00:00Silicon Valley is an exciting place, but success in the tech world can change an individual.
00:15For some people, it changes your mindset. It makes you think that you're invincible.
00:21Some people think that the rules do not pertain to them, and sometimes they think they can get
00:26away with anything, even murder. Sergeant Sandra Brown, Palo Alto Police Department. I spent my
00:33career investigating major crimes in Silicon Valley, like the case of Scott Davis. He was a pretty
00:40successful guy, building a prosperous career in the tech industry. But Scott Davis always wanted to
00:47be involved in the political arena. I would have never thought that he would run for governor,
00:53but that's what he did. And everything came out. One of his neighbors was found murdered.
01:04It's something that I had never seen before in my life. Fire was so hot, his ankle was like a lump of
01:12coal. Is it possible that a tech bro such as Scott Davis could be involved in a murder?
01:19There's certain things people choose when they're telling a lie. They can't stop. They can't stop.
01:25They can't keep you doing it. Well, you're wrong.
01:29Palo Alto is right smack dab in the middle of Silicon Valley.
01:53Actually, Palo Alto is really the birthplace of Silicon Valley.
02:04Two blocks from City Hall is the garage where Hewlett and Packard started.
02:11Their headquarters is still there. And over the years, so many tech companies in Silicon Valley
02:18call Palo Alto their home. You're talking about Pinterest. You're talking about Tesla. You're
02:24talking about Facebook. There's just so many companies. And those owners of those companies
02:32choose to live in Palo Alto as well. Mark Zuckerberg and his wife live in Palo Alto.
02:39And Steve Jobs of Apple resided in Palo Alto as well. Another person who lived there in the late
02:5290s or early 2000s was a tech bro named Scott Davis. He was a pretty successful guy. He was a software
03:01consultant building a prosperous career. He was a founder and CEO of his own company,
03:08Valero Solutions. Before Valero Solutions, he was also a consultant in Silicon Valley. He worked
03:14with big companies such as Dell Computers. Now, he was new to Silicon Valley. He was from Atlanta.
03:23He grew up in a very prominent family. Scott Davis's father was a forensic psychologist. He was well
03:33known for helping the police department, profile murderers and stuff like that. He is well-respected,
03:40well-connected. But at the time, everybody was coming to Palo Alto. It was the place to be
03:49for anyone who is a major player in the tech industry. So in 1998, Scott Davis packed his bags and moved to
04:00Palo Alto. And he was very successful in Silicon Valley.
04:04But in 2003, California was going through a lot of issues. And a lot of that was being blamed on the
04:17current governor, Gray Davis. In California, you can recall your governor if you want to. And so they
04:26had the recall re-election. Several people were getting involved in the recall and running for
04:33governor in California. Ultimately, there were 135 candidates running for governor,
04:39which is unheard of. Basically, anybody who wanted to put in could have.
04:44So this 2003 governor's recall race had some crazy candidates. We had a porn star put in.
04:54Actor Gary Coleman put in for it. And then, of course, Arnold Schwarzenegger put in.
04:59There's a leadership vacuum pretty much like in California right now.
05:06One of the lesser known candidates in this 135 was Scott Davis.
05:11He was always an ambitious guy. So he jumped into general primary in 2003 to run for governor.
05:21Scott Davis always wanted to be involved in the political arena.
05:25Before he came to Palo Alto, he ran for a position as home state of county commissioner.
05:30When he came into California, those political ideas were still with him.
05:35He was running as an independent, but he was pro-business. He was fiscally conservative,
05:41and he really thought that he could solve the budget crisis in California.
05:46He's a promising young candidate. He had a lot of support, and people were backing him for it.
05:51A San Jose Mercury News reporter starts looking into the backgrounds of several of the candidates,
06:02and they find something very interesting with Scott Davis.
06:06The Mercury News reporter discovers that Scott Davis had been arrested for a murder in Atlanta in 1996.
06:12It turns out that in Georgia, in his old hometown, one of his neighbors was found murdered.
06:24It appears that Scott Davis and his murdered neighbor had some sort of history,
06:28and people in Georgia felt that he was connected to this murder.
06:32The reporter calls him out on it, which really threw a wrench in Scott Davis's bid for governor of California.
06:42He did speak to the reporter. He told the reporter,
06:45yeah, but you know, that happened a long time ago, and it wasn't me, and they threw the case out.
