
00:50:39when we looked at
00:50:40pictures of the car
00:50:41on the grid
00:50:41I'm sure we saw
00:50:42M on the side
00:50:43of the Michelin
00:50:44now because they're
00:50:45rotating at speed
00:50:46it's hard to tell
00:50:47we don't have
00:50:47full coloured sidewalls
00:50:49we do have
00:50:49a little coloured tab
00:50:51on them
00:50:51but there's the graphic
00:50:53he's absolutely right
00:50:54the number two
00:50:55second place
00:50:56number seven
00:50:57Toyota
00:50:57is on soft tires
00:50:58and
00:50:59really?
00:51:01well I mean
00:51:02maybe Toyota
00:51:02decided to do
00:51:03what they did in Spa
00:51:04start on the soft tyre
00:51:06when there's wet
00:51:07on the track
00:51:07but he's under
00:51:08massive pressure
00:51:09now with Mike Conway
00:51:09so it all completely
00:51:10makes sense
00:51:11that that's why
00:51:12the Ferrari's
00:51:12look stronger
00:51:13Mike hanging on in there
00:51:17I thought he was just
00:51:18going to let him
00:51:19slip past
00:51:19but I mean
00:51:20this is the point
00:51:21of the race
00:51:21where Mike's
00:51:22got to get his
00:51:22elbows out
00:51:23and put a halt
00:51:24to that Ferrari's
00:51:25pace
00:51:25now their medium
00:51:26tyres have switched
00:51:27on
00:51:28but how long
00:51:28is the soft
00:51:29going to last
00:51:29we know from Michelin
00:51:30here we go
00:51:31both Ferrari's
00:51:32looking to go by
00:51:32in the same move
00:51:33versus Nick Nielsen
00:51:35then James Collado
00:51:36we know from Michelin
00:51:37they expect the medium
00:51:38to at least triple stint
00:51:40very likely quad stint
00:51:42so they're probably
00:51:43going to be on these
00:51:43till sort of 7 in the evening
00:51:45Alpha 6 11
00:51:47Alpha 6 11
00:51:48Seb is looking
00:51:49after the tyres
00:51:50you're doing a good job
00:51:51that I'm guessing
00:51:54is just keeping back
00:51:56and he's not managed
00:51:56to do that
00:51:57through goes
00:51:57Nick Nielsen
00:51:58into second place
00:51:59young Danish driver
00:52:00who's won a title
00:52:02with either or
00:52:03AF Corsa
00:52:04and Ferrari
00:52:05every year
00:52:06since 2018
00:52:07that Toyota's got
00:52:08a lot of top line
00:52:09speed on the street
00:52:10isn't it
00:52:10so far
00:52:11he was really
00:52:12fighting for that
00:52:13wasn't he
00:52:13what he was trying
00:52:14to do
00:52:14was be smart
00:52:15and stick behind
00:52:16Nielsen
00:52:16to put himself
00:52:17at less of an attack
00:52:19from the threatening
00:52:20Ferrari behind
00:52:21so he played that
00:52:22pretty cleverly
00:52:23but they're fighting
00:52:24a losing battle here
00:52:25if they're the only ones
00:52:25on a soft tyre
00:52:26they're going to start
00:52:28falling further
00:52:29and further behind
00:52:30and Seb doing the best
00:52:31he can
00:52:31to preserve those softs
00:52:33look at the queue
00:52:34of traffic behind him
00:52:35it's like Seb's
00:52:35well
00:52:36now that Seb's gone
00:52:38it's like Mike Conway
00:52:38is towing a caravan
00:52:39he's just got a long queue
00:52:40of cars behind
00:52:41I mean it's not
00:52:42that slow
00:52:43but everybody
00:52:43is now bunched up
00:52:44they have dropped
00:52:45the Porsches
00:52:46the Porsches
00:52:46are all now
00:52:47running line astern
00:52:485th, 6th and 7th
00:52:49they've got a head
00:52:50of the caddy
00:52:50of Earl Bamba
00:52:51then the two Peugeots
00:52:53then Hurst Team Jota
00:52:54I mean they're all
00:52:55queuing up
00:52:55to have a go
00:52:56and Seb Wemi
00:52:56is trying to race away
00:52:58hopefully he's cured
00:52:59his regen problems
00:53:01with that front axle
00:53:02and he's getting
00:53:03the full power
00:53:04otherwise he'll have
00:53:05to come into pits early
00:53:06split strategy
00:53:07from Ferrari
00:53:08did they set them off
00:53:09on not full tanks
00:53:11that's early
00:53:1310 laps
00:53:14we were expecting
00:53:1812 lap stints
00:53:19and they have been
00:53:20behind the safety car
00:53:21for half of those
00:53:2210 laps
00:53:23they're splitting the
00:53:23strategy come what may
00:53:25aren't they
00:53:25we heard remember
00:53:27the instruction
00:53:29to the Ferrari driver
00:53:30if the Toto pits
00:53:32you follow him
00:53:33didn't get to that point
