00:00There was a big age gap there.
00:09He used to take her around all the adventure playgrounds for the smaller kids.
00:15He was pretty good with her, to be honest.
00:18And her first clear word was Nathan.
00:26Is she safe?
00:28I didn't wish it, so I meant to know.
00:32Our main priority is to find Becky alive.
00:36The fingerprint in the blood.
00:38Have you hurt her?
00:39No, I haven't hurt her.
00:41Approaching the address.
00:42Hello, please.
00:45The fact that the bathroom was too clean.
00:51Purchase of face masks, gloves, cleaning products.
00:57Circular saw.
00:59Within the time frame, Mavecki going missing.
01:03It just all screamed something was wrong.
01:07Do you know if she's alive?
01:09No.
01:10No.
01:11No.
01:15Do you know they may be alone at 2km?
01:25So we're in the Barton Hill area of Bristol. It's probably about two miles from Becky's.
01:51We've got Nathan and Shauna living over there at Cotton Mill Lane, Nathan being Becky's
01:57step-brother and Shauna being Nathan's partner. Nathan and Shauna were both in custody, having
02:04been harassed in on suspicion of kidnapping.
02:10At Nathan and Shauna's house, we continued with the forensic search.
02:20Now we were looking on our hands and knees.
02:24We looked at the whole house and revealed two stun guns.
02:32We also found the circular saw. And the saw blade was clean.
02:45The saw was taken to pieces so we could get to places where blood could get, but you couldn't
02:52get to clean it. And Becky's blood was recovered from parts of the saw.
03:04During the interview process, Nathan is informed that there's a forensic search being carried
03:23out at his house in Cotton Mill Lane. He will know what is in that address and he will know
03:31what is very likely to have been fanged now and it's creating pressure on him.
03:38And he's thinking, what do I do now? Do I just come up with an explanation for that? Or he makes
03:46a decision that he just tells the truth.
04:01This interview is being recorded at Patchwood Police Station in Bristol.
04:07So Nathan provided a prepared statement through his solicitor during the interview.
04:18Very helpfully, we've been provided with a prepared written statement. And what we would
04:24like to do now, Nathan, is for that to be told on the interview recording.
04:30Do I have to actually listen to it? Can I put my fingers in my ears?
04:33Yep, I don't know, thank you.
04:39It stated, I, Nathan, Charles, Matthews, accept I am responsible for the death of Rebecca Watts.
04:54On the 19th of February, 2015, I attended Clown Hill, St. George, Bristol, with my girlfriend,
05:02Shauna Hoare.
05:03In my car, I had a large bag, a stun device, handcuffs, tape and mask.
05:11I had developed an idea to scare Rebecca by kidnapping her.
05:17A few minutes after arriving, Shauna said she wanted a cigarette and went into the garden.
05:27I went to the boot of my car, I took out a bag, went upstairs to the landing before knocking
05:33on Rebecca's door.
05:36She replied, what, or hello?
05:39And I said, can I see you a minute?
05:43I cannot be sure which order things happened, but I used the items I had to subdue Rebecca.
05:52During the short struggle, my mask slipped and Rebecca was able to see my face.
05:59This caused me to panic and I strangled her, while she was partially in the bag.
06:11The significant thing is he admits that he's responsible for her death.
06:18So, it was certain now that we were looking at a serious crime.
06:29We re-arrested Nathan and Shauna on suspicion of murder and they continued to be held in custody.
06:37Now, we had some concrete information that Becky was dead.
06:42We needed to find her.
06:47So, he was asked what he was able to tell us about where she was or where she might be.
06:58He revealed that she had been moved from Cotton Mill Lane to an address at Barton Court.
07:09We got a warrant to enter and search the premises.
07:20We came through the front, through the house, and then into the back garden.
07:27There was a shed just here.
07:31Nathan Matthews, they said he asked a couple of friends if they could do him a favour and store some stuff in their garden shed.
07:40He told them that it was a consignment of cannabis.
07:45I arranged for a forensic team to attend the scene and they started looking at the shed.
