Britain's Most Evil Killers S09E02 (Oct 15 2024)
Transcript
00:00The following program contains descriptions of sexual violence.
00:12On the 17th of December 1995, police made a chilling discovery in the Ayrshire town of Kilmarnock.
00:21The body of missing schoolgirl, Marie Julian.
00:25It's the stuff that nightmares are made of.
00:28It's what every parent worries about when their child goes out.
00:3416-year-old Marie had been sexually assaulted and strangled to death.
00:39This was a very, very torturous death.
00:44It wasn't quick and it wasn't easy.
00:47It was very agonizing.
00:50Marie's twisted killer was 36-year-old Gavin Maguire,
00:54a man who had already spent years behind bars for a series of brutal attacks on young women.
01:02I've never met anything like it.
01:04It's one of the most dangerous men on the planet.
01:08After a reign of terror that lasted for decades,
01:12Gavin Maguire would eventually be unmasked as one of Britain's most evil killers.
01:18In the run-up to Christmas 1995,
01:46the brutal murder of 16-year-old Marie Julian shattered the peace of a small Scottish community.
01:54She'd been dragged by her hands and there were marks on her back.
01:59She'd been obliterated.
02:01I don't think there's any other word for it.
02:03The perpetrator used her own blouse to strangulate her
02:11and to keep her quiet and to probably facilitate a quick death,
02:17shoved her own bra in her mouth, making her gasp for air.
02:22In the hunt for her killer, police launched a huge-scale DNA testing operation of local men,
02:32including convicted rapist Gavin Maguire.
02:36Maguire was a serial, predatory sex offender
02:41who enjoyed the suffering of his victims.
02:45He should have been stopped a long time ago.
02:47If ever there was a man who you genuinely thought was a danger to society,
02:54it was Gavin Maguire.
02:58This killer story begins on the 18th of December, 1958.
03:03Gavin Maguire was born in Stephenston, in North Ayrshire, on Scotland's west coast.
03:09His parents were called Jimmy and Nettie.
03:15He was the oldest of three boys.
03:18His dad was a labourer in the steel industry.
03:22They were a typically working-class Scottish family.
03:26His dad was then made redundant when Maguire was quite young
03:31and that was the source of a lot of financial conflict.
03:35It wasn't a happy family.
03:37Jim eventually left the family, leaving Nettie with the three boys.
03:41Gavin was difficult as a child.
03:45At the age of eight, Maguire entered the care system.
03:49He did not thrive there.
03:51From that point on, we certainly see Maguire breaking the law routinely and regularly
03:58and moving from a simple care system into the justice system.
04:05His early years were a mixture of assessment centres,
04:10boar stalls, young offenders institutions,
04:13a list D school, which is typically where troubled children will attend.
04:19By the early 70s, Maguire was regularly truanting
04:22and his already troubling behaviour had grown even more disturbing.
04:27He was starting to break into houses, stealing cars.
04:31He had some pets, pigeons, in a loft.
04:35He set fire to that loft, killed all the pigeons and reportedly stood there
04:41and laughed as these birds died in the most horrific circumstances.
04:46And then he went on and did the same thing to some rabbits.
04:53Fire setting and cruelty to animals, that's two big ticks.
04:59So I would say at around 14, we get a very good idea of who Maguire is
05:04and what he's going to be doing in his future.
05:09He was a loner, didn't mix well, wasn't comfortable in the company of his peers.
05:16He wasn't a sociable animal.
05:19Maguire was described as maybe shy, nervous.
05:23He has no social skills, that he doesn't really know how to communicate
05:30and interact with people.
05:34So that is suggestive, that if he is a serial offender and predator,
05:41that women are going to become targets.
05:43In 1976, a few months after leaving school,
05:48Maguire's malevolent urges towards women became apparent
05:51when he embarked on a terrifying spree of sexual violence
05:55in Stevenston and nearby coastal towns.
06:00Maguire attacked his first victim at the age of 17
06:03when he assaulted a 15-year-old girl.
06:07He then attacked another 15-year-old girl and sexually assaulted her.
