President Donald Trump said his administration plans to eliminate a number of government programmes as a result of the shutdown.

00:00Here we go..
00:27I'm going to get to it.
00:56I'm here to advocate for the end to the shutdown.
01:02We need to bring this shutdown to a close so that the Federal Aviation Administration
01:06and the committed aviation safety professionals can put this distraction behind us and completely
01:14focus on their vital work.
01:18On this vote, the yeas are 45, the nays are 50, three-fifths of the senators duly chosen
01:23and sworn not having voted.
01:26House and Senate Democrats have consistently made clear that we will sit down with anyone
01:33at any time and at any place, either here at the Capitol or over at the White House,
01:40to reopen the government, to enact a bipartisan spending agreement that actually meets the
01:46needs of the American people, and to address the Republican health care crisis.
01:53Democrats over here are playing games.
01:55We have one plea and one plea alone.
01:57We need a handful of Democrats to stop the madness, reopen the government so that we can get to
02:03these critical debates about the year-end policy decisions with regard to the further reforms
02:09to health care.
02:10Have you identified programs to eliminate under this shutdown?
02:13Oh, sure.
02:14Sure.
02:15Which ones?
02:16We have a lot.
02:17I'm not going to tell you, but we'll be announcing it pretty soon, but we have a lot of things
02:20that we're going to eliminate and permanently eliminate.
02:23You know, one of the things that we have is some advantage, you could say, but because of the
02:29shutdown, which I think they made a big mistake, we're able to take out billions and billions
02:34of dollars of waste, fraud, and abuse, and they've handed it, you know, on a silver platter.
02:39How many permanent jobs are you talking about?
02:42Well, I could tell you, I'll be able to tell you that in four or five days, if this keeps
02:45going on.
02:46If this keeps going on, it'll be substantial, and a lot of those jobs will never come back.
02:53But you're going to have a lot closer to a balanced budget, actually.
02:59He is a very strong, very good leader.
03:02He's a nice man, but he can...
03:12He's a nice man, but he's a nice man.