08:01It was full, very full.
08:05Items, property, suitcases, bags, just stuff.
08:12I gave the instruction that the bag that was closest to us should be opened in situ, so as we could ascertain what was in there.
08:26That bag was carefully opened and inside was a wrapper, but you could see what it was.
08:39It contained a body part.
08:41We found a head, a torso, arms and legs.
08:54Each of the body parts was wrapped extensively with cling film, masking any potential smell.
09:10And Sof and Matthews had killed her, taken her home, put her in a bathtub, and gone on this huge shopping spree for a body disposal kit.
09:25I find the fact he queried the price of this all so shocking.
09:38Not only are you going to buy something to dismember your stepsister,
09:44but then you don't even want to pay full price.
09:47Not any comprehension in his head of almost the enormity of what he has done, what he is doing.
10:04It's horrific that he'd even kill her, but the fact that he dismembered her beggars belief really.
10:17As you enter Cotton Mill Lane, you had Nathan and Shauna's house on the left,
10:24and two houses down on the opposite side of the road was where Luke was living with his mum and his dad.
10:31So Becky's boyfriend is living within eyesight of the place where she was dismembered.
10:41Crawl beyond belief.
10:47We arranged for a coffin to be brought
10:57so things could be removed from the scene with respect and dignity.
11:05In your home address with your family, that's where you should be able to be safe.
11:25And all that trust was breached.
11:28Back at the home where they last saw Becky alive, a heartbroken family came to pay their respect.
11:50Later, Becky's boyfriend did the same.
11:52After investing so much hope in finding her, they have been left devastated.
12:01It was such a shock.
12:04I'd been there from the beginning with them.
12:06And I don't believe you can cover a story like that well without getting some way involved.
12:14I was sat on a bed, rocking violently backwards and forwards, screaming.
12:22I wanted to kill him.
12:26I was just devastated.
12:32And you just went into shock.
12:35You could see it.
12:36I just couldn't accept it.
12:42I would have described him as a loving son.
12:47He's never lied to me.
12:50He's always been open and honest with me.
12:53You know, I loved him like he was my own son.
13:03I saw how hard it was for Angie, her son, having destroyed this life of the man she'd married and
13:12loved and a child that she'd also helped to bring up and loved herself.
13:18Darren had a lot of pressure from his side of the family, saying, you know,
13:22distance yourself from Angie.
13:23It's her son.
13:25And he was absolutely adamant.
13:27This is my wife.
13:29I love her and we're staying together.
13:30And I just remember being so struck by how strong they were as a couple.
13:39I don't know if I could do that, to be honest.
13:42I'd hope I could.
13:43But the idea of blame, when you come of loss of life and especially in such a horrific way,
13:49you know, the blame is the first place you go to.
13:52How they stuck together is a real testament to both of them.
13:58We was a little family unit, weren't we?
14:01Yeah.
14:01We'd be a little dysfunctional because we're all from, you know,
14:06your different parents and partners and that sort of thing.
14:09But, um, no, we all, we all linked together.
14:11We just quite a strong little unit.
14:14Which is why it was such a devastating shock that he'd done this.
14:19The school, we're doing an exam.
14:31And a teacher said,
14:39We found Becky's body.
14:45And then he said parts.
14:48Don't know why he said it like that.
14:50And then I just shut down really and the whole, the whole room went just silent.
15:00And everyone just started looking at me and then I just walked out.
15:03I didn't cry. I think I was numb, but I was angry.
15:13I was just feeling all these emotions and I didn't know how to deal with it.
15:17I found out my best friend's dead.
15:24And I just remember sitting there with my mum, just crying.
15:28Just, I felt very guilty in a sense that, in my head, I thought,
15:33if only that morning I'd gone round the house and just said,
15:36did you want to hang out?
15:38That might have stopped that hole from happening.
15:44But how can you do that to a member of your family?
15:48I couldn't do that to a stranger, let alone somebody I grew up with.
16:00Nathan's admitted to killing Becky.
16:02But what was really absent from that was why.
16:10Where's your motive? Why has this happened?