06:12Two days later, he carried out an attack on an 18-year-old girl,
06:17but she was able to escape before he could sexually assault her.
06:21There was something in him that wanted to express itself
06:28in this particularly brutal and unpleasant way to young women.
06:33And it's that that is the thread that goes through Maguire's story.
06:39It's something that he feels compelled to do.
06:43What's driving him is that he doesn't have the normal human emotions.
06:50He has no barriers, no filters that's going to stop him.
06:54Maguire was arrested and charged with the attacks on the girls,
06:58but released on bail for the sum of £10.
07:02It offered little deterrent.
07:05Within weeks, the 18-year-old had resumed his pattern of offending.
07:09While he was on bail for these attacks,
07:13he then attacked an 18-year-old pregnant woman
07:16and beat her up quite severely.
07:19And he kicked to the ground and robbed the garage thereafter.
07:24And he carried out a similar theft in a garage nearby as well.
07:27This is all in a period of days,
07:30and it does feel like this is compulsive.
07:33Maguire's shocking spree continued,
07:36and another innocent young woman fell victim to his deviant urges.
07:41The latter attack against a young lady who he'd approached,
07:46he threatened her with glass
07:47and unfortunately achieved his objective of raping that young lady.
07:50He's reckless.
07:54He's been caught mid-offence sometimes.
07:58He's been chased.
07:59He just continues.
08:01It seems to me like he has no care for what happens to his victims.
08:05He doesn't seem to have a huge amount of care for what happens to him either.
08:10Maguire was quickly identified and apprehended.
08:13Back in court, he admitted eight new offences to the judge.
08:17Rape, sexual assault, assault with sexual intent, theft, car theft,
08:22a multitude of bad behaviour.
08:25In February 1977, less than a year after leaving Borstal,
08:3018-year-old Gavin Maguire was back inside,
08:34sentenced to 10 years in a young offender's institution.
08:37The judge told Maguire the tariff was necessary
08:40to protect the girls and women of Stevenson from the serial offender.
08:45This is a man who's out of control.
08:47There can be no question about that.
08:55By December 1995, 36-year-old Gavin Maguire
09:00was living with his mother in Stevenson.
09:0320 minutes away in the town of Kilmarnock,
09:06schoolgirl Marie Julian was enjoying the lead-up to Christmas.
09:09Mary Julian was the youngest of two girls
09:13to a family that have been described as honest, hard-working
09:18and well-liked within their local community.
09:22Mary herself was described as a shy, conscientious girl.
09:26On the evening of December the 16th,
09:30Marie went to a pantomime at the town's Palace Theatre.
09:34She's gone with her best friend Julianne
09:36to see the Sleeping Beauty.
09:39It's not very far from where she lives.
09:41The last anybody's seen her was when Julianne waved to Mary
09:46as they drove away in their car.
09:48The plan was Mary's dad would come and pick her up
09:52after the performance.
09:54However, the play finished early
09:56and Mary had let her dad know
09:59that she was just going to make the half-mile journey home by foot.
10:06Marie Julianne's parents were expecting her home by around 10pm,
10:11but by 10.30, there was no sign of her.
10:15It was extremely unusual for the 16-year-old
10:19not to be home as expected.
10:21In the darkness, her mother walked the route
10:23Marie should have taken.
10:26Marie's family were frightened
10:28when she didn't arrive as expected at home
10:31and they very quickly called the police to report her missing.
10:35And this is where the officers come across
10:38a horrific human crime scene.
10:42It was every parent's worst nightmare.
10:4516-year-old Marie Julianne had been murdered while walking home.
10:50The shy schoolgirl had been attacked and brutalized
10:53in a way that would terrify the local community
10:56and shock even seasoned detectives.
11:08Less than 24 hours since her disappearance,
11:14Marie Julianne's family learned of the horrific nature
11:18of their daughter's brutal murder.
11:29A police officer found Marie
11:31in a stagecoach bus depot in McKinley Crescent.
11:35She's naked, but for her boots and socks.
11:41Her blouse is tied round her neck
11:42and her bra is shoved in her mouth as a gag.
