00:00Car crime is at a record high across the UK there's a car stolen every four minutes
00:17leaving families feeling violated there's people in my house and more than likely they're not here
00:29for a good reason 50 seconds was enough time to reprogram that car so that they had control of
00:35it and we didn't but an army of investigators are fighting back the car is actually parked just
00:41there by fitting vehicles with high-tech trackers can't tell you what the devices look like or where
00:46we hide them so they can trace track it's a cat and mouse game now we just have to follow that
00:51signal and snatch them back from the crooks who took them there you go there we go got it before
00:55they're sold on or shipped overseas they're called organized crime groups for a reason
00:59they're organized they plan this stuff
01:01today the hunt for a stolen mg on the left down here far side leads to an illegal chop shop
01:18and a family car is stolen by ruthless thieves the guy on the bike showed me like this something like
01:30this little thing leaving them feeling vulnerable in their own home both gates used to be open whole
01:37day but now I'm really scared like if you see one door is always closed now former police officer Aaron
01:51Tolley is a director at tracking and investigations company w4g who recover an average of two million
01:58pounds worth of vehicles per month just heading to a location in South Leeds just off the motorway today
02:08Aaron searching for a white mg stolen during a spate of car thefts in Leeds this vehicle was stolen from the
02:16roadside quite close to the user's home address and there were also a number of other vehicles stolen in
02:23the proximity over that same weekend we've we've seen that on social media there was at least two
02:29other cars that are the same brands that were stolen the stolen white mg is fitted with a GPS tracking device
02:36we've had a look at the tracking data and the the last hit is at the location where we're going now
02:42according to the GPS signal the cars being taken to an industrial area between Leeds and Wakefield we've
02:52done some research on this location it's showing within a small storage container yards very close
02:58to the motorways in motorway network in Leeds it's actually an area that I know from my previous career
03:04in the police the location itself lends itself to to being out of the way from from prying eyes and that
03:11would be an area that would normally be used by criminals to hide what they're doing when they
03:16are illegally dismantling stolen vehicles Aaron pulls up outside the container yard he's joined
03:24by undercover agent Shaquille whose identity needs to be hidden I'm just in front of you here the two
03:32of them are now outside the container yard but the gates are locked and there are guard dogs inside
03:37yeah and then I think I can walk along the footpath and get a view oh hang on the gates opening mate
03:50I'm assuming he's seen me on the camera and he's just opened the gate all the dogs are locked away
03:56there's a truck coming up behind us that might be why the truck drives straight in Aaron and Shaq decide
04:07to follow on foot Shaq's wearing a body cam Aaron and Shaq are through the gates and inside the yard
04:23there are several container units now all they need to do is find the stolen car on the left down here far
04:32side Aaron opens the unit where he suspects the car is hidden there's someone in there that's my car
04:42inside there's a black mg that looks like it's about to be dismantled but there's no sign of the white mg
04:52they're looking for are they already too late we've gained access to the compound where our last ping
04:58of the tracker was from what we can see there's a number of the strip vehicles in there there's
05:04actually a whole vehicle which isn't the asset that we were looking for in the back end of it I can I
05:09can see another set of number plates on the floor so I think that's probably a stolen car as well that's
05:13been that's been nicked overnight maybe where's the white one where's the white one to deliver to a
05:22white one yesterday as well yeah where's the white one it's gone it's gone already yeah it sounds like
05:29bad news for Aaron's customer there's numerous parts scattered across the floor they all seem to
05:34be lined up relating to each vehicle so we've got a lot of white panels there the vehicle that we're
05:40looking for is white it's an mg their mg panels the likelihood is is that our cars being dismantled
05:44there's also an engine on the floor just as we walk into the compound and that's an mg engine as
05:49well which is a bit of a concern for us in terms of our our vehicle that we're looking for Aaron and
05:54Shaq suspect they've uncovered an illegal chop shop where stolen cars are being stripped for parts which
06:00are then sold on the black market that car only came in here this morning yeah Aaron calls for urgent
06:07police backup this guy's most likely a handler probably the person who's stripping them down
06:12so we're going to get the police involved get them here because obviously we've got a suspect on site
06:17so he needs dealing with properly and we'll just secure him until police arrive it's all right the police
06:24run the way down all right later is the suspect about to make a run for it sorry he's got in the car
06:33watch the game but not all stolen vehicles are destined to end up in one of the UK's backstreet
06:44chop shops organized crime gangs are stealing cars to order taking them off driveways and shipping them
06:52overseas many pass through the UK's largest container port Felixstowe and it's up to stolen vehicle examiner
