01:03sailing on the good ship ambition this week are our two pairs of have a go holiday makers
01:17and they're on day three of their cruise here's to us it's a happy sailing best friends for more than a
01:24decade kerry and julie from worthing have taken numerous holidays at sea before but this is their
01:31first time together coming on the cruise with one of your friends i think is very important
01:36because you know you've got so many things to see and you can discuss everything and i think it's
01:42just exciting spending more time with you just you as well yeah yeah yeah has been it's it's been
01:49such a really really beautiful time so far so far it's been absolutely amazing
01:55also easing into life on board a mum and daughter duo shin and sarah originally from bradford
02:03our mother and daughter dynamic we bounce off each we do bounce off each other i think some of the
02:11roles are reversed sometimes but not with everything i think we have a good healthy dynamic oh this is
02:18gorgeous sunshine breakfast with a view so we like to go away every year once a year life's too short
02:28we want to make some good memories
02:30hello hello hello anybody there thank you
02:36well they've already made plenty of those as yesterday they spent a fun packed day in gibraltar
02:42i really enjoyed gibraltar and i think it's one of my really top places to visit and i would
02:51definitely go back what did you think oh i loved it me loved it have a bit of britain and a bit of
02:59spanish bye gibraltar cheers to the birthday girl thank you the port stop was also julie's birthday
03:08and bestie kerrie made sure she got to celebrate in style i mean kerrie pulled all the stops out for
03:14me oh my god you know you can be a bit apprehensive being away on your birthday but it was it was a day
03:23an experience i'll never ever forget sailing south from cadiz in southern spain the ship headed onwards to
03:31the british territory of gibraltar and now it's sailing 470 miles northwest to the port of vigo
03:39today the guests are at sea for the first time on their trip a chance for the holiday makers to
03:51really get to know the ship have some well-deserved r&r and try out any activities that tickle their fancy
03:59for sarah and shin it's a leisurely wake up and a chance to take in their breathtaking view
04:10oh this is the life you're loving this oh this is it this is lovely i'm looking forward to the rest of
04:17the day sarah is a cruising newbie but veteran shin knows the ropes so this is like a sea day
04:26yeah so what happens on a sea day like what's what's a sea day entail on a sea day we normally
04:33have a easy morning have a breakfast and probably look for a class to do some dancing or some exercise
04:43there'll be some um probably card games there's some music on somewhere usually have a walk on top
04:50couple of laps just so i can fit some lunches that's good so you do do some exercise while
04:56she went all the day do i always walk around the ship but you'd be amazed how many steps you actually
05:01do i was really excited for the sea day yeah it was going to be nice wasn't it just to just a chill
05:07chill together sounds good well it looks like you're settling in nicely
05:11friends carrie and julia are experienced cruisers so they know exactly what to expect
05:26one of the highlights of a cruise is so many to pick from but it's actually the days at sea
05:37that's when you get to find your way around the ship you actually get to relax because it's very
05:41full-on crew it's a holiday but it's actually as full-on as you want to make it but the sea day
05:46is just the day when you actually properly get the full benefit of being on a ship so with so many
05:52activities to choose from kerry and julie have opted for some r and r
05:56accompanied by a sweet morning refreshment from the pool bar
06:04oh i need a bib
06:10i'll get you one more i need a bigger bib than that
06:15thank you so much this looks really good
06:19i need to live this life it is nice though you do it's it's just that whole thing of being away
06:27and thinking i don't get used to it well you don't have to think about anything do you i don't
06:31want to think about anything i'm just thinking about what i need to eat next
06:33oh yeah what i'm gonna eat and what i'm gonna wear
06:36loving life so much kerry and julie's thoughts turn to their next holiday
06:41but no i think shall we do another cruise oh a hundred percent yeah but you're gonna come
06:46with me oh i am coming with you you're not going with anyone else i don't i don't want to go with
06:49anyone else i'm your cruising friend i know i know i'm a friend for life yeah yeah yeah yeah
06:54yeah yeah yeah i'm a cruising friend for life now
06:56i think it's in the cavern whilst kerry and julie kick back and relax mother and daughter duo