06:51And if they had a case, they would have kept me, but they let me go,
06:54because they didn't have any evidence that I was involved in any crime, so they dropped the case and let me go.
06:58So don't worry about it. It's not that big of a deal.
07:05This is a juicy story, right?
07:07This is a tech bro running for governor who was arrested years ago for murder.
07:11He's here now in California. He's doing well in Silicon Valley.
07:15Don't think media is just going to let that go.
07:17When we talk about Silicon Valley and these so-called tech bros,
07:21there has always been some suspicion that maybe these people didn't make their money the right way.
07:28And people that live in California deserve to know the truth of a person who is going to
07:33make decisions for them in the future if they win the governorship.
07:40So even though Scott Davis had come out publicly and said, I had nothing to do with this,
07:45the Mercury News reporter went a little bit deeper and ended up talking to the DA in Atlanta.
07:50And what the reporter was told was, we're still investigating this case.
07:58Not only is Scott Davis a suspect in this case, Scott Davis is our number one suspect.
08:05So the reporter starts to dig into the 1996 case.
08:09And what he finds is very disconcerting.
08:25You all right?
08:26All right, let's go.
08:27On December 10th, 1996, firefighters were called to a house fire in Buckhead,
08:35in a very affluent community in Atlanta.
08:39And when firefighters arrived, there are flames everywhere.
08:41Let's see if we get around back with this thing.
08:43Good luck.
08:43Over the fence.
08:44This very nice house is burning quickly.
08:48It looks like arson.
08:49And when we get there, the fire department's already there.
08:52They put the fire out, but the fire department had a lot of cleanup to do.
08:58The police department has to wait till the fire department finish that thing and go up in there.
09:08So once the fire is down, the firefighters went in.
09:13That's when one of the firefighters stepped on a charred body.
09:17The victim's body was burned to almost non-recognition.
09:24When we found the body, the body was laying on his back.
09:30It was just unusual.
09:31From my experience working with the fire department, we either find persons who have passed away from
09:37smoke inhalation in their beds, or we have found bodies where they're crawling out because smoke rises,
09:43heat rises, so you want to stay close to the ground.
09:46And so we would find bodies that succumb to the fire and the heat and the smoke on their stomachs.
09:51There's nobody who's trying to escape out of a burning home on their back.
09:59There was a retired homicide officer, a detective there, who is now the ME's office.
10:06And he said, I want to bet you there's going to be a weapon or something under here.
10:12And true enough, as we got through with everything, digging anything out,
10:18there was a burnt nine-millimeter handgun under there, under the body.
10:24You got a dead body here that's laying on his back.
10:27You got a weapon that's under there that's burnt.
10:29Those were the reasons that we knew it was a homicide.
10:34Whoever started that fire started it right there where that body was at.
10:38Evidence now is going to be destroyed because of the fire.
10:41And that's what the person who said the fire wanted to do.
10:52Unfortunately for Scott Davis, a Silicon Valley reporter has uncovered his ties to an old Atlanta homicide.
11:00And that spells bad news for his run for governor.
11:10It's something that I had never seen before in my life in the homicide where the fire was so hot,
11:17his ankle was like a lump of coal, which really was, you know, was really hard, you know, for me.
11:24After the fires put out, the police went and talked to some of the neighbors.
11:34They discover that the home is owned by 41-year-old David Coffin.
11:41He was a trust fund guy from Connecticut.
11:45The Coffin family, they're a longtime wealthy family who had a chemical company that goes back eons.
11:54David Coffin is heir to the Dexter Corporation, his family-owned company.
12:03They were the oldest company on the New York Stock Exchange.
12:09He was kind of living the life here in Atlanta. He'd come down here to invest in businesses.
12:17He didn't work most of the time.
12:20David never acted like he spent a lot of money,
12:22but he wanted everything. He just loved toys, and most of his toys were expensive toys.
12:29He had a Porsche and a boat, but he was always pretty down-to-earth.
12:36He was funny. We just had a good time.
12:40But that night, I was driving down I-75, and I heard on the news that this house was on fire.
12:50I looked over and saw the smoke coming up from that area, and I just knew it was David. I just knew it.
12:57And I drove immediately to the house, and the fire trucks were there.
13:03Everybody was there, and the yellow tape was up.
13:05I was just in shock. I couldn't believe it.
13:10Another person out front in front of his home was the woman that David Coffin was dating, Megan Lee.
13:20But now, obviously, this is her boyfriend. She's very upset.
