03:31Right now, something never before attempted on television.
03:34An amazing test of automatic washers right here in our studio.
03:38Here's Betty Furness with the trial of the washers.
03:41Yes, tonight you're going to see a trial of four of America's leading automatic washers,
03:47including the Westinghouse Laundromat,
03:49to see just how well they wash and rinse your clothes.
03:54These four ladies are four leading club women
03:57from the New York State and New York City Federation of Women's Clubs,
04:01and they're here to represent you,
04:03to make sure that each machine gets an absolutely fair trial.
04:07They are in no way connected with Westinghouse,
04:10its dealers, or its advertising agency.
04:13They are Mrs. Olin Grantham,
04:16Mrs. Kenneth Strayer,
04:19Mrs. Donald Nags,
04:22and Mrs. Arthur Kramer.
04:25Now, ladies, would you each check the inside of your washer
04:28to make sure it's completely clean.
04:31And then, next, you'll find beside you six white bath towels,
04:36two cups of dirty sand, and some detergent.
04:39Now, if you would load those towels into the machine,
04:41and as you do, shake each one out to make sure that it's clean.
04:45Of course, the ladies can see, and you can't,
04:48that three of these machines are the automatic center post agitator type of washers.
04:54Now, they're all brand new models,
04:56and they're all so well known that, in all fairness, we've masked them off.
05:01Of course, the fourth is the new Westinghouse laundromat
05:05with the revolving agitator.
05:07Towels all in, ladies?
05:09All in. Good.
05:10Now, would you toss in those two cups of dirty sand,
05:13and that will represent the heavy dirt that you find in so many of your clothes,
05:18and then toss in the detergent after that.
05:21And then, if you'll be good enough to close the washers.
05:30And when they're all closed, if you'll start them.
05:36All going? All going. Fine.
05:37Now, would you please all stand right by your washer until the full cycle is completed.
05:43And that way you, and you too, will be able to see exactly how well each washer
05:49gets that dirty sand out of the towel.
05:52Watch for the outcome at the end of the next act.
05:56And now, back to our dramatic test of the washers in our live television studio,
06:05and the verdict.
06:07Earlier in the show, you saw the beginning of a trial
06:10of free center post agitator automatic washers
06:14and the new Westinghouse revolving agitator washer.
06:18Well, now, each of these machines has finished its wash and rinse cycle,
06:22and our four club women from the New York State
06:26and New York City Federation of Women's Clubs
06:28are ready to unload them.
06:30So, why don't we go see?
06:32Let's start with Mrs. Strayer.
06:34Mrs. Strayer, would you open your machine
06:36and take out some of the towels and open them up
06:38so we can have a good look at them?
06:40Right there. Ooh.
06:43Now, as you all saw, each of these machines
06:46was loaded with six towels, two cups of dirty sand,
06:49and some detergent.
06:51Kind of a mess, wouldn't you say, Mrs. Strayer?
06:54Why, you're sweaty.
06:55These towels are just covered with sand.
06:57They really are.
06:58And the bottom of the tub is full of sand.
07:00Oh, my.
07:01Look at that.
07:02I don't think you'd like your wash to come out like that, would you, Mrs. Strayer?
07:04I should say not.
07:05I wouldn't either.
07:06Now, let's check our second agitator washer.
07:09Mrs. Nags, would you do the same thing?
07:11Would you take your towels out and open them up
07:14so we can have a look at them?
07:16They're dirtier than Mrs. Strayer's.
07:18They are not a bit clean, are they?
07:20They just look terrible.
07:22I don't think we need to check the bottom of your machine for sand
07:25because I think it's all safely lodged in the towels, don't you?
07:28It is.
07:29All over everything.
07:30Now, why don't we have a look at our third center post agitator machine.
07:33Mrs. Kramer, let's see if you did any better.
07:35Would you take your towels out, please, one at a time?
07:38And let's see how they look.
07:43Oh.
07:44Oh, look at all that sand in that towel.
07:47That is not attractive, is it?
07:49I should say not.
07:50And there's still sand in that, too.
07:52And how about the...
07:53Oh, look at that.
07:54Yes, that seems even worse.
07:55How about the bottom of your machine?
07:57Is there any loops down there?
08:00I think...oh, definitely.
08:02Yes, there certainly is.
08:03Well, now, I have a suggestion.
08:05Why don't we all go and take a look at the towels
08:07that are coming out of the Westinghouse Laundromat.
08:10Now, you ladies have all seen with your very own eyes
08:13just how much sand each of these center post agitator machines
08:18left in the towels.
08:20Mrs. Grantham, let's have a look at your towels, may we?
08:24Oh, look at that.
08:26Oh, look at how lovely and white that is.
08:28Isn't that beautiful and clean?
08:30Isn't that beautiful?
08:31Oh.
08:32And another one just as clean.
08:33Isn't that wonderful?
08:34Isn't that wonderful?
08:35Each one, there's not a grain of sand.
08:37Isn't that wonderful?
08:38Look at that.
08:39I must say, I'm very impressed myself.
08:41They all look simply wonderful.
08:45Well, now, Mrs. Grantham, I have a clean cloth here.
08:48I wonder if you would just wipe out the inside of the laundromat.
08:52Oh, one more.
08:57Look at that.
08:58Not a trace of sand.
08:59Not a trace.
09:00Well, now, ladies, you've all watched this test.
09:03We've all seen it right from beginning to end together.
09:05And you know it was completely fair and impartial.
09:07Absolutely.
09:08And I think I can see that you're pretty impressed with our laundromat.
09:11Thank you so much.
09:12I want to thank each of you so much for coming with us tonight.
09:17Good night.
09:18And as for you ladies of home, if you're in the market for an automatic washer, I'd like to suggest that you go to your Westinghouse dealer and ask him to let you see this dramatic sand test yourself.
09:29I'm sure you'll agree that the new Westinghouse laundromat with the revolving agitator will wash and rinse your clothes much better than old fashioned center post agitator washers.
09:41And for the best in laundry equipment or any appliance, remember, you can be sure if it's Westinghouse.
09:48If it's Westinghouse.
