00:00DAP's Lim Lip-ing has defended Tourism Minister Tiong King Singh amid calls for his resignation
00:06after alcohol was served at a dinner during Tourism Malaysia's global travel meet.
00:11Lim said the facts were simple, that industry players had voluntarily taken over the event
00:16to help secure new business opportunities and that Tiong approved the initiative to reduce
00:21government spending.
00:23He called it a practical, transparent and cost-saving decision, accusing critics of
00:28ignoring the real challenges of managing a global tourism industry.
00:32The Kepung MP accused Tiong's critics of political opportunism and warned that such narrow-minded
00:38mindsets would stun the growth of the tourism sector.
00:41However, Penang Amanah Youth Chief Kairul Ali demanded an apology from the ministry, saying
00:47it was still an official government event and alcohol should not have been served.
00:52Tiong had earlier distanced the ministry from the controversy, saying private sector players
00:56organized the dinner while Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said UMNO's objection would
01:01be raised at the next Cabinet meeting.