13:23Megan was trying to reach him all day and couldn't get him on the phone, which is, you know, kind of unusual.
13:31Another unusual thing happened.
13:33Not long after detectives arrived to David Coffin's house,
13:36the investigators get a call that there's another fire about a mile away.
13:40I would probably look at my partner and go, what the heck is going on?
13:44Because that's very unusual.
13:45And we have another fire down the street a mile away? Very odd.
13:49The investigators from David Coffin's house race over to this other house.
13:55And when they arrive, the homeowner is putting the flames out with a water hose.
14:01And the owner of the home is Scott Davis, seven years before he moved to Silicon Valley.
14:10Scott Davis tells them, I was in bed. I heard a noise. I look out my window.
14:16I see that the back of my house is on fire. So I grab my shotgun and I run outside.
14:23And I see this guy running away. He goes to the fence. He's getting ready to climb over.
14:28And as I'm going towards him, he pulls a gun out.
14:30I see a flash and I hear a bang and he's shooting at me.
14:33So I pulled my shotgun up and I shot at him five times.
14:38But he gets over the fence and gets away.
14:40And he's telling the investigators, this wasn't my first encounter with this guy.
14:45Davis had called the police earlier that night to say that a man had attacked him at his house,
14:51and maced him, and put a gun to his head and told him to stay away from Megan.
14:58And this is where the case takes a crazy turn.
15:02Scott Davis informs them that David Coffin's girlfriend, Megan Lee, is also his wife.
15:08Scott Davis tells them we're going through divorce, but she is still married to me.
15:18So investigators now have these two cases, and they're very similar.
15:22We have David Coffin and Scott Davis, not far from each other, and both their homes were on fire.
15:28These two cases have one common denominator.
15:35And that common denominator is Megan Lee.
15:38In 2003, Scott Davis is trying to put to rest the rumors of him being involved in the murder of David Coffin in Georgia.
15:57But a reporter seeing this case is biting at the lion.
16:01I don't blame him.
16:02This is a juicy story.
16:05Is it possible that a tech bro such as Scott Davis could be involved in a murder?
16:12On the night of the fire at Scott Davis' house, he told police he was involved in a shootout.
16:21He said there was some strange guy in his backyard, and he escaped over a fence.
16:27And he also informed the police that he had an encounter with that same strange suspect earlier in the day.
16:34They said he was maced.
16:37They became suspicious with this story because it was so strange.
16:43With all of this information, investigators know they need to have a chat with Megan Lee.
16:51Scott Davis' estranged wife who was also dating David Coffin.
17:01We got Megan to come down to the homicide office to do a statement.
17:06Megan informed investigators that she and Scott Davis had met at the University of Georgia and dated for about five years.
17:15And towards the end of that five years, they got married.
17:19And they were married for two years before they ended their relationship.
17:25Scott had a kind of a turbulent relationship with his wife, and she had filed for divorce on him a couple of months before the murder of David Coffin.
17:40Investigators ask her, what is your relationship, and how did that start with David Coffin?
17:45She tells them a friend of both of theirs introduced her to David Coffin.
17:50And even though she's still technically married, she is going through divorce, she hit it off with David Coffin.
17:57This guy was attractive, friendly, he was a lot of fun.
18:01And over a bit of time, their relationship started to become a little bit more serious.
18:08But during this divorce process, Scott Davis was trying to get back with Megan Lee.
18:14She claims that Scott was pretty insistent on having her back.
18:17And I had warned her, if she entered into an intimate relationship with another man, that would be crossing a line that she shouldn't cross.
18:26Particularly if it was David, who apparently he was aware that she was spending some time with.
18:34According to Megan, Scott Davis started calling her all the time.
18:37Megan told the police that Scott was leaving her messages, such as, you're killing me, how can you do this to me?
18:45Don't do it, come back to me.
18:49Megan Lee also tells investigators about something really weird that happened recently.
18:54Shortly before the killing, David Coffin spends the weekend with Megan.
18:59And he returns to his house.
19:02He finds his house has been trashed.
19:04His home was broken into.
19:06And there was damage done to his living room.
19:08The TV was destroyed.
19:10Just ransacked.
19:11His house was ransacked.
19:12A few days before David was killed, we went out to dinner.
19:19And he was just telling me that he was uptight.
19:24And he was real worried about what was going on.
19:28He was scared.
19:29He was frightened.
19:29You have Megan Lee between David Coffin and Scott Davis.