07:05shin and sarah have opted for a less sedate activity we're doing tap but because we haven't got tap shoes
07:12on it's a soft shoe oh try and say that after a drink soft shoe shuffle
07:17leading the class is pro dancer matt and he certainly knows his stuff
07:23let's go
07:25the soft shoe shuffle was made popular in the early 20th century and is derivative to tap
07:33however it's only performed in soft sole shoes making it perfect for our cruisers
07:40so we decided to do uh something that both of us have never done before we both like a dance but
07:46we thought we would try the uh soft shoe shoveling it's not shoveling sarah it's shuffling you're
07:54going to stand on your left leg you're going to run your right leg forward don't put it down
08:01you're going to brush it forwards you're going to brush it back and you're going to place it down
08:07i thought it was going to be easy i thought it was to shuffle your feet
08:12but actually it wasn't as easy as we thought it was
08:16if you thought the basics were hard shin matt's about to step it up again
08:20but make you a bit smaller so all you're going to do is go shuffle shuffle shuffle and then you're
08:27going to step step clap
08:31and now for the tricky bit putting it all together
08:35five six seven eight shuffle step other shuffle step keep going
08:44it's one thing learning a new dance routine from scratch and it's quite another on a moving vessel
08:51it's a ship it's a ship it wasn't me
08:54have you had a morning drink it wasn't me it was a ship
08:57i don't drink keep going
09:01i were going that way and ship were going that way
09:03and whilst the ship was rocking i shuffled off that way
09:08and ship shuffled this way i did think you know ask the captain to slow down
09:13and to add to all the chaos matt's decided to add another move
09:19and then we have a cheeky little arm to go with it which makes it the flash
09:24i can't wait to see a cheeky arm put together with some shuffling feet
09:29up up then it gets crazy because we go down
09:36down down we'll repeat it go up up go down
09:42down oh i'm with you sarah it's all getting a bit confusing
09:47so the way it's going to work is it's going to go two flashes high
09:51and then it's going to go two flashes low
09:55two flashes high
09:57two flashes low
09:59that's a lot of flashing
10:00two flashes
10:01please no one start flashing
10:03two flashes low
10:04that's a lot of flashing there
10:05please i've got to make it through the day
10:07it's day three of this week's cruise
10:24and our travelers are spending the day at sea
10:27whilst the ship makes its way to its next stop of vigo
10:31while shin and sarah started their morning leisurely
10:37sit in gentle sea breeze
10:40it wasn't long before they were fully involved in a dance class
10:44six seven eight seven four
10:48on the other side of the ship
10:50kerry and julie were kicking back and relaxing
10:52i need to live this life
10:54i'm just thinking about what i need to eat next
10:56yeah what i'm going to eat and what i'm going to wear
10:59rejoining shin and sarah in their soft shoe shuffle class
11:07matt has decided that it's time to put all the new moves together
11:11what happens if it all goes wrong
11:14smile and wave
11:15smile and wave
11:16and just remember that
11:17i'm just going to stand and go like that
11:19if you get it wrong
11:20i'll dance around here
11:21i think we picked it up fairly quickly
11:24but again it goes back to having natural rhythm
11:27rhythm yeah if you haven't got rhythm
11:28natural timing
11:29yeah
11:30great musicality
11:32all right let's go
11:34jazz hands at the ready girls
11:36five six
11:37five six
11:38seven eight
11:38slow shuffle
11:43yeah that's it
11:45step step
11:47really good fun
11:48doing it
11:49and exercise
11:50oh good exercise
11:51oh yeah
11:52we love music
11:53but we'll have having a booger
11:54step step
11:56clap last note
11:57let's go
11:58step step
12:00step
12:00clap shuffle
12:01shuffle
12:02i've got the jazz hands
12:04i can do some of the hand movements
12:06and she said if you get stuck
12:07just do jazz hands
12:08and that's what i did
12:09last time bring it high
12:12bring it low
12:15and jazz hands
12:17you know that was actually really good
12:20it was actually really good
12:23well that's a 10 from me
12:26well done
12:27i think i would do it again
12:29i would do it again
12:30would you
12:31yeah we would
12:31yeah we'd do it again
12:33do you know what
12:33we've got a tap number
12:34on our musical show
12:35why don't you do that instead
12:37brava girls
12:41time to shuffle off
12:42to your next class
12:43with the weather on the turn
12:49julie and kerry have decided to take part in an activity that combines nature and science
12:55the cruise ship have bought in an ocean conservation charity orca to give the guests the lowdown on these amazing creatures and the girls have gone along to check it out