16:13Why has this 16-year-old girl lost her life?
16:22Nathan, can you give us your full name?
16:24Nathan Charles Matthews.
16:27So, Nathan, we've had a short break.
16:29Um, perhaps if I just flag up for the, um, recording what this interview's about.
16:35It's about the kidnap and murder of Becky Watts.
16:39Rather than simply take at face value the written statement that you have given to us
16:44last night, then we need to explore what you've told us some more.
16:49I don't know what questions need to ask, but...
16:57How about if we start with...
17:00..this idea you had about scaring Becky?
17:04Well, obviously, I came up with the idea to scare her.
17:08Because, like, she'd leave things out on the floor of my mum to trip over.
17:14And obviously, we'd talk to her, um...
17:18Like, say, nasty comments and talk to her like dirt on the floor.
17:22It's complete lies.
17:28Becky always took care of Angie.
17:33Angie has multiple sclerosis.
17:37So, Becky would always look out for her and help her whenever she needed it.
17:41So, tell me what you thought you were going to do.
17:46What your plan was.
17:49Obviously, stick her in the suitcase.
17:52Obviously, put tape around her mouth, so she wouldn't make any noise.
17:55The primers, obviously, once I got her in the car, I was thinking of, like, a wooded area.
18:03You know, say, somewhere along the lines of, you know, you've got to start treating people better.
18:08And then, like, make a threat of, um, you know, or, you know, or this could happen again or worse or something like that.
18:18Obviously, I thought if I was, you know, able to scare her.
18:25And, obviously, her not be harmed, obviously, be released.
18:29Obviously, when she got back,
18:30she obviously would have been scared and more appreciative of things, as people are.
18:44He said he wanted to scare her, so he came into the room wearing a mask,
18:49and he said the mask slipped, so he panicked and they strangled her.
18:55But he had tasers.
18:56You don't bring tasers, which are illegal in this country,
19:03to scare a 16-year-old girl when you yourself were, like, 28.
19:09Doesn't make any sense. She was really, like, slender.
19:13He would have been able to overpower her. He didn't need any of that.
19:16So it just didn't add up at all, what he was claiming happened.
19:21Was Becky stood up, Nathan, whilst you were strangling her?
19:24No comment.
19:26To what degree was she incapacitated then?
19:32No comment.
19:38Was she conscious at the time that you strangled her?
19:40No comment.
19:45Most people that get strangled get strangled with a ligature.
19:53The fact that he killed her with his own bare hands is rare.
19:57He will have seen her dying in front of his eyes.
20:00It was very personal.
20:02It appeared that Nathan went there with the intention of killing Becky,
20:08and that his version of events that it was an accident just wasn't plausible.
20:12We have to investigate this whole offence.
20:22And, of course, whilst you're being interviewed,
20:24Shauna is also being interviewed.
20:26I know Shauna's being interviewed.
20:27Yeah.
20:27I want to talk about Shauna.
20:28I'm sorry, you don't want to.
20:30Okay.
20:36We had Shauna, who is Nathan's girlfriend, in custody.
20:41I think people were wondering, well, where does Shauna Hall come into this?
20:48Has she just been arrested because she's the girlfriend?
20:51We know that she was at Becky's house when Nathan killed her.
20:59So, it was important to establish whether or not she played a role in Becky's death.
21:05Just so I'm clear, as far as the kidnap's concerned,
21:08you are not aware that Nathan was planning to do that on that day?
21:11No. Okay.
21:13I couldn't even look at him to think that he'd be like that.
21:20Even if he had those thoughts, let alone to actually carry them out.
21:24To know that, at any moment, I could walk down and think,
21:29I'm carrying his children. I didn't...
21:34To think that I would know.
21:40Sorry.
21:44Take a moment, that's right.
21:49Becky was so excited when she found out that Shauna was pregnant again.
21:53She was like, I'm going to be an aunt again.
21:55And I remember Nathan said to her at one point,
21:59you're never going to be an aunt to my child or something like that.
22:02But Shauna was always really nice to Becky.