07:01Adam Gibson and the analysis team to intercept them before they're exported a week ago they
07:09seized a box they received Intel about so the initial container was profiled through our profiling methods
07:17who identified a shipment who was suspicious of we've checked it and it turned out that four stolen cars
07:22inside so our suspicions were correct and this is another shipment connected to that so it's loaded the
07:28same load site and going to the same destination as Adam arrives at the port it's the moment of truth
07:34was there Intel correct
07:37so we've got a Toyota Hilux
07:46Lexus RX 450 and a Range Rover Velar hanging up above it so what they do now they'll put the car in and
07:58to get more cars in the container they'll then lift it up with a forklift truck and put one of these
08:01five-ton straps underneath the front and then they just wedge another one underneath and if it wasn't
08:06a pickup truck here they'd probably put two more in whereas when you start putting pickup trucks in
08:11because of the size of them you can't get as much in the box we generally get three maybe four cars per
08:15container this container was heading to the Middle East a common final destination for stolen
08:22vehicles out of UK ports the Navsis crew removed the Toyota Hilux which is clearly marked as a company
08:31vehicle the thieves have been particularly brazen to steal something that's so instantly recognizable
08:39but it is worth 40,000 pounds with this one they will have smashed that quarter light window which
08:47allows them access to the vehicle and then they will plug into the onboard diagnostics under the dash
08:51and they will take it from there so basically the electronic systems now can be compromised in
08:58certain ways with certain bits of kit you can buy on the dark web and that allows you to start the
09:05vehicle without having the proper key okay so they're gonna line them up here we'll go through
09:11and get the identity of it and get its true identity because I don't doubt that those number plates are
09:15correct but we'll see with the Lexus freed from the container it's got no bonnet on it the final car
09:26is left suspended in midair this is a Range Rover Velar and basically like I said they've ratcheted it
09:33put it up on a forklift then put the straps under it hold it up and then they wedge another one
09:37underneath just ultimately you get as much in the box as possible Adam needs to verify the true
09:45identity of each car they've all come out with number plates on those number plates are false criminals use
09:52them to get away from the scene so they'll put them on when they steal it and then they drive away from
09:57the scene that they won't be the genuine plates I've now got a look at the the true VIN identifying
10:02markers on the vehicle and establish what the actual vehicles identity is using the VIN number Adam does an
10:10HPI check on the history of the Toyota Hilux he confirms it's a brand new vehicle stolen less than a
10:17month ago so this first one here is a stolen car from the Met on the 13th of October and it's a 24
10:27plate like brand new Hilux the strapped-up Range Rover is safely extracted from the container this has
10:38even got a key with it it's been supplied obviously in the container with the key sometimes the criminals
10:42will make keys up so they haven't had a key when they've taken it they've paired a key to it post
10:48theft makes it obviously the sell-on better because you've got it running driving off a key that is
10:53not a genuine Range Rover key if you look at it all intents and purposes it looks very much like one
10:59but that is a fake key I'm not sure if it will it might even start to be honest can I have a look
11:12there you go running driving having done a security check Adam discovers the Range Rover's origins that's
11:21the true identity the vehicle is a 2020 vehicle and it's coming back as stolen just over three weeks ago in
11:28London the victim might say that they don't want it back a lot of people feel very violated when
11:34their cars are stolen it's second probably to burglary where somebody's coming to invaded your space
11:39basically especially with the car key burglaries where they come in and they're stealing cars by
11:45taking the keys and they're coming in your house to get the keys then they feel doubly violated then
11:49for the organized crime gangs these luxury cars are a lucrative business you're looking here at
11:57cars probably worth about 30,000 pounds in its current age so street value on that probably for five
12:06grand something like that so the actual person stealing it it costs the containers three or four
12:12thousand pounds to ship it so the criminals have got factor that in they've obviously had to pay a
12:16gang who have gone and stolen these cars or they've got people working for their outfits stealing the
12:22cars to supply the cars and then obviously they're worth more at the other end a lot of these cars are
12:27worth a premium in some of the countries they're in compared to the UK value anyway we're pulling
12:33boxes on a daily basis between our ports sometimes two even three containers in the day so if anything
12:42it's just keeping up with the paperwork Adam and his team are always delighted when they can reunite owners
12:53with their cars one person whose car was found in a container is Aina Sati Kundra who had her Lexus RX 240
13:01stolen from outside her home in South Woodford London an incident that still haunts her
13:07it was a Diwali season and it was 30th October that day next day it was 31st October that was Halloween and Diwali both on the same day