13:10we were just sort of walking around the ship and then we came across the orca workshop which was great
13:16we heard some people on the deck the other day we said we must find out where they do that because it just we missed the sighting but
13:22animal lovers anyway so anything is of interest in our life with animals
13:27if you're interested you could actually become what we call an orca ocean watcher on this cruise
13:34sounds fun
13:35the reason that we're looking to protect whales and dolphins is because actually they do still face a lot of threats
13:40in most parts of the world we don't hunt them anymore
13:43but with entanglement in fishing nets
13:46or plastic pollution
13:48so by studying these animals and learning where they are and where they can be found
13:53then we can help governments and industry put in place protections for them
13:57and what we do is we use volunteers to collect scientific data about the animals we see
14:03oh so proper it's for a conservationist ocean conservation as well
14:07yeah absolutely
14:07incredible
14:08we will have to teach you how to identify the different species though right
14:12so we're going to do that quickly now
14:14so there are three types of animal whales dolphins and porpoises
14:17they're all mammals and they're all closely related
14:19but there's little things that we can do to tell the difference between them
14:23we're going to look at
14:24the porpoise first
14:25yes okay
14:26and they've got a small triangular dorsal fin
14:29nothing else around here has a fin quite like that
14:31oh wow
14:32whereas when we go for our dolphins
14:33oh wow
14:34it's completely different
14:35that's sort of the typical dorsal fin when you're imagining one isn't it
14:38yeah it is
14:38absolutely
14:39next up we have our toothed whales
14:41oh look at the tiny little thing there
14:43yeah so you can see
14:44it looks like an incisor tooth doesn't it
14:47you can see straight away it's much smaller
14:49but it's also two thirds down the back of the body of the animal
14:52it was nice to know about all the different
14:54where their fins are
14:55because i never thought
14:56i never even thought about it
14:58thought their fins were in the same place
14:59yeah
14:59you can become a citizen scientist and help us
15:01we do that with our orca ocean watchers app
15:04so you both got smartphones
15:05the owner isn't that smart
15:08you can use the app to record information about all of the different animals that hopefully
15:16we're going to see on deck
15:17wow
15:18and julie and i actually live by the coast
15:20the app's always going to be on the phone
15:21so yeah we're going to make a concerted effort to keep up with a bit of marine knowledge
15:26yeah it keeps you involved in looking after the thing
15:29yeah yeah absolutely
15:30we'll go up there and we'll stand on deck and we'll keep an eye out
15:34and every time you see something you can just log onto your phone
15:36and you can say this is how many animals we've seen
15:39oh so we basically tell you tell the app
15:41oh this sounds like my thought of job actually
15:43just standing around
15:44yeah like you're standing around
15:45yeah
15:46it's worse than to know
15:47on a ship
15:47on a cruise ship
15:49i also have a little gift for you both
15:52oh lovely
15:53to help you become orca ocean watchers
15:55so we have these special
15:58orca ocean watchers phone cases
16:00thank you so much
16:02i love it
16:03lovely
16:03so armed with their new app loaded
16:06and their snazzy phone cases
16:08julie and carrier are all set for some whale watching
16:11meanwhile shin and sarah are indulging in a spot of table tennis
16:17go on girls
16:18you're really upping your bpm's today
16:20i got them
16:23right that one's yours
16:27thank you
16:28this one's mine
16:30smooth side and a rough side
16:33what's why what's that for
16:34smooth and rough what's the difference
16:37hitting the ball
16:38right go on then
16:41i know you have to bounce the ball
16:43on here
16:44and it has to go over your side
16:46i'm not the most sportiest person in the world
16:49i like table tennis
16:50i've played it before
16:51not professionally or anything
16:53just
16:53you know
16:55ooh big shoes to fill sarah
16:57good luck
16:59you ready
16:59ready as i'll ever be
17:01oh
17:06see there you go
17:07i think that's the point to me
17:09is that one nil
17:10i'm not great at table tennis
17:12oh sorry i don't even aim
17:14but that's fine isn't it
17:16i've got other skills
17:17so it's all good
17:18i had to tell sarah how it's done
17:22yeah
17:22no sarah bounce it
17:24not hit the net love
17:25oh sorry
17:27now this is the thing
17:28you do have to move quite a bit
17:29and i'm not into this sport malarkey
17:32and moving
17:33hey
17:34no it's not for me
17:40that's how you play it
17:43i just watch it
17:45i do like to win
17:47do you have to go back inside