11:46It was a devastating discovery for Marie's family,
11:50who learned that the teenager had been killed
11:53just two minutes away from the safety of her home,
11:56for the community utter shock.
11:59Just a young girl coming home from a pantomime,
12:05it's the stuff that nightmares are made of.
12:08It's what every parent worries about
12:11when their child goes out.
12:14And to have it actually play out
12:17in the middle of this tight-knit community
12:19would have sent shockwaves and fear
12:22through absolutely everybody.
12:23In my 30-year police career,
12:28I could think of a few similar cases.
12:31It's a very friendly place.
12:33I grew up in the local area.
12:36I know the area well.
12:38This case would have been shocking to the community.
12:41A post-mortem examination the following day
12:44revealed that Marie had been the victim
12:46of a vicious and prolonged attack.
12:49There were a lot of injuries on Marie's body,
12:5247 injuries.
12:54A lot of them were to her face and head.
12:59There were defensive wounds
13:01so that we can see that she fought him
13:04and she fought him.
13:07Marie was covered in dirt
13:09and she had cuts on her shoulders
13:10and it was suspected that she had been dragged
13:14along the ground with her hands.
13:15The cause of death at her post-mortem
13:18was marked as asphyxia due to strangulation.
13:23This was a very, very torturous death.
13:27It wasn't quick and it wasn't easy.
13:30It was very agonizing.
13:33The police told the press and the public
13:36they believed the violent attack
13:39had been sexually motivated.
13:41Stratkai police launched
13:43an immediate murder investigation.
13:44and they conducted dozens of interviews.
13:49The London Road, which she walked along,
13:51is a busy road.
13:53So there would have been a number of cars,
13:54a number of drivers,
13:56driving along that road to go
13:57to certain places in the Comana Carey
13:59and outskirts.
14:01A lot of energy is expended
14:03by the local police
14:04to track down somebody
14:06who can treat an innocent young woman
14:08in such a dreadful manner.
14:10Everybody who has a teenage daughter
14:14would have been fearful
14:14of letting them out in the streets.
14:17The community would be scared
14:19until individuals arrested for this,
14:21absolutely no doubt.
14:22And there'd be a lot of reassurance,
14:24a big reassurance job by the police.
14:28Police quickly ruled out those close to Murray
14:31as suspects
14:32and widened their search,
14:33harnessing local and national media.
14:36Mary's father, Philip,
14:39moved an appeal to the public
14:40for any information
14:41about his daughter's final movements
14:44on the night she disappeared.
14:45The Daily Record also offered
15:02a £10,000 reward
15:04for any information
15:05leading to her killer's conviction.
15:08Someone in the area
15:10had clearly been watching the news.
15:13A few days into the new year,
15:15just under three weeks
15:16after Murray's murder,
15:18her parents received
15:19an anonymous letter in the post.
15:22It's 14 lines long
15:24and it includes
15:25several fascinating facts.
15:28It says,
15:28I think my son
15:30may have killed your daughter.
15:32It goes on to say
15:33that on the night
15:34of the 16th of December,
15:36the night of the killing,
15:37her son had come home
15:39and said,
15:40I've done something bad.
15:41It goes on to say,
15:43sorry, I can't give him up.
15:45I love him.
15:49It was an intriguing lead.
15:52The police appealed
15:53for the letter writer
15:54to come forward.
15:56It's important
15:56that if she's genuine in her belief,
15:59then she should have the confidence
16:01to come forward in sweetness.
16:03But the writer remained anonymous
16:05and three weeks
16:06after Murray's violent death,
16:09the police were still in the dark
16:10about her killer.
16:12Stranger murders
16:13are the most difficult to solve
16:15because there's no relationship
16:18between the killer
16:19and the victim.
16:21Most victims
16:22do know their killers.
16:23So how do we find
16:25who the suspects are?
16:27The early stages
16:28of a case like this,
16:30it's a whirlwind.
16:30You've got a number
16:31of competing elements.
16:32You have the media element.
16:33You sometimes get misinformation.
16:35You have the family side,
16:38which is extensive.
16:40Trying to get experts in
16:41to speak to the family.
