00:00Well, 60-year-old Artemios Menses, who police say was the alleged gunman, behind firing
00:07up to 50 shots at random members of Publix who happened to pass by his residence in Croydon
00:14Park in Sydney's inner west on Sunday night.
00:17He faced court for the first time today, where he did not apply for bail, so he will remain
00:22in custody and he will face court again in December, where he will be served a large
00:26brief of evidence by police, who are still investigating this manner as we speak.
00:32Now, we know on Sunday that there was a lockdown issued around 7.30 after people heard loud
00:37bangs.
00:38Many people thought they were fireworks.
00:40Instead, we learnt it was gunshots.
00:42Up to 50 shots were fired from an apartment residence on George's River Road, a busy stretch
00:48of road.
00:49And then after that, police arrived at the scene and there was a standoff between police
00:54and the alleged gunman for up to two hours, where we know as well from police that shots
00:59were exchanged between this man and the tactical officers, who eventually broke in doors and
01:05arrested this man.
01:06Now, he was charged late yesterday with 25 offences in total.
01:11The most serious of those are 18 counts of shoot with intent to murder.
01:16So he faced Burwood Local Court today in a brief hearing.
01:20There was a dispute over who his legal representation was.
01:23But after he was able to be brought up from the cells and appeared in person in court with
01:28his hands sticking out of the little section of the dock where he's stationed, he was dressed
01:33in a blue jumpsuit.
01:35He confirmed who his legal representation was and apologised for the confusion there.
01:40Now, he will be remanded in custody.
01:44And like I said, that brief of evidence is now due to be served in December.
01:47So that's the next time that this matter will appear in court.
01:51In the meantime, police are continuing their investigations.
01:53We saw forensics there for several hours yesterday.
01:57Still trying to figure out exactly how many shots they believe were fired.
02:00The latest estimate was up to 50.
02:02One man was seriously injured in that attack.
02:05We understand he was hit in the neck and chest.
02:07He was taken to hospital, underwent emergency surgery, and he is now in a serious but stable
02:12condition.
02:13But he remains in hospital.
02:14Several others were also taken to hospital, but they have all since been discharged.