17:49you have
17:51it's just not for me
17:56quite happily taking a game somewhere along the line
17:59as long as you know
18:01someone can bounce the ball back to you
18:04i think that was another point to me
18:06i think mum's definitely more into this than me
18:10she's definitely better than me at this
18:12100%
18:12that's fine
18:13it's just a tiny little ball and a
18:17you know
18:17something with a bit more
18:19shepaz for me
18:21shepaz
18:23i like that word
18:24right
18:25we're literally getting nowhere here
18:27so why don't we play to
18:30sudden death
18:31yeah
18:32next point
18:33and that's it
18:34fine by me
18:35right
18:35are you ready
18:36yeah
18:38i'm guessing you're gonna get this
18:40but
18:40no you are getting
18:42that's absolutely fine
18:44it's all about the taking part isn't it
18:47yeah
18:48yeah see there you go
18:49shepaz sarah
18:52you only went and won
18:54did i win
18:55oh
18:56i won
18:57there you go
18:59so table tennis
19:00was actually good fun
19:02and we did burn up a sweat
19:03but it is definitely harder than it looks
19:05especially on a ship that is moving
19:0710-10 for the table tennis
19:09definitely
19:10well you've certainly changed your tune
19:12but well done
19:13thank you very much
19:15see you later
19:16leaving shin licking her wounds
19:24on the top deck
19:26kerry and julia meeting up with sea life conservationist steve
19:30to pick up some more vital tips on sea life spotting
19:33and they're not the only guests getting involved
19:37so is it like weather dependent
19:40so would you more likely see orcas playing or whales surfacing in a better weather
19:44it's easier for us to see them
19:46they're still there
19:47but it's easier for us to see them when the seas are calm and flat
19:51everything that breaks the surface is going to be easy to spot
19:54you've got to keep those peepers peeled ladies
19:58so we're looking for for the big whales
20:03those blows on the horizon
20:04far away
20:05those big sort of
20:06because that's what allowed me to you being on the ship
20:08the other day we said oh they're seeing some blows
20:10so we charged up people
20:11we didn't know what we were looking at
20:12so how high does the blow go
20:13it can go up to 10 meters with a blue whale
20:16so about 30 feet
20:18the ones that we're most likely to see in this area are thin whales
20:21and their blows are around 7 or 8 meters
20:23so you can see them right out of the horizon
20:25oh wow
20:26i found steve to be so informative
20:29yeah he was
20:30we had like one-on-one time with him as well
20:32which was really really good
20:33so we look down and see if we can actually see something
20:36so we look over because sometimes it can come right up down by the ship as well
20:40particularly those dolphins
20:42they'll come in because they like to play alongside the ship like i said
20:45time to get using those apps
20:48every time you see something you hit the sightings button
20:52you say how many animals what species what behavior
20:56app takes you through all of those stages
20:59and then once you're done you can just click upload
21:01and send it through to us with all of the other data we get
21:04and the clever bit is the app will send you a notification if there's been a sighting
21:09and it's quite therapeutic as well
21:11it is very therapeutic it's good for the soul to look at the ocean
21:14it is good for the soul absolutely
21:17it's something that's unique to being on a ship
21:19because that wouldn't be offered at maybe an all-inclusive resort or something
21:23but actually but you've got to take full advantage of the things that are only available when you're at sea
21:27okay well there's nothing out here at the moment
21:29okay
21:30but what i'd say is you've got some binoculars in your cabin
21:32yes
21:33so maybe go and grab them and then when you're around the ship if you keep them on you
21:37we can get you to record some of that
21:39well watch a tick
21:41tick
21:57it's day three of this week's cruise
22:00and our two pairs of holiday makers have been enjoying all the ship has to offer
22:05oh see there you go
22:07i think that's the point to me
22:08is that one nil
22:09and it's quite therapeutic as well
22:11it's very therapeutic
22:12it's good for the soul to look at the ocean
22:14the ship has set sail for its next destination vigo
22:19famous for its stunning medieval architecture and its gastro scene
22:24meanwhile back on board mum and daughter shin and sarah have gone all fred and ginger
22:32and they've taken part in a dance class
22:34you got this
22:36yeah
22:37whilst kerry and julie have not struck gold on the sea mammal front
22:42they've been enjoying their day at sea
22:44and now they're about to indulge in a passion of julie's hot dog eating
22:50hot dogs
22:51oh they look nice
22:53they look nice
22:57whilst waiting to be notified of any sea life activity