16:43There's pressure
16:43from a whole lot
16:44of different areas.
16:45But ultimately,
16:46your goal is to succeed
16:47in bringing somebody
16:49to justice
16:49and hopefully bring closure
16:51to the family
16:52in the worst of circumstances.
16:55The police have to be lucky.
16:57They have to hope
16:58that they leave something
17:00at the crime scene
17:01that identifies them
17:03or they have to hope
17:05that their movements
17:07can be tracked.
17:09Scene of crime officers
17:11attending the bus depot
17:13had meticulously examined
17:14the area for anything
17:16that could help
17:17identify the killer.
17:19They find a shoelace
17:21that has been torn apart
17:23and they find
17:24blood-soaked clothing.
17:27Now, this is very important
17:30because it could be
17:31the blood of the assailant
17:32with all of their
17:33genetic profile present,
17:35but it could also be
17:36the blood of the victim,
17:37putting them together.
17:38On the left sleeve
17:40of Mari's jacket,
17:41tests revealed blood.
17:43The laboratory
17:44processing the clothing
17:45discovered two different
17:47sources of blood,
17:48one belonging to Mari,
17:50the other from her killer.
17:53They were not smart enough
17:55or thorough enough
17:57to clean up.
17:58They actually left
18:00a lot of evidence
18:01that in the hands
18:03of the right forensic scientists
18:05could produce
18:07the evidence needed
18:09to identify this person
18:10and bring them to justice.
18:13The killer left
18:15their DNA
18:17at the crime scene.
18:18The DNA was quite new
18:20in those days
18:22and the DNA database
18:24was incredibly new.
18:26But at least the police
18:27knew they had this tool
18:29that if they could get
18:31a match,
18:31that would definitively
18:33identify who was
18:36at the scene
18:37when Mari died.
18:39Today, we have
18:40DNA databases
18:42where people
18:42who have been involved
18:43in the criminal justice system
18:45have their DNA stored.
18:47That was not available
18:49back then.
18:50Now, we had to find
18:52that perpetrator.
18:53So the police
18:54goes on a mission
18:55to find the donor
18:56of this piece of DNA.
18:59And they start
19:01a systematic search
19:02of men
19:03between about 20 and 40
19:05in the area.
19:07Carry out this exercise
19:08would have been
19:09extremely unusual
19:10and groundbreaking,
19:11but it was perceived
19:12as a line of inquiry
19:13the best way
19:14to get about it.
19:15They start by
19:17testing everybody
19:18who works
19:19at the location
19:20of the crime,
19:20the bus depot.
19:23When that search
19:24proves fruitless,
19:26they actually expand
19:27the search
19:29and they eventually
19:30test over 20,000
19:33male donors
19:35trying to find a match.
19:37It was a mammoth task,
19:39but Strathclyde police
19:40were drawing on
19:41all the resources
19:42available to them,
19:44including painstakingly
19:46trawling through
19:46hours of tapes
19:47from the town's
19:48surveillance cameras
19:49from the night
19:50Mari was abducted.
19:52Their dedication
19:53paid off.
19:55The police identify
19:56some CCTV
19:57at 9.20
19:59that same evening
20:01in a shopping mall.
20:02A sharp-eyed officer
20:04homed in
20:05on a familiar figure.
20:11The CCTV
20:12clearly showed them
20:13in person
20:14in the area
20:15a few hundred yards
20:16away from the crime scene
20:17on the night in question,
20:18just before the crime
20:19would have been committed.
20:20It was a man
20:22local police
20:23knew well,
20:25a man who'd spent
20:26most of his adult life
20:27in prison
20:28for attacks
20:29on young women.
20:31Detectives were confident
20:32they had Mari's killer
20:34on camera.
20:35eight years before
20:49Mari Julian's murder
20:50in the summer of 1986,
20:5233-year-old Doris Thompson
20:55booked a family holiday
20:56in saltcoats
20:58on the North Ayrshire coast.
21:00I had a baby
21:02in 1985
21:03and
21:04I wasn't working then.
21:08And I just
21:09had plenty to do
21:11with the children.