13:18Aina was at home with her father-in-law it was 8 30 in the evening and her husband Tej was due back any
13:28minute she kept checking her video doorbell app to see if he'd pulled into the driveway
13:33suddenly there was an alert and I thought okay my husband's there on the driveway
13:39they went to the kitchen and I was going up and I was like oh he's not in yet where is he I mean I was
13:46looking for him then I thought okay he's still on driveway maybe Aina went to find out what was keeping him
13:53I just opened the door and I was like oh and I saw some guy there was someone on the driveway getting
14:04into her father-in-law's car there's a sensor light here and it was on him he saw me even I saw him at
14:12the eye contact between both of us then I was like ah that's not age then Aina noticed a second man
14:20barely visible standing by the gate she'll never forget what happened next when I shouted like hey
14:28like that like oh what's going on the guy on the bike showed me like this something like this metal
14:35thing I don't know what was that Aina was terrified frightened for her own safety and that of her family
14:42I'm not sure was it a gun or some something metal in his hand was there and because it was just
14:50dark and because he was outside there's no like streetlight on him nothing so I couldn't see
14:57properly but yeah both of them were dressed black top to bottom and so it's scary before she could
15:10raise the alarm the first man drove off in her father-in-law's Lexus he'd hacked into the vehicle's
15:17electronics and started the engine apparently without a key not even like three four seconds
15:24in front of you the cars there and somebody's just sitting on the client just gone like wouldn't you
15:31can't do anything you just can't do anything next day there it was a Diwali and of course our whole house
15:39was lit with lights everything was really bright in here nothing was dark still you know these guys
15:46came and just they took the car Aina's father-in-law relied on the car for GP and hospital visits he's
15:54also really upset and really sad about it that the cars not there and he's dependent on all of us that
16:03somebody can take him for his physical appointments doctor appointments and stuff the theft has had an
16:09impact on the whole family both the gates used to be open whole day and we used to lock at night we used
16:18to shut them at night but now I'm really scared like if you see one door is always closed now it's scary
16:25yeah the crime rate now and nowadays it's really going high and nothing is safe it scares me now
16:36I can't be alone in the house two weeks later the Lexus was found in a shipping container heading for
16:43Africa at Felixstowe port the gang responsible have been linked to more than 40 stolen vehicles two suspects
16:50are under investigation meanwhile Aina and her father-in-law are determined to put the incident
16:57behind them time is a big healer so I think with time I'll get over it back in Leeds Aaron and Shaq are
17:13tracking a stolen white MG their search has led them to an illegal chop shop where a suspected stolen
17:20car is just about to be stripped for parts police are on their way but the suspect is getting nervous
17:42sorry watch the gate he's got in the car watch the gate backup arrives in the nick of time
17:55the two officers are briefed by Aaron before listening to what the suspects got to say for himself
18:19it doesn't take them long to reach their verdict the suspects arrested cautioned and put in handcuffs
18:45Aaron and Shaq take the opportunity to search the container as a Mercedes A-Class they're looking for
19:02parts belonging to the stolen white MG according to the GPS tracker it was here yesterday but has now
19:09disappeared it doesn't take them long to find what they're looking for there are the wing mirrors for
19:16the energy the engine on the floor near the entrance to the workshop could also belong to the stolen white
19:26MG it's obviously been used recently it still had oil in it normally when you've got a car that's in a
19:33scrapyard or things like that a lot the oil will be dried this looks like it's probably recently been
19:38removed from a vehicle and still got wet oil in it around it it's confirmed the black car is stolen and
19:45is on false plates meanwhile Aaron's been checking the details on the suspect engine and the results
19:52have just come through we just had the engine number through yeah for the one that we're looking for
19:57in just 24 hours the stolen white MG has been taken apart and has effectively disappeared in and around
20:10the site there's there's numerous vehicle parts dotted everywhere including a number of white panels which
20:16on first value appear to be an MG matching the description of the one that we're here for so I
20:21believe at this point that our vehicle has probably met its demise inside the unit and and we're going
20:27to be dealing with the recovery of parts rather than a whole asset it all leads us to know that this
20:33unfortunately this is the location where our vehicles been chopped up it's terrible news for the owner but
20:40at least Aaron and Shaq may have helped stop this happening to others we've closed down a dismantling
20:46operation and we've given plenty of evidence and worked with the police here really well to sort
20:52of bring this to a close for who knows how many victims now and potentially could have been in the
20:58future not just catching stolen cars and getting them back but also catching the bad guy at the end of
21:08it is always a pleasant experience as well although some security measures to protect your car can be