23:00at least julie and kerry have the alfresco grill to distract them
23:05lovely this is really nice eating outside for a change
23:11it is beautiful
23:11the sun's coming out now as well
23:13i know good
23:13don't you just love when you can
23:15like the chances you get to eat outside
23:18i know it's lovely
23:19and you know all is good with the world
23:21i thought it was going to be a cloudy day but we might get to see some whales or dogs
23:26this would be nice now yeah when we go down and get the um
23:29yeah
23:29all set girls all you need now is a notification enjoy your lunch and have some respite
23:39oh you're lovely
23:40oh you're lovely
23:41that hot dog
23:42is it nice
23:43well you're a hot dog connoisseur so you'd know
23:45they're my favourite thin hot dogs it's terrible
23:47my guilty pleasure is a hot dog
23:50enjoy it
23:51a little bit of what you fancy does you good
23:54i think we're going to get an alert as well
23:57definitely
23:59because the sea conditions are good aren't they today
24:02i think it sounded like the marine bar
24:05i know
24:06i've really got going
24:07i know
24:07i might get a badge
24:10find you sitting on worbing pier for the rest of the year
24:12in your hippie gear
24:16in my hippie gear
24:17looking at whales
24:18the minute you start hugging a tree i'll have to readdress our friendship with a friend
24:24we're going to grab those binoculars
24:27yeah find a nice place to sit
24:30and wait for the alerts to go off
24:34wait for the alerts to go off
24:35lovely
24:37sounds like the perfect plan
24:41oh have you really
24:42yeah
24:43on the other side of the ship
24:45sarah is about to fulfill a lifetime ambition of shins
24:49hi
24:52wow
24:54the beating heart of any cruise is the bridge
24:58the official term is the navigation and command center
25:02it's also home to the captain
25:04i'd gathered a little surprise for mum
25:09she'd been banging on about meeting the captain
25:12wonder if we get to meet the captain
25:13i'd like to see the captain
25:14maybe we'll go for drinks with the captain
25:16what about a meal with the captain
25:17cocktails with the captain
25:18the captain the captain the captain
25:20hi
25:20hello
25:21hello
25:22welcome to the bridge
25:23thank you
25:24pleased to meet you
25:24thank you so much
25:25how are you doing
25:27thank you
25:27are you okay are you ready
25:29i'm really excited
25:30very good
25:31we managed to see the bridge which was absolutely amazing
25:34i was so excited when i found out i was really shocked
25:39amazed and surprised excited all the emotions
25:43everything
25:43you are here on the one of the most important place on the ship
25:49this is the brain of all operation
25:53right
25:53suppose meeting the captain is meeting a celebrity
25:56and also he is in charge of the ship
26:01he's running the operation
26:03and he gets to see where it goes
26:07and i wanted to do that
26:10so this is our main steering column
26:14okay don't touch
26:15believe me or not this entire vessel can be drive with this
26:18from all that
26:19absolutely
26:20and right now it's an autopilot
26:22right now we are no hands
26:24cruise control
26:25am i allowed to touch it
26:27gently
26:29just gently
26:30just gently
26:31oh sir
26:32how do you feel
26:33great
26:34amazing
26:35i can't see though
26:37i got to steer it
26:40yeah
26:40you got to hold it for a second
26:41i had to get my tiptoes of it because i'm a bit short
26:44but do you know what it felt great
26:46that's the thing
26:47so the person who is operating the ship
26:50he don't need always be watching what's going on around
26:54but he will rely on the indicators have here
26:58i knew who was steering the ship
27:01and i felt right i know i know who's doing it now
27:05i'm okay i feel better now
27:07and i got to steer it as well
27:10so being the quartermaster is very important
27:13very sensitive
27:14and very delicate
27:16that was one of the best moments for me
27:20i got to meet the captain
27:21and i got to go on the bridge
27:23and i actually got to steer the ship
27:25okay
27:25all right
27:26very intelligent
27:26captain now look
27:27take them hands off
27:28i promise not to do the ship
27:30with no sea life activation alerts
27:38kerry and julia once again enjoying some relaxation
27:41oh my goodness
27:44gosh this is baking
27:45oh that is really baking
27:46lovely isn't it
27:48you know this is what we came here for isn't it
27:50this is the life
27:51just total relaxation
27:53oh that sun is beautiful
27:53oh my goodness
27:54can you feel it licking your face
27:56licking your face
27:57oh julie i'm not sure that's the expression
28:00can you feel it licking your face
28:01i can feel it in my fingers
28:03i can feel it in my toes
28:04oh i know that one kerry
28:05love is all around us
28:07it was a hit for wet wet wet in the 90s