19:37This is a triangle.
19:39Is it possible that Megan Lee is the motive for this crime?
19:46So they start looking a little closer at Scott Davis as a suspect.
19:54At that point, we say, we need to ask him a little bit more questions.
19:58So I said, look, what we need to do now, let's get a statement, get him on tape.
20:05What's the name of Megan, and David is a big clone?
20:13I don't know.
20:14I know she's going out.
20:16But for all I know, I wouldn't even know if she wanted to.
20:19I'd rather, yeah.
20:20Y'all trying to keep her together.
20:24The truth.
20:25I don't think.
20:27I think she, I mean, I don't think that I see her.
20:30I don't think she's about to fall in the middle of the country.
20:31So the investigators start to press Scott Davis, right?
20:44And he's getting a little uncomfortable.
20:59He starts getting defensive.
21:02And he's like, why are you asking me this?
21:03If I had nothing to do with this, I didn't shoot David Coffin.
21:11At that time, the police haven't actually verified his cause of death.
21:17So now the investigators are looking at each other,
21:20because the only person who would know if David Coffin had been shot would be the killer.
21:25So they ask him about that.
21:27All of a sudden, during his conversation with the police,
21:42Scott Davis tells the police that Megan Lee called him and told him that David Coffin had been shot and then his house was set on fire.
22:20Who had been, she says, calling her relentlessly.
22:23I don't know if there's a good explanation for that.
22:25I think she says that she was in shock over David's death and, you know, emotionally traumatized at that time.
22:31But Megan told the police that, no, she didn't tell Scott that.
22:36You have two stories coming from two people that are involved in this case.
22:41And one person says, she told me, the other person says, I didn't.
22:46Between Megan and Scott Davis, their stories are not lining up.
22:51So police do a little bit more investigation.
22:56She's involved in a romantic relationship with David Coffin.
22:59You know, frankly, I mean, romantic partners are always suspects.
23:03David Coffin, he's like a little playboy.
23:06He's handsome.
23:07Women are just, you know, very interested in him.
23:10He's a millionaire.
23:12Is Megan the only married woman that he's seen?
23:14Could there have been some other suspicious situation?
23:16Could Megan have gotten very jealous about that?
23:20Could she have killed David Coffin for that?
23:23It's a possibility.
23:27Maybe Scott Davis is innocent.
23:30That's what he's telling the Silicon Valley reporters who's looking at that old case.
23:35Maybe Megan is to blame for it all.
23:38Scott Davis adamantly maintains his innocence to the Bay Area press, dredging up his ties to the David Coffin murder case.
23:52He's pointing his finger at his ex-wife, Megan, and sticking to his story that it was her who told him that David had been shot.
24:01But Megan claims she did not tell Scott Davis that David Coffin had been shot.
24:07You have to wonder, who's telling the truth here?
24:12We don't rule nobody out, to be honest with you.
24:15But her and David Coffin, we're lovers.
24:19What could he have said to her to make her want to kill her?
24:22Nothing that I know of.
24:24She had no reason.
24:27Scott Davis, on the other hand, he's heartbroken.
24:33He's unhappy.
24:34He's unhappy.
24:37We got phone records and stuff.
24:42So we knew that he was calling Megan back and forth.
24:45And all the stuff that Megan was saying was true.
24:50Megan, please pick up the phone.
24:52I need to talk to you about this stuff.
24:55Megan, I'm in my room now.
24:56Will you please pick up the phone?
24:58Come on, please, Megan.
25:00Come on, I'm not trying to be me.
25:03I just want to talk to you.
25:05He's harassing her.
25:08He can't let go.
25:10And he's trying all he can to get her back.
25:13So, he was still our number one suspect.
25:18Okay, son.
25:19I've been doing it for a lot of years.
25:21There's certain things people do when they're telling a lie.
25:24They can't stop.
25:25They can't stop.
25:26They can't keep from doing it.
25:28Well, you're wrong.
25:30So, I don't know what they say.
25:31They can't keep from doing it.
25:32Well, you're wrong.
25:33He had a very cocky attitude.
25:36You know, he's number one.
25:38That's just, he was used to having his way and getting what he wanted.
25:43Scott said during the interview that he didn't shoot David Coffin.
25:49When the cause of death of David Coffin was not known.
25:56When the autopsy report came back, it showed that David Coffin did die from a gunshot wound, and not just because of the fire.
26:04They take the position that, going to kill her, would have known the cause of death, wouldn't have been determined yet.