21:13Still had my mum
21:14and my dad,
21:17my sister
21:18and her boyfriend
21:19and my youngest son.
21:21We all went.
21:23I had a week
21:23booked
21:24at Saltcoats
21:26Caravan Park.
21:27Saltcoats was a very,
21:30very busy holiday
21:30destination
21:31for most people
21:32in Scotland.
21:34At that time
21:34it would be busy
21:35certainly in the summer months.
21:38It was nice that week.
21:39It was very good.
21:42Good to get out and about.
21:43We were enjoying it.
21:45The first two or three days
21:47before anything
21:49took place
21:50we were having fun.
21:51The holiday
21:53was filled with trips
21:55to the beach
21:56and fun fair
21:56but within days
21:58events took
21:59a horrific turn.
22:01Doris and her husband
22:02went out for drinks
22:04in the pretty harbour town
22:05with her sister
22:06and partner.
22:08I think we went
22:09into one pub
22:09and then we just
22:11had one drink
22:12and that's where
22:12we all sat
22:13laughing
22:15and having a good time.
22:18Must have been
22:19just after 11
22:20and my sister
22:22she had a splitting headache.
22:24She wanted to go back
22:25to the caravan.
22:26My husband
22:26had went to the caravan
22:28to make sure
22:28she was all right.
22:30My brother-in-law
22:30went for a taxi.
22:31It was just a mix-up
22:32that night.
22:35Doris found herself
22:37in the dark
22:37deserted streets
22:39alone.
22:41As she tried
22:41to make her way back
22:43a man appeared
22:44from a side street
22:45grabbing her
22:46around the neck.
22:51First thing
22:52he demanded
22:53was
22:53take your tights off.
22:55Take your tights off.
22:56Just put the tights
22:57right round my throat.
23:00I was pulling
23:00as tight as I could pull
23:01so I could start
23:02and feel myself
23:03fain
23:04at that point.
23:06As Doris
23:07struggled
23:08for a means
23:08of escape
23:09or to attract
23:10the attention
23:11of people
23:11in the nearby flats
23:13her attacker
23:14dragged her
23:14to a gap
23:15in the stone
23:16harbour wall.
23:19So he dragged me
23:20in there
23:20and told me
23:21to strip naked.
23:23All this time
23:24his hands
23:25was on my throat
23:26so after I'd stripped
23:28he pushed me down
23:30and it went
23:31through there.
23:32The man began
23:34to sexually assault
23:35Doris
23:35all the while
23:36beating her.
23:40He just went
23:41into an utter
23:42frenzy
23:43punching.
23:44kicking
23:45I didn't know
23:46where the
23:46blood was coming
23:48from
23:48that I thought
23:49what am I going
23:50to do?
23:52So I thought
23:52back
23:53and it was punch
23:54for punch
23:54and then
23:55that was when
23:56the strangling
23:57started really bad
23:58so I decided
23:59I would go the other
24:00way and I would
24:01stay calm.
24:02That's not what
24:02he wanted.
24:03He wanted a fight.
24:05Desperate
24:06Doris told the attacker
24:07she had five young
24:08children
24:09one just a baby.
24:11His response
24:12was to laugh.
24:15How can you
24:16laugh like this?
24:18This went on
24:19for ages
24:19and then the next
24:21thing
24:21he leans back
24:22and picks up
24:22my dress
24:23and he says
24:24put that back on
24:25and I thought
24:26oh good
24:27I says he's like
24:28put on my dress
24:29and he's going to
24:30vanish.
24:31Having emptied
24:32the change
24:32from Doris's purse
24:33the attacker
24:34dragged her
24:35by the throat
24:36to the sea wall
24:37where he throttled her.
24:39Doris played dead
24:40sinking onto the ground
24:41but her attacker
24:43was not finished
24:44with her yet.
24:45And he just
24:46lifted me
24:46and he threw me
24:48straight off the harbour
24:49and to the sea.
24:52Doris struggled
24:54in the cold
24:54dark water
24:55knowing she was
24:57still not safe.