28:09meanwhile on the top deck
28:13steve and the other sea life spotters
28:15have had a lucky break
28:16as a pod of dolphins has suddenly appeared
28:19you need all that feeling everywhere it needs to go
28:22isn't it lovely
28:23but blissfully unaware
28:26kerry and julie have no idea
28:27warning people
28:29phone reception can be hit and miss when you're at sea
28:32vitamin c
28:33what's that noise
28:34oh
28:35oh
28:36is that the whale call
28:38oh it's the whale
28:38it's mr whale
28:39hello
28:41is that a sighting
28:42yes great
28:43get your binoculars
28:44yeah get your binoculars
28:46oh
28:46off you go
28:47okay right
28:48where is it
28:48i think it's up on 11 where we met him earlier
28:51oh gosh
28:51hang on
28:52i think you said he was up there
28:53is it where
28:54i don't know if it's dolphins or whales
28:56oh hurry up ladies
28:58please get a wriggle on
29:00because dolphins and whales don't wait for anyone
29:03hello
29:03how are you
29:05so you saw something
29:06we got the call
29:07yeah good i'm glad you got the call
29:09yeah we've had a really good day
29:10that's amazing
29:11we've seen some whale blows in the distance
29:13really
29:14we actually had a really big pod of striped dolphins
29:16come in and play around the ship
29:18oh how lovely
29:19and then we also had some rissos dolphins
29:21which swam under the ship
29:23and then swam away from us
29:24so we got a really great view
29:26so really close up as well
29:27really really close up
29:29oh fantastic
29:29so we just take a look
29:31absolutely
29:32so i would look up ahead
29:34yeah
29:34and i would scan with your naked eyes
29:37yep
29:37and then if you see anything you want to look closer at
29:39that's when you bring your binoculars up
29:41okay
29:41all right
29:42you'll have a better sort of peripheral vision
29:44with your binoculars down
29:45and just remember we're looking for splashes
29:49we're looking for dark shapes
29:51looking for whale blows
29:52all sorts of stuff
29:54so you said look with your eyes first
29:57and then bring the binoculars to the eyes
29:59yeah
29:59oh would it be fantastic to see something else
30:02yeah really good
30:03i feel like captain bird's eye
30:05yeah me too
30:06being on a ship
30:08and just learning about
30:09the marine life
30:12yeah
30:12is wonderful
30:14so typically how many hours a day
30:16or how much time a day would you spend
30:17ocean watching like this
30:20well i mean we'll do our best
30:21to spend as much time on deck as possible
30:23we have to eat
30:24and have breaks occasionally
30:25but between the two of us
30:27that are normally on board these ships
30:29we can cover a good chunk of the day
30:31wow
30:31and the more data we get
30:32yeah
30:33the better our understanding is
30:34of that habitat
30:35is only two of you on the ship
30:36doing this any one time
30:37sometimes it's only one
30:39but usually on these ships
30:40it's two of us
30:41oh i hope we see
30:42so do i
30:43i'm willing to come to the surface
30:45just make me a little blowhole
30:47if only it was that easy
30:49being on a ship
30:51and having the opportunity
30:52to do something
30:53like whale watching
30:54first of all
30:55it's kind of a lesson
30:56in mindfulness isn't it
30:57it's another level of appreciation
30:59for something that
31:00you previously probably
31:01wouldn't have bothered
31:01to take the time to do
31:02but actually
31:03you've got the time
31:04well sadly girls
31:06you'll have to adapt
31:07the mindful approach
31:08as the whales and dolphins
31:09are proving very elusive
31:11but this may not be the end
31:13of carrie and julie's whale
31:15watching journey
31:15now we've got the app
31:18we can use it all the time
31:19i'm going to have to get
31:19i'm armed and ready
31:20now i've got these
31:21thank you so much
31:23thank you so much
31:24and thanks for becoming
31:25ocean watchers
31:26yeah
31:26yeah
31:26it's been a pleasure
31:28thank you so much
31:29thank you
31:30yeah it's a shame
31:33we didn't see it
31:33but i'm sure
31:34we could keep on doing this
31:35we're armed with knowledge
31:36now
31:36and a pair of binoculars
31:37so we will be doing this again
31:39yeah
31:39we live by the sea
31:41yeah
31:41we live
31:41on the sussex coast
31:43so there is absolutely
31:44no way
31:44that this is not going
31:46to be brought forward
31:47no
31:47just having the app
31:48because we are some dolphins
31:49or a seal
31:50but it keeps all getting
31:51spotted doesn't it
31:52so yeah
31:53we could do that
31:55it's another little
31:56yeah
31:56yeah we could
31:57a you and me thing
31:59we could do
31:59absolutely
32:00well that in itself
32:03is a result
32:04back at the nerve centre
32:08aka the bridge
32:09shin is continuing
32:11to live her best life
32:13so let me show you
32:14exactly the place
32:15from where we are
32:16operating the vessel
32:17right
32:17lovely
32:18please follow me