26:11And that was enough for the detective to believe that he had a case to arrest Scott for murder.
26:20I felt so bad for his family and the Coffin family.
26:25I just, I really did not know what to think, but I was glad that he got arrested.
26:31I felt like they had gotten the right person.
26:35Scott Davis' father was insistent on his son's innocence.
26:39The police felt they had a strong case.
26:42But the only evidence they really have is that self-increditing statement.
26:46And the district attorney at that time was newly elected.
26:50He takes a look at the case, and he does not think they have enough to go forward.
26:54And then after several months of not indicting him, the DA at that time says they're still looking for evidence.
27:04A year later, they're still looking for evidence, and they finally dismiss the case.
27:08It was shocking when they dropped the charges.
27:13And everybody that I know couldn't believe it.
27:16But then he just left out.
27:22That's when Scott moves to Palo Alto in California.
27:26He becomes a consultant in the tech industry out there.
27:29That's where he started his own company, Valero Solutions.
27:33And he was very successful with his business.
27:37So now it's 2003, and Scott Davis decides, I'm going to run for governor.
27:42When Scott runs for governor, he puts himself back in the news.
27:46I would have never thought that he would run for governor.
27:51Here it is, you'd have been shipped from Atlanta to California.
27:57And all you got to do is just be quiet.
27:59You're away from everybody else.
28:01But no, I'm the man.
28:03I can do what I want to do.
28:06Other news outlets in Silicon Valley started to pick up this story.
28:11They're getting into the business of this homicide.
28:17Even though Scott Davis maintains his innocence,
28:21because of the media, Scott Davis says he can't focus
28:24on the important issues for his run for governor.
28:28So he pulls his name from the ballot for governor of California.
28:35David Coffin Sr., the father of the victim,
28:39was a wealthy man.
28:40He was very prominent.
28:41He was very insistent on finding justice for his son.
28:46I'm sure when you hear Scott Davis is running for governor
28:49in this jungle primary, I would guess it annoyed him.
28:53If I was David Coffin's father, I would be infuriated
28:56that this is what this guy is doing now.
28:58And I'm sure I'd be on the phone to the district attorney's office.
29:02The district attorney in Atlanta starts a cold case squad in 2004,
29:11shortly after, you know, Scott Davis has dropped out of the
29:15gubernatorial race in California.
29:17And the Scott Davis case is one they take a look at.
29:22Whether the two have any linked or not, I don't know.
29:24But I can say it did not help him to run for governor in California.
29:27This cold case task force, they feel that Scott Davis got away with murder.
29:35They think he needs to be in prison.
29:37He needs to go to jail for this murder.
29:39He's not going to get away with it.
29:40They decide to try and get more incriminating evidence against Scott Davis.
29:49The cold case squad goes to California,
29:51and they get a court order for a wiretap.
29:56Because Scott Davis lives in the Palo Alto jurisdiction,
30:00Palo Alto investigators, along with the Atlanta investigators,
30:03get involved into this task force,
30:05and they're going to do a wiretap on Scott Davis.
30:08And they come up with a game plan.
30:11The Fulton County District Attorney's Office,
30:12in which Atlanta is under jurisdiction of,
30:15by Mr. Paul Howard,
30:18is scheduled a press conference tomorrow for 2 p.m. Eastern Standard Time
30:20in Atlanta, Georgia, regarding new development in the case.
30:24They're going to put out some false information.
30:27They're going to do a news conference
30:28saying that they found some new evidence
30:31to push this guy to make a confession somehow to somebody.
30:35If anybody has any information regarding Scott Davis' involvement in this case,
30:38please contact Palo Alto, police detective Natasha Powers.
30:42We had said some DNA through new types of testing was found
30:47on the weapon that was found at the scene,
30:50knowing that it was not accurate,
30:52but using it intentionally to hopefully cause Scott Winfield Davis
30:56to make some comments over the phone regarding that information.
31:01It's called tickling the wire.
31:03We set the information in place
31:06to motivate Scott Winfield Davis
31:08to start making some phone calls
31:09about the particular case.
31:11So, did he?
31:13He did.
31:14He made a couple calls
31:15wondering what did Atlanta actually have?
31:18What did the DA's office actually have?
31:21But the wiretap was authorized
31:22for a total of 30 days,
31:25and we never got any kind of direct confession
31:27over the telephone line or the wire.