24:58I lay floating
25:01just from my head
25:02to the side
25:03and knocked
25:04the slitting air in
25:05and I could keep
25:06an eye on the harbour
25:07wall.
25:08It was quite a bright
25:09night that night
25:09the moon was bright
25:10I could see him
25:12running about
25:12the harbour wall
25:13up and down
25:14and I thought
25:15God is looking
25:16for me.
25:17He watched her
25:18struggling
25:19there was that
25:19enjoyment of
25:21somebody else's
25:22suffering
25:22so this guy
25:23is a sadist.
25:26Coming out
25:27the water
25:27it was terrifying
25:29but I knew
25:30it was getting daylight
25:31it was starting
25:31to break
25:32and I thought
25:32it's going to seem
25:33sooner or later
25:34I've got to get out.
25:36It's an extraordinary
25:38escape
25:38and a great tribute
25:40to her will to live.
25:42I was shaking
25:42and I was in shock
25:43I just looked
25:45everywhere
25:45to make sure
25:46he wasn't there
25:47ran across
25:48knocked all the doors.
25:51It was the early
25:53hours of the morning
25:54but one resident
25:55opened their door
25:56to Doris
25:57whose clothes
25:58were drenched
25:58in seawater
25:59and blood.
26:01The first thing
26:02I made them do
26:02was bolt the door
26:03I was terrified
26:04in case he was still there
26:06so that's where I was
26:07until I was taken
26:08to the hospital.
26:11Doris's jaw
26:12was fractured
26:13and her front teeth
26:14had been knocked out
26:16but she was determined
26:18to identify the man
26:20who tried to kill her.
26:23Oh I was angry
26:24the anger was in me
26:26and every time I prayed
26:28I would say
26:29please let me get him
26:30please let me catch this man.
26:37For the next two days
26:38in the hope of spotting
26:40her attacker
26:41Doris accompanied
26:42two female
26:43plainclothes detectives
26:45around the pubs
26:46and clubs
26:47of Saltcoats.
26:52I went up and down
26:53the day after
26:54when I got out
26:55of the hospital
26:56I was determined
26:56he wasn't getting away with it
26:59and it was two days after
27:00we went for a tea
27:01into the cafe
27:04and the two girls
27:05went off on their own way
27:06and left me by my husband
27:07and I was sitting
27:09and he went by the door
27:12and I thought
27:13there he goes.
27:15With the plainclothes detectives
27:17at the other end
27:18of the town
27:19Doris and her husband
27:20followed the man
27:21to a nearby bar
27:22as he took the first
27:24sips of his pint
27:25she confronted
27:26her attacker.
27:27I said that's me
27:28it's me
27:29I was the woman
27:32that you tried to kill
27:33down the shore
27:33get the wrong man
27:37get the wrong man
27:38Doris' husband
27:41and locals
27:42held the man
27:43whilst they waited
27:44for the police
27:45to return.
27:48They arrested him
27:49and identified him
27:50as 28-year-old
27:52Gavin Maguire
27:53a man with a long
27:55rap sheet
27:55for sex crimes
27:56a man who thought
27:58nothing of inflicting
27:59pain and suffering
28:00on the women
28:01he came into contact with.
28:03Her life was
28:05not only threatened
28:07he thought
28:08it was over.
28:09That kind of experience
28:11is going to have
28:13a lifelong effect.
28:16Charged at first
28:18with the rape
28:18and attempted murder
28:20of Doris Thompson
28:21Maguire's defense team
28:23offered a guilty plea
28:24to the lesser charge
28:25to the lesser charge
28:26of assault
28:26and rape.
28:29In August 1986
28:31he was convicted
28:32and sentenced
28:33to 10 years
28:34in prison.
28:37I was happy
28:38that they convicted him
28:40but I was deeply unhappy
28:41that they had dropped
28:42the attempted murder
28:43charge.
28:45The judge calls him
28:46a menace to society
28:47and particularly
28:48to women
28:49and that's not
28:50an understatement.
28:59In 1993
29:00having served
29:02just part
29:02of his 10 year sentence
29:04Gavin Maguire
29:05was released.