00:53:35the 50 car comes in
00:53:37only fuel
00:53:43only fuel
00:53:44yeah that makes sense
00:53:47because on the medium
00:53:48tyre you only do the
00:53:48fuel
00:53:49you keep them going
00:53:49we're expecting
00:53:50they can comfortably
00:53:51the medium tyres
00:53:52do three stints
00:53:53but I'm still perplexed
00:53:55as to why they're in
00:53:56so early
00:53:57particularly under
00:53:58the safety car
00:53:59but don't forget
00:54:01it was that car
00:54:01that started on pole
00:54:03maybe they wanted
00:54:03to make sure
00:54:04that it had a chance
00:54:05of staying at the front
00:54:0751
00:54:07here comes James Collado
00:54:08this is for second place
00:54:10trying to get round
00:54:11the outside of the
00:54:12Toyota Mike Conwin
00:54:13if he opens the door
00:54:14the Porsche's coming in
00:54:15as well
00:54:16Felipe Nasser
00:54:16and behind him
00:54:18Lawrence Van Tour
00:54:19and behind him
00:54:19in the three identical
00:54:20Porsches
00:54:21Michael Christensen
00:54:22yeah Porsche right there
00:54:25and another Porsche
00:54:26absolutely flying
00:54:28at the moment
00:54:28the fastest lap
00:54:30of the race
00:54:30goes to the number 38
00:54:31car
00:54:32now into the top 10
00:54:33in the hands of
00:54:33Antonio Filius Dacosta
00:54:34they're going to
00:54:35not waiting for this
00:54:36to cycle back to them
00:54:37they're going for it
00:54:38right now
00:54:39last year when he was
00:54:40racing the 38 Jota
00:54:41in LMP2
00:54:42he was announced
00:54:43as a Porsche factory
00:54:45driver for their
00:54:46Formula E team
00:54:47now he's a Porsche
00:54:48hypercar driver
00:54:50we see you're doing
00:54:51a good job
00:54:51on tyre energy
00:54:52protecting the fronts
00:54:53more than bike
00:54:54in high speed
00:54:55good job mate
00:54:56can we get feedback
00:54:57on the tyres
00:54:58when you can
00:54:58what is Mike doing
00:55:03it's important
00:55:03to the reverse
00:55:04compared to me
00:55:05yeah such a calm
00:55:08head there
00:55:09for Sebastian
00:55:09Boemi
00:55:10unusually doing a good
00:55:11job looking after
00:55:12those tyres
00:55:12he knows exactly
00:55:13what he's doing
00:55:14he works obviously
00:55:15with the Red Bull
00:55:16racing team
00:55:17in Formula 1
00:55:17and it's all about
00:55:18tyre preservation
00:55:19in that category
00:55:20so he's using
00:55:21his experience
00:55:22wisely there
00:55:22to put himself
00:55:24in the best
00:55:24possible scenario
00:55:25on those socks
00:55:26well one of the
00:55:27things Mike's doing
00:55:28to keep his tyres
00:55:29alive is sit in
00:55:29the slipstream
00:55:30of the fastest
00:55:31Ferrari
00:55:31number 13
00:55:37Tower Motorsport
00:55:38LMP2 car
00:55:39has not done
00:55:40a stop and go
00:55:41penalty
00:55:42and has now
00:55:42been reported
00:55:43to the stewards
00:55:44and that may result
00:55:45in a black flag
00:55:46that is a major
00:55:47major failure
00:55:48look at the energy
00:55:49level
00:55:49it's just below
00:55:50about the halfway
00:55:51mark in the
00:55:52number 7 Toyota
00:55:53again you can see
00:55:55full throttle
00:55:55being applied here
00:55:56drivers are very
00:55:58rarely on anything
00:55:59other than full
00:56:00throttle or full
00:56:00brake and he's
00:56:01sitting in the
00:56:02slipstream now
00:56:02behind the 51
00:56:03Ferrari of James
00:56:04Collado who's
00:56:05in second place
00:56:06Porsche's queuing
00:56:07up behind
00:56:08then the Caddy
00:56:08the Peugeot
00:56:09they're all in
00:56:09the tow
00:56:10and the leaders
00:56:11are from second
00:56:13down there is
00:56:14not more than
00:56:15about six tenths
00:56:16between any of
00:56:16these cars
00:56:17what am I missing
00:56:18here that I don't
00:56:18understand why
00:56:19they pitted that
00:56:19car I don't
00:56:20understand why
00:56:21fuel I could
00:56:22understand if we
00:56:22were within a lap
00:56:23or so of the
00:56:24fuel window but
00:56:25we weren't they
00:56:26are splitting the
00:56:27strategy for some
00:56:28reason we do not
00:56:29understand and
00:56:30they're splitting it
00:56:31by a very long
00:56:32margin yeah they
00:56:32really are because
00:56:33you could see
00:56:34everybody else had
00:56:35sort of about 40%
00:56:37of the energy left
