America’s air travel faces unprecedented disruption as the Trump administration orders a 10% cut in flights at 40 major U.S. airports amid the record-breaking government shutdown. With over 13,000 air traffic controllers and 50,000 TSA agents working without pay, the move aims to relieve mounting fatigue among staff while escalating pressure on Congress to end the standoff. The cuts could ground as many as 1,800 flights and eliminate over 268,000 airline seats, hitting major hubs in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Dallas. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said the administration’s priority remains air safety — even if it means massive nationwide travel chaos.

00:00Good afternoon. I'm here with the administrator of the FAA, Brian Bedford. I appreciate
00:14there'll be frustration. We are working with the airlines. They're going to work with passengers,
00:20but in the end, our sole role is to make sure that we keep this airspace as safe as possible.
00:26The administrator is going to talk about all of the tools we're going to deploy. One of them,
00:33though, is going to be that there is going to be a 10 percent reduction in capacity at 40 of our
00:39locations. The administrator is going to tell you that this is data-based. This is not based on what
00:46airline travels, has more flights out of what location. This is about where is the pressure
00:52and how do we alleviate the pressure? But we do recognize that the controllers have been working
00:58fastidiously for the last five weeks with this huge burden over their head of lack of compensation,
01:05and we are starting to see some evidence that that fatigue is building in the system in ways that we
01:11feel we need to work towards relieving some of that pressure. So again, as the secretary said,
01:18we've identified 40 high-traffic environment markets. We'll be happy to share that later.
01:24We have decided that a 10 percent reduction in scheduled capacity would be appropriate to,
01:29again, continue to take the pressure off of our controllers. And as we continue to see staffing
01:36triggers, there will be additional measures that will be taken in those specific markets.
01:40We, I'm concerned about disrupting people's travel. We're coming into a weekend. Uh, that doesn't,
01:46listen, I, I, I travel, I travel a lot. We are concerned about that, but we had to have a gut
01:53check of what is our job? Is it to make sure there's, you know, minimal delays or minimal cancellations,
01:59or is our job to make sure we make the hard decisions to continue to keep the airspace safe?
02:10We have to do this or do that or try to change some stuff because you're so worried that it won't
02:36do that scenario. That is going to be a lie.
02:39We have to do that.
03:09Thank you so much for joining us.