22:04Because I suppose the thing is, from someone outside looking in,
22:10is that what he's saying is he's gone to the address with an intent to kidnap her.
22:15Okay.
22:15And it's been quite convenient that you're at the garden having a cigarette
22:20and he's doing what he's doing.
22:22Yes.
22:22Do you see what I mean?
22:23Yes.
22:25My mum said, you know, I've had a really bad night.
22:28Can I have a fag?
22:29Can I get to Angie's?
22:29He said, yes.
22:30And then he saw an opportunity.
22:31Mm-hm.
22:32Well, if he was planning it for months, I didn't...
22:36So, I don't know.
22:37At their home address, there were phones, laptops found in drawers,
22:54found in cupboards, found in the attic.
22:58And we would start going through these devices with a real microscope.
23:08First thing we noticed was patterns in Nathan's browsing pornography
23:14that was much more geared towards teenagers.
23:19There's a predisposition to sort of doing harm to teenage girls here.
23:26I remembered Nathan would make really morbid jokes
23:30about hitting Becky with a sledgehammer.
23:34And at the time, you don't think much of it.
23:36But you just think that's a dark sense of humour.
23:40But Becky would also tell me that he had anger issues.
23:45She told me that at one point when she was younger,
23:48he inappropriately touched her.
23:52And she had told me before that he threatened to kill her.
23:59But she just thought it's not a serious threat.
24:06When we're looking at all of the content on devices,
24:12we're getting a much clearer sense of Nathan and Shauna's relationship.
24:16We're seeing these messages where if Shauna bought a packet of cigarettes,
24:28he would then have them.
24:29And if she wanted one of them, she would have to ask.
24:32And he charged her a tenner.
24:33So it was definitely a weird power dynamic playing out.
24:42Sheuna was estranged from her mum and stepdad.
24:48Because her mum said that she didn't like the relationship with Nathan.
24:53Nathan commented a lot on her weights, sort of would control food,
24:58would control her money.
25:00I was quite paranoid about losing her.
25:02And the element of, almost like the victim, being controlled within the relationship.
25:23But then we came across another message between Nathan and Shauna.
25:32So the first message is 9th of 12, 2014, timed at 12.48.
25:43We've got Nathan to Shauna.
25:46Bring me back two pretty school girls then.
25:49Shauna replies.
25:51Yeah, I will just kidnap them from school.
25:58Tell me about that text message.
26:00No comment.
26:02They're talking about kidnapping a teenage girl.
26:13Almost in a light-hearted context, like it's a casual conversation.
26:22Next message is 9th of December, 2014, at 18.14.
26:26It says from Shauna.
26:28Just went to Cost Cutters and saw a very, in big caps, pretty petite girl.
26:37Almost knocked her out to bring her home.
26:39L-O-L.
26:40And there's crosses and zeros.
26:44Shauna, what can you tell me about that?
26:46No comment.
26:48Am I right in thinking that this girl was similar to Rebecca's age?
26:50No comment.
26:51No comment.
26:51Nathan's obvious fantasy around school girls was really abundantly clear from these messages.
27:08But what really stuck out as well was Shauna's knowledge of that and going with it.
27:12And the fact that she even suggests bringing back a school girl.
27:18And I think that was one of the key messages.
27:20This is something they've talked about before.
27:25And now they've acted on it.
27:29And now they've acted on it.
27:43Our inquiry suggested that, having killed Becky, they took her back to their house at Cotton Mill Lane.
27:49They put her in the bath.
27:58And then it would appear that they ordered a takeaway almost as if nothing had happened.
28:09On the day that Becky went missing, they've got web browsing history.
28:13And we found a parody of the Disney Frozen song.
28:21Will you help me hide a body?
28:24It doesn't have to be in one piece.
28:30Having taken Becky back to the house, put her in the bath, ordered their takeaway,
28:36there then sat there eating it.
28:40Watching clips on the internet of concealing bodies.
28:43You get the distinct impression that Shauna was directly involved in it.
28:50And how do we know you weren't involved in the killing of Becky?