00:56:38Anthony which means
00:56:39that actually not
00:56:40only is this not
00:56:41going to be a 12
00:56:41lap stint which we
00:56:43would have had
00:56:43probably under green
00:56:44of course there's a
00:56:46lap to get to the
00:56:47grid so normally
00:56:48your first stint is
00:56:49at least a lap
00:56:50shy of what a
00:56:51normal race stint
00:56:52would be but he's
00:56:54done six green
00:56:55flags laps rather
00:56:56than 12 and that
00:56:57seems yeah strange
00:56:59doesn't make sense
00:57:00is it I mean they
00:57:01must be sticking to
00:57:02their strategy some
00:57:03kind of a strategy
00:57:04splitting the two
00:57:04cars perhaps in terms
00:57:06of strategy it didn't
00:57:07seem like there's
00:57:08any problem with the
00:57:09car the fuel just
00:57:10went in normally but
00:57:12we all saw the
00:57:12graphics when it came
00:57:13up the energy graphic
00:57:15like I said Martin
00:57:16all around the 38 to
00:57:1840% mark so why
00:57:20would you hit when
00:57:21you've got still
00:57:22a plenty you know
00:57:23plenty of energy
00:57:24still remaining
00:57:25two reasons it's
00:57:27not about the fuel
00:57:27there was something
00:57:29else and the other
00:57:30reason I don't know
00:57:32what that is it wasn't
00:57:34about the fuel
00:57:35because as you're
00:57:36saying unless there's
00:57:38a safety car now
00:57:39he's half a lap
00:57:40behind the leaders
00:57:41rather than three
00:57:43or four car lengths
00:57:44behind second place
00:57:45that it does seem
00:57:46that there must have
00:57:47been another reason
00:57:49the number three
00:57:50caddy of Sebastian
00:57:50Bourdieu is in very
00:57:51early as well
00:57:52to give an indication
00:57:53of how far out of
00:57:54their window they are
00:57:55we're now getting
00:57:56the cars that didn't
00:57:57stop under the safety
00:57:58car from LMP2
00:57:59stopping and we know
00:58:00they on a regular
00:58:02WC circuit could do
00:58:03about 40 42 minutes
00:58:04the hybrid cars go
00:58:06further always do
00:58:07they're way outside
00:58:09their window
00:58:09yeah I'm not sure
00:58:12what was going on
00:58:12that the only
00:58:13information we'll get
00:58:14Ferrari was the
00:58:14standard stop for
00:58:15fuel but
00:58:16wasn't standard
00:58:18we are one hour
00:58:23into the 24 hours
00:58:24of Le Mans
00:58:25we've broken the
00:58:25back of this thing
00:58:26boys we're pretty
00:58:27much there now
00:58:28an hour in
00:58:29we've already
00:58:29had our first
00:58:30safety car
00:58:30first view
00:58:32of the new rules
00:58:33here regarding
00:58:34the safety cars
00:58:35three become one
00:58:36and then we shuffle
00:58:37the field all right
00:58:38back into the
00:58:39we stack the jacks
00:58:40at the front
00:58:41and keep the loan
00:58:42cards at the back
00:58:43I thought you were
00:58:43talking about the
00:58:44Porsches there
00:58:44three become one
00:58:45because they couldn't
00:58:46get any closer
00:58:47could they
00:58:47they really have
00:58:48been and team
00:58:49formation sticking
00:58:50with them by the
00:58:50way is the lead
00:58:52the only undelayed
00:58:53of the Cadillacs
00:58:54a lot behind there
00:58:55that's team
00:58:55Jota getting back
00:58:57in the mix
00:58:57the two Peugeots
00:58:58are going in there
00:58:59way quicker than
00:59:00we've been expecting
00:59:01them at this point
00:59:02that's got to be
00:59:03good news for that
00:59:03programme
00:59:04and the two
00:59:04Glickenhaus
00:59:05is not out of
00:59:06this either
00:59:06yeah I mean we
00:59:07haven't given
00:59:08Paul de Resta
00:59:09or any of the
00:59:10Peugeot drivers
00:59:11much attention
00:59:12this year
00:59:13because it's mostly
00:59:13been revolving
00:59:14around their
00:59:15reliability or lack
00:59:16of but they've
00:59:17got to sing
00:59:18their praises
00:59:18both drivers
00:59:19doing a great
00:59:20job particularly
00:59:20Paul de Resta
00:59:21in P8 at the
00:59:23moment he's really
00:59:24not letting that
00:59:24gaggle of cars
00:59:25go in front of him
00:59:26just seven tenths
00:59:27behind the
00:59:28Cadillac
00:59:28of El Bamba
00:59:29yeah great stuff
00:59:30looking back down
00:59:31through the
00:59:32classes by the way
00:59:33in GTM
00:59:34and here's the
