After her father, a police commissioner, passed away, Uma Devi’s family scattered, and she was left to face neglect and loneliness. Her life took a turn when The Banyan found her, providing care, dignity, and purpose.

Starting as a patient, “I don’t want to sit idle like this, ma’am, please give me some job,” she had said — a request that marked the beginning of her journey towards self-reliance. She slowly found her footing, working in the physiotherapy room, making paper bags and medicine covers, then managing a juice shop, and later spending nine fulfilling years with the Home Again programme.

Now, Uma works at The Banyan Café, where her chapatis are a favourite among residents. From once saying, “I don’t know what to do with salary,” she now saves her earnings and wears her independence with pride. Uma dreams of pursuing her master’s degree in economics, a wish she’s carried since her father’s time.
