00:20And not a day went by that I missed American bandstand.

00:25His relaxed, honest style won him the hearts of a nation.

00:32Dick was one of the funniest, most interesting, and one of the most intelligent human beings I've ever known.

00:39He built a TV empire that's valued today at over a billion dollars.

00:44Virtually everything that he touched turned to gold.

00:47He was very, very successful.

00:49But behind the scenes, he was battling to recover from a devastating condition.

00:54He fought very, very hard to regain what he'd lost.

01:01On April 18, 2012, after 50 years on network television,

01:08Dick Clark died suddenly after a routine operation.

01:12Dick Clark's death certificate states he died from an acute myocardial infarction, or heart attack, following an operation.
