00:00The first day of the U.S. federal government shutdown on Wednesday saw many public facilities
00:07being closed, and much of its operations and services halted until further notice across
00:13the country.
00:14This comes after the Senate failed to pass a spending bill for federal agencies until
00:19November 21, with the Republican Party having not enough of seven Democratic votes or 60
00:25votes in the 100-seat Senate, which is controlled by Republicans.
00:29This is the first shutdown in nearly seven years, and there is no indication of a clear
00:34path to break the impasse.
00:36Unfortunately, we are here this morning in a government shutdown that Democrats wanted.
00:44Chuck Schumer, at the behest of a bunch of liberal, far-left activist groups, has walked his Democrat
00:53colleagues into a boxed canyon.
00:56There's no way out, folks.
00:58This could have been avoided.
00:59It's not about who wins or who loses or who gets blamed in all this.
01:03It's about the American people.
01:04And they have taken the American people hostage in a way that they think benefits them politically.
01:11They have majorities in the House and in the Senate, and this is what they do with the
01:15power that they have.
01:15They do not know how to govern, and the result of it is that when they fail to govern and
01:22they have now wrecked our economy, the next action that they take is to shut down the government.
01:27Vice President J.D. Vance warned the shutdown could soon lead to layoffs.
01:32It's not going to be perfect because we are in a government shutdown. We are going to have
01:36to lay some people off if the shutdown continues. We don't like that. We don't necessarily want
01:41to do it. But we're going to do what we have to to keep the American people's essential
01:44services continuing to run.
01:47The previous and longest shutdown occurred in late 2018 during President Donald Trump's
01:53first term, lasting 35 days amid disputes over border wall funding and immigration.