28:53Because there would be no proof.
28:57I haven't touched anything or been anywhere near her alive or dead.
29:04We knew that Shauna was present in the house when Becky was killed.
29:15We know that she was present when Becky was removed from the house.
29:18And taken back to Cotton Mill Lane and taken back to Cotton Mill Lane.
29:22We know that she was sat watching videos about concealment of bodies.
29:27But most of that at the moment is circumstantial evidence.
29:30So we needed to build a case with more direct evidence against her.
29:35So we needed to build a case with more direct evidence.
29:37Rather than a mere presence.
29:52Back at the shed.
29:52Within the bags and suitcases were found some face masks.
30:02And they were sent to our forensic service provider.
30:06Where they were examined for DNA.
30:12On one of the face masks we found DNA that attributed to Nathan.
30:23And on one of the other face masks.
30:26We found Shauna's DNA.
30:38The fact that her DNA was on a face mask.
30:41Which was found with the body parts.
30:43Gave every indication that Shauna helped Nathan.
30:48We had sufficient evidence to charge both of them with murder.
31:11She always put herself across being very timid.
31:16Even loved her like a daughter didn't I?
31:18In the end.
31:22She was always polite and nice.
31:26Like just a normal person.
31:29You wouldn't think that somebody that seemed that way would be capable of this.
31:48I just remember this quiet.
32:03And just hearing the horses hooves coming down the street.
32:06The streets were packed with people throwing flowers.
32:14It was nice that all the community came together and they were so supportive and so kind.
32:23It affected a lot of people because they could see something of themselves or their children or their friends in Becky.
32:33And just her innocence and vulnerability.
32:39It was lots of tears.
32:39I mean everyone was crying.
32:41I don't mind saying I was crying too.
32:44It was everyone was in tears.
32:46I saw a little cough in there.
32:55It was just a shock.
32:59It started to really hit you then.
33:11It was a thrill.
33:12It fell in love.
33:17At the burial, they had this song on when she was being yet lowered into the ground.
33:24And the song got cut off.
33:26And I was like, she must have hated that one.
33:32I was like, she thinks that song's rubbish,
33:34put another one on.
33:41What had been taken away from me was, like, my best friend,
33:45someone that I had plans with for the future.
33:48We used to make jokes saying that we'll get one of those
33:51two-person mobility scooters when we're older.
33:54And it's like, I don't know how to explain it,
33:58but it feels like a part of me was taken away.
34:00Like, you lose your sense of navigation
34:03when somebody's life was so intertwined with yours
34:06is no longer there.
34:12Nathan and Sean needed to go to prison.
34:14They needed to pay for what they've done.
34:24The world was looking at Bristol Crown Court.
34:30Photographers, crews, reporters, journalists
34:34from every news outlet was there.
34:36We knew that Nathan Matthews had killed her.
34:48He admitted that.
34:49But what the prosecution were trying to show
34:51was this was a murderer.
34:52Someone who went out with a clear plan
34:57to go to Becky and kill her.
35:00However, Sean Hall said, not guilty to everything.
35:06The defense very much wanted you to believe
35:11that she was a completely innocent bystander.
35:15When Nathan Matthews stood on the witness stand,
35:29it was just so hard to imagine
35:34how Angie must have been feeling.
35:36Her son is stood there talking about killing her stepdaughter.
35:43And the dad of that daughter is there.
35:46He's your husband.
35:51Occasionally I'd glance over to see, like,
35:54do you even have any remorse or guilt about what you've done?
35:58But he'd never looked up at any point.
36:01He just kept saying, I didn't mean to kill her.
36:04Getting very emotional, crying a lot.
36:08And he was adamant that Shauna didn't know anything.
36:10She didn't see anything.
36:11She knew nothing.
36:12It was all him.
36:15Shauna kept to that story, saying,
36:18I had no idea this was going on.
36:21I didn't see anything.
36:22I have no part in this.
36:25But then, why is her DNA in that face mask?
36:28The defence very much painted a picture of Shauna
36:37as a very vulnerable young woman.
