00:00DAP's Lim Lip Eng today hit out at a claim by past Deputy President Tuan Ibrahim Tuan
00:07Man that the proposed Urban Renewal Act is aimed at pushing poor Malays and Indians out
00:12of urban areas.
00:15In a statement, Lim said such allegations did not make sense, adding that the URA was
00:19intended to restore residential homes that were old and unsafe to live in.
00:25He said many buildings in urban areas were experiencing structural problems and electrical
00:29supply issues and lacked modern facilities.
00:33More importantly, he said, the original homeowners would be given new homes for free or at a
00:38discounted rate, regardless of their race.
00:41Lim also asked whether the claim that the URA was a way to remove the Malays and Indians
00:45from urban areas had originated, adding that PAS is forced to peddle racially charged myths
00:51to frighten the people.
00:53Yesterday, Malaysia Kini reported Tuan Ibrahim as saying that the URA, which has yet to be
00:58tabled, was a subtle method to push out those who cannot afford it, particularly the Malays
01:03and Indians.
01:04Tuan Ibrahim also said that MPs from Perikatan Nasional would oppose the bill as it could
01:08disrupt harmony.