31:30They don't get Scott Davis saying anything
31:33that would incriminate him
31:34in the murder of David Coffin.
31:38But this cold case task force
31:41would not give up.
31:43Police did a little bit more digging in,
31:44a little bit more investigation,
31:46and they found out
31:47that Scott Davis had hired
31:49this private investigator to track Megan.
31:52During the divorce process
31:54back in 1996,
31:56so the investigator gave Scott Davis
32:01David Coffin's home address
32:03a couple of days before the fire.
32:07And that's important to note,
32:09that if police knew that back in 1996,
32:13I think the DA would have filed on that.
32:16The district attorney in Atlanta
32:17feels more confident in the case now,
32:20nine years later.
32:22So the district attorney decides
32:24this is a case we can win now.
32:28I got a phone call from Atlanta.
32:31They said, we've got the warrant.
32:36It's time to arrest him.
32:46With the information that Scott Davis had hired,
32:49this private investigator to track Megan,
32:51the DA now feels
32:53she has enough information
32:54to take this case to trial.
32:56So November 18, 2005,
32:59the investigators in Palo Alto
33:01served an arrest warrant
33:02for Scott Davis.
33:06Initially, the captain at the time
33:08wanted it to be a SWAT call-out
33:10because he was a known murder suspect.
33:12And I negotiated with the SWAT commander
33:16at the time, the captain.
33:18I said, if we can get him out of the house,
33:21let us do it.
33:23So we came up with a plan.
33:25We took two other detectives,
33:28one of them who spoke Spanish.
33:30And we had the other detective
33:32drive my old great Toyota Camry
33:35up to the light pole
33:37that happened to be right in front
33:38of his front door on the street
33:40as if she were in a car accident.
33:42Okay.
33:42So we had her slumped over the wheel
33:44with the horn going.
33:49And the other,
33:50the Spanish-speaking detective,
33:51ran up to the front door
33:52and started pounding on the door,
33:55screaming,
33:56help me in Spanish,
33:59or ayude me, ayude me.
34:04And she's pointing to the car
34:07that the other detective is in,
34:09slumped over the wheel.
34:11And the door opens up.
34:17And there's Scott Davis.
34:20He steps out of the threshold
34:22of the front door,
34:23takes a couple steps out,
34:25and we grab him up
34:26and put the handcuffs on.
34:31They arrest Scott Davis
34:33and Paolo Alto
34:34and bring him back to stand trial.
34:35I think he comes back
34:40feeling reasonably confident
34:42that he may be able
34:44to win an acquittal
34:45because the evidence against him
34:47appears to be
34:48basically the same as before.
34:50But the prosecutor in that case
34:52is Sheila Ross,
34:54who, as I remember,
34:55was a pit bull of a prosecutor
34:57who I'm sure
34:58was as outraged
35:00as the Coffin family
35:02that Scott Davis
35:03seemingly got away with murder.
35:05She would argue this case
35:06well to the jury
35:07that this is the guy
35:09that did it.
35:09This is all that makes sense.
35:10The prosecutor's theory
35:12is that Scott Davis
35:14was very angry
35:15that Megan
35:16was seeing David Coffin.
35:19And the weekend
35:19that David Coffin spent
35:20at Megan Lee's house,
35:22this is when it started
35:23to escalate.
35:24He called her relentlessly
35:26that weekend.
35:27I don't know
35:27if it was a dozen times
35:28or two dozen times,
35:29but left him
35:30a bunch of messages
35:31on her machine.
35:33She wouldn't answer.
35:34So they theorize
35:36that Scott Davis
35:38goes over to her house.
35:39And when he goes over there,
35:40he probably looks
35:41through the window
35:42and he sees David Coffin
35:43over there,
35:43which really pisses him off.
35:45So he leaves there.
35:49According to law enforcement,
35:51he goes to David Coffin's house
35:52and he ransacks
35:53the living room.
35:56But that wasn't enough for him.
35:58The police believe
35:59that he came back
36:00on Monday night.
36:03Megan was what he wanted.
36:05He couldn't have it
36:05because she was
36:07with David Coffin.
36:13I'm mad.
36:16What do you do?
36:18I came back.
36:20I brought a gun back.
36:21And David Coffin
36:23and said,
36:24oh, hell no.
36:26You're not going
36:27to do me like this.
36:28We're going to fight.
36:30Now they're fighting.
36:32Well,
36:33Scott wins the battle.
36:40He used to win it.
36:41He shot it.