36:42We were told that Shauna had been fostered as a child.
36:47She was 14 when she met Nathan Matthews.
36:51He was 21.
36:54So there was a seven-year age gap.
36:58Was there this element of coercive control?
37:00We got to the end of the case, and the jury gets sent out.
37:15We knew Nathan Matthews had killed Becky.
37:25But the argument of the case was, was it murder?
37:33After three and a half hours, the jury came back.
37:37Everyone just suddenly runs back into court to hear what the jury had to say.
37:47And Nathan Matthews was found guilty of murder.
38:00The jury, the fact it came back within just a few hours,
38:04that showed how much they believed that this was a clear plan.
38:12He had gone to Becky's house with a kill kit.
38:16With stun guns, handcuffs, a mask, a suitcase.
38:23And then afterwards, a shopping spree to buy all of these things
38:29to get rid of her body.
38:30And Sean O'Haw was found guilty of manslaughter.
38:42The jury just didn't believe her story.
38:47When she said, I was having a cigarette while Nathan was killing Becky,
38:52I didn't see the body come down the stairs.
38:54I didn't see it in the car.
38:55I didn't hear him using a circular saw to dismember her.
39:00In our own small little house.
39:03It was laughable.
39:05No one believed that.
39:08I've done a lot of court cases.
39:16I've never known a judge to break down.
39:19His voice just broke and you could just tell the emotion had got to him.
39:26It just showed it affected everyone.
39:28Neither Matthews nor Haw has expressed any remorse for Becky's death.
39:36The hard work and meticulous attention of the prosecution team
39:40has ensured that they've been brought to justice for their crimes.
39:43I've got to really love this family.
39:55I spent the day with them and they took me up into her bedroom.
40:14That was quite a special moment.
40:16I've put her bedroom back together now so it's all how it was.
40:19Wasn't always as tidy as this, I can assure you.
40:21But yeah, this is how she likes it.
40:26He wanted to make sure that their daughter was remembered in the right way.
40:31It seems so quiet when I'm here now.
40:33You're really quiet.
40:35You've got a child like Becky, you're just used to noise.
40:38And then when it's not there, you really notice it.
40:43I want a drink ready.
40:44No, it's fine.
40:46Dad, don't. I'm taking half of this.
40:48I just miss her.
40:52I wish she was still here.
40:55I miss everything, even the arguments.
41:00Ten o'clock every night, I expect that door to come.
41:03The door to come through and say,
41:05Oh, it cooks for some tea, Dad.
41:07But it never does.
41:10It's ridiculous.
41:12And yet we still listen out for it.
41:14He made her a bench.
41:17Me and Courtney have been there together a couple of times.
41:20I usually go to Becky's grave as well.
41:24Every time that I have a milestone in my life, such as getting my driver's licence or going on holiday, it always makes me think that she never got to do these things.
41:30So it's quite bittersweet.
41:31Every milestone for me is something that she never got to do these things.
41:35Every milestone for me is something that she should be doing, too, and she's not.
41:36This is the first time that she never got to do these things.
41:38Every milestone for me is something that she should be doing, too, and she's not.
41:39This is ten years on.
41:40And they are the first time that she never got to do these things.
41:43Every milestone for me is something that she should be doing, too, and she's not.
41:48This is ten years on, and they are turning into adults now, you know?
41:49And this is something that will never leave them.
41:50It's part of their life forever, as it is part of my life.
41:51And I'm not sure that she's not getting her license or going on holiday.
41:52It always makes me think that she never got to do these things.
41:54So it's quite bittersweet.
41:55Every milestone for me is something that she should be doing, too, and she's not.
42:01This is ten years on, and they are turning into adults now, you know?
42:06And this is something that will never leave them.
42:10It's part of their life forever, as it is part of my life.
42:15Every time I look back at secondary school, I always think of Becky there and Courtney there.
42:28I just think about how she was as a person and all the good times that we had together.
42:36She was an amazing person.
42:40Anyone would have been lucky to have Becky as a friend.
42:44I fez a friend.