32:19this way
32:20no keep your hands off
32:21hands out
32:22if shin wasn't impressed
32:24enough
32:24she's about to glean
32:26even more kernels
32:27of nautical knowledge
32:28so the bridge
32:30so the bridge
32:30has three
32:31operating consoles
32:33one on the centre
32:34where all
32:35our officers
32:36are standing
32:37and two
32:38on the bridge wings
32:39so the bridge
32:40wing console
32:41has the same
32:42function
32:43which the main
32:44console on the centre
32:45oh how exciting
32:47you could all
32:48take one
32:49okay so you have
32:50three but they all
32:51pretty much do the same thing
32:52absolutely
32:52so we can transfer
32:53from control
32:54from one to another
32:55this one is operating
32:56the engine
32:56right
32:57this one is operating
32:59the thrusters
33:00and this is the
33:02steering wheel
33:02oh it's like a mini one
33:04that's sweet
33:04oh look at that
33:05this huge shit
33:06and that tiny little thing
33:08oh my gosh
33:09bigger doesn't mean
33:10better
33:10oh yeah that's true
33:12they expected the wheel
33:15to be a bit bigger
33:16yeah
33:17it was only a bit
33:18tiny wasn't it
33:20yeah
33:20the wheel
33:21to steer
33:22and the secondary
33:22wheels about that
33:23are big
33:23I expected a bit
33:26I didn't mean
33:27one of those
33:27big old
33:28whirly things
33:28but I did expect
33:30to be a little
33:30bit bigger
33:31you know
33:32because you've got
33:33a big ship
33:33a little wheel
33:35having explored
33:38the ship's consoles
33:39Sarah wants to check
33:40out the captain's
33:41credentials
33:42so how long
33:43have you been
33:43doing this
33:44well
33:45it's a very
33:46interesting question
33:47how long
33:48does it take
33:49to get to your
33:49position
33:50this July
33:51I'm celebrating
33:52my 30th
33:54anniversary
33:55and 20 years
33:59anniversary

34:00on the passenger
34:01ship
34:01oh that's
34:03brilliant
34:03I really enjoyed
34:04it
34:05I was very
34:05excited
34:06and I really
34:07really
34:08it felt like
34:08a real
34:09like core
34:09memory
34:10felt like
34:10VIPs
34:11didn't we
34:11backstage
34:12not backstage
34:13it's back
34:14of a ship
34:14isn't it
34:14brilliant
34:15yeah
34:15front of the
34:16ship
34:17as it's
34:18such a
34:19monumental
34:19moment
34:20it's got
34:21to be
34:21captured
34:22is it
34:23possible
34:23we could
34:24get a

34:32oh yes please
34:34oh thank you
34:35beautiful
34:36my personality
34:37changed

34:40look at me
34:41I'm a captain
34:41now
34:42you can make
34:42the decision

35:45oh what a
35:46lovely day
35:47lovely and
35:50relaxing
35:50going on the
35:51bridge
35:51getting to
35:52meet the
35:53captain
35:53yeah you
35:54never better
35:55than that will
35:55you

35:56I won't
35:57forget that
35:57that was so

36:01yeah

36:15back on
36:15leaving shin and
36:21sarah basking in
36:22the late evening
36:23sun below deck
36:24kerry and julia
36:25are about to
36:26indulge in
36:26something a lot
36:27more west end
36:28and kerry's booked
36:29them a backstage
36:30tour before the
36:31show starts
36:32good evening
36:35ladies how are
36:36we i'm katie
36:37us the cruise
36:37director
36:37nice to meet
36:38you nice to
36:39meet you
36:40we got the
36:40opportunity to
36:41go and have a
36:42look backstage
36:42which for me was
36:44fascinating because
36:45having worked in
36:46that environment
36:46it's completely
36:47different now on
36:48modern ships than
36:49it used to be
36:49before taking
36:51cruises for
36:52pleasure
36:52kerry spent 10
36:53years working on
36:54them
36:55my late husband
36:58was the cruise
36:58director and i
36:59was the social
37:00director
37:00between the pair
37:02of us we ran
37:03the entertainment
37:04department so
37:05yeah it's always
37:06fascinating for me
37:07talking to people
37:07who still do that
37:08job but on
37:09modern ships
37:10well you're gonna
37:13feel right at
37:14home here kerry
37:15especially as the
37:16ship has two
37:17shows a night in
37:18their theater
37:19so ladies this is
37:21the set for
37:21tonight's show
37:22it's chronicles of
37:23a pirate king
37:23we've got lots
37:24going on at this
37:25evening how long
37:26did it take to
37:27get this so this
37:27tonight our
37:28technicians four of
37:29them took an hour
37:30to set all of
37:30this up
37:31that's good
37:31yeah
37:32oh they work
37:33with speed
37:34they do a great
37:34you're gonna say
37:35a dial
37:35yeah
37:36how many separate
37:37shows have you
37:38got like from
37:39this production team
37:39we have eight
37:39production shows
37:40two plays a murder
37:42mystery and a lot
37:43of solo cabaret
37:44that is such a lot
37:46that is so much
37:47incredible
37:47no the team
37:48kept busy on board
37:49the team
37:49keep busy
37:50set tour done

38:20super let's head
38:21on through
38:21the on board
38:24performers don't
38:25just juggle
38:25working across