29:06The 34 year old
29:08serial sex offender
29:09was deemed
29:10to be safe
29:11and returned
29:12to his mother's house
29:13in Stevenson.
29:14This is somebody
29:17with a personality disorder.
29:19This is somebody
29:20who enjoys
29:20watching women suffer.
29:22Of course he was
29:23going to start
29:23offending again.
29:27On the evening
29:28of August the 12th
29:301995
29:31in the Ayrshire town
29:33of Kilburnie
29:34nine miles
29:35from Gavin Maguire's
29:36home
29:36a 21 year old woman
29:38was subjected
29:39to a terrifying
29:40attack in a park
29:42held by a man
29:43in a stranglehold
29:44she fought
29:46for her life.
29:48She's obviously
29:48horrified
29:50frightened
29:50but she attacks
29:51the only way
29:52she can
29:52she bites his finger.
29:55He lets her go.
29:57A few days later
29:58she sees him
30:00in the town.
30:01I mean
30:01he's not hiding anywhere
30:02he's not
30:03gone on the run.
30:05The man she identified
30:06as her attacker
30:08was Gavin Maguire.
30:11The police are alerted
30:13and is arrested
30:13it's as good
30:15and I want
30:15as evidence
30:16as he could
30:16possibly get.
30:18Maguire denied
30:19the allegation.
30:20It was the young
30:21woman's word
30:22against his.
30:26There's a debate
30:27about when
30:28that bite
30:29actually took place.
30:31The physician
30:32who examined
30:33who was actually
30:34not a dermatologist
30:35determined
30:36that this injury
30:38could have only
30:39happened
30:40in the last
30:4072 hours
30:41which was
30:42which was
30:42unfortunately
30:43inconsistent
30:43with what
30:44the victim
30:45alleged.
30:47The case
30:48was dropped
30:49due to
30:49lack of
30:50corroboration
30:51in Scotland
30:51which requires
30:52at least
30:53two witnesses
30:54to claim.
30:57Without concrete
30:58evidence linking
30:59Gavin Maguire
31:00to the attack
31:01police could
31:02no longer
31:03detain him.
31:05At the end
31:06of November
31:071995
31:08Maguire is
31:09released.
31:11It's like
31:11letting a
31:12panther out
31:13of a cage.
31:1619 days later
31:1715 miles away
31:19in Kilmarnock
31:20the brutal
31:20murder
31:21of
31:21Marie
31:21Julian
31:22sparked
31:22a high
31:23profile
31:23hunt
31:24for
31:24her
31:24killer.
31:25In
31:26early
31:26January
31:271996
31:28detectives
31:29had a
31:29breakthrough.
31:31CCTV
31:31from the
31:32night
31:32of her
31:32disappearance
31:33showed
31:34a man
31:34following
31:35another
31:35young
31:35woman
31:36a man
31:37they
31:37recognised
31:38immediately.
31:39It was
31:40Gavin Maguire.
31:41There's no
31:41doubt in
31:42anybody's
31:42mind
31:43about that.
31:45That was
31:46an incredible
31:46thing to
31:47pick that up
31:47whilst routinely
31:48looking through.
31:50CCTV footage.
31:52The officers
31:52knew of
31:52Maguire
31:53from before
31:53from his
31:54activities in
31:55the Steering
31:56Scenere
31:56the local
31:57area.
31:58On the
31:588th of
31:59January
31:591996
32:00they interview
32:01him for
32:01the first
32:02time.
32:03He says
32:03no no
32:04I was
32:04nowhere
32:04near

32:06depot.
32:06I was

32:14Maguire's
32:15story did
32:16little to
32:16convince
32:17investigators
32:18and his
32:19carefully
32:19concocted
32:20alibi
32:20was revealed
32:21to be
32:22false.
32:23He did
32:24change his
32:24story when
32:26police showed
32:26him a video
32:27of himself
32:28in the
32:29shopping mall
32:30close to
32:31where
32:31Mary was
32:32attending

32:33In fact
32:34he was
32:35there
32:35Christmas
32:36shopping.
32:38It was
32:38enough to
32:39obtain a