36:42The prosecution
36:43theorizes
36:45that Scott Davis
36:46left his body
36:47and left the house.
36:51The next day,
36:52Scott Davis
36:53gets a little nervous
36:54and he goes back
36:55to the house
36:55the next night
36:55and sets the house on fire
36:57trying to cover up
36:58his tracks.
37:00The reason they think
37:01he murdered him on Monday
37:02and then came back
37:03on Tuesday
37:04is because on Tuesday,
37:06Davis had called
37:07the police earlier
37:08to say that a man
37:09had attacked him
37:10at his house
37:11before neighbors
37:12of David Coffin Jr.
37:15report that his house
37:16is ablaze.
37:19The prosecutor
37:20is the one
37:21that has the burden
37:21of proof.
37:22But what they have
37:23is Megan Lee.
37:26She is the number one
37:27witness for the prosecutor.
37:30Megan Lee
37:31now lives
37:31in Australia.
37:33She didn't feel safe
37:34with Scott Davis
37:36back out on the street
37:37to the point
37:38where she was afraid
37:39to even be
37:40in the same country.
37:41and she voluntarily
37:42agrees to fly back
37:44to Atlanta.
37:45During the trial,
37:46she was very emotional.
37:48She was very real.
37:49She was very raw.
37:51I had no idea
37:53what was going to happen
37:55two days
37:56or three days later.
37:58The case went to trial
38:00and largely
38:01on the same evidence
38:01as they would have had
38:02in 1997 or 1998.
38:05But they had also
38:08since then
38:09located information
38:10that he had
38:10tracked down
38:11where David Coffin lived
38:13through the use
38:14of a private investigator.
38:16And you listen
38:17to all the messages
38:18that he had left
38:19for Megan.
38:20that pointed to Scott
38:30being totally absorbed
38:32with the relationship
38:33that Coffin had
38:34with his wife.
38:36Ultimately,
38:37it was enough evidence
38:38to convince the jury.
38:39after all is said
38:42and done,
38:43Scott Davis
38:44is convicted
38:45of murdering
38:46David Coffin
38:47and he is sentenced
38:49to life in prison.
38:50The story was always
38:53pretty mysterious
38:54and in some ways
38:55it's really simple.
38:56You know,
38:57a guy's wife has left him.
38:58He wants her back.
38:59He gets jealous
39:00that she's seeing someone else.
39:02He thinks that's totally wrong
39:03and they're not
39:04actually divorced yet.
39:06He's still trying
39:06to win her back
39:07and then he starts
39:09on a campaign
39:10of intimidation
39:11to the new suitor
39:13before he decides
39:16just to kill him.
39:17We had circumstances
39:19and that's all we had.
39:20We didn't have
39:21an eyewitness
39:22or anything
39:22but all the things
39:24that came up
39:25Scott Davis
39:26gave us these things.
39:28No one knew
39:29that David Coffin
39:30had been shot
39:30but that answer
39:31came from Scott Davis
39:33that he had been shot.
39:36If Scott Davis
39:37would have shed
39:37his mouth up
39:38we'd be still
39:40working on that today.
39:42He was the one
39:43who sealed his fate.
39:47According to law enforcement
39:49he created all
39:51of these crimes
39:52to set it up
39:52to make it look
39:53like he was a victim
39:54as well as David Coffin.
39:56He didn't have
39:56to do any of that.
39:58This guy had a big mouth
39:59and he got away
40:01with murder
40:01and all he had to do
40:03was just come to California
40:04and do his job
40:05as an entrepreneur
40:07in Silicon Valley.
40:09But Scott Davis
40:10decides I'm going
40:11to run for governor.
40:12I mean to me
40:14who do you think
40:15you are?
40:16And sometimes
40:17in Silicon Valley
40:18people think
40:19that they are better
40:20than everybody else
40:21and I really believe
40:22that Scott Davis
40:23thought he could
40:23get away with this.
40:25He just kept going
40:25and kept going
40:26and kept going
40:26until he got caught
40:27and that's good
40:28for the Coffin family
40:29because he's
40:31a convicted murderer now.
40:36David was great.
40:38It all comes back
40:39it's been a long time
40:40but it all comes back
40:41every now and then.
40:43I just you know
40:44I really miss him
40:46because we did have
40:47a great time together
40:48and I think eventually
40:50he would have made
40:51a good father
40:52but things just didn't
40:55work out that way
40:56unfortunately.
