00:00Some sad news from the country music world this morning.
00:03Tammy Wynette, who sang powerful songs of pain, sorrow, and occasionally triumph, has died.
00:10Miss Tammy Wynette!
00:11Tammy Wynette was known as the first lady of country music.
00:15She was the best country singer that ever came down the pipe.
00:19It's Tammy Wynette!
00:20The first female country star to sell a million records.
00:24She was a pioneer, and she made and paved a way for a lot of other women in country music.
00:29Tammy Wynette!
00:30Her stellar career spanned four decades, including 35 U.S. No. 1s, 30 million records sold, and two Grammy Awards.
00:40You've been wonderful. We love you.
00:43Throughout, she stayed faithful to her humble origins.
00:46She was so down-to-earth and such a sweet, pretty, funny, spontaneous person that you just loved her.
00:55But privately, her life was blighted by illness.
00:58And a long-running battle with addiction.
01:02Betty Ford Clinic was a very horrible time.
01:05She had to have emergency surgery, and then after that, it was just downhill from there.
01:11At 7 p.m. on April 6, 1998, she was found dead in her Nashville home.
01:18She was just 55 years old.
01:20I was angry. I was just angry because she's too young. Why is this happening?
01:25And that's our question. How did she die?
01:28Tammy's death certificate gives the cause as heartfelt.
01:32And a police report states it appears the victim's death was not unexpected.
01:37But I can see what follows is a storm of controversy.
01:41And a year after she died, her body was exhumed and an autopsy performed.
01:45The manner of her death, quote, could not be determined.
01:51My aim is to shed fresh light on the tragic demise of this true country legend.
