Several US air traffic workers distributed leaflets asking people to pressure their senators to end the government shutdown, at the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Virginia on Oct 14.

More than 13,000 air traffic controllers received what could be their last paycheck this month, if the government shutdown is not resolved in the next two weeks.

00:30air traffic control is inherently a stressful job it's one in which it requires intense focus
00:37every day we have to be a hundred percent right a hundred percent of the time not knowing exactly
00:42how I'm going to have childcare for my kids or put gas in the car or pay the next mortgage payment
00:48adds a certain level of stress onto an already stressful profession it's just very difficult
00:54the longer that this goes on the more you know any savings that I may have start to dwindle and
00:59it's just really important that we all get paid as soon as possible for the work that we're doing
01:03today marks the first day that air traffic controllers have a completely different focus today
01:08their first loss of pay air traffic controllers are out moving over 45,000 flights today three
01:16million passengers tons of cargo that keeps America moving and their focus is now on when they'll receive
01:23pay again air traffic controllers are supposed to mitigate risk air traffic controllers ensure that
01:28risk is out of the system so that those who fly and those who we serve that they are safe and this
01:34brings a risk where their focus is now on when I get off my shift today do I have to go and drive
01:39uber tonight so that way I can put gas in the car or food on the table for my family so with that being
01:45said we're calling on the elected officials to end this shutdown air traffic controllers are not
01:49responsible for starting a shutdown and we're not responsible for ending shutdowns only our elected
01:54officials are and our elected officials need to end the shutdown today we have over 40 airlines and
02:0180,000 members we're here to stand in solidarity with nick and the air traffic controllers it's hard
02:06to believe that those that keep us safe and secure whether it's the air traffic controllers the tsa
02:12agents of security the safety inspectors these folks are working without a paycheck and they're expected
02:19to keep us safe and secure every day and in the traveling and shipping public this is crazy we send
02:25lawmakers to dc to do their jobs fund the government end the shutdown and get folks back to work get
02:33these folks paid before the shutdown air traffic controllers shortages drove about five percent of all
02:38flight delays now air traffic control staffing issues account for 53 percent of all delays in other
02:45words the shutdowns having an impact it's having an impact on flights on cancellations on delays and
02:51on families and of course people doing business it's affecting our economy look what we did in the middle
02:57east yesterday there's no reason why we can't solve this problem too first so i'm headed back to washington