38:26several productions
38:27at one time
38:28most of them
38:29also have day jobs
38:30on the ship
38:31as well
38:31haven't we seen

38:58for the show
38:58good
38:59how long does
39:00all your make-up
39:00take to put on
39:01it depends on
39:02each show
39:03this one takes
39:03me slightly longer
39:04because I've got
39:04to recreate my face
39:06to look like a
39:07completely different
39:08character so this
39:08probably takes me
39:09around an hour
39:09to an hour and
39:1015 minutes
39:11you need to
39:11grow a beard
39:12I know
39:12I know
39:13I do
39:13and then get rid
39:14of it for tomorrow
39:15and then get rid
39:15of it for tomorrow
39:15and it'll all come
39:17together with a wig
39:18with a hat
39:18and a full costume
39:19later on

39:21the second show
39:22thanks Matt
39:23that's ok
39:24have fun
39:24enjoy the show
39:25guys
39:25thank you
39:26I'm sure we will
39:27back on the
39:30sun deck
39:30Shin and Sarah
39:32are indulging in
39:33more bubbles
39:34couple of drinks
39:36oh here we are
39:37oh lovely
39:38bye ginger ale
39:39oh thank you
39:41that one's mine
39:42that one's
39:44that one's mine
39:44that's a sparkling wine
39:45thank you
39:46oh Sarah
39:47cheers
39:50oh look at that
39:57nice
39:57this is what it's all
39:58about
39:59isn't it
39:59absolutely
40:00chilling
40:01hot tub
40:02couple of drinks
40:03everyone waiting
40:05on his hand and foot
40:06what else do we need
40:07a drink
40:10well from what I can tell
40:13that was what cruise life
40:15is all about
40:15I mean
40:16sitting in the hot tub
40:18drinking one hand
40:20sailing out to a new
40:22destination
40:23is that what cruising
40:24is all about
40:24I think so
40:25I told you it was
40:26it was a bubble galore
40:28first time Sarah
40:31has loved sea life
40:32so much
40:33that she's even
40:34thinking about
40:34who else she might
40:35share a cruise
40:36with next time
40:37I think there is a
40:39preconception of cruising
40:40being for
40:41maybe slightly more
40:43mature people
40:44or a certain
40:45calibre of person
40:47now from what I've
40:48experienced during
40:49this trip
40:50this cruise
40:51I would definitely
40:53take the girls cruising
40:54oh Sarah
40:56how poetic
40:57you're giving me
40:58Pam Ayers vibes
40:59so next stop
41:01there you go
41:02I've never been there
41:03me neither
41:04I'm looking forward
41:06to basically
41:06just more adventures
41:07getting to see
41:08more of the
41:09country
41:11more of Spain
41:12or to the next
41:13destination
41:14and just learning
41:14and finding out more
41:15below deck
41:20the scene is set
41:21for an adventure
41:21of the swashbuckling kind
41:23and Kerry and Julie
41:24have taken their seats
41:25for tonight's performance
41:26so how was it
41:28when you were
41:29on the ships
41:29the theatres and that
41:31well they're like
41:31it's completely different
41:32is it
41:32so we would have
41:33one massive theatre
41:34on the ship
41:35but they would have
41:35lectures
41:36lecture programmes
41:38maybe the port talks
41:39would go on in there
41:39but these modern ships
41:41were these
41:41really
41:42massive
41:43like purpose built theatres
41:44so the theatres
41:46weren't like this
41:47you know it would just
41:48be basically a room
41:49but you'd have
41:49all the seating
41:50seating would be like this
41:51but you never had
41:52these massive
41:52massive production shows
41:54but not like this
41:55not like this
41:56it is quite unbelievable
41:57that a theatre is like
41:58that on a ship
41:59to be honest with you
42:00you don't
42:00you can't imagine it
42:02until you get into it
42:03it's quite a wow
42:04when you walk through
42:05the doors
42:06you must experience
42:07to go
42:07and everyone who's on a ship
42:09you have to go
42:09to see one of the shows
42:11and finally
42:12it's showtime
42:14oh my god
42:22when they all came in
42:24and they're all sort of
42:24running around
42:25at the beginning of the show
42:27they all came
42:27running down
42:28yeah that was really nice
42:30that was a fun bit
42:31it's just a really good
42:38uplifting feel good way
42:39to spend an evening
42:40yeah it was nice
42:41it's actually a real
42:45proper treat
42:47amazing
42:48that was really good
42:50an opportunity to go
42:52to the theatre
42:52is always something
42:53I'll do
42:54it's like a proper
42:55West End show
42:56it was lovely
42:57thoroughly enjoyed it
42:58it's been an action
43:04packed day at sea
43:05for our guests
43:05and they have fully
43:06embraced all life
43:08on deck has to offer
43:09I do think the cruising
43:11life is definitely
43:12a bit of me now
43:13yeah it's something
43:14I can see myself doing
43:15and I can understand
43:16now why you do
43:17what you do
43:18yeah
43:18yeah so the sea day
43:20for me is always
43:20a special treat anyway
43:22because it's a day
43:22to regroup
43:23relax
43:24oh I love the sea day