21:24costly there are some simple steps you can take to deter opportunistic thieves like when parking your
21:31vehicle avoid parking in dark and secluded areas find a busier place that's well-lit and if possible use
21:42staffed car parks are close to other shoppers rather than away from other vehicles these are less likely to
21:51target your car if they think they might be disturbed don't leave valuable items like mobiles and laptops in plain
21:58view if you can't take them with you make sure they're well hidden and double check your central locking
22:06system has actually worked just off the m6 near Birmingham vehicle recovery specialist ax track have
22:20been contacted by a car rental company one of their higher cars has been clocked speeding three times they
22:28want the car back but the drivers refusing to return it he's speeding on frequent occasions he says
22:37that he's not in the country so we don't know who's driving that vehicle so the person who's driving the
22:42vehicle may not be insured so what we're looking to do is ultimately get the vehicle back without any sort of
22:49drama for want of a better word really the cars 150 miles away in Dartford Kent Alan's been using tracking
22:58software to monitor its movements most days it's sort of in this area but we can see that at the end of
23:05the day it always comes back to this location and that's the location there is overnight so
23:10Alan's colleagues trackers Jason and Ian are heading to Dartford to get the car back so contact was made
23:19with a customer and he basically told us he's not handing the motor vehicle back is in dispute with
23:25the client at the moment so it's a technical theft of a motor vehicle so today's operation basically is to
23:31go to where the vehicle's situated at the moment take the vehicle and then normal course of action what we'll
23:37do is we'll take the vehicle back to a safe location search it document any property to make and then
23:42make sure the vehicle safety to to to use and then we'll take that vehicle then back to one of the
23:47customers depots there's a risk to the vehicle and there's also a risk to the public in that it's been
23:54driven at high speeds at the moment the tracking team have been provided with a spare key so if they
24:01do find the car it should make things easier towards it's quite straightforward but of course as you
24:07know when we go to any of the vehicles we just don't know what we're going to find at the time not
24:13expecting to see the the customer there because that may happen but the purpose is obviously legally
24:18we're legally entitled to take the vehicle back now in terms of recovery it's exactly the same as a
24:24stolen vehicle there's tracker devices on the vehicle and we then use the technology to locate where
24:29that vehicle is with a key and recover the vehicle Jason and Ian are in regular contact with Alan back
24:38at base it looks like the driver hasn't been parking the hire car at his home address what we think on
24:45this occasion is that the customer because he doesn't want to play ball with us and hand the vehicle back
24:49he's actually left it and dumped the vehicle in a place not knowing that obviously there's tracking
24:55units on the vehicle this is County Road now yeah so County Road you go along County Road there should
25:02be mate at the top a left-hand turning pinpointing the precise location can be difficult in residential
25:08areas like this with a tight-knit network of side roads and alleyways the car we're looking for is an Audi a6
25:15and I say it's parked at the back it should be a right turning on Lee the phone rings at a critical
25:29moment all right I'm going to stop stop stop stop just go back there come back there right not now
25:34mates all right cheers thanks Mike just do a right on there there's a little cut through I think it's
25:40through there I think it's parked at the back of there keep the car here and what I'm gonna do is
25:45when I walk to it mate all right okay and just say that'd be easy mate yeah I'm just going up the
25:51moment the date is looking like it's around the corner maybe not not this one count still County
26:00Road it's not this one it's not this one fortunately not this one we have to go the other side it's like
26:06a game isn't it you know the games there and they try and outfox you I don't like to be outfoxed and I
26:11like to produce results and that's that's what drives me but we'll get there it's not moving which
26:18is the main thing you have to do a better map on this way no no let's have a look again we're on it
26:25they reconsult the map and this time they think they've found it but will it prove to be another
26:32dead end okay Jason needs to move fast before he spotted so he can get the car to a safe place to
26:48examine it the spare key works and he's off before anyone notices driving in convoy Jason and Ian head
27:10for a nearby petrol station forecourt to check the car over right let's go have a newsie see what's in
27:16it in the past we found clients that have lived in a vehicle for a number of days and they've actually
27:28used it as the house oh you'll be surprised what you find inside a car yeah it looks looks pretty
27:45clean and tidy what I'm going to do now is going to take photographs of the car check this see if
27:49there's any internal property inside make a note of that which I'll just crack on with that now but
27:55in terms of the normal stuff that we do we're happy we've got the car back in one place which
28:00is the main thing yeah no surprises this time the cars undamaged as for the driver he's facing three
28:09speeding fines nine points on his license and he could even be disqualified
28:25you
28:27you
28:28you
